Last comment, I’m not mad I just want to make a point:
Criticizing fellow creatives is rude, no matter what. I don’t care what you do for a living, it puts food on your table and provides for you and those you care about.

Weddings? Great, pay them bills. It’s better than most 9 to 5s and requires a lot of skill.
YouTube shill? Fine, pay them bills. It’s on us, the consumer, to do our own research and make the right buying decisions.

What I don’t like is when someone mocks someone else for the work they do. It shows a lack of big picture awareness. Especially in 2020 man, everyone is scrambling.

    I think so.
This post (https://www.liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php?threads/lab-processes-before-the-digital-intermediate.12923/#post-129058) from Marc Wielage describes a workflow that doesn't seem to include a conversion:
Assuming I am interpreting correctly, Marc may well use a conversion to get the files into a log format and then goes manual from there.  HLG is a log format but has a pretty extreme curve so that might not be the best curve to start with.
Having said that though, here's some tests.
GH5 HLG image with no processing:

GH5 HLG image with CST (rec2020/rec2100 HLG to rec709):

GH5 HLG image with contrast, saturation, and a slight hue rotation of all colours to get skin tones in range:

Are they the same?  No.  Is the manual one nicer?  Not really  But you can't deny that it's pretty similar to the CST.  They're just different.
As a more general comment, this test took be about 10 minutes and that included finding some music to put on and finding the project with these test shots in them.  Before you make a statement or ask a question, ask yourself if it's about something you can actually test yourself, and if you can, try it out and see what actually happens.  Grading is so easy like this because you don't need to actually go shoot anything, you just fire up Resolve / FCPX / PP and click a few buttons and see what happens

I read the section on color management in the resolve manual last night, and it seemed to be that CSTs are the preferred method over luts for this kind of thing. The reasoning being that CSTs are non-destructive so you can still get any data thats out of bounds (provided it wasn't clipped in the original footage).
At least that was my understanding.
Color is incredibly complcated, and I can't say I understand it well.
I'll see how I go with the approach I outlined above, and report back.

If you get a chance, try the workflow I outlined in the previous post. It's actually really easy, and so far seems to be working well.
As for shooting, I have found that it's really important to have zebras turned on, and also glance at the histogram from time to time to get the exposure right. You can't really trust what you see on the monitor in HLG.
I basically made sure I was ETTR just under the point where zebras would show up. Doing that makes the clips "look" over-exposed, but all that data is there and when you set the color space, shifts back to a normal exposure.

I should probably write this on a blog,. but since I don’t have one (yet),  I thought I would try to document my recent experience putting a video together.  Hopefully it might provide some usefulness to other beginners getting started.

This is the first project I’ve done which I feel came out -roughly- how I imagined it. Although there are still a LOT of problems with the footage and end result is far from perfect! It was a great learning experience, and I was able to experiment with a lot of techniques.

Type of video: Dance / Music Video
    ->

    Technical Details:
    Camera:  Sony A7RII
    Lenses: 16-35 f4, 28mm f2, 55mm f1.8
Lighting: Street lights, and Yongnuo YN360 Light Wand RGB for fill on some shots.
    Location: Osaka, Japan.
    Editing and Post: Davinci Resolve
    Budget: $0

    Main Challenges:
Biggest challenge was probably finding locations with enough available light. I didn’t really have the budget or space to set up lighting, and we were shooting in the middle of the night in the middle of winter.  I had a lot of trouble getting shots to stay in focus, largely due to my own inexperience.

