A7rii... No thanks, had both the a7sii and a6300. Had to return one and sell the other. Their codecs aren't up to standards in 2016. And that's just one of the many problems they have imo.

Lens flare in these adapters is the biggest problem, especially as you go wide.  I'd look for that first.  There are some DIY solutions to dealing with it out there.

i´ve send a mail to BM and asked whether its only uhd monitoring or 4k downscale recording too, that was the answer:
    Hi Christoph,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

The information that is available about the video Assist at the moment indicates that it will only offer UHD monitoring, not recording.

this may change between now and when the product gets released, however information is limited about this at the moment.

    Many thanks.

This is a recent short that I did. My wife and I were originally making it to use as a sort of announcement that we were having a baby (only our immediate family knew about it) but I also wanted it to stand alone as a fun little short. After shooting the bulk of the footage my wife went into labor the next day so we had to do all of the quick zoom/close-up shots weeks after. Better late than never!

Since I was unfortunately in the video, I had to rely on my wife for shooting most of it and when we couldn't operate the camera ourselves, we called over my Dad and a friend in the middle of the night to help us shoot. All three of them had absolutely zero experience shooting anything and as a testament to the NX1, they all learned the basics of the camera reasonably quickly.

i had a shoot with the original 2.5k bmcc, great cinematic image.. love it... if i had the money i would buy the mini in a second...
But remember the real cost for the ursa mini upgrade:
    5k for the body
minimum 1k for fast cf cards if you dont allready own them
    100$ V mount plate
    500$ Batteries
    1.5k shoulderkit
so youre in total around 8k... for a nebie thats an overkill

Do you feel limited with your gh4? and if yes what is the limit.

sqm reacted to Axel in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera: does it make sense to buy it now?
First of all, let's see what happens with the excellent Twixtor slomos if you have motion blur (influenced by exposure time, the longer, the more blur) in the image, here. You can only slow down to exactly the degree matching the motion blur of a high speed recording with that frame rate, no more. Let's do the maths. A 180° shutter with the Pocket is a perfectly proportional motion blur. 11,25° means 25% motion blur. So you can speed up 4 times (400% duration, 25% speed). If you take 30 fps for 24 fps, you add another 20% (of 400), that means 480% are theoretically possible, equalling ~120 fps.
Note, that Twixtor interpolates motion phases as well as appropriate motion blur (and it does so with very little ghosting, like AAE or other apps, left to their own devices). So to be on the safe side, you must not allow any motion blur in the recording. Like with HFR-slomos, this means shorter exposure times. For example, for 11,25° you need sixteen times as much light to expose correctly.
The second fact is, that there are movements so fast that you simply can't stop motion blur (at least not with the Pocket, you'd need the equivalent of 1/2000, better 1/5000 shutter), i.e. the dog's ears at 17" here. If there is motion blur (any kind of blur), Twixtor will screw it. Water, on the other hand, is a lesser problem, see 21" in the same clip.
Last thought on the subject: you do slomos for a reason, or you don't do them at all. If you know in advance that you need to accentuate a certain gesture with slow motion, you plan that in advance. Film is all about manipulating time, not about real time. So you need Twixtor. Because, even if you do all your shots in 60p, just in case you want to time-remap them later, you need to do it in too small a shutter to allow natural motion blur for 24p. You have to post-process these to add blur. EOSHD member Brandon Li (b.k.a. Rungunshoot) wrote a tutorial about that.

if you dont mind the lack of slowmo and and no global shutter, wait a bit and get it, love the BM image.

Who is launching this on kickstarter first?
a small hand grip with back LCD that goes INSTEAD of the LPE6 on the camera back and screw in the bottom mount. And you now put the LPE6 inside the grip.
just imagine a perfect pocket camera, you remove the grip/lcd when used on drone or helmet.
If I had resources I would launch that right away, can't belive black magic did not think about it.

Having used both now, for a while, I have to say it came down to two thing for my preferred shooter. And that is reliability, and that damned 30 minute limit.

