Kubrickian reacted to nathanleebush in Lars von Trier returns to Cannes and people seem to have taken personal offence to his fictional serial killer
The left have become a bunch of whiny, pearl-clutching Victorians. They've gone completely off the deep end with the offense culture and all the divisive race-baiting and reverse sexism/racism. Hillary was the last time I vote with them. Glad we still have a few brave people like Kanye and von Trier who truly don't give a fuck, but they are few and far between.

Kubrickian got a reaction from kaylee in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
This is clearly the camera that will let me self-actualize as a viable artist. I couldn't do it up until now, but with these specs, the sky's the limit. I just told my agent to hold all meetings until September.

Kubrickian reacted to Matthew Hartman in Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
54 pages on this freaking camera. (Or any) Why is this particular camera so controversial here? I feel bad for the people that actually bought and like this camera, I'm sure they came to this thread to enjoy talking about it with others that like it too. I wonder if Andrew can close this one and start a new one for those that actually care about it? For those that don't, simply disregard it, it's really not that hard.
I have to say, it's been a long time for me where I've seen people so vehemently debate each other's opinion and preference, as if that were even debatable. It felt like I was reading an Android vs iOS or Windows vs. OSX comment section.
I'm officially checking out of this one fellas. Seen you on the flip side of the moon.

Kubrickian reacted to Attila Bakos in Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
I use a Blackmagic Video Assist 4K with the X-T2, and I have to start recording on both the camera and the recorder. If I don't press record on the camera, it sends out a worse quality signal. This step is easy to forget, I'm not sure if they fixed this on the X-H1. Also, when recording for a longer period, you will have thermal noise in your F-Log footage. It was not visible with the built in film simulations, only with F-Log. It basicly looks like a lot of hot pixels, but it's only visible in dark shots. Since the X-H1 manages heat better, I believe you won't have this issue there. The biggest problem with X-T2 is that F-Log is kinda broken, the red channel is very problematic, it breaks very easily, which rendered some my footage almost unusable. I tested F-Log coming from the X-H1 and it is WAY cleaner. This is something noone seems to talk about, I had to find this out myself. Oh and if you use film-simulations, the in-camera recordings will be full range, but when you send it over HDMI, it will be video range, so you'll have slightly less precision, if that matters to you. I can't really recommend an external recorder for the X-T2, but a smaller monitor like the SmallHD Focus can be very useful.

Kubrickian reacted to Mattias Burling in How stills killed casual video for me
This is just a little something I shot on the subway, absolutely nothing special. But it made me think.
I used to shoot a lot of casual video on the streets. But ever since I became passionate about stills, more specifically street photography I never do it. Mostly because when recording video I feel like Im just missing out on great stills. An this was no exception. In fact its 1.5 years since I shot casual video out and about if we don't count "test shots" around the house.
The irony is that I started shooting street photography to become a better videographer. I used to love shooting video. The best part for me was composition and grading. So I started taking Raw stills in order to get to practice bigger quantities of grading. The plan was to eventually make a video about it and recommend all aspiring videographers to shoot a lot of stills. Just like the DP's in the Zacuto shoot out says (forgot which).
But along the way it completely switched on me. I started liking stills more. Specially the challenge. To capture a whole scene, the entire atmosphere, all the feelings in one single frame. Compressing an entire story into one single moment. Im not in anyway implying that Im good at it. But I love trying.
Now when I watch vlogging street shooters on youtube, you know the type, Gopro in the hot shoe and a montage to hip-hop beats, I just get annoyed. In the video montages they miss out on so many great images. Same thing for me today. In this short video montage of nothingness I see at least 4 potentially great images.
So, thats it. I still recommend all here that are aspiring DP's to shoot more stills. With something like a GRii you can always have it ready. Look for light, composition and story. Just be aware that you might switch to the dark side like I have.
Don’t underestimate its power.
What about you guys? Who shoots stills, why, why not?
(btw, really soft lens in action here. It looked awesome with gorilla grain on my computer but I removed it since youtube always messes it up imo. And therefor its pretty darn soft. A couple of focus misses doesn't help either.)

Kubrickian reacted to Attila Bakos in Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
I wish they added 4K60, but yeah, probably not gonna happen. I also wish for 10bit, internally or externally. I'm shooting F-Log with the X-T2 and with 8bit it leaves some to be desired. And I'm not sure if it's just my X-T2 or a general issue, but the camera gets hot relatively fast when you use HDMI out. And thermal noise appears after a few minutes at ISO 6400 and above, which you won't see when you only record internally. Oh and it would be great to have waveforms or rgb parade in video mode. And adjustable zebras.

