  1. For anyone that has Magic Bullet Looks, I've been using 4 way color corrector as the first treatment on V Log instead of a LUT, or S Curve. For some reason it works really well and keeps the midtones in tact. Here I crushed the blacks and blasted the highlights in 4 way CC, then added M31 Rec709 LUT.

    That looks great!

  2. I have no idea how lenses developed a discussion on international rights of speech :d Trust me both the united states and sweden are blessed with a generous amount of freedom of expression and if any of you care to give me a visit here you'd understand, where I was constantly harassed and arrested by the ''national security bureau'' for ''Displaying dangerous atheism thoughts on forums'' in a Muslim state. Yes that's actually a crime. In fact, the official constitutional law here sentences me to death if it shall be made public that I don't believe in God, so I have to keep it to myself or face social and legal consequences, to the point of spending hours a week in Mosques just to follow tradition. Trust me when I say, you're both blessed =D Whenever I am in Europe or the USA I feel as if a burden was lift of my chest and I can smell the air freely and be who I am. It's wonderful. Back of topic of lenses radioactivity: .

@Mattias There is a countless number of photographic lenses out there that do have high levels of radioactivity, it's a fact, and while the video is funny testing one/two lenses with a 3.5mm geiger meter with a phone app should not be taken by people as proof that old lenses contain zero radioactivity, that's the incorrect message that viewers will come out with, so I would clearly flag it for humor, saying that many lenses do contain radioactive elements. Just to be sure no one takes it seriously.

@Rich Don't eat you Olympus please.

I know it's humor but just to give some real information:

On a serious note, really I would not ingest it, lick it, taste it. The harmless nature of vintage lenses' thorium radioactivity is due to human skin, we are practically wearing a completely sealed, 100% tight, praticle-proof vest covering 98% of our body surface area, no risk at all of handling and using and storing these lenses. The particles emitted from radioactive lenses cannot penetrate farther than the outer-most dead layer of skin that you wash out everyday.

However, once you remove the vest (skin) you are exposing extremely sensitive epithelium that small lenses radioactive particles can destroy many active cells. Hence, in layman terms the radioactivity of lenses is only harmful if they come in contact with non skin-covered areas of ones's body for a long time (Eyes, oral cavity, rectum, inner ear, exposed injuries, to a degree tattoos, and of course inside the body). So aside from the extremely damaging nature of ingesting glass (you can return it to powder state before eating to avoid the physical damage), the radiation of an old lens can and will cause harmfull effects when swallowed. One lens, depending on how it measures, and depending on where it will land, will most probably cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, and two/three lenses could result in a small ulcer, which is pretty annoying.

Bottom line, these lenses have ZERO harm on you, unless ingested or stored in a body cavity (Which I understand why we would all want to do that but just avoid it with vintage glass, do it with nice modern L primes or something)

What caught our attention here when we were researching this was the notion that  some camera viewfinders contained the same glass radioactivity, which is a case that's really worth studying and should be the one to speak of, due to the obvious nature of using viewfinders in contact with exposed eyes for extremely long periods of times. However, we couldn't find any models or information on this. So if they do exist, in vintage or new cameras, it'd be extremely helpful if anyone knows anything about these cameras to truly avoid using them altogether having a potential real hazard on human health. We'd be glad to publish about it in scientific journals if they do exist.

just great, now I have to save up for lens cases :(

  3. Something I've done numerous times and no one has ever noticed. Convert your native files to ProRes in post and deliver them.

sure, as someone that comes from an audio background, I can tell you for a fact that this sort of lossy upsampling happens on an hourly basis - sometimes through ignorance, other times, because people know that know one will ever know... because they couldn't.

  4. I'm about to post a mega test... to the EXTREME... lol

I wonder what people will think... one thing I think is pretty obvious though is that the v-LOG with the REC709 LUT is superior to vanilla Cinelike D. OBVIOUSLY, you can colour correct things a million ways, but even just as a starting point, the colours are a lot more accurate IMO.

EDIT: Saying that I haven't really done much work AFTER applying the LUTs; I know there's some colour banding issues, so bear that in mind, YMMV, etc.

Modified v-LOG to REC709 (as posted in this thread by Marshal Davis)

Varicam v-LOG to REC709 followed by a 709 to FUJI LUT

    XqA3d0y.jpg

ISO 400, Speed 50fps, f5.6 - it was very overcast when I shot this and "original v-LOG to REC709" looks pretty accurate to what I was seeing when shooting...

