"Solved" or not, this is utterly ridiculous and no one should reward Canon with their business even if these cameras are your ideal tool.
Please, reward honest and ethical companies with your business. It is the only way things will get better for all of us.

It is a standing on the shoulders of giants effort - as a1ex said on the ML forum.
I don't think it's helpful for any individual to claim the plaudits.
People should be careful about making money from information that should be freely shared.
And people should rightfully feel miffed if their groundwork, effort and graft is not acknowledged or credited in later discoveries...
Because it's all a collaborative chain.
Anyway the most important thing is that it progresses towards a usable solution, as is happening...
Meanwhile Canon continue to blank us and in the case of Gerald Undone after his review which covered overheating in-depth, completely ghost him.
Meanwhile a site like DPReview which has toed the PR line and not contributed anything to the discourse, get rewarded with thousands of USD via marketing agreements and sponsored content like the EOS R6 video today.
    Fair?
No. On ethical grounds I will be very reluctant ever to buy another Canon product again.

Sony knocked it out of the park in my opinion. It seems to be the best 4K mirrorless camera you can buy. Did they not give us something we didn’t want in a sony camera?
4K120p, 10-bit 4:2:2, ALL-I options, Slog-2 and 3, you almost don’t have to worry about ISO performance, amazing autofocus in all modes even 120p, touch to track AF, face detect, dual SD and CFExpress Type A options, 16-bit RAW output from full sized HDMI (no shitty micro port), overheating doesn’t seem to be a problem for real world use (hopefully!).
I know I said Canon knocked it out of the park with R5/6 but it turned out to be a kiddy pool. So I’ll be cautiously optimistic.
The only real downside of this camera is the 12MP stills which kinda sucks for me when I want a FF camera that can kinda do it all.
I’ll hold out on final judgment until Gerald reviews the hell out of this thing but Damn, E-mount it is for me.

PabloB reacted to OliKMIA in What REALLY prompted Canon suddenly to get their act together with video?
Exactly. A real successful R5 would mean two things:
#1. A massive mental and commercial shift at Canon after realizing how stupid the crippling and product segmentation was for the past 10 years. The mass didn't purchase 5D and Cxxx cameras but they switch to Sony and Panasonic instead.
#2. A huge technological leap that would place Canon ahead of much stronger companies like Sony and Panasonic. After being behind for a decade in sensor and processor tech, not only would Canon beat the competition at the specs game but they'll do it more efficiently (no fan, advanced heat management).

While point #1 seems to be acted based on recent releases (1Dx3, 24p firmware update, etc.), I'm still curious about how Canon would leapfrog the current state of art camera like the S1H than can't even do full frame 4k60 on a smaller sensor implemented on a fan cooled body.
Cxxx cameras have never been cutting edge when it comes to pure specs, resolution and frame rate.

The only thing I wish for was lossless compressed raw, and I don't think thats covered by the red patent.
I think the patent was about lossy compressed only.

so the 83 year old CEO, Chairman and Emperor of Canon Fujio Mitarai basically said that "we are now aware that we have lost the camera market lead and will cut our R&D costs into cameras and try to compensate by selling more Corporate Printers instead". to me it seems like a matter of Pride & Principle when a greedy old fart and his ego can't accept and admit that he was too Greegy and it didnt work and that he should just Quit and commit HARAKIRI and be done, and so will also end the age of weird basic feature crippling on overpriced products that no one wants to buy anymore anyway... Party's Over Canon!
XC10 (wtf!?) why didnt it have EF mount? or EF-S even? probably so we dont buy or use it by mistake. ehh go figure...
even the Canon lens devision is still waiting for a Camera to put all that new 2.5K glass they keep making on...
and then... 1 Card Slot - No Joystick... ok... the EOS R is as aborted baby a 1DXII made on the side with a 700D... A Crippled Perfect Cam. but crippled... beautifull but ugly at the same time! i guess we just wait 2 more years... save up some Rubels... maybe then...
this for me is the embodiment of the "OLD MAN CANON" mentality that has left me (and others it seems) feeling abandoned and even betrayed, still waiting for that 1DC style 4K shooting "5D-MKIV" that never came (...) and the last 'Worthy' Canon (the 5dMKIII which i still use) owes most of the LOVE it got to the Magic Lantern guys anyway. Now 6 yrs later they would rather completely stop playing than admit defeat - i guess it's a Japan thing...
DAMN you Canon for basically forcing me to have to buy that Square Sony!
but i now realise that my wait will never end if i dont...
oh well... i think i'll go take a nap now...

