Ok Thanks for all your advices. Gonna work with cine2/4 and cinema color... By the way kidzrevil really fan of what you achieve with the NX1 hack....

kidzrevil reacted to Mattias Burling in Lenses
You could probably sell it and buy a used Nikon version for the same price. That way you have aperture control on the NX1 as well as all future cameras no matter what mount.
And if you get the ND throttle you will have both aperture control and built in variable ND in the lens.

That is slog2/3. Color gamuts affect just the color response.
Try the cine modes with the cinema/pro color mode if you want to avoid noise but still have a gradable image.

The NX1 video frames do look a lot like still photographs, heres a few shots I took from 4k video - http://imgur.com/a/CCBXl - it is so outstanding how sharp the image is (please note this image has grading, still WIP, but its not raw image).
What I've realised too is, the camera handles bokeh differently between 4k video and 1080p video (or even photography), making it look like FF almost when in 4k.
You can make the footage look as filmic or digital as you want.
**The reason why theres very few actual good footage of the NX1 is due to the marketing structure. Many people bought it and use the kit lens and are amazed at the "out of focus background", this is a pro-sumer camera, that was marketed as a "bigger" higher end point n' shoot, besides its a very very new camera and system, very ew people actually risk going for it, considering lens selection and completely new system. Let me share with you a few great examples of how amazing this camera is :

Yeah it is an issue sometimes, but the A7s 1 & 2 are barely better. (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?303559-Measuring-rolling-shutter-put-a-number-on-this-issue! ) Which is why if you were to go Sony I would recommend the a7R 2. It has a great 1080p and 4K FF mode that gives decent RS performance. Or you can use the Super 35 4K for best image quality. Again most of all I would try these cameras, they are both very different ergonomics and menus than your Canon.

Cool, thx for the feedback. Looks they can work together for multicam shoots without too much post work.

I love my NX1, and you can get it and a 16-50s f2-2.8 + 50-150 2.8 lenses for under 3 grand total if you hunt for them. But low light is not the best, but may work well enough for you in documentary situations. RS is not good either. These may be deal breakers for you. The battery life is far, far superior to the Sony E line.
A7R 2 if you can afford it is a great option. (https://***URL not allowed***/sony-a7s-ii-vs-a7r-ii-test-which-one/) Good 4K and the best 4K RS performance for it's price if you use the full frame mode. RS on the a7s 2 is just as bad as the NX1.
You can still rent these from Lensrentals and give them a shot. I recommend renting a Sony camera and the NX1 with adapters for your Nikon glass and seeing which one you prefer. Spend $200 to make sure your spend $2000+ properly.

The ND throttle adapter as well.
Basically all Nikon adapters do.

Those editing get faster every year... by 2020 only robots will be able to watch anything that we produce... Just because the attention span is shortening doesn't mean we have to make everything faster and/or shorter. Well that being said I'm going back to watching some Kurosawa's movies... Great job anyway

kidzrevil reacted to Oliver Daniel in Calling all Sony users - share your whitebalance settings!
White balance on the A7 camera line doesn't work. No maters what you do, it's never right. Something in the image always has a compromise.
That said, I setup a custom white balance for every scene with the A7SII as the presets don't work at all, and very scene is very different. Normally there is a shift down to magenta to take out the ghastly green cast on skin tones. In post, I find myself having to dial out a blueish purple out of the shadows. Just the way it is.

Currently I shoot 16-235 in camera and edit directly in Premiere. No transcode. For web I output 4K Constant Bitrate at 100 mbps.

Your 24-70 lens WILL NOT match the resolving capabilities of the samsung lens. It just won't. The 24-70 will have been designed with an approximate 30lp/mm onto a full frame sensor.
full frame capability of the lens 30linesx2pairs x 36mm(sensor width) = 2160pixels (wide) optical resolution onto full frame
apsc capability of the lens 30x2pairs x 24mm = 1440pixels (wide) = not even full hd resolution
Add to this that the lens is marketed as a digital and film lens meaning it's not optimised for either, its a middle ground. It was also developed before 35mm sensors were any greater than 4mpx. It's old technology. Red strip or not, it aint a stellar lens by modern standards
The samsung will likely have been designed to 60lp/mm meaning for the same image area 60x2 x 24mm = 2880pixels wide. immediately the lens is delivering 2x the optical resolution onto the same image width, and 4x the optical resolution onto the total area - That's a big difference. The samsung will have been developed to cater to the 28mpx sensor of the nx1 - some of the most tightly packed pixels on any sensor yet. It'll also have been designed specifically to be APO corrected for the thickness of the sensor cover glass.
I'm not saying the A7R2 matches the overall res of the nx1 - it's clear the nx1 is doing great things. but when attempting such a test you should always use the same lens, or at the very least, if one camera is being used with a lens optimised for it, both lenses should are optimised for each camera.
I'm pretty certain that if you;d used the 55mm/1.8 on the a7r2 the results would be closer.

