  1. I REALLY am trying hard to like the GH5 but the footage just looks consumerish camcorder to me.  I am a Canon guy but would love the smaller form factor and the lighter codec of the GH5 4K60 vs the 1Dx2.  Can anyone show me some me GOOD cinematic footage from a GH5 other than cat videos and backyard tests that would sway my mind?  It can be with native lenses or a speed booster adapter with an ef lens just something that can give this camera a glimmer of cinematic hope for me.

Canon anyone comment on if the 1DXII can record 4k 24p to the same 1000x CF cards that the 1DC can for sustained amounts of time.

The 1066x cards work just fine in the 1Dx2 for 4K24  They also work for about 3 seconds in 4K60 but then it stops due to buffer. So you can get some quick b-roll if you are in a pinch and ran out of CFast cards :)

Awesome - thanks for the info.

The important thing for me is how the camera operates with a 5" SmallHD 501 and whether the the 4k footage can be pushed to look, ahem "organic, cinematic, filmic"... y'know, those words we use to describe the feel of a cinematic image.

The camera works perfectly with the 501.  I did a shoot with it a month ago and used the Small HD 501 on top of my ronin to help me check focus while the camera was flying low.

The ergonomics for stills stand out vs the A7S II, much nicer. For video the live-view experience is a big improvement with much higher frame rate screen, very quick to switch between video and stills mode on a lever, very quick to pause the AF by pressing a function button (either toggle or hold) or lock onto a subject simply by pressing the touch screen. The AF system on this camera is the best I've ever used be it video or stills, it rocks in both. Dual Pixel AF is an absolute bomb. It recognises faces in near darkness even when you can't see them yourself on the screen. It never seems to slow down much even in low light. Even at F1.2 on my beloved EF 50mm F1.2L it does a very good job so you barely have to think about focus. Not used manual focus on it yet ONCE.

The automatic white balance maintains a warm naturalness to scenes with mixed indoor / outdoor lights, very nice indeed and never seems too cold or clinical. Colour is astounding on this camera.

The 120fps quality is good for that kind of frame rate, and it is full frame. Better than the A7S II 120fps. It is almost the same quality as the 1080/24p. The 1080/24p is as detailed as the 1D C's full frame 1080/24p but without the moire correction.

Not tried the HDMI output yet but has option for 1080/60/50p in the menu, so should do nice 1080/60p 1.3x crop when set to 4K 60p mode in-cam.

4K image quality is as you'd expect :)

    Fucking good.

The file sizes are a downside as is the moire in full frame video mode 1080p. I used to shoot a lot of 1080p on the 1D C to get around the massive MJPEG codec.

Rolling shutter MUCH less than A7S II and 1D C in 4K!

Will say a lot more in the review, as only had the camera for 2 days! Bought it in Berlin at a store brand new.

Welcome back to the Canon side ;)

Is the crop factor really 1.74? Or with 4K DCI it's 1.62? If it's 1.62, it's exactly the same as in BM cameras and Red, which actually is a S35 crop. The 8.8 Mp frame grab looks the same as Red. Now, getting wide on a s35 camera is always tough. But getting wider on a FF with 11-16 Tokina had also been tough. No?

I just played around today with my 5Dmk4 - 4K24 and the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 I think it will do a great job replacing my 16-35 on the full frame 1080 mode

I'm hoping the delay in announcing a replacement, if that rumor is true, is because they're adding some features that will turn heads and take back a bit of the thunder Sony seems to have stolen.

News Shooter says the crop is 1.74 in the title of their article.

DPreview has camera in hand and says its 1.64  https://t.co/yt46N2MI91

Your stills camera isn't a great video camera, my screwdriver makes a shitty hammer. We both got problems.

Does Canon have to remove video function all together before people get the friggen point?

Great is a very subjective word... different strokes for different folks.. for me its perfect :)

I do agree that if you're gonna buy a full frame camera for video, having it do full frame video in all modes would be nice.

But it doesn't, and is that really a big deal?

Are we sad that Canon has decided to not compete in the hybrid segment that they accidentally created all those years ago?  Are we disappointed that Canon's legacy is somehow jepordized?

Above all, how is this camera's reality anything new?  We've known that Canon isn't going to compete against their own cinema line, right?

    BINGO!!!!

Hurt only in terms of storage space, MJPEG codec @ 500Mbps and 4:2:2 is actually a very high quality codec, the best codec among DSLRs and the only 422 codec used apart from cinema cameras.

Luke... I have to say THANK YOU for posting CLEAR and true statements about the 5Dmk4... It seems EVERYONE is blindly hating on this camera because it doesn't do a FF 4K@120 video, take photos, brush your teeth, comb your hair, and take out your trash. There is never going to be a PERFECT camera let alone one for under $2999.  And if ANYONE thinking a GH5 is going to be a stellar STILLS camera has got to be kidding themselves.  Canon has made no bones about the fact that the 5Dmk4 is a STILLs camera first and foremost with really good basic video features which are MORE than useable in capable hands.  I also find it VERY interesting the people who crap on canon the most never want to show their own demo reel of work.... just my two cents... thanks Luke and keep hope alive!! Let the bashing begin ;)

P.S. Im very interesting in see how the Fuji X-T2 does for 4K even though it's a dreaded 1.7 crop I always liked Fuji Colors and its a pretty nice priced option.

  9. @myJTP   I would not wait on Canon for anything :)   Those guys are not really addressing the 4k market at all and I bet its still a while before any 4k dslr at all.  They will not put in a dslr before the C100 mark II and that is not even a year old yet.   I think get a gh4 is a huge vaule for what it offers and then add vlog to that... damn this is monster of a camera for under 1500 bucks with vlog or get one used and its even cheaper.

Any word on which metabones adapter to use?  Atomos just came out with a Ninja Assassin – New 4K HDMI Recorder for $1,295 it does 10Bit 4:2:2 will that pair up nicely with the GH4?

  10. So with this news I might want to get a GH4 to shoot 4K.  I have Canon 5Dmk3's and a full line on canon lenses.. whats the best metabones adapter to get for the GH4?  Any issues with the adapter like the camera not working properly etc during shooting?

    Or should i just get a sony RX10ii? While I wait for Canon's answer to 4K DSLR via a 5Dmk4 or 5DC.

    Thanks!
