Anything with a Intel Core i7-8750H and NVIDIA 1060 works fine.
If Resolve is important get a laptop with a 1070 or even 1080 instead, 8GB of GPU memory are necessary.
16GB of system RAM is the bare minimum. If compositing is done in 4K, 32GB is the minimum RAM capacity.
Many laptops nowadays have at least 1080p IPS screens with almost or even full sRGB coverage. Perfectly fine, even for grading after calibration.

Not as yet, there is a very informative thread here from @Don Kotlos that I'm going to re-visit.
I'm hoping he can chime in and give us a steer on what the current best bang for the buck is.
I probably should have got into this earlier as the price of graphics cards has gone ridiculous due to people hoovering them up for Bitcoin mining.
I'm wondering whether something like this Gigabyte AORUS all in one solution might be the path of least resistance to get going for me. Seems a bit cheaper than a separate solution as well but I'm sure there are some caveats that @Don Kotlos can fill us in on.

Neither of those are good choices due to massive throttling of their GPUs. Get a portable gaming laptop. Reddit is a good non-biased source to use to find the right one.

deezid reacted to BTM_Pix in My LUMIX Hardware Controller Is Complete
As someone less than politely pointed out on the other thread, I appear to have been a bit of a lazy arse in the almost 12 months since I tripped over and found the Cinelike d thing.
You may recall it happened because I was researching making a hardware controller and after several iterations, here it finally is.

And yes, it does look rather like a calculator doesn't it?
The different iterations (including an Android app at one point!) have been in pursuit of making something small, standalone, self powered, fast connecting, push buttons and with an integrated screen at a lowish cost and, well, here we are.
Here is the finished spec and features :
Compatible with all Panasonic Lumix cameras that can be controlled by wifi Integrated USB rechargeable battery Full colour screen 20 keys with 3 bank switch keys giving 60 direct switch operations of functions Control of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction. Automatic unlocking of Cinelike D and Cinelike V on GX80/85, LX10/15 and TZ10 Control of manual focus in fine and coarse steps  Control of One Shot AF Control of Record Stop/Start Store and Recall 8 focus points 4 selectable transition speeds between focus points Store and Recall 8 setup presets (each consisting of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction) Presets are stored in non-volatile memory so are available in any session. Boot time to camera connection and control under 2 seconds. Wifi control range tested to 20m. Optional accessories :
Interface module to support Nintendo Nunchuck controller for manual focus control (native lenses and adapted lenses with smart adapters) and zoom (integrated lens cameras and power zoom lenses only) Wireless interface module to sync remote record and stop on supported Tascam, Zoom and SoundDevices audio recorders.  The controller fits a regular cheap cellphone to threaded adapter holder so as well as being used handheld it can be mounted to anything you have a need for with the right attachment so could be on a cage or a gimbal or whatever.

I'm going to be doing some more testing of it in anger in the next couple of weeks and I'll put up a video of it in action then.
So, I have been a bit less lazy than first imagined
By the by, the controller has both wifi and bluetooth so it begs the question would anyone be interested in a version of it for the Pocket 4K ??

    Indeed.
I guess I was trying to say, it’s not really what I agree with or want, but I can seperate my personal views about what is pragmatic and practical and understand why a company makes these kinds of choices. Because they also need to be viable as a business as well.
What I want from a camera is not what most of the users of this forum want and is likely to result in a camera that would fail commercially.  So who cares what I want !
I’m not against choice, but I’ve also had the SAME conversations with the people that can make this stuff happen. I’m just paraphrasing the answers to the questions I’ve already asked long ago from those that do the making.
I have to say it’s really disheartening to see people shooting off about trying to work around and defeat IP. Even if you’re philosophically OK with trying to do that, you know that if Sony’s lawyers come knocking I’m pretty sure you’d feel different.  Not to mention the fact that they are an important vendor for someone making a camera.  The make a lot of components from the sensor down.... Would you REALLY want to jeapordise a new product that you’ve invested millions on R&D into only to have the company that potentially make your sensor yank it because you’re trying to circumvent their IP on a lens mount ?
And then seeing engineering challenges claimed that are easy and cheap without any true understanding of what they’re claiming is possible.
I’ve been a part of these conversations already.  I’ve already asked most of the same questions that then get asked here.  The same things get kicked around by R&D and product managers.  They already have done the numbers on most of these things and I think BMD have shown more than anyone, if they can make something, they will, they have zero fear of market segmentation or protectionism of product class. But it does have to be profitable and enough people that will want it.

deezid reacted to BTM_Pix in Now Ronin-S has a follow focus for GH5.. and my thoughts about it
The ND filter is just an additional add on to the main controller though.
The controller does remote focus with 8 stored points with dedicated keys for recall at 4 different transition speeds or manually controlled with a joystick.
All wireless to the camera so it will work on any gimbal with the GH5 or any other Panasonic camera.
The only reason it isn't ready to buy today is that I'm waiting for the Pocket 4K to port it to that so people can use it on multiple different cameras.
I've got a way of adapting a traditional wheel and its eminently doable at a reasonable-ish price but I suppose the question is how much would you actually pay for something like that?

Have you tried Resolve 15 Public Beta? It is slowly becoming more and more like Premiere in terms of the editing interface and features, but without the performance issues.
    I am highly impressed.
The purpose of editing is to trim the fat.
Why not start doing some editing and remove those files from the project that you no longer need.

If the NX1 was that great then Samsung would not have canned it. Bottom line, more of us choose to either ditch it, or not adopt it in the first place. Samsung had the money to keep it going for the next few hundred years. They made the choice not to. For most of us, that speaks volumes.
I get the feeling these post are created so people holding these cameras can unload them on eBay for more money. Just like that hoax thread about the superdooper third party firmware.

I heard that, and I'm thrilled about that (I ended up shooting VLog bursts at a stills shoot)
I'm also terrified that they may have altered the color science to match the S.
I'm going to do a measurement pre and post to confirm or deny whether this is the case.

What I'm able to do is precisely match the LogC format, and add a rich neutral starting point (EC). Its true though, that there is a lot that goes into the magic of a cinematic image. I've seen some visually terrible Alexa films shared on forums; those were funny and eye-opening, because they reveal that the Alexa can only do so much for a production. I think its likely they effectively had no color backend, which the EC component addresses. Though all the factors come together to make a great image -
    The great DP, who
    - Uses great organic lenses
    - Frames well (with motion)
    - Lights beautifully
Costume and Set Designers (with a budget), who
    - Coordinate the color palette in concert with the story atmosphere, and the colorist's intention
    And a great Colorist, who
    - Carefully balances (with restraint and good taste) all shots with each other
    - In service of a singular atmospheric concept for the scene
I do think these are very attainable. And when a production is in motion, its really pretty cool what will result as they all come together.

With the OLPF side-by-side, you can really dial it in to get the Alexa aesthetic - here are new settings that are even better than the previous for the single node approach:
