At this rate Canon will catch up with a 2 year old Nikon sensor. 7D Mark II at DPReview on the studio scene is behind the D7100 (2 years old), 5D Mark III, Fuji X-T1 and Samsung NX1 for all aspects of image quality.

And the sensor in the G1 X Mark II is behind the Panasonic LX100 and Sony RX100 Mark III in all aspects of the image http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-LX100-sensor-review-Potent-point-and-shoot/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-LX100-vs-Canon-PowerShot-G1-X-Mark-II-vs-Sony-Cyber-shot-DSC-RX100-III-Tradeoff-in-performance-against-smaller-Sony-sensor

Canon are said to be working on a dual ISO sensor with alternating pixels at low and high ISOs to extend dynamic range. The 5D Mark III already has an alternating line technique for this but Canon didn't implement it. Magic Lantern did but only unofficially.

I think Canon will definitely take a step in 2015.

The question is... will it be a catch-up step or a revolution?

Juan Le reacted in If you could have one camera for video, and one alone
Yeah I considered adding the GH4 to my list. I think with a Speed Booster - perhaps the BMCC version for more light and S35 crop - and a Ninja Star to get 10-bit colour (4K down sampled to HD) it would be enough for me. I also wish there were more tests online of the GH4 (down sampled 4K) with in-camera noise reduction turned on. I hate using Neat Video as part of my post workflow, and the GH4 image is more than sharp enough for me already.

I wish I had the money and time to justify buying a 5D3 just to shoot RAW for my own personal use, but the GH4 is so much more practical and useable. In fact, the C100 MkII is so expensive for what it is, and for personal stuff it's bigger than I prefer, so the GH4 is a good compromise between the two. In good light, GH4 footage can be made to look remarkably close to the C100 (see 1st video below). It's just the colours that aren't as stunning as from the C100 (I'm a certified colour junkie). I think with a Ninja the GH4 colours can look great though (see 2nd video below) ...

    Vs. C100:

    10-bit (Ninja) vs. h264:

For me the difference in colour between the C100 and GH4 (in the 1st video) is very significant. The GH4 looks flat, muddy and dead in colour terms compared to the C100. But looking at the colours in the 10-bit vs 8-bit GH4 video, it looks like a Ninja could fix that ...

Juan Le got a reaction from Julian in FM lens discount
If you want to talk respect, I think it's a matter of respecting the market and the product, over whether or not you are in a position to be making a good deal on a potential purchase. Yannis, the way you expressed your desire to further lower the cost of these products was negatively perceived because you were coming from a perspective of entitlement and cynicism/pessimism. Is the seller not respecting us by only giving a 10% discount to a bulk order? That is entirely subjective, I do not think it's appropriate to pursue this objectively.

People that respect the market for these kind of products aren't outraged because they understand the value of a product like this. They understand how much something like an Iscorama cost, and what the alternatives to it would cost. So when product like the FM is released, that doesn't cost $4k, 2k, 1k, those that understand and respect the market will adhere to any price range that deemed reasonable by the majority. The people in this thread that opted in for the sale obviously believe in the product, and know that for the feature they were getting that would be a really good deal. They believed it because demos were provided and nothing were hidden; no one would buy this product if they didn't see what it was capable of first, and we were given that.

I agree that more demo would be nice, and a review from somebody reputable would be excellent. But that's not possible yet and that is why I didn't opt in for the bulk purchase, even while fully understanding the value that this product can bring. I just need to see it in action by someone like Andrew before I could be committed to a product so new by a company that is equally as new. So I see where you are coming from Yannis, I just think you could have expressed it in better terms. I hope my criticism isn't too harsh.

I am excited to see you all get your hand on it and share your opinion of it so that I may be making a sure and fully informed purchase in the future. Let put all doubts aside and be excited and hopeful for this piece of technology; let be more optimistic!

