This post is a little bit pointless.

It doesn't matter what camera you use, as long as it suits you, looks good and gets the job done. If you buy a camera for status then you are not a filmmaker.

A camera does not operate you. You operate the camera. So when that comes to the GH4, it is very capable in the right hands.

The Panasonic GH4 is $1699 and available here at B&H Photo Video
Today only - tune into the B&H Studio GH4 live broadcast here (starting 1PM EDT)

The Panasonic GH4, is it a cinematic monster or a wimpy video camera?

It's a monster. Even compared to the full frame 14bit raw from the 5D Mark III the GH4 holds its own. It represents a big return to form for Panasonic, a consumer camera that pushes way beyond the image provided by the GH3 and AF100. As a 4K camera never has the format been so practical to shoot as it is with the GH4. With file sizes 8x less than on the nearest competitor and a price 5x less expensive than the Canon 1D C, the GH4 is the most exciting camera I have ever shot with at EOSHD.

Daniel Acuña reacted to Andrew Reid in Vimeo to automatically mute videos with 'unlicensed' soundtracks
    Have you seen this?

    vimeo.com/blog/post:626

Essentially Copyright Match works like on YouTube where commercial music is matched to a database and flagged automatically. On YouTube the video is not removed, instead a link to buy the music or advertising is added under the player.

On Vimeo the match results in the user being marched off to an 'appeals process' where he must prove he has the valid license for the sound track in use, or that the video consitites 'fair use'. There are no hard and fast rules for what constitutes fair use.

Personally as an artist who likes to mix my cinematography with the best possible music, I see this as severely limiting my artistic freedom. I also see my personal work on Vimeo as purely artistic and not in any way 'for profit'. They are part of EOSHD's editorial but a completely separate entity to any part of the blog which makes money such as the Shooter's Guides and I don't run any advertising.

This decision by Vimeo means I will seriously have to consider removing 90% of my artistic work from Vimeo and placing it only on my local hard drive offline.

Copyright issues on the internet are universally dealt with by DMCA takedown notices and where money is involved, for example where someone is blatantly making money off the back of somebody's else's music in their commercial wedding videos, the issues is dealt with through the legal system.

I don't see why Vimeo need to get involved at all.

I also don't like how a company seemingly has the final say in what artistic expression I am allowed to make.

Also for those who use The Music Bed, the problem doesn't go away. Vimeo will still Copyright Match tracks on there. All music, at the end of the day, is copyright material. So everyone whether they have a license or not will have to go through the appeals process and risk the appeals people at Vimeo disagreeing.

Say goodbye to your Vimeo portfolio? Personally I am seriously considering moving out to YouTube or an alternative site. I didn't sign up to this shit!

And I think Daniel is talking about a 50mm and 85mm equivalent. Your 25mm should be fine for portraits but I would second the zoom lens. ND is essential. Try and use it for everything outside instead of increasing shutter speed. Your shutter speed should stay approximately double your frame rate. So if you shoot 24p then shutter at 1/50.

Also, I don't see why you need three shoulder rigs, especially if you value traveling light. Personally I would just stick to your pocket rig and maybe think about something like a Zacuto Z-Finder Jr instead of that dot-line. But yeah, I would say prioritize a zoom lens above all. A kit 14-140 is relatively inexpensive, especially the old f4-5.8 version. It's not the best piece of glass in the world but I think you'll appreciate the versatility. Just stick to the 25mm inside.

And yeah if money is a concern I would put the lens above the go pro but that's just me.

superb full set of prime (full frame) lenses so can be used on Canon 5D, RED EPIC , GH4 , GH3, G6 Sony A7, BLACKMAGIC CINEMA CAMERA , BMPCC ETC WITH METAL LENS HOODS AND CAPS
Yashica ML primes are some of the most sought-after vintage manual focus lenses.
widely regarded as Carl Zeiss Distagon Equivilants the Yashica ML prime lenses are superb for Cinematography.
The ML series was the pro line of Multicoated lenses developed and produced by Yashica (Kyocera), to sit between their consumer grade DSB line and the state-of-the-art Zeiss T* within the Contax / Yashica system.
According to 'Lens Doctor' Eddie Houston, these lenses were the 'L-series of the era'
Being 35mm format lenses, they cover Full Frame (Canon 5D, 1D, 6D etc.)
They perform extremely well even at wide open aperture when used on a 'crop frame' system.

180+ degree focus throw allows for accurate control - ideal for cinematography use with a Follow Focus kit.
    Included here are:

these lenses are full metal casings - no cheap plastic like kit lenses.
all have full metal lens hoods added - these just screw on the front and help stop lens flare - and large lens caps for the front hoods (see pics)
rear lens caps are also included

The set comes in a aluminium flight case

See, story telling, is like all other aspects of film-making, Whereas, a Film School can ONLY make a film school student of person, and actual, hands-on field work, will make a cinematographer, writer etc etc, of you, the way to go about with it, to to meet people with ideas, stories, narration styles etc etc. For me, apart from people, I get inspiration, from watching short films, and reading works of prolific writers like Roald Dahl and Jeffrey Archer. These two really nail the precise amount of narration (material, as well as style) necessary, in a short story (the things needed to write for a short film).

Read lots of short stories, and when you start feeling that you have got the length necessary to write a 10-15 short film, you have hit the nail on the head. After that, have it reviewed by someone who writes lots of short stories (such as yours truly). I could send you one of 2 short stories, if you promise not to share them. :)

Not a pleasing price but I think it is unique enough for me to still want it, for low light, full frame, to sell my A7R and replace it with this just to get rid of AVCHD is worth the extra! 4K in future to Shogun a pretty big bonus in my view.

