But they are still more oriented towards stills. Same as A6300 and A7RII which can also do video very well. But whatever the RX10 is, it is not a professional camcorder, which both the XC10 and X70 are.
Btw, the AX100/X70 also have 1'' sensors.

    Apples to oranges.
The XC10 should be compared to the AX100 from Sony, not the RX10 II which is primarily a stills camera.
EDIT: actually the Sony X70 is a better match since it's got the same MSRP as the XC10.

You can add XLR support to any camera with an HDMI output.
The Blackmagic View Assist 4K for example has two mini XLRs on it, plus it will be in sync with your recording unlike a separate dual-system audio recorder.
So don't use it for low light applications then!
Right tool for the job and all that.
Anyway it's actually perfectly usable at ISO 6400 in 1080p with Canon LOG or up to 1600 in 4K.
Remember a lot of the time you don't need higher than 3200 or 6400 in low light.
Another case of where just looking at the specs doesn't tell the whole story.
It's the 1" sensor that makes the lens possible at all, in such small packaging. 24-240mm with 5 axis stabilisation is not to be sniffed at. It's a lot sharper than the 14-140mm Lumix you can put on the GX80 and the codec is better - much higher bitrate and 422 colour.
Personally I like the GX80 when it is with super fast glass so I wouldn't both using it as an XC10 replacement.
    They're complimentary.
    GX80 for interchangeable lenses and XC10 as a Super 16mm style shot-getter.
OK I get that there are many people who don't want to own more than one camera, so the one camera they do buy must do EVERYTHING.
Well there is no such camera.
I would not advocate replacing a A6300 and A7S II with the XC10 without knowing how it was going to be used by the shooter in question. I can only put the facts out there. The XC10 can do a lot the Sonys cannot:
    - It doesn't overheat during a shoot (A6300 is not suitable as your only camera for anything to be honest)
    - It doesn't require any investment in lenses. A6300 may not be $2000 but add up the cost of the lenses!
    - Sony's colour does not have what it takes
    - A7S II and especially A6300 rolling shutter is much worse than the XC10
    - A7S II's AF in video mode is rubbish
    - Ergonomics on the Sony bodies are charmless
    - Battery life is rubbish as well
So just have in mind what the strengths and weaknesses are before you write off the XC10 just because it doesn't have a full frame sensor or ISO 408,000

I am afraid, most of us here, has never had an XC10 in their hand.
But we can still exchange views and ideas, that’s the forum about.
I don’t buy a camera, like my wife chooses a car.
-Look honey, I want this one, it has such a nice color :-)
If a camera’s specifications are not good enough, why should I use time to test it???
For me the XC10 is a monster, clear mistake from product management.
    Not good for photography.
No RAW. It could be a firmware update but Canon would for sure not do it.
    The lens is so-so
    Weak continuous shooting
    No IR flash-sync
    No autofocus lamp
Few manual adjustments, everything is in menus
    No B shutter

Not good enough for professional video work.
    The lens is so-so…
There is a On/Off ND-filter, but no control over it.
    There is no powerzoom.
    No XLR
    Strange solution for viewfinder
The bitrate (305 Mbs) is more a sign of bad codec

Not interesting for the amateurs either.
Too expensive, especially with the memory cards.
Too much data to work with
Probably very high loss of value.
    Too big and strange ergonomics
Too weak for the competition :-)
I doubt, the video file of the XC10 is better than the GH4 with the 14-140 kit lens, and the Panasonic is way better for photography. And, don't forget to check the price.
That is my view on it :-)

I earn my money among others with the XC10 and I enjoy it.
crazy the a say with a nikon j5 here oh god.
    1. Price XC10: ~ $ 1,700
    2. Price CFast card: Transcend 64Gb 2.0 ... 59 $
                                      128Gb ... 100 $
    3. XLR? ... A small adapter .... $ 40
    4. ND .... she has a.
and when I say "very good" photos need, I'll do it with a Canon 5D III and not with an A6300, RX10 III
The XC10 is a Video camera with photo function ... and a RX10 III, A6300, a photo camera with Video function.
Here to talk some with which they had never been in his hand,
let have ever worked with her.

But the price of 2000 USD ! add another 500 and you have a7sii, or two a6300 / gh4. i don't know man, the video must have been miles ahead of others to even consider paying 2000 for non constant aperture, no raw photos hybrid one lens camera :|
anyway, will you add video too Andrew ?

It allows you to get a shot you wouldn't otherwise get, at a speed you wouldn't otherwise be able to operate at.
In certain types of filmmaking (documentary, run & gun, mood pieces, street scenes, real life scenes) that is invaluable.
I'm not saying you should stop carrying other cameras and just get one, either.
I wouldn't replace my GX80 with the XC10 and lose the use of interchangeable lenses, etc.
However the XC10 hardly compromises on the image at 305Mbit 4:2:2 vs 100Mbit 4:2:0 or the dynamic range (Canon LOG vs no LOG)

As written in the article "You can touch the screen whilst recording to rack focus. It works well but not quite as well as Dual Pixel AF on the 1D X Mark II since there’s a millisecond of a shimmer at the end of the rack. Contrast detect AF doesn’t yet eliminate hunting." Actually this my major problem with Panasonic/Olympus cameras. I have the Sony A5100, the only touch-operable Sony Alpha camera, and because of its phase detect autofocus points, it performs brilliantly smooth, shimmer-less focus pull for $500. This inherent shimmer in MFT cameras practically negates an important benefit of their anyway brilliant touch screens. Canon 70D, 80D and Sony A5100 are the only reasonably priced cameras (all HD-only, unfortunately) that can perform shimmer-free touch-to-pull-focus operation. Sony is repeating its silly mistakes again and again not to add touch-operability to its excellent 4K PDAF cameras: A7Rii, A6300.