    Cheers,

You mentioned DSLR, so I am guessing you have a decent understanding of the process to take pictures. You can shoot either a jpg image or a RAW image. With video though, you can only shoot what amounts to a jpg image in video mode. The jpg system in the camera "bakes in" the settings that you set the camera to work with, and in the process it clobbers the file making it much harder to "processes later in your computer. Video people have their own language and they don't call it processing the video, they call it "grading" the video. You know, like teenagers have their own language, video people have their own language :)

So in an effort to do the very least clobbering of the file, and leaving as much of the information still to remain in the video, an effort is made to to do as little damage to the file as possible. To do this, the video is shot as "flat" as possible. This means little contrast, little color saturation, little sharpness - basically the most untouched the file can get. This leaves as much of the original data as possible to still be there to addressed and called upon when you get the video into the computer.

Companies recognize this process and they try to help. Just like you would have color calibrations called vivid, portrait, landscape, natural, standard and so on, they add special color choices for video. Sony has s-log, Panasonic is adding v-log, and so on. It is as dumbed down as the file can get and still get recovered in the computer.

The joke, or facts are, it still doesn't get as good as a raw file you would be using for pictures, and you are still using a partially baked compressed file that is just "less clobbered". In my pro work, I shoot raw for stills. For video i shoot as flat as I can get the video, but it still ain't no raw file. On the other hand, raw files for video are not easy to work with like raw files for still images. And there are not that many cameras that even offer it, plus the knowledge it takes to process the video - or "grade" the video is harder to do.

Vlog is Panasonic's attempt to hardwire a very flat file for us to work with. They had CineD before this and I personally didn't like it. I found "natural" on the GH4 with everything turned to the flattest setting and for me is better to work with. In low light I like "vivid" with everything turned flat and seem to get lower noise. I am eager to see if this vlog will give a nice flat file to work with. For you, you need to remember your video shot in vlog will look terribly flat and bland. You will have to work it once in the computer, it isn't  a set-it-and-forget-it type of setting.

    Hope that helps some.

I want to say that the Sankor adapter out performs most projector lenses. It can focus closer, it's smaller and lighter, it doesn't cost that much more compare to other adapters, and the image quality is good for the price you are paying. I don't have any experience using the projector lenses so I can't speak for them myself personally, but just based on what I've read they're more suitable for experienced people that want to experiment and have a rig setup already that can support large lens adapter and front-heavy setup.

Pretty much. The speed booster give you an extra stop of light, so an f2.8 become something similar to an f2, and an f1.8 would be something like f1.2 or f1. Depends on the speed booster (expensive booster tend to use better glass) you can achieve extra sharpness as well.

Sankor can be had for as little as $150 on ebay.  If you're just starting out you don't need a mint one really.  And any of the 2x adapters are all similar.  Yes they are heavy and will strain the lens mount a little, but it really won't make a difference.  The speedbooster makes for a great mount and the Nikon lenses are old style metal housing which is really strong.  If anything you'll have a hard time focusing with the weight on the lens.  But you have to dual focus anyway (one for the Nikon, other for the Sankor).

Most projector lenses are a minimum of 40mm m4/3 (85mm full frame).  You still might get a vignette on the corners.  50mm w/ speedbooster on the GH4 4K will come out to around 85mm FF equivalent so you'll be right there.  If anything shoot with the new version 2.0 firmware for the GH4.  Then you can use the new Photo 4K modes, and if you shoot 1:1 (2880x2880 square) then you can stretch and crop the image using the center of the lens.  This will reduce the vignette quite a bit and maybe you can shoot wider.  You can look up Luke Neumann on youtube and see his quick tutorial on how to use the version 2.0 4K photo modes.

Does it not seem ironic that this website is made to promote professional works done by users, and to discriminate against amateur contents and mass media advertisements, all the while trying to profit from an existing video hosting platform via ads and subscriptions?

It all seem very gimmicky to me, at least the part where you guys are claiming "upload", yet are just embeddings of Vimeo players that are linked from Vimeo itself. This is a played out idea done by sites like Reddit and Imgur in my opinion, the question is do we need more of these, and how badly?
