  1. So this is my experience with the rode videomic pro and gh4/samsung. I didn't make a comparison gh4 vs NX1, as I feel the sound I'm getting from the rode videomic pro is really horrible unless being super close in a super quiet environment. I don't think that adding an external preamp improves the quality of the videomic pro. It is really made towards dslr users so wether its in camera preamp or external I feel like the sound is quite the same. As for my experience I went from nx1 + rode videomic pro to nx1+ tascam (70-D) + rode ntg3. It is much bigger and more expensive. But I couldn't get much of a useable sound from the video mic pro unless in very specific conditions (speaking super closely + total noiseless room). So In the end it turned out that I would never use the video mic much. However if you're goal is just to have a little better sound that the camera mic, then I think its fine Also the budget is very different, and it is a very important factor. For my personal taste I feel like 100€ for something I can't use is too expensive
  2. Not so smooth on mine, but definitely better than all other apps. Also it doesn't crush the blacks as much as mplayerX.
  3. Andrew, thats what I thought until I saw some minor improvement in macroblocks. I'll run a few comparison test when I have time :/
  4. The exposure shift is real, never had that with any of my GH's (2,3,4).
  5. The transcoding works very well - after that depends on your output settings. I output prores xtreme (probably 4444) and the mbpr struggles with it.
  6. I had some exposure shifts, and all along the auto brightness was off. You'll probably still have some exposure shifts, theyll just be more subtle... but definitely noticeable :/
  7. Its real Check out 4kshooters apparently the firmware has been demoed publicly !
  8. The exposure drift is probably more tricky to fix - this firmware is mostyl added features than bug fixes. But we ll have to wait and see I guess
  9. Crazy... If this is true it's really super impressive from Samsung's part ! It's like a firmware "on demand"... ! The only thing missing is a fine tuning of the noise reduction - on my part. And a complete movie mode also (its kind of weird to have to go to preview all the time). Anyway I just love this camera
  10. Personally I'd say that skin tone matter most when you're in a controlled environment. On a set with tons of lighting, you definitely need to nail those skin tones. But its also a matter of personal style. Which do you film more ? Characters, people, animals, sunsets ? I also agree than on most dslrs dialing the contrast / saturation too low will kill your skin tones. Don't have a preference though when it comes to that, although I do appreciate the Alexa - but in this kind of budget I would expect a camera that excels in this field !
  11. You're right Andrew, actually I didn't time both of them with the same clips. It was just a feeling that iFFMPEG was doing a better job for about the same speed . Thanks for checking that out. Also regarding the macroblocking, I believe that if you choose the "extreme" settings in Prores, it automatically chooses the highest bitrate for macroblocks - as I see no difference in terms of rendering nor size between a extreme with macroblocks @ maximum, and extreme with "auto". If I have time I'll make a test between Extreme and HQ with highest settings for macroblocks (maybe we can save on a few Gb).
  12. My pleasure ! Also, I found myself struggling a little bit with the Prores quality settings. They re split in many different menus :/ One setting that I am testing right now is the macroblocking bit rate. I feel like this is what hurts the NX1 the most during compression. I'll let you know if it works for me ! Also I m kind of surprised at the speed. I don't find the app substantially slower than wondershare for example. Regarding contrasts settings do you know if it is possible to roll it down (like wondershare) ? Thanks again !
  13. So funny Andrew, I just bought this app today and was about to make a topic on EOSHD forum when I saw your post I just shot a commercial (france) yesterday with the NX1, and was quite disappointed with wondershare (tons of banding). IFFMPEG is a huge improvement in terms of quality. And I also agree that when you don't want to bother with command lines 17 (21€ in France) is a bargain. Now I don't know if you noticed, but some settings needs a restart of the app to be applied - although the app doesn't warn you -. Such as changing the destination folder for example. Cheers from France!
  14. If its the 16-50mm f2-2.8 - then it does have a i button on it.
  15. Hi Andrew, I would be very interested in knowing your first thoughts at the NX1 / Shogun combination ? I am thinking of getting one too, but so far I am a bit disappointed about the battery life (from what I read). However it would really make the workflow easier... Thanks and Merry Christmas !
  16. Hi Andrew, I read about it on personal-view: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12008/samsung-nx1-open-source-development Apparently it is only a part of it that is "open". It seems there is no access to fps, resolution, etc. :/
  17. Just got mine today with the 16-50mm (edit: f2.0-2.8). Coming from the GH series (2,3,4) I must say it is very different. A few frustrating points about the ergonomics, like the fact that the grids or levels disappear when pressing record (video). I love the colors overall. The picture can seem a bit unnatural when sharpness isn't dialed a bit down. And big thanks to Andrew for the Wondershare tutorial ! Saved me a lot of time and trouble ! Also I have to say that for me rolling the contrast to -12 in wondershare wasn't enough, I had to go to - 18. I'll make a few tests to see what the trade off is. Also just read that samsung made the NX1 open source (I don't know if it's all of it, or just parts / softwares). But this camera is really exciting ! Big thanks to Andrew, I just got mine , it is definitely not perfect (which he never said otherwise), and I definitely don't regret it ! I probably won't be using my gh4 for some time now !
  18. Can't wait for a review of those fixes Should have mine on monday - don't know if it will come with the update...
  19. Andrew, Thanks for this great article ! It is a great answer to the "lab" article. And maybe sometimes they should follow your example in taking their cameras out of their labs, into the real life. I really love your grading, and the colors of this Samsung. Expecting mine to come in tomorrow, already got the Samsung 16-50mm - btw I think the build quality is really good -. Can't wait to try this little beast. I really appreciate how you honestly approached the different downsides of this camera. I wish more people would have been critical of the GH4 when it came out - for me it was a disappointment, I still believe that the GH3 is nicer in terms of colors, and is often cleaner -. Also I think it would be fantastic if you would share with the community your grading technique - especially your filmconvert settings. Thanks again, and can't to take this little camera all around the world to play with it ! Cheers !
  20. I don't own one, but from all the videos I've seen, the NX1 seems to perform well - in good light conditions. But as an owner of a GH4, I must say that I never use autofocus in video mode. Especially with an old lens like the 20mm Pana 1.7, useless autofocus. Same with the 45mm Olympus... Maybe the 12-32 and 35-100 perform better...
  21. A - Video: Although it looks less detailed than B, in camera sharpening can do the trick B - Raw: More info in dark areas, where I believe is where the camera in video lacks of a flat profile. Edit: Also CA which is visible in image B can be visible in a raw file if uncorrected (which is the point of a raw file).
  22. I'd say that I have no idea, which is what makes this camera so nice for video - and point taken ! Now I can't wait to hear about this new grading technique :)
  23. Yes it has 4:2:2 but 8 bits :/ Btw - Thanks Andrew for the follow up :)
