A dedicated video camera is out of question for Nikon. They don't make sensors. Sony has its own fab(s), Canon hss its own, Panasonic has its own (plus Towerjazz), so Nikon has to ask someone to make a video optimized sensor for them, and because its very low volume market, that will be hugely expensive. Df is niche, but its sensor is not. Besides, even if they find a reasonably priced sensor, the mount problem remains. Most serious video shooters are in PL camp, or using Canon lenses, or already adapting their old lenses to Sony's open mount. These people have no interest for F mount. No, it clearly makes no sense, businesswise.
The thing is they are letting their customers to experience and finally embrace other options. When a DSLR shooter realizes he needs a secondary camera for video jobs, which is probably a mirrorless, he slowly discovers that secondary camera can also take pretty high quality stills in situations he wouldn't expect it to perform well, so asks himself Why I should keep using my bulky DSLR in every shoot? Its not even dangerous for DSLR business, its disaster.

Just have one setting: "Unlock Pro Video Settings"

Default send it shipped out set to "Off", but then users can switch it to "On" which will enable several more pages and submenus worth of video settings to be viewable.
Well.... I reckon Nikon are ahead of Canon in the video DSLR game, but the gain is not really large enough for everyone (it is for some though) to make it worth switching, as if you're going to switch away from Canon.... why not just go to Sony or Panasonic instead? That is Nikon's problem in attracting video shooters away from Canon, they can't just moderately beat Canon by little bits (like they have with the D5200, D750, D500, etc).
They need to also bring out a higher end above that is focused on video to complement their video DSLRs (such as the C100/C300 and FS5/FS7 does).

In a world in which the market share for dedicated stills cameras is massively declining each and every year, Nikon can not survive by focusing on only one or two niches, they need a broader platform to support themselves. The video/film world is an obvious and natural next step for them.

If video AF only works in P mode, its not amazing, its unusable - or more to the point, its horseshit.
I'm skeptical on a number of features, need to wait for real testers to get past the Sony hype. There's a video of the 12fps burst that clogs after a couple seconds just shooting jpeg's, which means the buffer/write speed really sucks. I loved watching the guy squirm in the Cinema5d video, he clearly didn't want to talk about the shitty video AF. Live view AF is supposed to be an advantage of the SLT, after all these years I find it amazing that Sony and its vast engineering resources hasn't been able to figure out how to make it fully functional. Some say its the BionzX can't keep up, its been around for a few years too, if that's the bottleneck it needs to be replaced ASAP.
This camera feels just as half-assed as the original a99, just a bunch of pieces from other cameras cobbled together. UHS-II isn't anything new since its been spec'd on other cameras for a couple years now. If this camera is supposed to be the A-mount flagship for the next four years, it should have it. The d500's write speeds will completely crush this with some pretty amazing write speeds. You would think Sony would introduce faster hardware with the flagship, but that's just not the case. Its not even out yet and its already slow/outdated.
People love to bash Canon here, but dual pixel works really well, and it works all the time. Canon also understands the benefit of a touchscreen to pull focus, something else Sony can't seem to figure out.
Outside of A-mount users that want a new sensor, this camera is shaping up to be as much of a dud as the original a99.

I feel your pain @dvcrn! There really is no free lunch and it's very difficult to make informed decisions sometimes as there's so much noise you need to cancel out to get a clear picture.
Investing in glass is wise as lenses can basically last you a lifetime and resale is always easier with minimal loss, but it's still tough... Do you buy lenses that can move with you through each system if you need to change, or go native so you get the system benefits? I'm always chasing my tail on this one and have ended up with half my lenses being native m43 and half Nikon AI-S.
Clever move from Canon with DPAF, again strengthening investment in their glass. It's just a shame you have to spend at least £4k on a Canon camera to get solid and sharp 1080p in 2016!
    All good fun!

The Samsung NX1's menus are superb. Very feature packed camera yet I'm never lost on page 9 of 12
So underrated how ergonomic that camera turned out to be....
Canon and Fuji also understand menu design. Panasonic good logically, but a little too much scrolling, button pressing.

At least that's one thing that Canon did better in the 5DsR, 1DX2 and 5D4:  You can create your own menus and register anything you like to new own menu pages.
Oddly enough, in the Sonys you can nearly assign any function to any external button, while in the Canon they only allow a random selection of functions on a random number of buttons.
Let's hope that at least by the year 2020 we all laugh about these stupid middle age times when Toyko engineers still were trapped in their limited 20th century logic, and finally all manufactures do offer unlimited possibilities.

