This is so meh for the price. I get that there could be some good engineering to make it a bit smaller. If bloggers and autofocus was the play, from what I have seen so far it's not that great.

Dang, I just noticed the "Max Rec. Bitrate" on XAVC S-I 4K is 1,200 Mbps 😮
Notice how they support V90 or faster for that.  What is weird to me, is that sure if you multiply out the 299 MB/s (Mega Bytes/sec) rating of the Sony Tough G cards you get 299 MB/s x 8 bits/1MB or 2,392 Mbps (Mega Bits/sec), so clearly those Tough G cards are capable of such speeds.
HOWEVER, the whole point of a V rating is to identify the max sustained write speed of the card and V90 is 90MB/s sustained write or 90MB/s x 8 bits/1MB = 720 Mbps, which is supposedly the max sustained bitrate from a V90 card.  So not, sure if Sony has a typo here or if their TOUGH G cards are more like V150 cards which is the rating that would be needed to sustain writes at 1,200Mbps

Maybe Tilta can join the legal fight. After all, they spent time and money developing a cage and cooling system for the R5 that will never work as the overheating doesn't exist!

Just goes to show that companies these days don't do ANY product testing before releasing products. If they did, the R5 wouldn't be on the market and Tilta wouldn't be offering a solution to a problem that will never work.

holy crap, IKR!!   NOT gonna happen, over Sony's dead body, lol.   Can you imagine their fastest camera, also having strong video adjustability?
I will be honest with you though, Straight out of the camera, that A9 shoots beautiful 4K footage.  First time I ever felt no need to muck with the settings on the camera.  I usually spend a good bit of time coming up with custom Picture Profiles (when I am going to shoot B roll to go with an FS7ii or FX9, I shoot them against a color checker card like the Passport and scope out the levels of the camera I want to "copy its' colors", then take the B Roll cam (a7Riv, a7iii, a6600, etc) and point at the same card in the same lighting and adjust the colors via the picture profiles until I get the lines to match up as close as possible.  btw, this process takes a loooooooooooooooong time, and you have to go back and forth in the picture profile settings sometimes.  I can see why Andrew charges for those settings.  Any way, once I get them nailed down, I can then shoot with the "color science" of the main camera.
With the a9, I can't do this obviously, but I still profile it under the same conditions, so I know about how much off it is from the main camera, which makes color correcting a little easier.
I am not concerned that the a7Siii doesn't have "S-Cinetone" colors or the "Venice color science", because I will just make my own picture profile, that essential gives me just that.  NOT to mention, this will be the very first mirrorless where I felt we could actually use S-Log3.  So I'm 100% confident that I will be able to match the colors from the a7Siii with the FX9 or even the Venice (sadly I don't do much with that beautiful beast).

Hey man, if it works for you, fine, enjoy your camera. I really don't want to continue to debate the merits of Nikon in a Sony thread. Its a fine system and if it works for you that's great, it doesn't work for me and that's not changing soon. Apologies for derailing this discussion and bringing Nikon talk into a Sony thread. Here's another BTS video from one of the launch videos, its in French but the subtitles will auto translate.

This honestly doesn't reflect well on anybody, least of all yourself.  Freezing the thread for a cool-off was a good idea.  My advice (unsolicited I know!) would be to take that down for a similar period and then consider if you really want it out there.
It comes off as sour grapes, and just isn't a smart response.

