PannySVHS reacted to PPNS in 2023 In Review - How Did Your Year Go?
I’m working on a new reel and website. I had a weird year.
Jan 23: got fired from my full time job
feb - sept 23: got fairly depressed due to being rejected after around 350 job applications.
at the same time i tried out freelancing while searching for a new job, done a little decently paid corporate work, a lot of barely paid and unpaid work as a dp, gaffer or colorist on short films and music videos.
oct - dec 23: got lucky due to a cinematography bootcamp i followed and ended up working as a DIT on a feature.
income wise it ended up being almost the same as 2022, so hopefully the freelancing thing will pick up more steam. I’m going to try making some spec ads with some directors i know this year, so we could get work that way.

I would guestimate, not less than 2000 and not more than 2500 dollars.
Everywhere else in the world, more. As per.
The strong rumour is it’s going up in size & build to between the Z6ii and Z8 so both of those factors will command a premium.
Obviously it has to go up in spec or folks will moan, if not have complete meltdowns.
It won’t have all the Z8 spec because it can’t and the biggest question (for me anyway) is whether it will have the old 24mp sensor, the 33mp from the Sony A7iv, or something else.
Personally I think they would sell more if it’s the 33, but… That could also help command more of a premium and push it towards $2500.
I’m not paying above 2.5k for one regardless of what it is or has as the current model has all I need for my intended purpose.
If it’s within the range above and in time, I’m going to give it a hard look at the very least in case there is something that either might cause me to rearrange my plans slightly or warrants spending what would then be an extra €1000+, but I doubt that will be the case.
Never say never, but I could be tempted and it’s not a stupid amount to spend compared with say a Z8 (which I am not massively keen on) or a Z9 which is a bit overkill, but I really like.

Ok, so this thread reminds me of when I was young and we were going through all of my dad's old slides and we came across one where, well... it wasn't so much a selfie as it was really him just not sure which end of the camera to look through when taking a photo.

No need to apologise..  unless you represent the sun, that is
It's a strange thing, but the sun here in WA is stronger than on the east coast, and the Aussie sun is stronger than elsewhere, like Europe or Asia.  My skin is fair, but I could go out in the sun for an hour or so when I was in Italy and not get burnt, but here it's like 10 minutes.  I've gotten burnt wearing a wide-brimmed hat sitting in a chair on the side of a grass sports field, which is completely ridiculous.
Anyway, isn't it your turn to post a selfie?  I have a vague recollection you might have posted one before at some point...?
Great pic.  Nothing broken in your lighting or composition skills!

My apologies. You have fair skin indeed then. I'm about nine hundred meters above sea level, its supprizing how easy it is to get sunburnt out here. See it all the time with working backpackers going for their visa extensions working in the fields.

This is from commuting to work at sunrise and home again in late afternoon, standing in the shade when waiting for buses, and not going anywhere outside in-between.
I'm not sure where I'm meant to be wearing that hat.  My indoor lighting isn't that powerful!!

Easy. Just pick the one that looks most like you playing the lead in an Indy film called Modern Ninja where you are John Normal, a man who achieves invisibility through being unremarkable and where special skills are centred around his ability to talk about local sporting events, a passionate love but mediocre understanding of politics and global affairs, and traditional and slightly close-minded values.

Does This count as a selfie???
I was on a job (real estate photography) and I had climbed to the top of the backyard to photograph the view. Unfortunately, it had rained earlier in the morning and when coming back down I slipped and fell on my keister. My new(ish) Panasonic S1 - which I was holding - fired off a shot at the moment of impact with the ground. I do NOT recommend doing this.

Some underwater macro marvel. Not bad for a little pocket cam. Upload is 1080p, so wandering if it was even filmed in 4K. So here the little Lumix LX10 for some underwater footage. I really like the framing and the cinematography as such. What do you think? @Davide DB 🙂

PannySVHS reacted to QuickHitRecord in 'Upstream Color' - Behind the Scenes
Thanks largely to Andrew's original post, many people here already know that Shane Carruth shot 2013's excellent indie feature Upstream Color with a pair of hacked GH2s. At the time, aspiring filmmakers everywhere found inspiration that such a masterful film was created with such an accessible consumer camera. It still stands up today as a beautiful, challenging, thought-provoking film:
I just happened across some behind the scenes photos on Reddit posted almost a decade after the film's release. I've always wondered about the technical particulars of how this film was made and even though what was posted is pretty low-res and deteriorated further with early Instagram filters, it does show some pretty bare-bones camera rigs and a lot of natural light.
As I enter my forties and the dream of creating a meaningful narrative film in my lifetime seems to slip further and further out of reach, this is just the kind of inspirational kick in the pants that I needed. If 8-bit, 4:2:0 AVCHD from a Micro Four Thirds sensor was enough to create an immersive story like this in 2013, then the never-ending pursuit of marginally improved gear and software really is just a giant, capitalism-fueled distraction -- one that I know that I use to put off the very real possibility that when I buckle down to make something deeply personal, I might not have anything to say. But I also know that it will be my deepest regret if I never even try.
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that my own thoughts and ideas aren't particularly novel or unique, so maybe others on this board will connect with this too.

The Mk II has subject-detection available also in wide-area L AF box, instead of only in the full-frame auto-area AF as in the Mk I. For me limiting the search area for the subject is key to obtaining controlled and reliable results in photographing people. In the newer Zf, the AF box size and shape can be adjusted with many different options and subject-detection is also available there. For me these are the most typical modes I use the cameras in, and the most useful as it gives just the right compromise between user control and automation for me.

I would expect the Z6 III to feature also the same custom area AF as the Zf has (which is ahead of the Z8 and Z9 in the number of box sizes available).

Dual processor, better battery life, 2 card slots (one being CF Express) being the main and probably only real differences.
I looked at the Z6 around the time it came out when I was still using Fuji XT3 but decided the XT4 would be better for me...but then Covid came along and the World changed...and I ended up going for the brand new for then, Lumix S5.
This was before 3 of the 4 lenses listed above existed and had they done so back then, I would almost certainly have made a different choice. I would now if I had 20k to spend but there's reality to deal with!
I'm not criticising Lumix. In many ways it's arguably one of the best all-rounders out there at it's price point (S5ii) but the entire system has not been quite right for me for hybrid or stills work. Video yes, - ticks all the boxes, but not quite for my needs which is hybrid.
The Z6ii is no current 'in it's market champ'...if it ever was, but it's a damned fine stills camera.
Also, because I mentioned 45mp before, why not the Z7ii? It's around +900 euros and do I want 45mp?
Kind of yes, kind of no.
I had S1R's for stills for a year and they were OK to use and the results stellar, but probably overkill for my needs which is event work.
I keep saying to myself that for anything else, more MP would be great, but the reality is I don't do anything else and 24mp really is just a good sweet spot for my line of work.
