For me, I click on the "low light" tab and all is right in the world with my "precious" (A7s) still number 1 for that and still a respectable #29 overall.
Interesting that #1 low light is still the first version A7s while the A7sii is rated higher overall but not for low light.

Years later and still in top ten? (#9) and rated better than a $7k+ Leica? (this is a money is no object rating any price criteria)
Im sure it would be higher in sub $1500 rankings and this is mid 2017 after all the big boys have blown their load of new cams.   Fake News??

The DSLR filmmaker community is funny. It's like "Gimme 8bit proxy, 10bit, RAW, Canon colour science, Log, 4K, IBIS, DPAF and HFR in one package, in A7S form factor, max 2500 bux. I need a silver bullet that covers all cinematography and videography scenarios but make it cheap because I'm not a pro and want to shoot flowers/cat in my garden with it. Also has to shoot on SD cards because Cfast is too expensive".
There's no silver bullet for everything in cinematography. Every camera body and ecosystem has its compromises. You can hold out for the perfect dreamworld unicorn camera, or you can pick up one that fits your shooting style and then actually shoot something.
Also, the C200 looks awesome and exciting - and daaaymn, official 4K RAW on an affordable Canon frame, without the unreliability of hacking stuff. Had I not sprung for an UM4,6K recently I'd be throwing my money at the Canon.

Wow a lot of hype in this thread. I am surprised at the specs (for Canon) as well, especially internal raw, but let's throw some cautions out there before somebody drops £7700 in a fit of excitement.
Main codec at 8bit 4:2:0 150Mbit for 4K is worse than the current £1500 mirrorless cameras.
Canon had no choice but to compete with the FS5 (which beats this on price) - but protecting C300 II came at a cost. The 1080p codec is even worse at 35Mbit, that doesn't compare favourably to the GH5 at all.
Unlike the FS5 you are stuck with the APS-C / Super 35 look. No Speed Booster. Dual Pixel AF is a good selling point though.
Of course you have internal ND filters (mechanical, not electronic like on the Sony rival) but no 5 axis in-body stabilisation... which is more important for production values, IMO.
It remains to be seen how good the 1080/120fps is... if it is moire hell and soft then the FS5 is going to win in a key area.
15 minutes of raw at 128GB is a problem. That will not move RED users over to Canon. No way. And you can only currently edit it in one NLE.
Does it only record 4K RAW or can you drop to 2K? RED raw compression is still streets ahead of everything else.
Same sensor as C100 II / C300 II, which is to be expected. But you'd think for 2017 they could have done an update.
Form factor is that of a work camera, I wouldn't get a kick of enjoyment from taking such a clunky camera out on the streets or on a shooting trip.
The C200 is only 12bit in RAW. The normal codec is 8bit.
Unless you are happy shooting 15 minutes at 128GB and archiving a whole week's shoot at that kind of data rate, you will not be using the 12bit RAW.
RAW should be at least 14bit. At 12bit it starts to degrade. We know this from Magic Lantern's work.
It drops even more dynamic range at 10bit in 60fps raw mode... in that mode the file sizes will be borderline unworkable and the shadows will be scratchy as hell.

Ah my Manchester. Piccadilly Gardens. YOU SURVIVED! I'm surprised you didn't get robbed of both cameras
The 16-50mm F2-2.8 is indeed a superb lens, nothing has bettered it on APS-C since. Good job the crop cameras have Speed Booster, that's all I can say.
AF is great on the NX1, best you can get without going all out Canon Dual Pixel AF and downgrading your image
I also prefer ergonomics of NX1 to the X-T2, less fiddly.
The low light and dynamic range of the NX1 depends on a few settings. Several things help -
First set to RGB range to 16-235, otherwise you lose 2 stops dynamic range with horrible crushed blacks and clipping.
Try master pedestal at +15 at ISO 3200 to reveal lots of nice shadow detail, so you can consider dropping to ISO 1600 if you have a bright enough exposure (fast lens of course helps)
ISO 800 is incredibly clean, virtually same as ISO 200... Use it whenever possible. ISO 1600 and 3200 are acceptable under right circumstances.
The high bitrate hack (160MBit H.265 = 320Mbit H.264, woooo!) also improves the image further.
And no sensor crop, no short record length limit like X-T2.
Of course dial down sharpness to -10 on the NX1. You should almost never see moire in 4K but I do accept it can happen with certain things (if your lens is sharp enough!)
NOOOO you sent it back? They will be hard to find in future.
I have used a lot of higher end stuff... 1D C, 1D X II, GH5, A7S II and I honestly think the NX1 is more FUN to shoot with than any of them.
It may not have 5 axis IBIS, LOG, 10bit, full frame sensor, and granted those are all lovely, but they are luxuries and not having the video optimised ergonomics on the Canons, and having a slower, less responsive, weirder time operating the A7S II and GH5 is NOT as much fan as the swift little bird NX1.
Good choice with the RX1R II, but consider the RX100 IV to accompany it - the slow-mo / video modes are superb.
Actually the NX1 with latest firmware and hack shoots pretty good 1080/120fps which only the Leica SL betters. For the price that is very nice and way better than 60p for slow-mo.
Unless you intend to shoot 60p for 60p and not for slow-mo... but then that isn't a very cinematic choice
A lot of cameras do acceptable 1080/60p quality... check out the D750 and A7S (original version in S35 mode) for instance.
Did you try D.I.S. mode? The NX1 surprises when it is enabled on the 16-50 F2... Again a firmware Easter egg
I usually find poor stability ruins a shot before rolling shutter does.
When shooting from a tripod it's good to do slow pans and locked down shots, very cinematic.
NX1 isn't the worse for rolling shutter, it's merely average and I'd put the Sony A6300 and A6500 as the king of skew.
In 1080p the NX1 has an astonishing 2ms rolling shutter like an Alexa.
The colours in this video will never fail to amaze me...
Really shows the analogue strengths of a CCD sensor for colour and a RAW codec.
But I really do think the NX1 gets you close and with way more fun and far less hassle.

