It's definitely a super brittle codec/bit rate combo. There is little to no leeway with the files. There is a hack to bump the bitrate to 100 mbps but I have never done that. The good things about the light codec is a 256 microSD card will record for hours and hours.

The LCD is a whopping 320 x 240 rear screen. Not entirely useless, but a good way there.

The thing that's really helpful is it connects to your mobile phone with an app like a gopro would that allows you to monitor remotely, change settings and modes, as well as trigger recording.

@homestar_kevin 60mbps is not really oozing confidence. The 100mbps Pana codec for 8bit 4k is pretty good, emphasize on pretty. Where is the monitor on this tiny toothpick?:) I love the size.

There's definitely a few gotchas on the E1, like using microSD cards and low bitrate. It does have autofocus, but it's really not great. I tend to use it with a wide lens as a plant camera, again mainly for live theater productions where it can be hidden or discretely capturing the band or some other element we can dedicate the camera to capturing.

I typically use it with either the olympus 9-18mm or the panasonic 14mm, often with a sony wide angle adapter on the front to get a wider image out of the 14mm.

The size is awesome, but definitely does carry it's own set of issues, for example the camera is insane looking on a typical sized manfrotto 501 QR plate.

Still a very worthwhile camera to have in the bag and one that can be had pretty cheap. I originally picked mine up for the $200 camera challenge we did on here a few years ago and have been using it on a few gigs a year ever since.

Ah nice, I used B&H specs as the basis for my comment, I can weigh mine when I get home, but it's super tiny and super light.

E shutter only, but pretty great video features and connects and is as controllable with a phone as a gopro is.

Definitely a better camera for video than stills, but has some fun action cam esque features.

It's a really fun camera that truly sits as a 16mp m43 camera is a gopro shell. I've really enjoyed having mine.

A big difference from the rest of the crowd, but the z cam e1 is 252 grams with battery.
I've loved having the e1 in my kit. It's been brilliant for plant/crash cams and for hiding it on stage for theatrical recordings.

I'm definitely tempted by the 12-60 2.8-4 a lot and may end up snagging one if I get a gh6 kit or something. They can be pretty pricey used, but it's a very nice lens.

I wanted to super zoom of the 14-140 to try on my BMPC but have ended up using it on my g9 a bit too.

I'm thinking I'll grab either the 12-140 or the 12-60mm 2.8-4 in time for my next trip, whenever that ends up being.  If I add it to the cost of the trip then maybe the wife won't notice!
They're similar in size, and I'm not sure how much I would miss the extra extension TBH, but a bit of extra low-light might come in handy perhaps.  Although there is a small difference in price...

It's true, the lenses are where MFT really sticks out.

I've gotten one of the Panasonic 14-140's recently to pair with the OG BMPC but it really is a valuable lens on any MFT camera. I got the second version which is a better rated lens. It's also really cheap if you wait and find a good deal.

Apropos of not much really but looking at this in the camera shop today it’s interesting that here in Japan it is marketed as the G9 PRO II but not in the US/EU/UK etc
Maybe there is hope yet for a smaller bodied non ‘PRO’ version.

I have and use the g9mki a decent amount and don't mind the body size as the lenses are still all so small, especially compared to their FF equivalents.
The g9, like most m43 cameras, really got attractive after a few firmware updates and price drops. It's so nice. I still have and love some smaller m43 cameras (gx85, bmpc OG, Z Cam E1) but when I'm doing a video gig I typically will use the g9. It's been wonderful to own and I bought it for $1000 USD new a few years ago.

I'm currently still pretty tempted by the gh6 at $1300, but will probably hold off for a bit to see what they do.

I love what m43s offers and personally don't mind if the top of the line bodies are a a bit chunky. The platform is still wonderful with the lenses they already have out.

I do agree that I hope we see some more compact bodies with the new sensor and now PDAF soon though, but I don't mind the g9ii using the s5ii body.

Decision made, I am getting one.
Why? Because I have spendyitis vulgaris?
Nope. Because it's only the second time in my life I have been inspired by a camera.
The last time was Spring 2011 when the original Fuji X100 was announced.
I drove 200 miles to a trade show in March to see and handle the thing and knew instantly it was right for me so preordered and had one of the first available in the UK.
It arrived the day prior to my first wedding of the season so I took it alongside my pair of Nikon D3S's with big boy zooms.
It was an instant revelation shooting bridal prep right up to the point the battery ran out of juice which coincided with the end of bride prep. Oops.
Viewed the files when I got back and preferred them over the so called 'pro' camera files. There was a certain 'filmic/organic' look to them that has never been replicated by any camera I have ever used.
I bought some more batteries and increasingly used that little guy over my pro cameras before actually shooting a large chunk of the season with just the X100.
With hindsight, that was a little bonkers so as soon as the X Pro-1 was announced for the following year, I preordered a pair plus all 3 launch lenses and dumped the big Nikon stuff.
Again with hindsight, it was probably a bit much/too little but I traded 'image quality' and joy of use for outright capability and range.
    Nothing has come close since.
OK, the X Pro 2 did and so did the XH1 and more recently, the S1H, but none of these have really captured the intangible magic that the original X100 did.
Today, I reckon a X100V might, but I think I have been there and done that now and it would not be another 'X100 moment'.
I am pretty sure the Zf will be. I'm not expecting to get those same 'filmic/organic' files that the original X100 produced. I think that was off it's time, but instead, at the very least, the ethos and joy of using such a set up. But so so much more capable and without the shortcomings (crap battery life, super slow start up time and AF) of the X100.
My education and career was for 5+ years on F2's or 3's, - it's that long ago, I'm not entirely sure so there is some heritage there just as my first proper camera was a Fuji STX2 that my grandparents gave me for my 16th birthday, which fostered a sense of nostalgia when I went fully Fuji in 2012.
I have maybe 7 seasons left in this industry. We'll see about that, but 30 years I think is probably long enough and I think I am heading back to my roots and Nikon to see out those years.
Not 100% committed yet, but I do have a need now to have something relatively lightweight and compact and around 35-50mm for at least 50%+ of my stills work so am going to get a Zf with the 40mm f2 SE lens as a very minimum for that very purpose.
Beyond that, it's in Lumix's hands... They either produce a S2R or S2H within the next few months, or it will be Nikon all the way for me. It might still be Nikon regardless, but I need to give Lumix that chance because it will be a big and relatively costly move.
Or it could even be a Nikon/Lumix mix as my S1H could easily be re-purposed into the mix as my dedicated static longer form video capture tool at which it excels.