Excellent points, John, Thank you so much for sharing. My problem is that point (2) kills the benefit of (1). Practically, with a MFT camera including this GX80/85 the only way to record video is: focus - shoot - stop - refocus - shoot and stop. You cannot adjust focus precisely during video recording: no magnification for MF, and unusable (shimmering hunting) AF. The 4K image quality is great, but the ergionomics on Panasonic cameras for video recording is absolutely not my style because of these reasons. They are so close: why the hell they don't buy Sony PDAF 4/3 sensors into their cameras and add magnification with a firmware update? This is beyond me.
BUT, in this article Andrew pointed out that the GX80/85 outputs clean HDMI that can be used by an external recorder. A decent external recorder definitely has excellent focus peaking and MAGNIFICATION WHILE RECORDING, therefore this limitation of the GX80/85 and all other MFT cameras is mitigated. At least a workaround solution to the accurate-manual-refocus-while-recording problem; Hmm, I like the idea. Blackmagic Design Video Assist 4K 7" 1920x1200 XLR recorder is only $900 + GX85 with excelent IBIS and 4/3" large sensor is only $800; total is $1700, not a bad deal. Thank you, Andrew,  for the excellent hint/suggestion/idea. Anyhow, I am waiting for the hopefully-forthcoming "4K edition of Sony A5100", then I'll make my decision.

Interesting preliminary review... Great work finding out about the live HDMI output in 4k 422. The information I had read said this was NOT the case. Wonderful surprise!
After playing with the GX80 for the last couple of days, I've noticed some things:
    1) Having a stabilised, sharp manual focus preview REALLY helps getting a lock-on quickly with older lenses.
    2) It's a shame I can't keep the magnified view during focus AFTER half-pressing the shutter or starting a video recording.
    3) The back wheel for adjusting shutter speed/aperture is too stiff and has a protrusion just under it, making it difficult to turn and press.
    4) Personally, I haven't seen any moiré, but I didn't do any technical tests. My GX7 would have had in the same situations.
    5) Audio sounds like there's a faucet running in the distance whenever IBIS is on. Really, it's only good for syncing in post, I imagine.
So far, I'm enjoying it and the GX80/85 seems to be a great camera for both stills and video.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been looking into this over the past few weeks. Terms get thrown around all the time and there's quite a bit of confusion regarding lenses and sensor size. Here are my notes:
Focal length = angle of view, Perspective = camera to subject distance, F-stop = depth of field, T-stop = light coming into the lens and hitting the sensor
What makes a lens great = high micro-contrast, high sharpness across the field, low distortion, round bokeh balls, low chromatic aberration, no vignetting, and maintains colors, easy-to-use, durable. Seemingly mathematical, but if you like the look, you like the look. It's more subjective than people think.

A5100 is interesting. Seems like a better deal than the A6000 to me but was overlooked
I looked into the image quality and it seems identical to the popular A6000 but with that all important touchscreen for the phase-detect AF.
Sony are really silly not putting a touch screen on the A6000 and A6300, especially for the YouTube vlog crowd.
No magnification during recording on GX85 sadly. Hoping GH5 will have this.

Bullshit, especially since most modern ILC lenses are fly by wire and lack any precision at all. My a7rII can lock onto a face and track it while flying on a gimbal and I can tap the LCD of my a5100 to focus on anything I want with perfect precision. Have you seen the way Canon's dual pixel can track and rack focus? It's awfully nice to have the camera track someone during an interview or a walk and talk without trying to judge whether or not they're in focus, even when shooting something like the 50/1.2. My eyes have recently just started to degrade a bit with everything from arms length to right against my face getting a little fuzzy, AF has saved my bacon more than once. Who cares as long as you get the shot and payment is made? For a one man band like me, AF has been a gift from above. I'll never buy another camera that can't match my a7rII.
    YMMV

A comment that  caught my attention.  That its much more challenging for professional photographers to make a good living now more then ever.  Thats a thought thats not unimportant in that the market has shrunk.

One of my close friends spent a few years working as a wedding photographer, super talented and very busy and making good money has seen some slowdown.  He has friends who are hurting and those people wont be buying a new Canon anytime soon.  In fact comments are now about what NIKON is doing.

I think that the 5D MK II started a video revolution by accident.
I think it caught Canon by surprise.
I think they road the wave sold a bunch 5Ds and rebels and more importantly glass.
I think they used this wave to build out there Cinema line.
I don’t think they were never comfortable keeping the video beat going in DLRS period for whatever reason.

Problem is the market is evolving very fast and the market it not the same now as it was 5 years ago.  Not in terms of technology and not in terms of who is buying cameras now and how many of them there are and for what purpose.  Canon is too conservative and moves to slow for whats going on now…… they may end up paying a heavy price.

I can buy an NX1 for the cost of selling off one of my Canon lenses, which is a very likely outcome for all of my Canon lenses considering I have no intention to use Canon DSLRs if these new 5D series cameras are indicative of what to expect from them in the future.

I'm not convinced by the Canon 1DC being that greater buy 2nd hand at £6,700 (current eBay price)  You can get the Sony FS7 for around that which has Professional onboard sound with XLR ports , built in NDs and 180fps super slow mo.   I thought the point of getting a DSLR is because its a cheaper option for video.  Once your spending over 5 grand then you might as well get a proper dedicated S35 video camera like the FS7 or one of the responses to it by Blackmagic or Canon in 2015.  You will get more freelance work with one of those I reckon.
