Harsh crowd... Note to RED, next time, give it to someone who only knows how to shoot outdoors, without lighting... that seems to get the juices running.
Are people actually upset that they are showcasing how the footage will look in a professional environment? This is far more interesting than the recent BM4.6K footage that could have been done by anyone capable of hitting the on/off switch. I actually want to see how the skintones and colour will look with lighting. Is it over stylised and narratively meaningless? Sure... Is it useful for the person looking to purchase, hell yea. (and I generally hate RED's marketing ways and means).

Personally I tend to overexpose to protect the highlights - which aren't great on the NX1. But the shadows tend to retain more info than on other cameras (i.e GH4).

About contrast, I felt it really impact the skin tones. So you might wanna run some tests wish people, not just landscapes : )

You can assign magnify to the centre button using custom keys in the main menu.
They do indeed have work to do on ergonomics though. Samsung got it surprisingly right with the NX1, a few quirks aside.

    A test I ran a while ago : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2COkbUi82zM
Almost only skies ^^. Youtube compression doesn't help, as well as the LUTs I applied. But there is still some banding and a little macro blocking on the graded file (before youtube compression). Hope that helps...

Hi everyone, I started running some tests on the new Samsung Firmware 1.2 for the NX1 camera.
As a lot of users I was very impatient in testing the new Gamma DR curve, seeing if it would improve the dynamic range of the camera.
So far in my first tests I cannot say that I have seen real improvement between Gamma DR vs Standard profile in terms of dynamic range.
It is very hard to measure the dynamic range of a camera - especially when you don't have the facility/tests procedures. And I don't. So my tests are definitely not scientific. Furthermore I don't have images to share yet (hoping that will come soon and please feel free to share yours).
Now there are 4 settings that can affect the dynamic range in the NX1:
    - Profile mode (standard, gamma, etc.)
    - Contrast value (-10, +10)
    - Master pedestal value (-15, +15)
    - luminance level (0-255, 16-235)
From my early results what I can say is that going to an extreme setting (gamma DR, contrast -10, MP +15) result on losing skin tones and might increase macro blocking in bright areas. I had much better results with almost the same settings, but putting contrast at -5. But you'll also notice that if you take the standard profile and tweak the contrast at -10 you will have comparable results. Also setting the master pedestal at +15 increases the details in the blacks, but you also lose details in the brighter areas (and you might find an actor's face to have some light reflections, and you might lose those details). However it can be useful in situations where you will need a lot of details in the blacks. For instance I had the experience of filming a music video featuring a black actor dressed in a black suit - and very little lighting. This is typically the kind of situations where the master pedestal will come in handy (and good lighting also). I noticed that a lot of people rely on the master pedestal to give this "film look" and personally I don't recommend it. It is often underrated how soft highlights participated in the film look. With a master pedestal at +15 you will lose some of that imho.
So these are my findings so far, I know that illustrating with videos would help a lot, but I don't have this kind of time right now so apologies to the community. I will be very interested in learning from your experiences with the new firmware.

I wouldn't say it is the opposite. And to be able to raise the blacks in post, you need your sensor to be able to actually record those information. I don't think that raising the MP makes you lose DR, but simply it readjusts the DR of the camera to give you more details in the black (and I believe losing details in the highlights).

But I don't believe in a magic "log" profile that will suddenly give you 15 stops of DR when your camera can really only output 10. And for me its not relevant how much DR my camera has. It is much more relevant how it treats blown out and black areas (ex. film like). Overall I am very happy with the DR of the NX1. If there is one thing that I wish Samsung could improve, it would be the banding / macro blocking because it is a giveaway of  a digital semi pro camera.

    Dragon sensor + 4k @ 120p : ) (vs crop factor and ergonomics)

To be serious - I think the ergonomics of the Ursa Mini are its biggest selling point vs Red Raven. However they both need a few k$ to be "operational". I'm really curious to see how the "image signature" compares to the image of the Red Raven - and it's awkward crop factor...

It's funny how people act surprised... This is RED we are talking about... We all said right after they announced it that their 4K couldn't be for all. It's for people who want to shoot film quality images on a budget. Yes a cinema camera (its still a dragon sensor seriously guys !!!). Now the real problem I see is the crop factor.
Aside from that you still get a Dragon sensor 4K RAW 120fps camera for 10k.
Now I don't think that everyone needs a Dragon Sensor, but prior from this announcement you couldn't get a dragon sensor for less than what ? 30k - 40k ?
I think Red enlarged the choice for us. But if people thought they were going to have a run"gun camera from Red, they would be disappointed I guess

Sure it's way more expensive once all of the stupidly overpriced accessories are added, but still...Getting a dragon sensor for 10K shootable is pretty cool in my opinion.
And 4K 120fps it's something pretty differentiating from others in its price bracket.
The only thing that's a deal breaker for me is the crop/mount combination.

Your CFast media price seems a little wonky.
Cursory search reveals that the approved Lexard 3400x cards cost:
    128GB = USD 341.99
    256GB = USD 677.80
And I mean, those are B&H prices. Guaranteed you can find a better deal.

That said, this stuff (media prices) changes by the second, so I respect your compiling effort.
I await the published Raven specs. Hoping for some real awesome DR and possibly even HDRx capability.

Sounds reasonable. That's similar terrain to the H1+ and CameTV Single. I like the option using it as 5-axis double handle or 3-axis single handle.
The real issue for me with the Nebula 4000 was that people seemed to be really struggeling to get it tweaked just right. This is the most crucial part to get right and I feel like that's one of the reasons so many people are going with Pilotfly right now. They post combinations of cameras and lenses and it appears to be fairly easy to adjust. From another tech point the CameTV Single has the encoders which seem to do a great job.
Seems the new Filmpower stabilizers are tool-free, which is a great plus. It's where others were heading as well. Good trend. Some added bluetooth control is nice too. Appears to have enough space to balance a camera and a somewhat bulkier lens, which I like. Feels like they've listened to what users of the Nebula 4000 and other pistol grip gimbal stabilizers said they were still missing/struggeling with. Including the up/down bounce. I was waiting for things to mature to a point that I'd believe it would be a must have tool in the bag. This might just be it.
But like DBounce says... I need some more proof of concept than what I've seen so far. I'll probably wait till names like Dave Dugdale, Emm/MrCheesycam, Nitsan Simantov, Tom Antos, Jordan Drake, Erik Naso and/or others have giving it a proper review.

c100mk2 is a great cam but you are going to be limited to 1080p.
Have a look at the FS5 & Ursa mini cameras that will give you more flexibility on the productions that you can take. Very soon you will loose possible jobs if you cannot deliver 4K.
In my opinion that's a waste of money. If you want a camera to do photos at that price range you should consider the GH4/NX1/A7rii that all do excellent video as well. Difference between the quality of the pictures is not as much as the internet tries to argue.
That is waste of money as well. It might have been fine if you want to be portable and you are working with Final cut, but for everything else get a custom build desktop! You will be editing faster with no need for proxies when you move to 4K...

weapons bare body is much smaller than the ursa mini bare body, much more compact and better suited for movi type stabilizers.
image quality wise I would be surprised if the new 4.6k ursa sensor performs better than the red dragon sensor but wait and see.
but the price of a working red raven package will likely be at least twice that of a ursa mini 4.6k though.

Seems to me that GH4 always had a huge noise problem. I interpreted that as "faking dynamic range".

So V-Log just makes that worse :/ But will be curious to see more results, and test some more - especially with the "legit" version (if it really changes anything...)