Sorry to disappoint you, but none of the Canons are good replacement for Micro Cinema Camera. All Canons in HD mode are disappointing crap vs your mentioned GH4 or Micro Cinema Camera. C-log does not fix the muddy pixels. Only 5DmarkIV and 1DX mark II and 1DC produce video quality which can replace the Micro Cinema Camera. If you want Canon HD-video, you can as well buy used 5DmarkII and you lose about nothing vs your list (except for more moire than 5DmarkIII), Canon HD video has not improved at all since 5D mark II came. Even 1DX mark II produces crappy HD-video and is only usable in 4K mode.

In fact you can buy used 5D2 for less than new Rebel and it is a good camera in still mode, much superior to Rebel in image quality. I had my 5D2 until 1DX2 came despite also owning BMCC and GH4. GH4 loses badly in still mode to the old 5D.I had Magic Lantern installed and the MLraw out of it was reasonable quality despite of the moire.

If you're going to buy a Canon DSLR and **not** use Magic Lantern then you're really throwing your money away.
One of the few rare good reasons to consider a Canon DSLR for filmmaking is because of Magic Lantern.

besides that guys, did you notice the release, first half of 2017- That probably means summer before widely available. And to know what it really can do, in the hands of users for at least a few weeks, probably longer. For starters will it take photos as well as the nx1, with that sensor, doubt it. So we might be looking at a Year. Not even thinking about selling. I'll need a really good reason.

    New NX1 user reporting in.
I just wanted to say hi as a new NX1 user (my camera arriving tomorrow to complete my stack of 3 lenses and flash).
I am reading this long thread and the more I read the more impressed I am with dedication and passion of this group of NX1 users.
And of course I am mostly impressed with knowledge and patience and dedication of people involved in modding.
As long time software developer I am studying github repository as well. Although I am very time constrained but given some free time I could try to get involved in mode development.

Remains to be seem if the FF 4K mode has been improved from. a7RII. Unfortunately, Sony missed the chance for releasing an "a9" model which would be the a99II with E-mount and no mirror (give a complimentary adapter for A-mount users).

Blue Fox got a reaction from Frank5 in Documentary for TV broadcast with EOS M1
Panasonic also has some very nice, small m43 cameras like the G7 and the GH4. With a speedbooster they can also use FF lenses. The well-built GH4 can output 10-bit 4K V-LOG to an external recorder. This won't give as much grading possibilities as a Blackmagic camera, but the 4K footage is still very nice.
Regarding shooting your doc on the EOS M1: it's possible, but why would you put so much effort in your sound, your lighting, your story, ... to then use a not-very-good camera? To me it would make more sense to get at least something like a Panny G6, Sony a6000, ... Or to rent a camera.

I can't answer your question directly, but if I were in your shoes I'd most definitely take up the offer to have the work broadcast, and I'd rent the proper camera to shoot your documentary at appropriate spec. It sounds like your career is moving forward, no need to limit yourself to save a few bucks, as this next project will likely lead to more (larger in nature, I presume).

Obviously you meant to quote 'maybe'.  Perhaps you didn't read my post before that when I admitted that sharpness and dynamic range were often messed up in promos.
I don't know what case you are resting.
What we are talking about here is the perceptive (aka actual) resolution.  You said that the GH4 promo looked like upscaled 720p.  Thats subjective, but everyone here can make their own opinion on that.  I would say that in terms of detail, the GH4, whether in the promo video or in general at least gives very detailed full hd when downscaled from 4k. The promo gave an accurate representation of the detail the camera delivers.  I would say that the canon promo video here in terms of detail gives not much more than 720p resolution. I see no reason to doubt that it too is giving an accurate representation of the detail the camera delivers
Expecting the output from the camera to magically increase in detail between now and release is in my opinion delusional.
All canon 1080p stills cams so far have not nearly aproached proper full HD detail, and there is no real reason to expect a change to that with this camera.
This video just seals the final side of the coffin with a row of 20 nail guns.

    This isn't HD - it's like a pirated stream at 360p.
That quality is absolutely terrible - my Canon XHA1 from 2008 shot better HD than this.
To release this as a "launch movie" is crazy.
Hopefully, like every camera launch movie, the person who made it hasn't done the camera justice.

It's made for the Portrait picture profile, set to -3 contrast, -3 saturation, -3 sharpness. He says: "Test footage was shot with a color card, which was used with DaVinci Resolve to generate output LUTs." How precise could this method be?