GH4 still the one to get overall in the here and now... it is simply better featured for video.

Jason, I'm not trying to pick on you here... but for a few years now you've posted here on EOSHD, dvxuser, cinema 5d and I don't know where else purely on one subject matter... and that has been an absolutely obsessive compulsive whirlwind of posts on which camera to get and which is most "filmic". This has gone on for years now.

You bought the 60D, was too soft.. wanted the GH3, it was too much like "video", bought the 5D, and have made endless posts commenting on how the 5D with raw blows the socks off everything out there. Am I right in saying that you never actually even tried 5d raw? Then you say the GH4 is too much like video and much prefer the 5D image... but you're now wanting to sell the 5D to buy something else? This is absolutely crazy. You're a novice with an ultra expensive toy, who just isn't satisfied with image quality.

If you were spending endless hours filming and doing tests and actually using your camera, then at least there would be some reason to the madness. But the only video you've uploaded is a handheld point and shoot clip of the 5D that shows no understanding of filming or photography. You've been too busy obsessing with which is the best camera to get. The truth is that no matter the camera you buy, your videos will look horrible. Why? Because all of your energy is focussed purely on comparison without actually shooting or trying things for yourself. You're just judging the uploads of others.

Myself and many others have been very tactful in telling you how to get your "film look", but you insist on believing otherwise. Are your friends not tired of seeing the endless camera comparisons you're showing them. Don't they ever ask to see some work you've done? Stop stating with such confidence how things are, and which camera produces the better image. Start being less opinionated on both cameras and the "hollywood look" as you've referred to it as - and start actually learning some real technique from this forum. You have a great camera. Stop wasting your time, read the manual and start using it already. This forum has a wealth of knowledge that no film school could offer. Use it. And please stop wasting your money on endless camera body upgrades. The A7s won't be perfect either, no camera ever will.

I'm sorry if this has come across aggressively, but just look over the last couple of years of posts you've made reiterating the same obsession, without having actually gotten your hands dirty. Please, for your own sake start focussing on something else. ( i.e: focus on shooting rather than which camera is best )

    Great work by Kendy!

I see that many of his shots have bokeh, so the equipment does matter to some extent.  It would be interesting to see what he could do creatively with a small sensor camcorder.

I read that he does not use lighting, only ambient.  If the scene is dark, he says it adds to the mood, and that lighting would only make it look "fake".

He uses no tripod or Steadycam.

He doesn't use external audio gear, just "in camera" with a Rode mic.

He uses After Effects to edit and grade, and he does it himself.

He created his own camera picture style, which he sells on his website for 9 Euros.

    He has no crew.

    He has no budget.

He is self taught, and only starting filming a few years ago.

If this doesn't prove that you can create great things with minimal gear, and no budget, I don't know what will.  It's very inspirational.

I also heard the Yashica lenses are really great for video they where made in the same factory than the zeiss lenses. Would you recommend them?

I am planning on buying the GH4 but the only thing that is keeping me for buying it, is the crop factor, and getting a shallow depth of field is harder and it needs faster lenses like the 25/0.95 from Voigtlander which costs 1100 euros. So I am not really sure what to buy.

jurgen => thanks for the advice  ;) And yes trust me I am very aware of that, it's not the camera but the guy behind the camera that makes it good. Its just that I really want the best thing possible for my money, that's all. I mean if i have the money, why not? And when I say I am new in the DSLR world is just that I don't personally own one but I use them very often for filmmaking but my knowledge is very limited I only know the 5D mark III and the 60D and some canon still lenses, I wanted to have a good advice on from people with more experience on what to buy, and I am glad because I have a very different perspective now.  :)

I just feel that the GH4 is a game changer, plus it's not really expensive considering the specs and it has many features that no other camera in this price range has.

I have actually been working with other peoples cameras and lenses, not worrying to much about technical stuff, I have always been more of a storyteller, focusing on writing a script and directing actors. But I do want my own equipment, and increase my knowledge on cinematography which, I think, every aspiring film maker should do, because he can use it to better tell a story, obviously cinematography is at the service of the story. So that's why I want something versatile and capable of doing many things like the GH4.

There aren't multiple versions of the 85mm and 35mm T1.5 lenses as far as I know (there is a new 35mm Canon AE f/1.4 though, probably there'll be a Samyang AE 35mm T1.5 soon - this has electronic aperture control on Canon-bodies).

It's really sad to see people saying that a movie is bad just because it doesn't respect linearity like most movies do now a days. Come on, open your eyes, Cinema and filmmaking is much more than that ! Every one chooses to do what ever they want to do in terms of editing, obviously keeping in mind that in has to be in service of the story and has to be well made and to have a purpose , not just because it looks cool. I personally think that the non-linearity in this movie is a good choice and is justified (showing for exemple the passage of time etc...) and it's really well made.
Look at some amazing movies with non-linearity like the Tree of Life by Terrence Malick or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry and there are so many more...
Imagine if everyone was like Kurth... Cinema is about experimenting with what we have, its about trying and founding something new. So Kurth please look at the bigger picture here, because you are missing a lot of things.

To me the editing is wonderful, I don't know what kurth was getting at, possibly a bit confused? The segments with the yellow straps and the photograph are clearly intercut with him smoking his cigarette in a non-linear way. They're not supposed to be continuous, so continuity isn't really an issue, they're not action-matches.
