For anyone that has Magic Bullet Looks, I've been using 4 way color corrector as the first treatment on V Log instead of a LUT, or S Curve. For some reason it works really well and keeps the midtones in tact. Here I crushed the blacks and blasted the highlights in 4 way CC, then added M31 Rec709 LUT.

Slashcam has discovered that the Arri Log C to REC709 LUT curve is nearly identical to V Log. I've tried it briefly and it does look to be the best fit so far.

So far I have heard no mentioning of WB in combination with V-log …it has a huge influence and I actually suspect there is a bug related to WB an V-log causing the macro blocking artifacts.
I did some tests with the following settings: WB 4000K and 4200K, Natural vs V-log, Shutterspeed 30, ND 1.2, Exposure 6400, everything in All-I 25fps 1080. Shots where 2 stops underexposed. I used V-log to custom (own brew) on the Vlog clips.
As you hopefully can see in the picture, the noise pattern of the Natural clips is identical in both 4000K and 4200K. The only difference is the color.
The noise patterns (macro-blocking) of the V-log clips are completely different for each Kelvin value. Only when you reach the top values (±9000 and up) the patterns become more identical.
It is as if the WB adds ad-random posterization to V-Log clips as if the white balance is part of "V-log space". I do not know enough about WB and how it works or should work but to me this looks and feel like a bug.
If it's not a bug …I would like to know how to set the WB because even Custom has a a different noise distribution each and every time you set one. The second picture shows this. Each of the four custom settings give different noise patterns, even though the conditions were the same at the time of creation. The two at the bottom look quite similar but that is luck. To be clear these are not four frames out of the same clip. The macro block islands change shape but stay where the are …and their position and number are completely random as far as I can tell.
Hope someone can either confirm it's a bug or tell me how to use WB properly.
    Thanks.

I always give Mattias a thumbs up on his vids but on this one I didn't vote as I think those who argue there might be a danger with some vintage lenses are more likely to be correct. Still, I did laugh at the scientific chart Mattias included, so thanks for that, and I don't think he deserves to be attacked for the vid- I disagree with him about a vid, it's not the end of the world. I wish everyone would chill out and dial down the outrage.

Please stop, you use some BS article as a source???
I have lived in America, I went to school there.
I have lived for 30 years in Sweden, I was born here.
I am a working journalist since 15 years, a real journalist, not some blogger.

That Sweden has a greater extent of freedom of speech than the USA is a fact.
You will have to give me way more than a link to one of the internets most notorious BS sites to prove me wrong. I suggest you just drop it because you are making a fool of your self.
Also I want to know which Swedish broadcasters you have worked for.If you haven't worked for none, well that just means you have no authority to claim my statement was false.
Also its off topic and you are merely spamming the thread.

(BTW, Told two of my friends about your statements and they burst into laughter.)

That shot is a pretty extreme DR example. Sun blasting the pavement. It's also 1080 at 96fps which is the worst in regards to overall res/detail. Look at other shots and you'll see a difference. Trust me I've been shooting with the GH4 ALOT since it was released and the highlight rolloff is much improved.

I saw your posts over on PV. I tried my hand at it with the demo but couldn't figure out the best way to identify and adjust things. so I went out instead and shot some more V-Log with a Dog Schidt Optiks FF58 lens I rented this morning.

Nothing against folks who shoot weddings (a paycheck's a paycheck) but the couples who participate in these things for their special day are absolutely mad.

"Stare into each other's eyes and nuzzle your noses together while I get the exposure right" would have me and my partner bursting into laughter.

"Next up, please do a pretend marital fall-n-catch and then have a snog" would be the final straw.

I'm not sure it won't not, but if it doesn't, it might not be because it's not user error. Or the opposite could be true.

Jup. Almost as if they tricked people. It's like you're in a mall and walk into this one store and they've got a little promotional stand to sample something... you like it so much, you come back again a little later for another free sample at the end of your shopping spree hoping the lady doesn't recognise you from earlier. Still leaves you wanting more... you know you can't keep showing up for free samples forever and finally just give in a buy the damn thing to enjoy it in abundance and all its glory.
Does make sense just to pay for it. In some way everybody that's serious about their video gets the real NLE deal too, I guess you could probably download a cracked version from somewhere, but if it's something you actually have to work with... you just want to keep it legit and furthermore: with the least amount of hassle/worries about functionality. Anyways, they've got my 103 or so EUR already. Just would appreciate it if they'd ship out those keys already, really don't see what's keeping them. In meanwhile it can't hurt to leave 2.3 on there with the workaround V-LOG already sampling it. Already having some experience with how to shoot & process the footage will save some time having to figure it out later.

A user at Personal View pointed out that the Cineon Converter in Premiere is only 8 bit, instead of 32 bit. That is what causes the banding in the sky. The same shot with a 32 bit LUT applied gets rid of the banding.

    Varicam v-LOG to REC709

Modified v-LOG to REC709 (as posted in this thread by Marshal Davis)

Varicam v-LOG to REC709 followed by a 709 to FUJI LUT

ISO 400, Speed 50fps, f5.6 - it was very overcast when I shot this and "original v-LOG to REC709" looks pretty accurate to what I was seeing when shooting...

No additional curves tweaked, colour correction, etc.

Loving the colours - seems like V-Log has an inherently cinematic look. Very impressed, already I much prefer this to Sony's S-Log2.

From the info that has been shared here and in the article linked on the other page, shouldn't it be enough most of the time to ETTR using zebras at 75% (or 80% - need to test this) almost all the time and then pull down as needed? Shouldn't that do the trick as well or even better than the 18%/42 IRE/greycard/waveform with external recorder thingie majingie magic? Anyway it will be fun to figure this all out. Can't wait for the 2.4 firmware update with 4:2:2

Haha thanks. No tripod. Only used Panasonic 12-35. Fader ND. You are right, contrasty images are looking the best to me. Low con looks have some noise, but I'm testing out Neat Video to reduce it a bit.