I feel the same. I would like to like Sony so much. Specs/$ is amazing but the result isnt.
BMD, Bolex, Canon and lately Nikon delivers the footage I want. So Im done trying. Ive had 8 different Sony cameras. Feels enough

kidzrevil reacted to TheRenaissanceMan in One Lens?
True...I had to return my first 25mm due to pretty bad decentering. It seems they've gotten better since then, but I'm guessing Cosina's QC is more consistent.
Then again, the SLR Magic is about half the price.

@kidzrevil, I just found out this short was shot on the Kinemini 4K with the Contax Zeiss AE 28mm f/2 and 50mm f/1.4 (and Aputure lights!), so there's a sample for you. Looks pretty high-resolving to me.

NX1, done! Althought there are a lot of very popular cameras on that list. Someone has to post it on dpr and/or other forums/social media, even if not "win" the poll, our votes matter for future consideration.

I don't even have to think it over - lately almost all my shooting is with the Nikkor 28-70 "beast". Lots of corporate stuff. Sharp wide open, great IQ, out of focus areas get a nice glow. Aperture ring and built like a tank. Wide open you can let it flare in high-key setups to get a nice softness with sharp details, or flag it off for deeper contrast. Very low distortion wide and the 70mm end is lovely. Takes a heck of a focus gear and generally needs a lens support, but very glad I have it. And kind of a steal used, they can be found under $1k, and since many of them had lame focus motors, you can find one needing the motor repair for a steal if you don't need the AF.
The only thing I miss with it is that 80mm Nikkor look for interviews, but having the zoom is really convenient for one-man corporate gigs - makes it much easier to get good framing in a tight office, and then you can grab your b-roll without swapping lenses.

Maybe try Artem! My go to guy for Russian lenses can be found here: http://www.ebay.com/usr/artemstore . Always a pleasure doing business with him. He has standard and occassional gems (as well as NOS (New old stock)/surplus). I always find myself going through his offers ever now and again. There's a couple of more stores like it in my favs. Zenit/KMZ/HELIOS/JUPITER/etc never disappoint on character.
Contax Yashica Zeiss, it has been said many times before, they have that Super Speed/Ultra Primes-touch. I wanted to go with Leica R as well, but you know... for a whole set you'll be spending pretty crazy money and a fair CY Zeiss set can be had for perhaps what one of your Milvus lenses goes for... just the 21mm f/2.8 is a very rare and expensive one... the 100mm f/2.8 is priced outside of the range of the others as well, the 25, 28, 35, 45, 85 and 135mm aren't actually that mad expensive. The 50mm -> f/1.4 would be the exception to the f/2.8. The 45mm is a bit of an oddball there, it's more of a pancake lens that kinda takes a slight hit on performance. But a very solid line-up otherwise. Not sure how they'd match with the NX1... but I take it there's enough people who've tested the particular combo.
I also 2nd the Ai-s! Especially the 28mm f/2.8. It's kind of a legendary one. Very sharp, hardly any distortion (sweet for landscape with D5300). I had gotten mine through: http://www.aclub.com/product-p/nik_28_2.8_mf.htm . They might give you a small discount if you ask nicely.

vintage Vivitar lenses (come in various lens mounts) have some pretty nice looks (its hit or miss though). I got a Vivitar 28mm f2 in c/y mount for about $30 that is has good contrast, but still pretty low contrast when it comes to modern lenses and surprising sharp wide open. Old russian lenses like the Mir and Helios (lomo may make some Still lenses too) but those are usually the most organic looking in general
