kidzrevil reacted to Marco Tecno in NX1/NX500 Hack Test Footage
Tommix, as far as I can tell, the process is all but simple. As pavel wrote, patience is a keyword here. Otto created some nice scripts. Vasile seems to have upped the bitrate. Chant is delving into the main code.
Three must be the conditions joined by a logical AND:
- Interested in nx system
- higly knowledgeable in sw development and Linux system
- have time
Not that easy to return a TRUE value ;-)

Tommix. It's cool that your really interested in the hacking project, just like everyone else in this forum. But knock off the attitude. These guys are putting in their spare time to give you extra camera features for free. Everything they do is a gift to the community, they don't owe you or me anything.

Yes, indeed - just check NX1/NX500 Hack video thread here.
You can push shadows far more, image is slightly more detailed in darker parts... I will not come back to 80Mbit anyway :-). Bad thing is that biggest difference is in 1080p modes but safest useable working bitrate has to be lower for them:
4K30p- 180Mbits, no issues (I have recorded more than 30 minutes timelapse with it), the highest bitrate I can safely use... but depends on the card
1080p60fps - 180Mbits - no dropped frames and really beautiful image BUT there are sometimes weirdly corrupted frames, so best bitrate for me for this mode is 140Mbits (I have not seen any issue so far, but I am not 100% sure)
1080p120fps - I have got some dropped frames even with 110Mbit so best would be obviously 100 Mbits but unfortunately there is no other free slot for custom bitrate: you can define you own bitrate for Pro and HQ but not for Normal (Vasile's bitrate hack 2.0).
In summary: each resolution has it own max. bitrate so right now if want to use 1080p120fps I had to turn of the BT OFF and restart camera. Then all bitrates modes return back to factory settings. I personally prefer quality so I will rather use only superb 4K180Mbps and 60fps1080p140Mbits instead of sometimes mediocre 120fps80Mbits.
I can see macroblocking very rarely and it almost completely disappears after conversion to 16-235 (I know that some will not agree with it - loosing full luma range 0-255 just in sake of removing remaining macroblocking).

I shot a couple of cinemagraphs with the NX1.
Sadly gifs crush the quality of the files and it looks like behance compresses them even more.
Any tips on that?
Here is a retouched fullHD frame:
DCI 4k
vivid picture profile
standard gamma
sharpness minimum, black level maximum, contrast -5
nikon 20mm f2.8

kidzrevil reacted to Andrew - EOSHD in NAB 2016 = Boring
Plenty of good gear at the show but Ed's right.
It's definitely the most boring NAB in recent memory.
Several major products cancelled and not a single interesting major new camera from the big manufacturers. Kinefinity Terra looks good but we needed new stuff from Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Blackmagic, even a surprise announcement from someone like Nikon, JVC or RED and didn't get it!!
I think the industry in general has reverted back to a boring pre-DSLR revolution focus on broadcast and high end production kit. Just look at Blackmagic!

Is there some way to only let Vasele, Otto and the other hackers post here... Then the rest of us can comment in the main thread?

kidzrevil reacted to SMGJohn in JPEG/MJPEG vs HEVC
Yes, Motion JPEG with high bitrate is far superior to HEVC and there is a Motion JPEG codec in the NX1 already for the 480p mode, Chant said he would look into it for me regarding the increase of resolution and possibly bitrate.
It was a good move by Samsung to include the Motion JPEG codec besides the HEVC

kidzrevil reacted to raf702 in Time to step up - Panasonic GH5 must go 6K Super 35mm to compete in 2016
Better colors, v-log
Better low light; noise free up to ISO 3200 or 6400
Better DR(14 stops)
10-bit 422 internal
I'd be in line to buy it with these specs.

Ahh, that's interesting. Yeah, I saw the hateful eight on film. it definitely wasn't sharpened digitally, and it definitely wasn't soft. Though I still feel I'm seeing sharpening in these nx cameras, I just suspect it's better sharpening than others. Or that it's such high res and sharp, the combo, you don't see the downsides of it until you punch way in

kidzrevil reacted to Marco Tecno in Petition for Samsung NX1 hack
the nx1 is a bit better than a6300 noise wise, even at iso 3200, in photo mode. There is something going on in video which destroys the output at high iso.

