The initial spark for it was to offer something for Android because there was (and still isn't) an official app from BM for it and also because the official one was iPad only which, again, didn't strike me as ideal form factor wise.
I still hold that view but as its developed quite a lot functionality wise during its evolution from being just an Android alternative then, perhaps, it might be something I would do if there is enough demand.
To be honest though, I still regard it as being something that I would view as running on a dedicated low cost Android device such as this one rather than "wasting" something more expensive on it like an iPhone
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/SIM-Free-Unlocked-Smartphones-,MTK6580-ShaQx/dp/B07KT9KM8Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1551731135
I agree regarding some aspects of the Android experience being less than enthralling (whilst acknowledging that iOS has its moments as well) but for something like this I'd view it as being a dedicated single function device that just happens to have Android underneath it.
The way to look at is if I didn't say it was an app but said would you like a touch screen bluetooth remote control device for your Pocket4K with an all day rechargeable battery for a total cost £55 then it would seem a different proposition
The upside to having it on Android is it makes it easier to accommodate other enhancements to it such as live view integration but also offers a future option to run it on small single board computers that can be put in more pro film making housings.

Version 1.2 will be released on Wednesday and includes a new mode for supporting for the Blackberry Key1/2 phones.
It might seem a quirky device to support but the combination of touch screen and physical keyboard is actually very nice in terms of controlling the camera.
Aside from being able to control the functions from the screen, the functions are also mapped to the physical keys on the phone and the rubber backing of the phone makes it more comfortable to hold.
When running 3C on the Key1/2 it defaults to portrait mode to make for more ergonomic one hand operation and/or narrower profile for mounting on a rig or gimbal handle.

    Well, here we are then.

The 3C app is now officially available from the Play store for Android devices.
3C enables you to remotely control and monitor the primary functions of your Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K from an Android device using Bluetooth LE.

Using 3C, you have access to the following camera functionality.

    Aperture
    ISO
    Shutter Angle
    White Balance
    Record
Focus & Zoom (with compatible lenses)

With 3C you can also store your own custom setting sets for exposure, focus and zoom parameters for later recall as well as automate transitions between stored focus points*.

For ease of use, 3C uses a single screen touch interface to control all of this functionality and avoid the need for you to have to activate any sub-menus to change settings.

3C has a scalable user interface to enable you to remove focus and zoom controls from the screen should you not require them and wish to run the app on a small screen Android device.
In addition, 3C can also be used as an interface hub to enable control of the camera from compatible Bluetooth gamepads.
You can purchase 3C from the Play store here http://tinyurl.com/y5eyujeu
You can read the PDF user guide here User Guide For 3C v1.1 by CDA-TEK Ltd .pdf
You can use gamepads from iPega and 8Bitdo that support keyboard mode and examples of these are https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KA6OR7Q (iPega) and https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B017PAX036 (8Bitdo).
3C will also support wireless live viewing from the camera in a future update with additional hardware.

This video was filmed with the PK4 in cDNG, and a Mavic Pro Drone. To me the gap had changed so much to me at least it is hard to tell the difference between the PK4 and the Drone. And this is a pretty damn good video. I like the look of it.  And I am not knocking the PK4. 4K is pretty much 4K no matter the camera if you are good at editing, Grading, Sure there is a difference between the PK4 and the Drone. But it is not huge anymore like it use to be.  Good for everyone.

I agree.  Having the tech just work and get out of the way is the ultimate situation.  We're making art after all, the last thing we need is to be trying to also deal with the technical stuff at the same time.
I really think that BM are playing the long game and have set their vision to be really high and are making bold steps to get there.
    Some fun facts (via wikipedia?
DaVinci had been making colour correction systems since 1985 Resolve was released in 2004 BM bought DaVinci in 2009, at which time Resolve was selling with dedicated hardware solutions for $200k-800k 2010 they released a software-only version for $995 and the hardware version dropped to $30k 2011 they introduced a free version 2013 version 10 introduced video editing 2014 version 11 introduced audio mixing to complete it as a stand-alone NLE 2016 BM buys Fairlight and version 14 includes an integrated version of it 2018 version 15 includes a version of Fusion That is a pretty spectacular timeline.  In a decade it went from being $200-800K with hardware and colour only to having free, software-only versions available, and integrating world-leading colour with editing, audio, and VFX functionality.
Hardware is obviously more difficult to make those kinds of advances on, but the original BMPCC and now P4K kind of fit that description.  I remember Elon Musk talking about reducing the cost of things by 90% and that idea of radical change seems to also be occurring here.  Other vendors don't seem to really be dancing to the same tune.

I think what he’s saying is that you can answer your own question by going out and making films.
And if you’re desperate enough to make them, you could always set your camera on a tripod and film yourself as an actor.
I’m sure your local church or library has some kind of bulletin board where you can post a casting notice. Build your films around what you have... for instance... don’t write an urban film if you live in a rural community.
Make One Minute films that you can put up on Instagram.
    To sound a little cliche... if there’s a will, there’s a way.
However, it’s up to you and nobody on this site can help you build people skills. But if you are unabashedly yourself, then what more do you need?
Zach, I know how much you want to make films. I remember you posting similar threads 4 or 5 years ago. And I know about priorities in life. And I know making films is insanely difficult. But ask yourself... what can you do this week or today with a half hour of time that will prepare you to make that movie during your spring break?
I’m glad to hear you’re still using your t2i and FD lenses. I ended up buying a modified FD 50mm 1.4 that I adore on my 5D3.
So with that being said, go back and look at what Kendy Ty did with his t2i and a single lens and a single character.

