@homestar_kevin 60mbps is not really oozing confidence. The 100mbps Pana codec for 8bit 4k is pretty good, emphasize on pretty. Where is the monitor on this tiny toothpick?:) I love the size.

It's definitely a super brittle codec/bit rate combo. There is little to no leeway with the files. There is a hack to bump the bitrate to 100 mbps but I have never done that. The good things about the light codec is a 256 microSD card will record for hours and hours.

The LCD is a whopping 320 x 240 rear screen. Not entirely useless, but a good way there.

The thing that's really helpful is it connects to your mobile phone with an app like a gopro would that allows you to monitor remotely, change settings and modes, as well as trigger recording.

I've looked at the E1 before as well, it really is absolutely tiny - almost action camera sized!

    image.thumb.png.a6e97d16bcce1062e602a1c5444e7d56.png

What lenses do you use it with?  I must admin that by the time you add a lens then the size advantage is potentially diluted somewhat.

Does it have AF?  I have a vague sense that there was some 'gotcha' that steered me away from it.  The 4K really is great though.  I definitely agree with @John Matthews about the advantage of 4K on these little cameras, even if the 4K isn't that great in absolute terms the mode tends to have more bitrate and when you put it on a 1080p timeline the compression artefacts on edges etc are often smoothed over in the downsampling.

There's definitely a few gotchas on the E1, like using microSD cards and low bitrate. It does have autofocus, but it's really not great. I tend to use it with a wide lens as a plant camera, again mainly for live theater productions where it can be hidden or discretely capturing the band or some other element we can dedicate the camera to capturing.

I typically use it with either the olympus 9-18mm or the panasonic 14mm, often with a sony wide angle adapter on the front to get a wider image out of the 14mm.

The size is awesome, but definitely does carry it's own set of issues, for example the camera is insane looking on a typical sized manfrotto 501 QR plate.

Still a very worthwhile camera to have in the bag and one that can be had pretty cheap. I originally picked mine up for the $200 camera challenge we did on here a few years ago and have been using it on a few gigs a year ever since.

That looks great! Their website actually lists it at "216.6g" including battery. Did you weigh yours? Does it have a physical shutter?

Ah nice, I used B&H specs as the basis for my comment, I can weigh mine when I get home, but it's super tiny and super light.

E shutter only, but pretty great video features and connects and is as controllable with a phone as a gopro is.

Definitely a better camera for video than stills, but has some fun action cam esque features.

It's a really fun camera that truly sits as a 16mp m43 camera is a gopro shell. I've really enjoyed having mine.

  4. I'm definitely tempted by the 12-60 2.8-4 a lot and may end up snagging one if I get a gh6 kit or something. They can be pretty pricey used, but it's a very nice lens.

I wanted to super zoom of the 14-140 to try on my BMPC but have ended up using it on my g9 a bit too.

  5. It's true, the lenses are where MFT really sticks out.

I've gotten one of the Panasonic 14-140's recently to pair with the OG BMPC but it really is a valuable lens on any MFT camera. I got the second version which is a better rated lens. It's also really cheap if you wait and find a good deal.

  6. I have been using the gx85 for awhile hooked up through an aver media live gamer 2 plus for video and a shotgun mic through a scarlet audio interface. I had the scarlet audio interface and acquired the live gamer during covid. It's a nice set up, but if I were buying today I'd get something like the roland UVC-02 to have both audio and video through one interface.

I'm using the audio technica at-875r for audio and it's way overkill, but sounds great and is tiny.

the gx85 has been way overkill too, but looks great I mainly have the 20mm 1.7 parked on there to get a bit more separation.

  7. This is one area I think Nikon really deserves some credit for their approach with releases the 1.8 S primes first and building out from there. They're all pretty affordable, uniform, and of great quality. Still not a 135mm or 28mm 1.8 primes, but the rest of the line up is filled out.

Panasonic has done the same approach. Canon seems to be on a different orbit entirely.

  8. I really like the 28mm 2.8, the 40mm is just OK, or at least my copy is. The 50mm 1.8 Z is spectacular.

I'll most likely grab a ZF at some point because I've already began investing in the system a few years ago when I grabbed a $999 z5.

I'm pretty excited to pair the ZF with some contax G lenses and may end up buying a few of the smaller sony primes with an adapter too.

  9. I have and use the g9mki a decent amount and don't mind the body size as the lenses are still all so small, especially compared to their FF equivalents.