Thank you, still rocking the same settings I posted earlier, havent changed a thing! Im now very comfortable with these, and they are easy to work with =)

kidzrevil reacted to zerocool22 in Time to step up - Panasonic GH5 must go 6K Super 35mm to compete in 2016
Yeah im not bothered with the sensor size. I do want better color, At least 10bit, a hell of a better noise performance and more DR and RAW would be nice so I can choose to have the the image a lot softer for cinematic purposes, and sharp for travel video.

kidzrevil reacted to aldolega in Time to step up - Panasonic GH5 must go 6K Super 35mm to compete in 2016
It's disappointing that he has taken the oversized sensor off the table completely, but if they can eliminate the few compromises/shortcomings of the GH4, along with even a modest spec increase, and emphasize the usability and reliability of the camera they could still have a market share. Not everyone can/wants to deal with mega-jello or overheating or fleeting battery life.
Basically, just give us a GH4 with clean 1080/120, and 4K with no crop at >30p (even if it's only 36 or 48p). Improve low-light as much as possible, go down to 12MP if necessary, nobody complains about the a7S being 12MP. Get rolling shutter as low as you can- sub-20ms for 4K, 10-12ms or better for 1080p. You're not gonna make the GH4 big or pricey enough for CFast/XQD/SSD/etc, and UHS-II is still kinda pricey, so go to h265 so you can still use U3 SD. Or go to UHS-II and stick with h264. Either way you need to do 10-bit 4:2:2 internal, at 100-150 mbps for h265, or 200-250mbps or more for h264.

kidzrevil reacted to markr041 in James Miller deLUTS are awesome
You do not have to have a 4K-capable viewer to see the benefits of 4K. Viewed at 1080, 4K original footage quite easily has higher resolution, streamed or not. This erroneous point about needing to have 4K viewers to see 4K benefits seems to be made by people who want to rationalize why they have not made the investment in shooting 4K. And, no, I do not believe that resolution is the only thing or even the most important, but I am not in denial that the benefits of 4K are not visible unless you have some special "capability" to view 4K. It's not a joke, or a delusion unless you only shoot close ups of flowers where 3/4 of the frame is bokeh.

Yes, let´s talk about love...:)
I love to talk about looks, colors, grading etc. (far more than to talk about tech specs)
In comparison to the London impressions from above here a anamorphic test clip from cooke with a color palette that I really like:

kidzrevil reacted to Syme in Petition for Samsung NX1 hack
Yes, it could be impossible to turn off. The entire processing chain from sensor to H.265 bitstream could be done without any input from the software (except for selecting resolution and bitrate).
I would bet money that it is possible to turn off noise reduction, since Samsung would be more than a little bit crazy to do it like that. However without proof it is still possible however improbable it might be.

kidzrevil reacted to Dean in Petition for Samsung NX1 hack
I think that most everything they did with this camera was for their TV's.
Sharpening the image would be to give more of a WOW factor when watching home movies on their Samsung TV's. Being Samsung, I'm amazed that the NX1 is actually as good as it is. Most of what they do is pretty shite or else a sneaky copy of what Apple or some other company has already come up with. They are a shit company and they way they handle their camera business being a total failure is yet more proof.
The image does look overly sharp to me but still ... I love the camera.

There's an option in the menu turn NR off for photos. Wouldn't that be a starting point to figure out how to do it for video?

kidzrevil reacted to Andrew - EOSHD in Fuji X Pro 2 review - a Leica killer. Also a surprisingly capable Super 35mm cinema machine? Let's find out...
I don't agree with the people saying Fuji's colour is anything less than stunning.
In video mode the XPro 2 can compete with all of the below cameras for resolution and detail in 1080p, whilst giving far more pleasing colour and variation in tone out of the box. All shot on standard profiles. The others look like they have a veil over them.
If it looks too dark or crushed then it's your monitor that needs adjusting not the Fujifilm film simulation.
Also for stills I'd rather use the XPro 2 than any of the above. It's far more Leica-like and enjoyable during a shoot.