No, you're not. This thread reminded that I needed to retweet a message from a guy who has been locked up in an Australian government concentration camp for the past 6 years due to the color of his skin. If toxic masculinity in the nuclear age doesn't finish us off fast, climate change will do us slowly (not that slowly). The sociopathy of greedy rich men and their worshipers is one hell of a doomsday device. RED and its fanboys are the least of our problems, but it's all relative.

I read the same comment last night and it is both sad and scary that someone would reply like this in the wake of the 21st century on a western state.
All these are completely out of my league but what do I get is that the world suddenly have become too violent, and our "enemies" have to be eliminated or shutting up forever..this brings a certain middle-Aged smell in the atmosphere, of burned human flesh!
Of course I am exaggerating, or maybe not? I mean, it is a simple matter of finding the truth about some codec and the other part is willing to annihilate ethically and/or professionaly one person, what's next? Far far west solutions?
Alas, this is happening, people are taking the "law" into their hands and became judge/jury and punisher, this is a reality of our time, if we do not carefully protect our freedoms and laws after thousands of years of human struggle then a dog eat dog/big fish eats small/the law of the jungle will be tommorows law.
The war for the human rights is an eternal struggle, if socities relax for a couple of years, boom! Suddenly we are a couple of decades back!
It wasn't long ago that women and minorities didn't have a saying on most countries of this world, and surprisingly they still don't on a big part of this planet.
I just hope Red is better than this, and they should be careful with the posts in their friendly forums.
It is one thing to disagree with someone and have a civilized response and another thing to silence them with show of force or scare tactics.
Same here, we shouldn't hope for the demise of anyone and anything, the camera market is enough for everyone of us, and I hoped a much more civilized and above average industry.

I'm not sure you and I can still be friends if you are going round the internet bullying *checks notes* a camera company owned by a billionaire who took legal action to shut you up that they knew you couldn't possibly afford to have defended.

Clearly, as Peter says, the internet bullying must be stopped.
Peter's solution to your spiteful bullying is to *checks notes* go on the internet and demand a camera company owned by a billionaire shuts you down by taking legal action they know you couldn't possibly afford to defend.

Anyway, I'm off to 3D print a new irony meter as my current one has just exploded.

Animosity towards RED management and the RED community is nothing new, it's been going on since Moses was a boy. A lot of it stems from the actions of said people. Filmmakers have a right to be upset about a patent that may or may not be valid, and is certainly something that many in the film community don't believe should exist. it may be legal to deny the struggling indie filmmaker access to internal raw recording, but it certainly isn't cool. It pays to remember we live and work in a community where one day you can be sleeping in your car, and the next you're making Hollywood features (James Cameron). If that turns out to be me, I know what cameras I won't be shooting with.

You are trying to harass me.
    Let's be honest.
I've seen the Red User agitation and it perfectly fits with the broader pattern of bullying RED-related behaviour.
I have evidence of it all over the place from past 8 years I have been in the camera industry. I'd encourage you not to join in yourself.
Nobody intends to disinform the public here. We are are trying to do quite the opposite, to get the facts out. Are we perfect? No. Is it a fast moving situation, understanding wise? Yes. Are we legal experts? No.
The situation is dynamic, our understanding is often not perfect, we're filmmakers, not highly specialised patent lawyers or legal people.
As a filmmaker, I don't have the 110% legal expertise to write the perfectly worded fucking headline on my personal blog first time, every time.
And you shouldn't be hanging me for it.
Especially not in the hornets nest of Red User where Jarrad can see it.
I'd welcome Jarrad on this forum, as you are also welcome, to put his side of the story in detail. To talk about facts. There is a lot to address and not just the Apple situation.
I would like to address the harassment directed at me in 2010 for instance.
And to explain the claims made by Bruce Royce (Jinni Tech).
I am all ears for a good explanation, and I mean that.