No additional curves tweaked, colour correction, etc.

  6. I would say this, with the exact same camera settings, luts that say "vlog to 709" and "Cine D to 709" produce radically different results...  I'm not sure if that is meant to be the case (remember I'm an idiot), but if it's NOT, well... it is.

  7. There's some horrible banding/colour artefacts going on in that video (as with my graded image on previous page). I'm going to make an early call and say V-Log is a ProRes friendly profile that's a danger zone for internal shooting.

I am going to shoot a bunch of stuff tomorrow and see what I can see... I shot a few minutes earlier, just a few, then used the v-log to 709 LUT and it wasn't absurdly noisy, or artefact-y, and the colours looked really amazing...

But I'm sure this will all wash out one way or the other in a few days :)

  8. If you have LUT Utility or Color Finale, you can use LUTS with FCPX. You can get a Cineon LUT from VisionColor through their Impulz Collection, but I think you have to get the Ultimate Package. There probably  is a solo Cineon LUT floating around the super highway but I couldn't find one after 10 pages of Google search. Ed David had a whole post on Cineon last week.

This is free for a limited time ^^^ normally $50.

  9. hahaha. I don't know why people read something else into posts. I never said it is stealing, because the glitch is caused by Panasonic. I only said morally. Law and morality don't always go hand in hand.
More than anything else, this news made me laugh like crazy. Panasonic took so long to come up with pricing and selling the GH4 Vlog, and then, a little glitch has made it all free. Maybe if they target selling another few thousand GH4s, they can easily recover the cost. Or even better, release it for Free on the FZ100, the LX100, the G7, and the GX8 too, and let people go out to buy all those cameras, with the new Vlog. IMHO it sounds like an interesting marketing idea.

the worst news for them is the gh4R!

If they do make it free in response (which I don't think will happen), the new pre-installed LOG ver, which cost more, is DOA...

  10. Not sure if we're looking at the same video / stream quality. Watching on a 1080p screen, the text is not sharp at all, indicating it's a lower resolution upsized.

Here's a screengrab, this is as good as it gets. No detail at all (because of crappy uploaded file, I'm sure). 1080p at 5 tot 10 mbps can you perfecly sharp.

    screengrab.jpg

very strange that that is what they choose to upload though, considering they could EASILY make it look nicer online...

  11. oooh! Now I'll be up late again!

Thank you really... this is exactly the sort of thing I need to embrace :)

funny about not shooting wide open because you can... the more I learn the more I think I kinda just need to trust what I see... I'm kinda glad I made videos and even did corporate work basically without knowing anything... because now all this knowledge feels less inhibiting...  not sure that will make sense, but it does to me... :)

  12. Of course!

But don't take my word for it. Go on Vimeo and search SLR Magic for some examples. In fact, that's a great way to evaluate any camera gear, short of getting your hands on it yourself.

I do really appreciate it though, as I'm really just trying to learn about what's out there, and what it can do for me... :)

  13. Hey CTRT,

If you're looking for manual primes to compliment your Panasonic 12-35, I'd recommend checking out the SLR Magic line. They're all metal, fast as hell, and have a creamy, 3D rendering style that's extremely cinematic. I currently own the 12 and the 25 for my BMPCC/GH3, and they've performed extremely well thus far.

    thank you!

I WILL look at them as you've just described exactly what I'd be looking for!!

    Much appreciated!

  14. thats awesome, great to hear.

unlike cameras and lenses, one thing that you cant buy is talent, which you seem to have plenty of based on your original post~! im sure that your practice as a musician informs your video work in all kinds of ways, intangibles that i might not even understand...!

if i could give you one piece of advice going forward, it would be this: avoid the rabbithole of technology research; its neverending

shoot with your new camera. its great. id buy one today!

    cheers

p.s. it is WAY too hot for my st bernard-great dane in san diego rn

    :d

thanks for your advice, all of it...  I will be shooting with this for a long time... the only other tech I want really is a couple of quirky lenses and a new tripod... :d

The whole LUTs thing has really opened my eyes to a lot of potential for music videos, etc., and yes, music GREATLY informs how I edit, etc.

Here's a little thing I did today with my daughter:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpKUCgdrW4o

Obviously it's not anything, but a little bit of footage for me to play with, but it still looks amazing... for just 5 mins of work.

and look after your dog, it's meant to live in the alps I think!
