  1. Oh damn. Gonna come at you with this: Not crushed at all on my P3 monitor. But I can tell a difference in black levels on your logo and the background (scaled box clearly visible in full screen... hard to spot on this screenshot tho). I say don't listen about the suit, but get that logo sorted :glasses:

Also, hey look it's Mount Bonnell. How'd you get it so empty?

I suppose not, but they are calling it AVC-Ultra, which is not the same codec used in the GH5. I'd highly doubt it's the GH5 codec for two reasons:

    1. The codec in the GH5 was brand new, not the same one shared with the larger varicams.

    2. The Lumix team and Varicam teams HATE each other, and rarely share anything with each other.

Fair enough. Hadn't seen it called AVC-Ultra anywhere.

Didn't know that about varicam and lumix teams. The reason I was concerned is that they put the same codec as the GH4 in the DVX200, and it's closer to that price bracket than any Varicam camera. It's also interesting that they're announcing this camera around the time of that codecs release.

Where did you see info about Sony releasing a full frame cinema camera?

So, am I the only one that thinks that maybe this 5.7K Raw output was an afterthought? Why have plans to output 5.7K Raw when it isn't outputting any Raw at release? Give use some 2K Raw up to 72/96 FPS.

Did Panasonic's VP of their cinema division hear Canon's 4K Raw specs and immediately call the CEO of Atomos?

Yeah, maybe. But who cares? Glorious competition.

Is the official price under 8k then? 7995.00?

Well, to be fair the Canon will probably have their updates out before the this camera is even in officially released. C200 comes out tomorrow or something?

Im really curious about the color and how clean the 240p is.

Their updates still won't provide 10 bit. The whole reason the updates aren't in camera yet is because they're reengineering the c300mk2 codec to be 8 bit. It's preposterous that even on output there's no way to get a 10 bit image out of that camera that isn't 1000mbps raw.

Are you sure GH5 has no iso200 for video? Iso400 would be too noisy and very odd too.

Is the GH5 showing all exposure values when using video modes A,S,P and auto iso. Can you check? it takes few seconds.

This is probably just the base ISO for V-Log

  6. Mine came in last night. 1tb HD, 2.9ghz CPU, 460 GPU

Only bug I've encountered was an annoying thing with the touch bar where the volume slider wouldn't come up. That required a restart to fix. Pretty much confirms my concern about the potential for touch bar to wig out. What happens when escape won't work when you want to force quit? I've defaulted these keys to their standard control strip functions for now anyways, with fn key to pull up app specific commands. These app commands are cool but not exactly revolutionary.

Keyboard takes getting used to but don't think it will bother me after long. Main annoyance is just that escape key. I wish it was a real key. I use it while editing and on top of not being able to feel it anymore, they've slid it inward a bit so it's not where your muscle memory would have you think. The larger trackpad is nice but can present a challenge while typing because my standard resting position for my hands puts my wrists squarely on the trackpad. Seems like they have the finger detection pretty well in tune because I'm not actually ever accidentally moving the cursor with my palms, but it still seems weird resting them on the trackpad while I type.

Other than the one time the volume slider was weird I haven't encountered any big red flags. I was able to get Adobe Suite CS6 installed after jumping through some hoops and everything is running smooth. No problems cutting in Premiere or encoding with Media Encoder so far. None of the crazy haywire graphics thing. Will report back when I have my monitor in and test further with that, as I believe other graphics card issues popped up when driving a monitor. It also required jumping through some hoops in order to instal the ProRes codecs I walk around with because they've locked down changes in the System folder (I think this was true on OS 10.11 too).

I've been hanging onto a 2012 MBP with DVD drive for a while and thin as this is it doesn't feel particularly lighter. This just reaffirms my wish that they'd made it a bit thicker to put beefier battery and graphics under the hood. Also. Like. Card reader. WTF.

All of that said, it's fast, it's quiet (fans, not this effing keyboard), it looks great (space grey all the way), I can see where the universal plug thing will be great one day in like two years (plugging in power from either side is def nice but still maybe not worth the tradeoff of no MagSafe), and I've been able to work with 4K H264 footage natively without any problems.

Time will tell if this is the actual fix or not, but would be great to hear that it is software-based. Always good to wait, rather than be an early adopter, but some of us don't have the luxury to wait a whole year. I'd wait until the next model if I could, instead of getting the first one out of the gate on the refresh, but I need a powerful new laptop pronto, and have other reservations about settling for the 2015. Hopefully they work out these kinks sooner rather than later. Definitely not making a purchase until they do.

  8. Also you can apply the LOG LUT in the transcode, then you get the LOG ProRes as if it has come straight from the camera as LOG.

I prefer to edit ProRes to H.264. 4K bogs down too much in H.264 on my Macbook Pro.

What would be the workflow for this? Is there a way to do it in media encoder or would you have to use resolve?

  9. I personally couldn't really see any difference in the image neither in my 24mm test, nor the video in the link above, not in sharpness, contrast, vignetting, color, they have the same optical quality. The only difference in the image is that the Cinema lenses have more iris blades (11) which results in more rounded out of focus areas, but that has nothing to do with optics. I have no proof of it but I strongly believe the CN-E lenses are rehoused Canon L primes, which isn't a bad thing, when you couple the fantastic L quality with high-end cinema construction and mechanics, you have one of the best sets of lenses ever made. If I ever choose to invest in a set of primes, these will be the ones, they're just beautiful. Their Cine zooms however don't have photographic equivalents, and are even built from the ground up to cover motion picture frame of s35, whilst the cine primes cover the photographic full frame area like the L primes.

Really? I felt the difference in contrast and color was rather apparent. Check 1:25, 1:35, and 3:20 again. The cine primes hold the hot spots on the windows way better, particularly when they blow-out to bokeh, and same on the faces. Although I think at 3:20 her makeup is really helping diffuse hotspots on her face, where as he might not have any powder. Regardless, far from a rehoused L, I think.

  10. Here's one:

I've maybe seen a couple more but there's a lot more doc stuff.

    like this:

    and this:

Of course there's TONS of tests by DPs with actors and various grades, etc. I think it's still a little early for a lot of narrative stuff. Given time you'll see more.