We write the file headers/close the file every 5 secs during record, our cameras since the BMCC have always periodically written the headers/closed the file so at most if you lose power you might lose the last 5 secs of the clip. If you lose power before 5 secs of recording, then it could be an issue.

Thanks Mr. Jones! As I’ve said a couple dozen times, what you accomplished in The Luggage with a 7D and sheer will (not to mention talent) has been very inspiring to me.
But I’m actually not that close to finishing. Scheduling and finances has been way more of a problem than I anticipated. This mock-up is a one off that I am toying with. I have a final round of casting and I am putting together a teaser to help get some actors.
I also don’t love the graphic design of that shot but I do appreciate that you get the SOS element as that is pretty important.
I will probably end up doing some type of animated graphic for the opening title shot that appears as the water ripples out to sea and I may have the SOS stay a little longer or appear first. Good idea for the Universal Yellow. The story is pretty dark, so some sort of dark red may work better but yes, I get what you’re getting at.
It’s funny you mention the 28mm FOV. Until recently, I’ve only had slow 28mm lenses and when I got that fast Canon 28, it opened up my whole world visually. Wide angle close ups denote such an interesting feeling and in FF, I can go handheld with it... which is a big plus for my run and gun style.
You don’t know how many times I’ve toyed with making my film B&W...

For the sake of the discussion, the top 3 were shot with the Canon 24-70mm f/4 and the last shot was with the Canon 28mm 1.8.
Hahahahaha.... that is actually what the font was called. I went with it because it looked like writing and I liked that it looked aged or weathered. But yes I agree... it’s not right.

    Hello everybody!

So, I've attended the Blackmagic Raw seminar held at CVP here in London yesterday and I thought I'd share some impressions:
Let's start with the bad news first: unfortunately there is no official release date for BRAW on the PCC4K yet.. They confirmed it is coming to the camera 100% but they want to make absolutely sure that the update is safe and won't brick the camera (which sounds like a sensible plan indeed!) ?
That been said I can't wait to have the option to use BRAW, it's such a clever and well implemented solution and i reckon it will be the best choice on the PCC4K for 90% of the occasions. What really impressed me is how good the performance is in Resolve compared to CNDG, it is entirely possile to edit BRAW on a laptop without creating optimised media and/or dropping the resolution. To drive the point home even more they worked on a grading project that was hosted on a USB 3.0 spinning drive and it worked flawlessly, i was quite shocked when I saw a clip with a speed ramp set in optical flow playing at 24fps at full quality on an entry level MBP!
Another super clever feature of BRAW is the ability to shoot with any dynamic range preset and being able to revert back to film mode afterwards, that is pretty awesome for dailies or things like that.
I also very appreciated the fact that they were totally sincere in showing us the difference in visual quality between BRAW and CDNG and, although there is a slight difference in quality with CDNG being a bit sharper, said difference is only visible in extreme magnification (pixel peeping basically) so in real life BRAW is perfectly adequate especially considering the many advantages it offers in terms of workflow. The Blackmagic guys reckoned that CDNG would be the best choice only in very specific situations where having the best quality possible is paramount (like VFX for istance).
Overall it's been a very interesting demonstration and i think BRAW will make the PCC4K even better value for money, exciting times ahead!

    Two things:
    1. I have about a dozen of the 256GB SD cards from a couple of different brands. The 256GB cards perform as good as, or better than, the 128GB cards, so there should not be an issue with your client purchasing the 256 cards instead of the 128 cards. According to testing in the GH5, the avg. write speed for the Sandisk Extreme Pro SD card is 40MB/s on the 256 and 38.8 on the 128. These cards are V30 cards.
    2. I know that people on here have had good luck recording various formats on the P4K with the Sandisk Extreme Pro SD cards, but given the data rates in the camera specs, you will likely have to use the CFast cards or external SSDs to record at some of the highest resolution/bit rates.
I just made a few recordings on my P4K using the Sandisk Extreme Pro 128GB V30 card.
Cinema DNG Lossless 4K DCI -- the recording stopped after 3 seconds Cinema DNG 3:1 4K DCI -- the recording stopped after 6 seconds.  Cinema DNG 4:1 4K DCI -- the recording stopped after 21 seconds. Cinema DNG 4:1 UHD -- the recording stopped after 42 seconds ProRes 422 HQ 4K DCI -- the recording stopped after 16 seconds. **ProRes 422 4K DCI -- the recording lasted 26:27:13 and filled the entire card. So, you may be able to record ProRes 422 on your card too. According to the specs, even V90 cards should not be able to record the highest resolution/bit rates. We use the T5 1TB disks and have not had any trouble recording to them. Best of luck!
