It would be ironic if this new GH5 was a more 'stills' oriented camera with a higher MP count and reduced video capability.

I spoke to a Panasonic Rep at NAB this year. The day before NAB Casey switched to the GH5 and talked about it in his vlog. The Panasonic rep told me that as soon as that video went up, their pre-orders on the GH5 went up 20%. That was in 24 hours back in April. I can't imagine the number of sales that have been done just from Casey since then.

Everyone is focusing on the red buttons, but look at these hard angles on the left rear of the camera. These lines do not conform to any current Panasonic camera. Not GH5 or G9. And the angles are no optical illusion, as they are clearly present in both images, even though the pictures are taken at different angles. It’s clearly a brand new model, not merely software.

That would be a step in the wrong direction from my point of view. The organic sensor that Panasonic has been developing has the ability to selectively change the sensitivity of individual pixels. This is a much better approach than merely cutting down light for the entire sensor by using an ND filter.
I would like to see some real innovation. I have NDs, as do I would wager most of the GH5 owners here. The assumption seems to be inferred that removing the mechanical shutter has no downsides. Well if the Sony A9 and A7RIII are examples, I can tell you that many have reported rolling shutter problems when using electronic shutter in place of mechanical. Also those cameras seem to suffer from defocus issues when using electronic shutter.

Also, YouTubers are low information buyers, thus stick with Canons

I could care less about labels. No camera to date has been perfect, so it is absolutely reasonable to desire something that checks more boxes. The current GH5 is a great camera. But we all know the GH6, 7 and 8 will be better still. If you can upgrade without breaking your budget... then why not?
Ask yourself this, would any manufacturer add features or enhancements if they believed no one would ever upgrade to the new and improved model? If we as consumers choose not to reward and recognize when companies innovate, then innovation will die.
If the GH5S... 0r whatever it’s called is substantiallly better than the current GH5, then I will buy it. Hell, I might buy two and put my old GH5 up for sale. I know many other will do likewise. I don’t shoot film to pay my bills. I just enjoy it as a creative release. I do it for the love of the art. If something I shoot gets likes or entertains, then that is payment enough for me.
People need to understand that just because a new model is released, does not mean that somehow the current model will be rendered incapable of shooting the images it did when you first bought it. Your old GH5 will still be every bit as good as the day you purchased it. If you choose to upgrade to the latest and greatest, then you are simply confirming that there was indeed room for improvement.
Personally, I hope the GH5S (or whatever the name) is amazing, and makes my current GH5 feel like a piece of junk. Because if it can do that, it’s gonna be a keeper... well, until the GH6

The original RED one was only rated at 9 stops maximum by DPs once it was out in the field....to talk about the GH5 with ONLY 12 stops, means that if it had 14 stops, that person would just have something else to complain about....oh wait....there is....the terrible AF??

Ok, I’m leaning towards a new camera as opposed to firmware. A second image has emerged that shows a red ring around the dial of the camera that Casey Neistat is using in the helicopter video. This would seem to confirm the earlier analysis of the frame grab from the video posted by @Neumann Films that seemed to show a red ring on the right dial. Since this red ring is Panasonics new design language to signify top tier cameras in the Lumix lineup this it stands to reason they would use it on this more expensive model.
Also there is another image of the front of the camera that seems to show s red letter below the model designation.
So why did the GH5 not get a red ring? Will future GH5 get the red ring?

You guys are talking about having 10 stops for grading down to a 6 or 7 stop rec709 delivery. And, yes,...that is perfectly OK.
But rec709 is now pretty old and wont last forever. In 5 years most TVs will easily display 10 stops or even much more. BT2020 and HDR will be very common and you will need to deliver in a bigger color space.
More dynamic range will be very "common" in the very near future. Even YouTube and Vimeo have HDR 10bit codecs going into homes now. Its at an early stage but its already happening on properly flagged HDR uploads.

For those that are happy with things as they are, great you are done upgrading. For myself I will take all the flexibility I can get. Would love clean lowlight. I’ll take 15 stops of DR. I have six hdr displays, so I’m sure I’ll be able to see a difference on one of them.
I for one am sick of reviewing footage only to find the image turned to mush or there was color noise in the shadows.

If what is real? We have 0 spec lol.
The fact that the sensor (a sensor for security cameras by the way, nobody said the GH5s will have that sensor) does 4K120p does not mean the camera will do 4K120p at all.
We have seen many many times capable sensor with a different output because of processing power or heat management.
So we have nothing on the GH5s appart that it will be more low light oriented.
But yeah if it does 4K120p with good AF and good lowlight, I am too getting one. If not then Sony will have my money with the A7SIII cause I am sure it will have A9 AF and FF is a bonus.