Ever since I gave up my Nikon D5200 a few years ago for the Panasonic GX7, I've been dearly missing one lens. The 17-50mm f2.8. I tried the 12-35mm f2.8 on the Panasonic but didn't like it. Then the Samsung NX1 came out along with the 16-50mm f2-2.8. At the time, it was way above my budget. So I've since considered other systems such as the Sony but for one reason or another, they didn't fit my needs. But now, over 2 years later, I've finally been able and willing to pick one up. Luckily as well, the camera body is entirely unused. The manufacturer sealing was still in place.
One of the first things I do when I get a new camera is to compare it to my other camera(s) for things like colour, dynamic range and noise. I've made many such tests before but never usually post them. This time I've taken the time to do it properly and edit it together for all to see.
First up is the X-T2 vs NX1 shootout. The main point of this was to see the differences in colour and tonality. See the video description for all the fine details on settings.
And next is this high iso comparison with two other cameras I currently have. Again, you can see the video description for all the setting details.
Some thoughts on the differences between the X-T2 and NX1:
AF-C and focus pulling with AF works much better on the older NX1 than the X-T2; in video anyway.  The 16-50mm f2-2.8 is a ridiculously good lens, image wise. And the focus rings works just like a classic lens. The grip and button layout of the NX1 is far better. I've always felt the retro styling of Fujifilm were a detriment to their functionality. The downside to the NX1 is that it is far inferior to the XT2 in low light. The last shot in the shootout was shot at ISO 800 on the NX1 and 1600 on the XT2, yet the NX1 shows less detail and more muddiness due to the noise reduction.  Also the NX1 is far sharper in 4k and HD but has more aliasing and moiré in the latter.
Anyway, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the difference between the images I'm yet undecided of which system to keep, even though the NX1 would finally fulfil my want.. or need of a 16-50mm f2.8.

Juxx989 reacted to jhnkng in FIFTY THREE YEARS (Short Doc shot on BM Micro Cinema Camera)
This was shot in Hiroshima over a couple of days in 2016. I'd just gotten the BM Micro Cinema Camera and I wanted to give the camera a good shakedown, and I thought a personal project was a nice way to do that. I shot a lot on the Tokina 11-16 with the BMPCC speedbooster, and various Nikon primes. I tried to lock in down in sticks where I could, since I hadn't really worked out how to rig it for handheld at the time, and since I was travelling I didn't have all my parts with me to franken rig it as I was shooting, so the hand held stuff (particularly in the car) is pretty messy.

I struggled with moire like crazy, I only had a Tiffen IRND with me and it wasn't always enough ND so I was stopping down for some of those outdoor shots, which really amped up the moire. I managed to tone down the worse of it, but an AA filter is a must with this camera if you intend to take it outside. I shot it in Prores LT, edited in Premiere Pro and graded in Resolve. Some of the night shots needed noise reduction, but mostly to remove the colour noise -- I actually like the structure of the noise, just not that keen on red and blue ants crawling all over the screen. Neat Video does a good job of removing chrominance noise while leaving the luminance noise, and it blends nicely with a little bit of grain using Filmconvert.

Hope you enjoy the film, love to hear what you think!

Yeah Alex Buono was the DP for their shorts for a long time. I think he left last season to co-direct Documentary Now. He used to show BTS stuff on twitter. They used everything from 7D's, C300s, Alexa, RED, and actual film. The intro of the show from 2010 to 2015 was shot on a 7D. They also made custom aperture mattes to put in the camera that turned bokeh into the letters SNL.

Alex Buono is a guy to search for if you're curious about some of this.
They've used arri and RED and canon 7d's. Sometimes a cast member shoots something with a friend on a dvx100 and Lorne lets it in. Since they've been going for a hundred years, and don't care if the official crew is leading the way (and even they experiment), they've used everything.

It feels very easy to use offset in resolve and push everything towards black. Also have been studying still frames from movie trailers and James miller shots and many times the whites ain't white they are pushed almost completely into the mids and tinted.

About Black Master Pedestal.. I have tested it and found it doesn't actually bring out shadow detail at all. It just crushes the darker end of the tonal range into a higher value. So you actually have less to work with!

I really never tried this before... I would make changes write down on some paper the settings and shot it like a clap board and import several tests into editor...   but I could have been doing it live!

    Here is another one
It sounded like he was saying you can check out a video in editor and if you like the settings you can copy it back to the memory card and automatically force the NX-1 to change the cameras settings to it?   Im a little foggy on this one (but I have been up for 30 hours)

I mean you can see what right what it does... Raises your blacks/shadows in camera, so you can expose more for highlights and still maintain more shadow detail than you otherwise would with a lower black level. Granted I've never tested the benefit of shooting in camera and just raising shadows a touch in post, but I always shoot with mine between 7 and 15, I think it makes a pretty big difference.