I have been using the gx85 for awhile hooked up through an aver media live gamer 2 plus for video and a shotgun mic through a scarlet audio interface. I had the scarlet audio interface and acquired the live gamer during covid. It's a nice set up, but if I were buying today I'd get something like the roland UVC-02 to have both audio and video through one interface.

I'm using the audio technica at-875r for audio and it's way overkill, but sounds great and is tiny.
the gx85 has been way overkill too, but looks great I mainly have the 20mm 1.7 parked on there to get a bit more separation.

homestar_kevin reacted to BTM_Pix in The Canon RF lens range - a problem for Canon?
I wonder what you are more likely to find in most homes, an Ikea Billy bookcase or a Canon EF24-105mm f4?
Its a close call, I reckon.
They shifted so many of them in bundles with the 5DMK2 amongst other cameras because it was absolute bargain as an additional price standalone let alone versus buying a 24-70mm f2.8.
Do they do the same with the RF version ?
Because that would be the way forward to chuck those in with the camera as a bundle with the lens being at 50% of what it would cost extra which is exactly what Panasonic are doing with the S1 with their 24-105mm
As it stands, its the fat part of £1300 for the RF24-105mm which is just not appealing at all.
The Z and L mount both have the same problem to some extent but the third party range is what gives the other two the advantage not to mention E mount which just keeps motoring along with options everywhere.
Of course, there is the massive back catalogue of EF to adapt onto RF but, unlike Nikon with the F mount adapter, this is nothing unique as all the other mounts can do that too.
If I bought an RF camera, I definitely think that it wouldn't see a native RF lens for a very long time and thats probably been enough to keep me away so far as I can do that with everything else but also have affordable native glass too.
As it stands, the most flexible mount is Z mount (primarily due to the unique ability to have F mount with full AF) closely followed by the E mount.
E and L mount currently have the best options in affordable fast native lenses and Nikon are catching up.
The key to that, of course, is the 3rd party support most notably from Sigma.

The MC-N10 remote grip allows operation of the zoom (and a host of other functions) to be controlled off camera too.
Its not cheap but it adds a lot for video shooters, particularly for gimbal use.

A very cool feature I'd missed that came with the 3.0 Z9 FW is this "Hi-Res Zoom" which is basically what I assume is the equivalent to Sony's clear image zoom tech but with oversampled 8K to work with and zoom control can be set to lens control/focus ring. This is really sweet for prime lens shooters like myself, effectively doubling the focal range. Great way to make use of that extra resolution.

You're in a good spot in that F mount glass is so damn cheap at the moment.

I have the z5 and and have been using my F mount glass on it as well as slowly buying Z mount glass over the past year or so.
If I were you I'd poke around and find a Z mount 24-70mm f/4. It's a pretty awesome lens and can be found around $400.
If that's too pricey, but the F mount 24-85mm f/3.4-4.5 VR, it's a very similar lens but can be found for like $200.
The other F mount lens that is always going with my at the moment is the latest nikon 70-300mm AF-P. Super sharp throughout the range and works so well on the Z cameras.
I'd grab or look into those two lenses, though there are truly some other great F mount lenses out there like the 16-35mm f/4, the 70-200mm f/4, and all the telephoto stuff. You can also get a v1 or v2 70-200 2.8 for really cheap too.
Going EF or E mount is another viable option for sure, but I'd probably target the Z 24-70 to start. If you buy it used, you won't really lose any money if you go to sell later and get out of the system and will most likely be able to bundle it with your camera.

A lot of stuff gets lost because people are trying to create titles that incorporate the phrases du jour that they hope will get them up the search rankings.
“Avoid these five scams when using the GH6 for stealth van life with otters” etc
From what I’ve seen, the “GH6 vs xyz” is the richest seam to mine as at least you get comparative stuff against known entities like the P4K etc.

Hey Kye, hope all is well!
This is a great thread and I feel this way a lot. I haven't bought a new camera body in awhile, just been refining the packages for what I have.
I haven't been filming much lately, but don't have any of the latest or greatest.
    Currently own/use:
    Nikon z5, (2) Samsung nx1's, samsung nx500, Panasonic g9, (2) black magic pocket OG's, Panasonic gx85, Nikon d800, Contax g1.
The z5 and G1 have been my primary stills/fun cameras.
nx1's and the nx500 are still my main video package.
Been building up the pocket camera package for a bit.
G9 has been awesome while I've had it.
gx85 is mainly hooked up to my computer as a way overkill webcam.
D800 has been kept because it still delivers the goods and can take advantage or the older/screwmount Nikon Glass I have.