     Things I learned:
An external monitor for checking focus is essential. I bought one straight after this project once I realized how many shots were out of focus.  The autofocus on the A7RII is too unreliable with a subject moving like this. I should have just stuck to manual focus.  Doing everything solo is really hard. I would have loved to have an assistant, especially for help with  lighting.  I need to learn a lot more about visual effects in post. I mostly just messed with layered footages and blend modes for this.. But I wish I had the knowledge to do more interesting effects.  Using different shutter speeds / angles can be very interesting. I experimented a lot with both high shutter speeds to add stress and tension in some shots, and also with slow shutter speeds to add extreme motion blurring for specific shots to match the music. Getting the right shutter speed for the effect I wanted was tough though. Going too slow became a mess, but if it wasn’t slow enough the effect was too subtle.  Planning is important. But so is having the flexibility to scrap a plan when see something and go with it on the spot.  Color grading is hard and confusing. I need a lot more practice.  Getting good exposure / dynamic range is way more challenging in video (I’m more familiar with photography). I ended up with a lot of blown highlights and crushed blacks. I would love some tips on how I can increase dynamic range or avoid under/overexposing.  I’m still really unsure what settings I should be using on the A7RII. Especially for color accuracy and dynamic range.

That’s about all I can think of. Questions are welcome. As is any feedback or advice anyone has. I know it’s far from professional work, but I had a lot of fun on this project and am looking forward to improving my skills in the future.

Yes, it is big enough if you are close enough to be operating (ie not 10 feet away). I downscaled from 7 to 5 because the 7 was so unwieldy on a dslr rig. Much happier now.

John's post are perfectly reasonable, Blackmagic dont want comparisons against other cameras, they want to provide enjoyable images and emotions with the camera.
Have you see the parachute footage from Eos R? It's all about smiling people enjoying the moment in the sunset. You want to capture the feeling, and we can provide you a tool for that, this is the message. Not low light noise comparisons.

So we're now publicly shaming people and companies because the host of one of our favorite internet forums didn't get invited to a camera test event that he had no natural entitlement to be at (besides it being a good publicity opportunity for BMD)?
While I can understand the disappointment of Andrew, I think the behavior displayed here will probably reduce future chances regarding any brands' involvements even more. Not exactly professional at all. Why is this forum always so god damn hostile?!
I can't judge if John Brawley is a nice person or not because I don't know him, but I found it rather surprising he was even willing to fight it out with some of us arm chair experts. People here compare his behavior to how Roger Deakins behaves on his forum. Well, I have never seen the people on Deakins' forum question what he says all the time so I think it is not too surprising that eventually there might be rash answers.
I find this really disappointing all in all. This is a forum I really enjoy(ed) to read a lot but the tone is often so negative, aggressive and absolute. I already took some time off the forum a while ago and now I often starting writing posts/replies but then stop and decide not to post at all because the internet tough guy behavior here.

I haven't posted here in years, since Andrew Reid publicly berated me for disagreeing with him and belittled my work because I didn't shoot with "a proper camera like a RED or Arri, or even an A7S II ". I'm a nobody, just a cameraman / editor like most of you. A friend told me about this latest rant and I had to dig out my login to say I think this is hilarious. ?
I've never seen someone throw their toys out the pram so fast. The sense of entitlement here is staggering. Just because you own a somewhat popular camera site doesn't entitle you to anything. I'm sure the 350,000 viewers of this thread (as you keep reminding us) can make up their own mind on whether to purchase a camera. What's especially amusing is that John Brawley doesn't even work for Black Magic and publicly attacking him serves no purpose.
Publicly attacking prominent figures - decrying the press - At this point Andrew Reid / EOSHD is the 'Donald Trump' of camera sites. ☺️

Long time lurker; first time poster. Been reading your posts on your site for a long time now. Think I bought a LUT and Canon guide a while back. Have since been a BM URSA Mini 4K user and I've been looking forward to this new camera.
Reading your new blog post is confusing. At first I was like "Who's John Brawley?" Is he the head of BM or something, and that's why you don't want this camera? Turns out that no, he's not. He's just an independent DP. Okay. Does BM know or are they supposed to know that you're from Manchester? I'm not exactly seeing what BM is doing to you that you're protesting them and using your influence as a respected camera blogger to get that word out.
I'm not trying to be insulting. Maybe I'm missing something. But if this is what it looks like, say it isn't so Andrew.