Andrew, the comments about grading weren’t intended for you specifically.  Read the post.  I was talking in generalities about recent facebook groups I’d left and a similar entitled tone here. It was not a personal attack but you chose to take it that way.
Cmon, I shoot these shots for BMD for exactly this purpose. To be downloaded and graded.  If I was truly precious about it I wouldn’t do it again and again would I ?
You’re throwing a tantrum, publicly, because you dind’t get an invite to a BMD event that is seems like few even knew about.
Somehow you think that’s got something to do with me so you went and wrote a post about me. A really lovely piece too.
I’ve said it already a thousand times.
    I don’t work for them.
I don’t have that much to do with them day to day.  Last contact I had with anyone at BMD was weeks ago.
It’s not my job to make sure YOU get some attention from them.  That’s on you to make that case.
And by the way, this kind of childish unprofessional behaviour is exactly the kind of reason any company would think twice about working with you.
Instead, you launch a highly personal assasination blog post as well as numerous personal attacks because I dared to try and explain that to you in a way that you thought wasn’t deferential enough ?
You don’t do this for free.  You sell something.  I don’t but you actually do.
Having traffic come to this site means you have a greater chance of selling something.
You sell LUT’s and you sell guides and you use the traffic here to do so. So don’t pretend all this free traffic is somehow a favour to BMD and free publicity.
I didn’t even see the post you made about the BMD footage till your personal attack on me,  but I noticed when I read your BMD post you’re mixing in a bunch of references to LUT’s you’re trying to flog.
    How about this...

So with no built-in ND filter (and still no filter thread) worse aperture, same bad battery life and same 4k recording limit (I doubt if overheating has improved) and of course no mic jack. Not to mention the price.
How is this an improvement for video shooters?

thefactory reacted to John Brawley in Golden rules on blocking the actors!
Well you're talking about two elements of actor craft here.
Acting performance and then staging (blocking).
Are you worried about the actors performance or how they're blocking and staging the scene ? Or both ?
For sure they're related, but in my view (and I'm a DP not a director) actors want to be lead through a conversation about blocking.  It's a negotiation.  But there's nothing worse than demonstrating by example or showing them another scene or being literal.
Blocking is one of the most mis-understood elements of the craft of filmmaking,.  And no one ever says "great staging" or "amazing blocking" when talking about a film they like.  They're talk about editing, performance, the photography, the design...but never ever blocking.
It takes a while tor realise how powerful a tool this can be and it really SHOULD be the director that drives these choices.  From staging / Blocking comes coverage.  And it factors hugely in performance.
Normally I prefer to have the set cleared, you listen to the actors say the words and then you block.  This is a very very crucial and creative time for the director and actor.  The director may have really specific ideas about how they want the scene to stage and move through it's dramatic beats.  Or you might be looking for them right there and then in that moment and you work WITH the staging as you block to try and labour, extract and bring these beats into the light.
Good actors will be able to adapt their blocking as you talk ab out beats that are important.  They find ways to "physicalise" what you're asking for emotionally and dramatically.
If the issue the OP has here is just "overacting" my best would be to ask the actors to "do less" or "scale it back".  As an experiment sometimes it's fun to run the scene without speaking the lines.  Just do it in body language.  Try a rehearsal like that. Then tell them to do the silent rehearsal with as little body language as possible.
There are some great and obvious examples of blocking WITH CAMERA (hey I'm a DP) and how the actor blocking is DRIVING what you do with a camera.

thefactory reacted to Django in Sony A7 III first impressions - what is going on with metering in video?
The one area where Sony usually keeps ahead is sensor tech.
But the days of Sony "leading the way" are kinda past i feel.. they were the laziest this year at NAB by just adding a picture profile to the FS5 and calling it a day with their Mk2.
We're still seeing the same 8-bit 100mbs XAVC codec in their third generation MILCs. They took away big features like timelapse from previous gen. Still no AF-S in video. Still color science issues, still same resolution EVF, convoluted menu system...etc.
Meanwhile Fuji put a 200mbps codec, DCI 2K/4K options, Flog/Eterna, IBIS, touch screen, top display etc in only their second 4K body ever. Camera has it's quirks but not bad overall improvements imo.
Ergonomics & color science wise i also find Fuji is way ahead the competition.
But the real battle is going to be at Photokina in september with XT3, A7S3, Pocket 4K as well as much expected FF MILCs from CaNikon.

This is not a DSLR, but it probably has the most lasting value of any: the Sony FS700R, which came out in 2012 and has been upgraded by firmware updates since then. It has the same sensor as the FS7 and FS5, and now shoots via SDI 4K DCI 12bit RAW, 4K DCI 60P , and 4K DCI 120P in burst mode via the SDI port (exactly the same capability as the FS5). No actual camera has yet best that. It is ugly and ungainly, but its innards are good and its buttons and dials work well.
