DBounce got a reaction from Alt Shoo in JVC is back with a new cinema camera!!
The only problem I have with full frame anamorphic support is there are no lenses that anyone buying a $4k cinema camera would purchase. You're looking at a minimum of $3k per lens... even for garbage SLR Magic full frame primes. To think the whole set can be had for what they use to ask for a single lens? ... and still I wouldn't buy them.  Honestly,  I wouldn't even take them for free.
So anamorphic wise what does that leave?... your best current option is perhaps ther Orion optics lenses... so $24k for a set.  Those aren't an option for operators that spend $4k for a body. And don't even think about zooms... they start at $65k... and that lens doesn't even cover full frame.
And AF with an anamorphic? Sorry nothing exist. If anyone makes a cinema camera with built in Anamorphic zoom, reasonably fast, a nice image, minimum of 10 bit, a editable codec, 14-16 stops dynamic range, clean iso to 6400 and good AF... with a rotating screen... that can use affordable media... Well, they will sell like hotcakes.
And don't tell me they can't make a decent quality anamorphic zoom with AF with clutchable manual option for reasonable money. Anamorphics have been around from the 1920's... It can be done.  And mark my words... the first cinema camera that includes this feature in a practical way will be a big hit.
I'm astounded that no one has done it yet. Anamorphic is synonymous with cinema.

I told them to build with a XC15 layout with a anamorphic zoom, ProRes, 10 bit built in, NDs.
Pictures that a “cinema “ camera with the one feature that is synonymous with cinema... anamorphic.
I would buy one... just don’t make it feel like plasticky crap.

I'm not so sure that there is no point to scanning in digital. Epson make some fairly ok film scanners. I see quite a lot of video's online where the images are scanned and they look great.
I think the real draw to film for me is the idea that you focus more on the creative process. Granted, you can disable everything and go full manual... which is largely how I shoot, save for focus. I like the more modern film look. 70s, 80s  through current... wait... I take that back. I like the "clean film" look. I'm not seeking to add artifacts to my images. I want a clean look, but with the organic soul that film has. I believe digital is a bit sterile. Looking back at some stills I took with my Fuji X-T3s; Fuji did a good job with their film emulations, but fall short of the genuine article. And frustratingly, the details are hard to pin down.
Film seems quite forgiving of overexposure. Whereas underexposure is far less so. Digital the the exact opposite; performing quite well when underexposed, but clipping the highlights with far less resistance than film. Granted you can always do a long exposure with film, provided your subject is not moving about.... unless that's the look you are going for.
It's entirely possible that I am simply misguided. It's not beyond reason that any interest in shooting with film is merely the result of some delusion. But nonetheless I'm liking the idea ?

Yes the whole point of ML for me, is that the images are artistic, low-fi, messed-up, film like, amazing to grade... The opposite of modern 8K digital.
No matter how good our expensive full frame mirrorless cameras get, there will always be a place for a ML raw video or Digital Bolex Super 16

Wanted to share my first trial with Canon EOS M, Magic Lantern RAW and vintage lenses.
Also the first time I use Davinci Resolve for editing and grading.
Overall I'm quite happy with the results.
    Here's the link: https://youtu.be/bDT8-ChgzrE.
Make sure to watch it in 4K, even on non-4K screens, because it has way less compression artefacts.
    Shot in mv1080 at 1736x976 resolution, 25fps.
Using Helios 44-2, Mir 1B and maybe in some shots the Jupiter 9.
Also used two stacked polariser filters as variable ND.
Didn't use a LCD viewfinder, but plan to use one next time.
Need to get more stable shots, so I applied stabilisation in post.
    Sound recorded with Rode VideoMicro.

It depends on how you do it. For example, I develop my negs at home, then use an old slide scanner on an dSLR to take photos of them and then develop the image in Adobe RAW. This was you can really fine tune the image exactly how you want it to be. I used to send them off to the shop, but was never really satisfied with how they processed them (random chain store, nowhere near my develops in house anymore). This is a similar scanner, I got it for 5euros.