A lot of paid gigs I take on are live events, where I often need a longer recording time for speeches, theatre, music sets, etc. and the Nx1 just doesn't cut it for that.  Add to that I have already gone through 2 NX1 bodies for two separate hardware issues, and I can't really speak highly of it's reliability in the field. My Gh4, on the other hand, will run until I'm out of card space, and I have never had to worry about it crapping out.
The iq on the NX1 is spectacular. For photography, personal projects, and short film work I love my NX1. For actual paying client videography? I go Gh4.

If some one is able to "hack" that limit on the NX1, similar to what was done with Magic Lantern on the canons, I'll be stupid happy.

@sqm that's one of my favourite things about the GH4, to be honest. The clean HDMI out and 4K downscale allows me to capture in-camera 4K as well as external 1080p 4:2:2 and both of them make excellent footage. I can use the 1080p immediately and if I really want to take the time to transcode the 4K later (for, e.g. better final quality or some fiddly tweak or what-have-you) it's still there. Or if I want to do a 1:1 punch-in or something.
The reported lack of HDMI features on the NX1 is one of the main reasons I'm not even considering that camera for anything serious right now. The GH4's workflow just beats the pants off anything else, for me, at least, and it's image is just fine as far as I'm concerned, although more/better/etc. is always a tradeoff between cost, weight, size, rigging requirements, extra shit necessary, etc. etc. etc.
Edit: Just saw your Q about transcoding before editing. No, I never need to transcode the H.264 4K I just drop it into a timeline in FCPX and start working (a 1080p timeline or a 4K one or anything, doesn't matter). The transcoding happens behind the scenes if I want to render, otherwise it just happens on export, same as anything else.

Shot with Samsung NX1, 30/2, 45/1.8 and 50-200/4-5.6. A shoulder rig was used for most of the shots, especially handy when using the 50-200 @ 200. I used Gorilla Grain 4k for the first time but not I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with the settings i used. More testing is needed. Edited, stabilized and graded in Premiere.

    http://eddavid.tumblr.com/post/113334610539/the-response-i-was-wanting-for-the-quiet-escape
After a week I finally got the response I really wanted for my short film, "the Quiet Escape" that you can only get from posting something online and having the anonymous bathroom wall writing comment on it:
"I don't mean to be rude because a lot of the shots were decent but hearing you call NYC a shithole made me disinterested .... just felt like a lot of whining. And its not magic most 20 something living in Williamsburg can afford rent they have there parents paying the bills so don't cry for them to hard. I mean why is this even a on here? What did we learn? sorry but Phillip Bloom teaches more in a simple instagram post. We can do better..... Good luck in the country buddy I was born and raised in Manhattan and it usually spits out most transplants eventually so don't feel bad"
This is a good thing.  Comments that are positive are nice, but you need the bad - to feed off of.  That’s probably one of the greatest strengths of NYC.
This comment is the underlying air that exists in New York City that you have confront after living in NYC for a certain period of time.  This feeling that you are never legit, you are never part of it, that you are always an outsider and that people want you to leave.  That you never really fit in, that you're not a true New Yorker and you'll never be one because person X has lived there longer than you.
I dealt with this a lot on a website called Diehipster.com - it was a anti-gentrification website that featured fantasy scenarios where the blogger, Diehipster, would post videos of people who looked like hipsters getting beaten and stomped on, and also a sectio n where he would write a fantasy story of beating or maiming a hipster in a variety of cartoony ways. He was big when the hipster thing started becoming a thing around 2003-2005, or at least his hit counter clocked in at a million views.  He kept the blog going for years, but I think now it's over - maybe he moved on.
The undercurrent in NYC is grumpy and negative, like your grandpa when he's off his meds.  Maybe it comes from the rents raising and the food prices raising and the amount of people living there increasing - a feeling of loss, of being hurt by forces around you.  It makes people grumpy and have that "New York TUDE" that is celebrated in many of films about NYC.
And it’s there and it’s something to celebrate.  So much art comes out of “difficult” situations.  No one made much of anything during the PAX Romana.  Right?  I don’t remember.  I was sleeping in class that day.
Is the "Quiet Escape" really taking a "dump" on NYC?  No it's not, well yes kind of -  but it's not that simple.  It's a study of the city - yes - and it's showing the flaws of the city - but that doesn't mean I don't still love it and love everyone in it, even the grumpy diehipsters.  I love them especially because like me, they are trying to figure it all out.