This lens is very impressive. I was thinking about purchasing the 50mm Canon 1.2 as I've had a few of them in the past and really miss it. It would have to be adapted to for my Sony A7III as would the Voigtlander but this rendering and bonus sharpness has got me thinking!
We really are spoilt for choice these days, so many great cameras at reasonable prices. Basically just pick one that suits your style and off you go. No excuses for not going out and creating good art.

This is sad news and maybe premature, but in my opinion all the new full frame systems all have strategic flaws.
The BCN numbers are out in Japan which show a limp launch for all the new full frame systems, followed by a tanking of sales soon afterwards until they're a fraction of the Sony A7 III. The bottom line quite literally is that Canon and Nikon are failing to take business away from Sony in the full frame mirrorless market (at least if Japan is anything to go by).

I just wanted to quickly pop in here after reading the article. It's not that I disagree with Andrew's words on the A7III, or that it's ranked in the number 2 spot but that you had nothing positive to say about it. Again, it's not that anything you said was necessarily wrong. But how about giving it credit for shaking things up. For being the new de facto for "Entry level" full frame. For not holding back where other camera manufacturers would have.
Yes, the Fuji has some of the best video quality but I'd say it's only just 'Slightly' better than the A7III. I have a feeling that a lot of the time you won't notice the difference. It's got the Sony beat with color straight out of the camera but most of us do a little grading anyway so I'm not sure I could fault them for that.
But I get it, Fuji deserves the #1 spot and Sony deserves the #2 spot. I agree with that. It's just that it would have been nice if you had mentioned some of it's stronger points:
With the A7III, Sony brought highend features like IBIS, 10 FPS, dual card slots, amazing low light performance, amazing auto focus, beautifully detailed 4K video, improved color science, and far better battery life ("Amazing" I should say) to a platform that many people where on the fence about. And I think they also forced Nikon and Cannon to show their hands. Maybe even before they were ready. The A7III showed the camera world that Sony were serious about about being #1. Even if they only made #2. ;-)
But yes, you're right,  it's a boring looking, utilitarian, working photographer's camera. It's menu's are crap and the screens are average at best and don't flip out and around. But your argument that it doesn't inspire artistic photography... again, I'm not sure I can really fault them for that. Sony has a very subtle, clean, and flare-less design language.  And just like the car industry, some people appreciate flare like BMW while others like the subtlety of Audi.
I have to say, I do feel inspired by my A7III. It's perfect for me because I do a little of everything. Portrait, landscape, still life, street, plus tons of video. it's small size paired with the right lens, makes the A7III great at all of it. To me, Sony hit a sweet spot with this one. Just enough high end features where it matters and skimping on the features that aren't as good as the competition but are ultimately "good enough" to keep the price down. This is the first camera to tick off all the little camera features that I wanted and it did it in a $2000 body. That works for me. Take my money!

Well that is only typical of pro photographers. The D5 is a great pro camera. I am all for the 28-70 F2 and 50 F1.2, as pro lenses. They are an improvement on two of the most popular EF lenses for pros.
That said, you are also entitled to have different preferences and I am different to Fro as well. I am more interested in the artistic side than the 'get the job done' mentality. I would suffer an old blurry manual focus Arriflex lens on an adapter or an anamorphic just to get a certain look. I don't think Fro would, because he's at the mercy of his clients. That side does not interest me at all.
When Canon find out the cluster bomb crater the EOS R has made in their 5DIV and 6DII sales they will swiftly bring out a bunch more models and lenses.
Canon have made their own bestsellers obsolete, which is probably why they put off doing this camera for so long in the first place. They didn't need to, as the previous obsolete cameras were still selling so well.