Don't let any fear of delusions stop you, but maybe let them slow you down a bit and start with cheaper gear and see how you like it. I'd love to have the Xpan, and have them saved on my search lists, but the prices definitely stop me. Stills is a hobby for me, and having the stereo cam I mentioned before makes it that extra bit different to carrying digital. The Xpan would also do the same but at 500x the price.
Have a look for a Sigma DP1 or 2, I've had both but sold them because the batteries drove me mad, BUT if you look at that as a replacement for changing out your film roll, then they really do offer a great alternative to film. The images have a very nice quality to them, and despite their shortcomings they are very fun to use, and they hold their value very well. I bought both from the same guy for 150euros and sold them for 125 each hehe. @Mattias Burling also liked them, and he paid even less for his!

I really like underexposed film though. Brings out the grain and looks really cool. Of course its a certain look that only works sometimes.

For me film is plain fun and I shoot all my personal photography on 35mm and medium format cameras. It helps to separate my day to day work stuff (product photography amongst other things) from my passion. There’s a lot to learn and a lot of experimentation which I enjoy. I like the results more than digital for family stuff, I spend less time in front of a computer and I love feel of the cameras. I like the delayed gratification of the  development process and the anticipation of seeing the results.
You can pick up a canon SLR for £10 and a roll of B&W for £5, lab development costs in the UK are £4 a roll and you can scan with a DSLR and an IPAD (light-table).
Give it a go but go in gently I say.

Poor AF is really Panasonic's main roadblock to greatness. Virtually everyone else has at least somewhat usable AF at this point. Panasonic has no excuses left.

I actually just got a 90s Nikon 35mm camera. Film really isn't that expensive and can be digitally processed pretty cheaply. Film cameras are pretty dirt cheap too(depending on the model),

I am only going to shoot film for paid photography work now. Its just way more interesting IMHO, digital photography is just a bit boring to me. Why try to replicate the film look when you can just shoot on film.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Mamiya RB67. It is a big Ox but if you are going to shoot MF, shoot 6x7. You have to crop the shit out of the Hasselblad 6x6 that you end up with only a 645 size which is not so hot. Why bother. Plus the view in the optical viewfinder, and even the pop up waist level finder is to die for. And you can print Really big with one. And the big bonus is they just about give away the bodies and the lenses. Cheap thrills. But they are not a speed demon.
Hell just go out and buy a 4x5 view camera and get crazy good results. You really learn a lot about movements using them. Shoot B&W, that is where they excel. Toyo makes a beautiful full metal Field Camera that is a piece of art for not much moeny. I like Horseman ones also. I have owned at least 30 MF cameras easy, and 10 or more view cameras.. They are habit forming.

The  overhead in post is certainly much better with a 1080p workflow. I would argue the improved post overhead is a much greater difference that any perceptible difference in image quality. Keep in mind, if the target audience is YouTube, a large percentage of mobile devices... including all iOS device, do not support resolutions beyond 1080p.

Then that would seem to suggest these are not very good cameras.... wouldn't it? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that these are quick test with a non-production ready unit. I do hope these cameras are amazing. For now though it's more something I will just keep an eye on and see how it develops.

DBounce got a reaction from MacMurphy in They did it! Fuji GFX 100 first to bring pro video specs to medium format with 10bit 4K at 400Mbit, F-LOG and IBIS
Yes but most of the video centric versions ditch IBIS.. GH5S(No IBIS) S1H(No IBIS) etc... Certainly no professional cinema cameras have IBIS. For me I see IBIS as great for stills... horrible for video; it can sometimes warp the image and ruin the shot. This is understandable as the sensor is also correcting for yaw and pitch. If IBIS only corrected for X Y axises. I believe this would not be such a problem. I feel ultimately, EIS, as seen on the Osmo Action and GoPro... but with better quality, will be the future for cinema. And with large sensors like this, it would be very feasible.

I’d bet that is due to the lenses. They shot this on Atlas anamorphic primes. Which imo are far from sharp. Indeed, Atlas states they were trying to achieve a vintage aesthetic with these lenses.