The g9, like most m43 cameras, really got attractive after a few firmware updates and price drops. It's so nice. I still have and love some smaller m43 cameras (gx85, bmpc OG, Z Cam E1) but when I'm doing a video gig I typically will use the g9. It's been wonderful to own and I bought it for $1000 USD new a few years ago.

I'm currently still pretty tempted by the gh6 at $1300, but will probably hold off for a bit to see what they do.

I love what m43s offers and personally don't mind if the top of the line bodies are a a bit chunky. The platform is still wonderful with the lenses they already have out.

I do agree that I hope we see some more compact bodies with the new sensor and now PDAF soon though, but I don't mind the g9ii using the s5ii body.

  10. You're in a good spot in that F mount glass is so damn cheap at the moment.

I have the z5 and and have been using my F mount glass on it as well as slowly buying Z mount glass over the past year or so.

If I were you I'd poke around and find a Z mount 24-70mm f/4. It's a pretty awesome lens and can be found around $400.

If that's too pricey, but the F mount 24-85mm f/3.4-4.5 VR, it's a very similar lens but can be found for like $200.

The other F mount lens that is always going with my at the moment is the latest nikon 70-300mm AF-P. Super sharp throughout the range and works so well on the Z cameras.

I'd grab or look into those two lenses, though there are truly some other great F mount lenses out there like the 16-35mm f/4, the 70-200mm f/4, and all the telephoto stuff. You can also get a v1 or v2 70-200 2.8 for really cheap too.

Going EF or E mount is another viable option for sure, but I'd probably target the Z 24-70 to start. If you buy it used, you won't really lose any money if you go to sell later and get out of the system and will most likely be able to bundle it with your camera.

  11. Hey Kye, hope all is well!

This is a great thread and I feel this way a lot. I haven't bought a new camera body in awhile, just been refining the packages for what I have.

I haven't been filming much lately, but don't have any of the latest or greatest.

    Currently own/use:

    Nikon z5, (2) Samsung nx1's, samsung nx500, Panasonic g9, (2) black magic pocket OG's, Panasonic gx85, Nikon d800, Contax g1.

The z5 and G1 have been my primary stills/fun cameras.

nx1's and the nx500 are still my main video package.

Been building up the pocket camera package for a bit.

G9 has been awesome while I've had it.

gx85 is mainly hooked up to my computer as a way overkill webcam.

D800 has been kept because it still delivers the goods and can take advantage or the older/screwmount Nikon Glass I have.

  12. I'm so sorry to hear this, Andrew.

Please take all the time you need and be there with your family.

Sending lots of love to you and yours.

My brother passed away 2 years ago now and it's been awful, Take the time you have and be there for Zara as much as possible. I know you will, but truly, use the time you have. Again, so sorry to hear about this.

  13. Someone shared this on dpreview m43's forum, I couldn't resist.

I have m43 to Sony E and Nikon Z adapters, so plan on using these adapted to FF.

Adorama back at it again with some Samyang/Rokinon price craziness, this time in the m43 mount

I thought $230 was low for the 24mm 1.5 last year, now it's at $150!

They have most focal lengths and some kits available.

    The 135mm 2.2 is $140, the 50mm is $130

    The 24mm, 35mm, 85mm kit is $350!

  14. It's been cool to see Konica AR stuff get some love, they have some very nice lenses and some very cool/innovative ones.

I use the Canon FD 35-105mm f/3.5 a lot and really enjoy the range. I'd love to see some footage from that Konica if you have some time at some point

Bingo. You win @homestar_kevin! Congrats to bragging rights.

Heyyy, Bragging rights sound great to me, I'll take em!

The panasonic adapter looks great! I like the sony a lot, it fits perfectly on the 14mm and is still a super small set up once put together (Smaller than the Panasonic 25mm 1.7) The Sony adapter is bigger and heavier than the 14mm, but they make a great combo. The biggest downer is no front filter threads on the sony. I'll dig up some pics with the combo soon, but they're great together and the sony can be had fairly cheap online.

  16. I'm curious too.

I get there just over the 150g weight limit with the panasonic 14mm 2.5 with the Sony VCL-ECU1 on front.

That works out to around 10.5mm but the converter is 125g and lens is 55g, so 170g together. I'm also unsure if the converter knocks it down to below f/2.8, but I like using the combo.
