And some real low-light creds. URSA tops out at 1600 ISO vs 12800.
That’s like cutting off their nose to spite their face.

I never said there was anything wrong with the iq of the S-series. In fact I said it quite good. Is it better than the Canon? Sure it’s more detailed. It’s technically superior for sure regarding sensor dr, detail etc... But it has serious flaws with AF.

    BEHOLD, YE FLIPPY SCREEN!!!
Why the heck would they leave out this tidbit of information?... With this single morsel we have a full frame successor to the GH5/S.
I wonder what else they “forgot” to mention? Let’s hope PDAF. That would make this camera the full package in many people’s eye. I think with those two boxes checked it’s a quick sale.

Alexa and RED are made for professional productions with "real budgets" and "real crews". So needless to say a dedicated focus puller is generally part of the production's expense. But if you want to see some piss poor RED footage just do a search for "RED Raven footage". A lot of aspiring filmmaker bought that camera thinking they could do it alone... what a cluster Fuk of out of focus mess.
It's not for selfies... it's so a solo operator can frame their shots etc... without needing the talent in the scene. This of course is yet another issue a major production does not have to worry about.

It's looking like Panasonic blew it again. Was this thing not developed by the folks that designed the GH5? I guess not. Because it's clearly off the mark for many would be purchasers. I'll wait for the official release, but atm this camera is not looking like something I would buy into... that goes for the whole system. The Canon pro bodies should be interesting... depending on what they cripple? The XH2 may well be amazing. And if such a beast is ever released... the Sony A73 will likely be one to watch.

I’ll agree, if priced VERY aggressively, it will sell. But that price is going to need to be no more than the competition... Canon, Nikon and Sony... all priced well below $2k.

Well if this camera is going to be an option for major productions perhaps a flip screen and PDAF are not needed. After-all, if one is spending several million dollars on a production it's a given that they would have external wireless monitors and dedicated focus pullers. But for a small operation / one man band, well, a flip screen and PDAF could go a long way to make life easier. Perhaps I misunderstood who this camera is targeting? I'll let Michael Bay know at once.

Well there are two items that were perhaps the biggest complaints on the S1:
    1. No flip screen
    2. No PDAF
If Panasonic omits both of these items...  again, we can assume they are properly out of touch with their market. I honestly cannot recall anyone saying, “the S1 would be great... if only it had 6k recording”.

Not everyone needs AF. Just as not everyone needs IBIS... what you really need is a camera that captures gyroscopic metadata and stores it with the movie file so that you can use software such as Reel Steady to stabilize your footage in post.
I'm often using motion controllers. I like to use the motors to drive zoom instead of focus.  With a reliable AF this works amazingly well. It's great for effortlessly creating parallax shots.
I guess my point is, reliable AF gives you options... and can make getting the shot a little easier.

The train is obviously leaning heavily to the left. It’s bad and looks unrealistic. No “panPan” in that shot.
People blog on the EOS R. There is a lot of panning when they flip the camera around or spin at all.
No one wants to get in a pissing match about your camera and that you love it. Many people (even people who own it) express disappointment with Canon with it. It has some great features but a lot of compromises people can’t get over.

There is one area that favours good AF and that's when covering live events (festivals, sports etc) where you don't have any kind of control over your subject. You have about 1-2 seconds to capture the moment and nailing focus manually within that time frame is quite difficult (atleast for me). In those cases the difference between a average AF and good AF can be a life saver. So I do think that AF provides value to a camera even though maybe a lot of us never have to use it in controlled situations.

The EOS-R isn't perfect but it has no rolling shutter, biggest and most affordable lens lineup in the world, built in ND, stabilization, c-log, high bitrate, great audio, seamless transition between photo and video, and of course a great stills camera built in.
Until another company releases a camera in the same range to replace it I don't have much choice but to use the awful Canon..

And you seemed to have left out a few important feature the S1 lacks...
    EOS R:
    1. Higher resolution sensor.
    2. The most cinematic AF system to date. With no micro-hunting as witnessed in other system.
    3. Usable AF in low light conditions down to -6EV.
    4. Seamless use of legacy glass.
    5. ND adapter.
    6. Robust codec.
    7. Massive lens collection with included adapter.
    8. Great color science.
    9. More manageable size/weight... which means for many it’s more likely to be carried.
    10. And most importantly... IT’S A CANON!
OK, maybe that last one is more important to some people than others, but there it is.

This single photo tells us more than that whole press conference. What. The. Hell.
    1. Active cooling.
    2. Flip screen.
What else does it have that they neglected to leave out of an important press announcement?
How many people have been screaming for a capable full frame camera with a flip screen?!
God, they bungled this announcement. They needed to create buzz and excitement.
But it’s been named the most underrated camera of 2019 by Matti Hapaaja. Never mind it’s only June 2019. Never mind he received two free cameras from canon and “wasn’t paid” for his views. Uh huh.
Boogles my mind that Panasonic did not try to hype this up. I mean canon can hype a 5DIV in 2019 (EOS R).

Then who are they targeting? I'll tell you what, they had better start targeting a real market because if they don't their L-Mount is destined to fail.
Once we get into the $4k mark, I start to consider dedicated cinema cameras... not so much hybrids. For that money I want build in XLRs, NDs etc... For hybrids unless they are bringing something very unique... like the GFX 100 or purpose build sports cameras such as the 1DXMk2, I prefer a smaller more manageable size/weight. I really think Panasonic blew it on this one. I think many will praise it... but those praise will not translate into actual sales.
It's not that I'm opposed to new cameras. I will probably pickup the GFX 100 when it comes out. I just need to see some more footage. Granted, I want it mainly for stills. In the end, I think this new Panasonic is an answer to a question that no one was asking.

What I don’t understand is why the major manufacturers are allowing BlackMagic to be the only kid in town to offer internal ProRes/Raw in a DSLR/M form factor and why 4K 60p in 10 bit is considered a dream camera when it can be had for $1300?.

This looks like a pretty legitimate article... so the "game changer", the "cinema dream" is 6k @ 24 fps? A feature no one was asking for?
No flip screen, no PDAF and no built in ND? Disappointing. I think Panasonic will remain a distant last place sales wise. No one had a problem with the image quality of the S1. Personally, I really like the image of the S1. What the majority of people had a problem with was the contrast detect AF and the lack of a flip screen. Built in ND, while nice to have, was never expected on a hybrid... so it didn't lose points for lacking it. Leaving out the two most requested features is a huge disappointment... again!
Oh well, nothing to see folks, just a more usable 6k photo mode... that no one asked for.
