The other - more significant in my eyes at least - drawback is post editing. You have to use Sigma software and you can see the problem at the 10 minute mark of this video.

This is not true any more. The Sigma DP1, DP2 DP3, SD and SD H Qattro all shoot native DNGs which of course is editable in any raw editor you can think of.

The original DP1 and DP2 is also Lightroom compatible without shooting DNGs.

Another myth is that one must use a tripod. Obviously you don't need a tripod anymore than you do on a film camera. I've never used one, not once, with a Foveon.

Personally I have loved all my Sigma Foveon cameras and I'm in the process of buying the SD Quattro H to see how I like it compared to the regular Quattro.

Oh and while on the subject... Does Adobe Premiere edit ADOBE Cinema DNG yet? Or was that a bit beyond those geniuses as well?

They did a couple of years ago before I switched to FCPX. Guess they removed it again..

I agree with all of what you said :)  It was the grading workflow that was the nail in the coffin for me: I was spending way too much time getting the image to a point where it was acceptable.  I admit I have a lot to learn about grading log footage, but for what I do it was totally bonkers spending that amount of time on it.  Akin to linus tech tips shooting with RED, what a whole load of faff, for a tech a blog, they'd get better results quicker with an an a7.  THe z6 is sooooo much quicker, I have a few presets I can dump on the footage for different setups, and usually I just have to tweak the curves a bit, then onto the next.  However, I just shot a local tv ad on the z6, and I was missing the GH5: no log, no 10bit, no stupidly high bitrate, no advanced monitoring :)  Mostly that stuff is a safety net, but just knowing that the gear you use is designed more for that style of shooting, and having those more advanced options available makes you feel more in control.  It's not great working a job and feeling like your kit isn't quite up to the task (even if that is just in your head!).

Huge reason I like using the EOS-R for pro shooting. I've set a PP in camera and don't grade at all, just exposure adjustments. Looks fantastic.

It's very close to my workflow with stills which is also very minimal.

Sony and Canon want you to hold their beer.

I wouldn't consider 400mbit to be low bitrate.

I'm just hoping they will skip h.265 for as long as it's possible.

Yes, but will it be as capable a video camera as the fp is apparently projected to be.

I wonder also about the quoted dr; At 12.5 stops in 2019... which is now a 14 plus stop world, is there room to improve this, or is it a limitation of the hardware?

Yeah but will it be able to do video? Maybe not. Might be too much data to handle it.

No idea. I've had Sigma Foveon cameras both with and without video. Personally I hope they leave video out of it like they have on the Quattro.

Foveon has amazing film qualities and colour, but they really need to sort the low light out before I use a Foveon camera as my main one.

Honestly, they can lock them in at iso100 for all I care. Been dreaming a long time for a base iso 50 or even 25 in a camera.

The ISO 6 looks tasty even though I suspect it's a pull from 100.

  7. Finally had time to read the article and luckily I don't have to pre-order anything until 2020 as I had planned.

"This is NOT the Foveon camera that will come in 2020…this is a “regular” 24MP Bayer sensor L-mount camera scheduled to be released in autumn!"

Big pass on the FP for me but it will be interesting to follow.

why do we owe it to them to dumb down our love of images?

We don't. The point is that you can't dictate what "dumbing down" means. It's subjective. There are no end all feature that means nicer image according to everyones taste and workflow.

I choose the best tool with the best specs in order to get the best possible results. In no way am I dumbing down anything. It just happens to be that tool is recording HD.

What about the Retina display YT laptop audience?

Try using a MacBook Pro for a month and then switch to a 1080p PC laptop.

    Difference is enormous.

I'd say 4K matters more at these kind of close viewing distances than it does in the cinema.

Just as reference here are the stats from the last 28 days on my entire channel.
    Smartphone 40%
    Computer 39%
    Tablet 12%
    TV 7,9%
    Gaming console 0,8%

I would be completely shocked if even 5% of the computer users watched the 4K uploads in 4K.

Gear doesn't matter because you were basically using two cameras, lol.

Counting up all the blind tests and shootout videos I've made we must be talking at least 50 cameras, probably closer to 100.

The results are always the same. It doesn't matter..

Surprising results indeed. I didn't intend to pick a certain number of cameras, just pick which image I liked. I picked 3-4 from each scene and all turned out to be the EOS R!

Here I been researching cameras left and right and turned every stone and been looking at everything except Canon because everyone hates them, haha, and in a blind test I preferred Canon. And the ones I've researched the most BMPCC/BMMCC I disliked the most O_o

Perhaps I should just stay with Canon and upgrade from my 1000D since I like the colors, ergonomics and feel at home with the menues, etc. Magic lantern seems kind of difficult if you're non-techie person like myself, so maybe skip the M/70D decision all together and go for the R/RP ?

If you can get hold of an R to try it out it could very well be worth the time. Personally I enjoy it. I don't own it but when buying new gear for my employer it was an easy choice.

Diving deep into The Matrix now, I know...

There are always "ifs" and "buts" to tests. And conclusions are about as subjective as color :)

  11. I would definitely had preferred the 400mbit Canon way or Panasonics lovely 200mbit HD.

I will pre-order the FF Sigma Foveon as soon as it's announced. And then a used S1 could make sense as a b-cam.

Or I will get another SD Quattro and snag some SD lenses which should drop when the system is more or less dead. They can be used on Sony as well so they aren't too bad to hold on to.

The Last mount might actually turn them into the most affordable lenses around for Sony.

Me neither. Until to have read it reported here:

    https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=93737#p521893

I was expecting any solid contradictory there from BMD staff included, no one dropped a word on topic to oppose it anyway...

That link only made me more certain that it's a made up problem. Don't you have a link to anything showing that it is a "well known" or at least "known" issue with cDNG in the BMCC and original BMPCC?

That thread is about Braw so it's not a good example, since none of the cameras shoot it. Also if it's well known there should be plenty of threads and videos.

You don't realise the guy called Mattias Burling ran the Mattias Burling YouTube Channel? :)

    I love stuff like this.

For me it's B and E that stand out. Was the light different though? It seems on some of the lake shots the sun is behind a cloud.

Is the colour difference between A and H on the lake shot really so different, especially on the boat? They are miles apart, one is almost black and white!!

The sun kept going in and out of the cloud which affected the strength of the ND, which can really mess up colors in my experience. Not to mention IR.

  14. This is a blind test comparing videos from a couple of different cameras, lenses and filters.
I have not tried to match the images since that would take away the point of the test. Im looking at quick turnaround, color science as well as the effect different types of lenses and filters have on the final image.

As you can see the light changed quite a bit between shots but it doesn't matter.