Kubrickian reacted to kinoseed in PhotoMatch: Automatic Image Color Grading
PhotoMatch is an app, which can auto-create LUT by a given image,
and in development right now is an image-adjustments module, with custom algorithms.
I'm looking for some feedback from you.
Do you like the image-adjustment algorithms better than the standard ones, used in just about any other software?
What do you think about the color-matching option?
You can run the app through just about any modern browser: https://kinoseed.com/
Here are some examples of what it does:
Here's example of "temperature change" algorithm:

Kubrickian reacted to Attila Bakos in The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here
You can enable the highlight warning separately in the display custom settings, then it works in video mode too. But unfortunately you are correct about the RGB histogram, there is no way to show that in video mode.
I few weeks ago made a video about F-Log, you might find it helpful:
As you can see you can live without F-Log, and it's not without problems. I guess you would run into even more problems if it was recorded in-camera with 100Mbps H.264.

Kubrickian got a reaction from Ed_David in iphone X for video - GO PRO killer? H.265 recording - slo mo 1080p up to 240 FPS - is this a go pro killer?
I was on a construction site shoot this weekend where a perfect shot materialized suddenly after we had just packed up the camera for the day. I pulled out my iPhone 6s and recorded it in 4k 100mpbs with Filmic Pro. Add a little simulated motion blur in after effects and you are golden. I've cut in filmic pro iphone footage to videos before and no one has ever noticed. Great iPhone gimbals are $130 now. These kinds of situations are where I see a phone being useful for filmmaking.

Kubrickian reacted to BenEricson in Buying Canon XC10 in 2017.
XC10 is great, you just really need to test the limits of the camera. Obviously tricks like ETTR help a ton. C-LOG is clean and looked really good to me. I don't own the camera anymore but want to buy one again. It is just a really really fun camera to shoot with. Liberating coming from a very large camera. I would be curious what the new Wide DR profile looks like.
Positives:
Really light weight, Very small/compact and discrete, High bit rate 4k images, great zoom lens, really nice auto focus, deep depth of field making exterior shots, etc, really easy to focus, that excellent Canon color.
Negative:
1080 codec is weak, most of the internal profiles look pretty bad, lots of noise reduction - kinda mushy, lowlight is pretty bad, hard to achieve shallow depth of field with wide shots, expensive C-FAST cards only.
I would say for daylight shooting, this camera rules. Seems like a great stock footage camera, probably great on a Ronin or small SteadyCam.

Kubrickian reacted to BTM_Pix in The Quick & Dirty Dozen Lens Comparison
Following on from @mercer thread about mixing lenses, I thought I'd just do some quick grabs from different lenses for.....well, something to do, because its Sunday morning and I'm bored.
I thought I'd do a mishmash of a few typical different types, vintages and price ranges that you might adapt and some native ones so you can see how they'd match (or not).
Apologies for such a boring test scene but it seemed apt for such a boring test but it has enough elements to work with.
So, here are the 12 lenses and the various adapters for our test camera which was the Fuji X-T20.
We have the following in C/Y mount
Contax Zeiss Vario Sonnar 28-85 f3.3-4 Contax Zeiss Distagon 28 f2.8 Contax Zeiss Planar 50 f2.8 Contax Zeiss Sonnar 135 f2.8 We have the following in Nikon mount
Nikon Series E 28 f2.8 Nikon 28-105 AFD f3.5-4 Nikon 24-70 f2.8 G Sigma 35 f1.4 ART We have the following in M42 mount
Helios 44 58 f2 Carl Zeiss Jena Floktagon 35 f2.8 And we have the following native lenses
FujiFilm 35 f1.4 Fujifilm 60 f2.4 From this we can compare a somewhat matched set (the Contax Zeiss) with some cheap and old to expensive and new not matched set (the Nikons), some old and very cheap (the M42s) with new and native from Fuji. I have also done a couple of shots at different focal lengths from the Contax Zeiss and Nikon zoom.
All shots were the same exposure at f4 based on the slowest lens in the group.
All shots taken from the same position with the exception of the Contax Zeiss 135 f2.8 which, well, you can guess why that was from further away!
All shots are JPEG straight out of the camera and no post matching has been done.
Shot order (starting at 1 in top left and ending at 16 in the bottom right)
Contax Zeiss Sonnar 28-85 @ 85mm Contax Zeiss Sonnar 28-85 @ 50mm Contax Zeiss Sonnar 28-85 @ 35mm Contax Zeiss Sonnar 28-85 @ 28mm Contax Zeiss Planar 50mm Contax Zeiss Distagon 28mm Nikon Series E 28mm Nikon 28-105 @ 50mm Nikon 24-70G @ 70mm Nikon 24-70G @ 50mm Carl Zeiss Floktagon 35mm Helios 44M 58mm FujiFilm 60mm Fujifilm 35mm Sigma 35mm ART Contax Zeiss Sonnar 135mm I can put the individual files up at some point (not now, I'm going to the beach) if anyone is still awake and interested enough.

Kubrickian reacted to Nrubloc in The US solar eclipse and footage
I was able to visit the Nashville TN area and took a few images.
There was on and off light pockets of cloud veiling, but I took these as it was getting dark, then darker and when it was emerging.