Much better low light. I m not going to sell my GH5 and loose money to buy a more expensive version for just 1 stop of usable ISO gain.
DR is already quite good on the GH5 for a M43 sensor. Of course if Pana comes with 12 bits, HDR and/or clean high frame rate that would be something to consider too but it's not the main factor for me. Finally, the price we'll be important too. Personally I don't believe in ground breaking AF feature.
But no matter what, if this rumor is true and Pana releases a new ground breaking version of the GH5 I'll would be very pissed. That would be such a dick move less than a year after the GH5 hit the store shelves. A camera like that doesn't show up in 6 months, manufacturers have long term road-map. Wait and see...

The thing that blows my mind is that no amount of money can buy you a small dslr sized camera, with a flip out screen, that shoots at least 4k at 60fps, and also takes stills... has good autofocus. I don’t care how much it costs. I need a SMALL dslr sized photo/ video hybrid with RELIABLE AF. It’s a HUGE need in the marketplace because of the YouTube revolution.
If the GH5s shoots 4k up to 60fps, and has reliable autofocus... I don’t care how much it costs, I NEED that tool for my job and there is literally not a single camera that fills that need right now.

At last, i bought used Voigtlander 17.5mm and 25mm, and shot a wedding with this two lens only on last Saturday. (except a few clips taken with 3rd cam 550D + Tokina 11-16mm).
Absolutely love the Voigtlanders over Sigma 18-35.
I decided to let go the Sigma 18-35mm. Even though it's sharper, but the images is flat, lack of the sense of space
....... yes, there's bokeh, but the subject is like flatten together with the bokeh background............
The wedding video i took with Voigtlanders: https://app.frame.io/f/08d54464-1d99-4b00-90b6-40720df62c3ez

Yeah the pre-ai and non-ai “K” lenses are great. The 50mm f/2 is one of the sharpest lenses I’ve ever used... along with the Minolta PG 50mm 1.4... great lenses. I ended up going ai-s because I prefer the shorter focus throw since I either focus by hand or use a lever. I guess if I used a proper follow focus, I may prefer a longer throw. And now as I am building my Nikkor set from scratch, I am trying to get the lenses that have 9 aperture blades. The 35mm 1.4 is an amazing lens. I shot these with it...
But the 9 bladed Nikkors are pricey for my humble finances. However I did find a little gem with 9 blades... the Nikkor 28-70mm D lens. It isn’t constant aperture but it’s cheap and sharp.

@kidzrevil I think you are definitely one of the people that could benefit from the extra 2 bits of color. So it may not be a bad idea at all.
I also have a feeling, according to @Neumann Films recent teaser post, that the GH5 may be getting something more... if it’s Raw video... then I may have to buy one too.
And if you go on eBay, Samy’s Camera, in LA, has some great prices on New Open Box models.
By benefit, I mean utilize.

Okay, my finding. Already REC709, 8bit HD mode is astonishing. GH5 is a beast. I´ve been saying that a few times now. So, here is my quick trailer of the short I shot. Shot in 8bit glory. Editing a film is a total different beast though. So I hope the mood of my trailer will transfer well into the final shortfilm. It´s low bitrate uplaod, grade is still a bit rough on the edges.. Still hope it can give an impression about my findings with this camera. I might put a PW to this. It will be boxcar then.

You have the Soligor 35-70 2.8-3.5 in your arsenal? If so, would you give it a run on your beautiful Canon RAW beauty? What are your lenses not many seem to want? I read the Canon 28mm F2.0 is a real stinker to be sold for around 50 dollars! You wanna sell that one?
Kidz, how can color rendering sound like anything?:) Just, teasin. You should give it a try. But please don´t give up that beautiful Panni. Not sayin Panny due to some amount of weirdness going along with that.
If that is a good reason to see you shoot more with the Fuji, yeah, wanna see that too. But don´t pay a fortune for these lense you have been praising so much for the last couple posts. I think the Veydras are expensive enough. Though a super bargain, of course

Yeah, I have the impression you enjoy the freedom of just shooting whatever YOU like and how you like to shoot it as well. That you're so kind to go 'well, I might as well share my experiences with others' is just a superb bonus for us folks. To start to cater for others in order to grow your channel would kinda be like betraying your own believes and interests, so I'd say: just stay true to yourself, then you'll enjoy it the most.

I got a review unit of the 7artisan 50mm f1.1 lens.
As a Leica-M mount its of course usable on Sony, Fuji, m4/3 and it covers full frame.
Is it the sharpest lens out there? Nope. Is it as expensive as f1.2-0.95 usually are? Definitely no.
For video users it might be interesting to know that the aperture has no clicks or steps (personally I would have wanted that).
The focus is super smooth. But also, has a nice throw. A lot of lenses these days have a 2m mark and then infinity. This has a 3, a 5 and an 8m mark. Which is very handy for zone focus as well as making video focus pulls easier.
I have only used it really quickly while I was picking up my lunch. So the the samples leaves a bit to be desired.
They are all from the X-t20 at f1.1 because.. you know.. why not
Remember to click the image twice to see how it really looks.
