No one knows what's going to happen with Olympus, but I'd just like to give context that makes sense to me.
Many other companies are also in trouble for three major reasons: Phones provide "good enough" quality for most people with easy sharing abilities since most people don't print anymore Most people don't want to carry an extra device for making photos or videos Although cameras keep getting better, the human eye is not; hence, there are so many awesome options out there for great quality, even on the ever-growing used market (crazy deals!). You can talk all you want about megapixels, 8k/12k RAW, etc. but this fact remains.
Olympus Imaging accounts for only 5.5% of the total company's business, contrary to other companies like Nikon, Sigma, Leica, Hasselblad and Blackmagic who are seemingly much more imaging-centric companies.
Olympus has about 40,000 employees and a fraction of them are involved with imaging. Here are some other companies for context:
    Canon (200,000), Fujifilm (32,000), Nikon (25,000), Sony (114,000), Blackmagic (600), Sigma (1,135), Panasonic (273,000), Ricoh (98,000), Leica Camera (1,800), Hasselblad, part of DJI (660).
Many of these companies are dealing with significant losses in profits due to the current trends and economic situation. All of the companies are dealing with year-over-year market shrinkage to the tune of greater than 50%. That’s huge.
Of the companies above, only the ones that adapt to the market trends will be around in 10 years or they’ll have to foot the bill in terms of losses in imaging (not likely?).
I would say Olympus management inspires confidence in that they’re being proactive. They will be selling their imaging business (highly likely) and JIP will have to either adapt it to make it profitable, shut it down or sell it again.
    My guess is the following:
JIP will take it over, hire consultants and market analysts to identify a profitable future and in what markets they can compete. This will mean they’ll cut a lot of jobs (not necessarily a bad business thing if you’re trying to adapt). The end result will be a much more efficient company with a brand-new, modern factory in a low-cost country (Vietnam, not China-bonus). That is not such a bad position. They'll either sell it back to Olympus or Olympus imaging will become its own company. This will be the best scenario in my mind. The worst scenario is that they cannot make it profitable and they’ll try to sell or shut it down. In all cases, we still have fantastic Olympus gear with an amazing selection of lenses. I don't think they're going to strip the company of its patents and sell the Olympus name to the highest bidder- it's simply not going to happen. The Japanese are too proud to let that happen to a household name like Olympus (who's not even that invested in the imaging business).
Given current market trends, I have doubts about a brighter future than Olympus imaging for some of the companies above. The catchy headlines of “Olympus has fallen” are not the entire truth, but time will tell.

My 72 year old dad carries a point and shoot small Samsung on his vacations, used to shoot Pentax 35mm and super 8, he does not recognise or see value in better image quality. I think the same goes for average Joe and Jane. They're already saturated with images through social media, and have no more appetite.

Further more I think companies are not listening enough to end users' needs and desires. Often I think it's sheer unwillingness or laziness, as annoyances appear to be just a software setting away.
Sometimes I think consumers are just an afterthought, and the real money is made else where like in medical or surveillance or military tech.

Regarding to Olympus: the best end (with 0% chance of happening) would be Sony buying Olympus.

They could pull a Panasonic and drop the APS-C line (which never got so much love from Sony after their FF move - the A6xxx is almost the same since 2014). They could port to Olympus their AF tech, better codecs, and finally release a newer m43 sensor with all bells and whistles
(BSI, stacked, all the tech), like a 24mp unit with Fuji low light performance. An OM-D with good low light, good AF, 4k60p, 10 bit output, with Olympus colors and ergonomics, anyone?

And Sony could use Olympus knowledge to improve their IBIS and color science, Zuiko expertise in great compact lenses and optics. Or maybe a FF OM-D with E-mount.

But will not happen. In fact, Sony looks somewhat quiet in these days...

Very sad news this, I have fond memories of my long gone E-M10ii. A dream camera would have been the GH5S sensor in a E-M1iii body with IBIS, 10bit internal, 4K 60p and the PDAF of Olympus.

Panasonic could see the writing on the wall with Olympus. They knew they couldn't sustain MFT by themselves and have transitioned to FF.

Have only owned a limited number of cameras but the GH5 has been my favorite body. That isn't saying much considering I've mostly owned smaller cameras other wise (Fuji, APSC Sony, older Panasonic's)
The XT3 is about as small of a body as I can take. I really dislike the XT30 body. Its just way too small. Its nice as a travel camera though as it can more easily fit in a pocket.

I prefer tilt screens to flip screens. Screens that are built into the body are unacceptable and pretty useless IMHO(looking at you Blackmagic and Canon). Black magic definitely has the nicest menu's but they don't have to include any photo oriented settings which makes it way easier. I feel like it would be better if hybrid cameras had a completely different menu for the photo and video modes, rather than just having things greyed out.

I am not American, and I think Trump says the strangest things. But, he is arguably the most successful US president of all time. I may not be a Trump fan, but I prefer him over both the Clintons, Obama and many others. Obama getting the Nobel for farting in his dreams was way more shady than anything else. EVER.
The US has been heading for a financial collapse for the last few years (since the Dollar Store and Wallmark rise). Now China is literally taking away millions of US jobs and Fortune 500 is inundated with Chinese Companies. Apple would have been relegated to 4th or 5th position in smartphone sales, if the US wasnt doing all the shady stuff it is (to be fair, US Trade and IP Laws have been anything but fair since they were created). Also TikTok and other chinese tech startups are going to be displacing Twitter and Facebook (even though it doesn't do similar things to either) very soon. That's why Google is planning a TikTok ban soon (if it hadn't already).
Europe and the US are heading for both economic and cultural collapse. The only question, I guess, is how quickly.

Right? I can’t wait for GH6 or a EM1.3. I just got a Weebil S gimbal. It’s great but after using it for about 30 mins I was like I can’t wait until I don’t have to use something like this. Just so much faster to translate the movements you want with your arms and hands and a good ninja walk.
Im also thinking about picking up a EM5.3 for photo and for occasional video. So many people knock it and then say after using it it makes photography fun again.

Honestly, I am stoked on this. If I somehow get my hands on some extra cash I would love to pick up a used E-M1 mkii or one of these E-M5 mkiii.
I shoot mostly on a GH5 and having one of these as my second cam would be killer. Good AF for the times I need it and the Gh5 for when I need 10bit / 4k60.
Olympus is doing good stuff. Plus M43 is a killer mount and I love the sensor size.

Biggest news of the day: they added a headphone jack AND it's in an even better spot than on the GH5. Lower down the body means more rotation for the screen when headphones are in.

I'm having difficulty finding adapters for the L mount. Any suggestions. I'm hoping to mount FD lenses, Rokinon cinema lenses, and Nikon Fs.
Never owned an L mount before. Andrew, you're the king of adapting lenses---any helpful information? Will this camera also accept M mount?

Yes I think perhaps that's true about the GH6 but they have been pretty generous considering 95% of the market for the S1 is stills!
What they need to watch out for a bit is Sony and Nikon because they are doing all sorts... Z6 does autofocus well, S1 doesn't. Sony do autofocus well on a wide range of models, starting cheap (if unimaginative). Nikon will be first with full frame RAW and I had expected Panasonic to do that. So Panasonic better do a proper video S model along with a GH6, just doing a GH6 might not be enough.
They also need to embrace Phase Detect AF sensors.

Until half your shots are out of focus. I think Panasonic dropped the ball on these cameras. Great AF has to be part of the equation for any new camera... for both stills and video.
