Santiago de la Rosa reacted to Juan Melara in A better way to grade Ursa Mini CinemaDNGs
    Hey all,
I've just finished up a new grading tutorial especially for any of you shooting CinemaDNGs. It actually works with any CinemaDNG, not just limited to Blackmagic cameras.
In the tutorial I show you how get access to the full dynamic range, richer colours throughout the full range, and all in a curve thats a lot nicer to grade than BMD Film.

Feel free to leave any feedback or questions and I'll do my best to help you out!

Santiago de la Rosa reacted to Parker in NX1 moving to GH5
I shoot with GH5's every day at work while all of my personal and side projects are shot on the NX1 and NX500.

Obviously the 4k 60p on the GH5 is fantastic. And I quite like V-Log as well, it's far easier to grade than Sony's log profiles, and nicely preserves the dynamic range without destroying colors. I haven't really shot/graded 10-bit footage that much, as it is just overkill for the kind of work I have been doing, and the 8-bit is fine. I like how big the EVF is, and how you can switch between viewfinder and LCD screen easily while recording. There are lots of great and easily re-mappable function buttons, and you can program and save shooting modes in the custom profiles dial much easier and more effectively than you can on the NX cameras, which don't even save the video data at all. Of course, you can also move the zoomed-in focus checking area, unlike NX, and the tilty/flippy screen is preferable to the tilt-only screen. And you can't forget about the IBIS, which is just fantastic for handheld shooting, truly a game-changer for my kind of work, I need a monopod for my NX1 at all times.
    That being said...
I far prefer the NX cameras' photo/video implementation; it is still the simplest, best camera I have ever used for switching quickly between stills and video. No specific mode dials needed. Tap the shutter button to take a picture, hit the record button to record. The NX1 seems to have quite a bit better battery life than the GH5 in my experience as well. It is also lighter and feels better in the hands- the NX1 is an insanely comfortable camera, in the fact still the best I have ever used ergonomically, while the GH5 is surprisingly heavy and a bit bulky. The GH5 also has this very annoying tendency to hesitate for just a split-second or two when you hit the record button, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but it hesitates just long enough that I have double-pumped many, many times, while the NX seems immediately responsive. I do prefer the the menu system on the NX cameras as well.
As far as out-and-out IQ comparison, I have one of Luca's speedboosters on my NX1 pretty much all the time, so I have actually gotten quite used to the full frame look, especially DOF-wise, so it almost feels limiting sometimes to only have a super-35 equivalent with a Speedbooster on the GH5. Color-science wise, I can't say I prefer the one over the other - - in good light, I think both cameras look fantastic, with great skin tones and malleable colors -- basically you'll be able to get the look you're going for in post with either camera. The autofocus on the NX cameras is far, far better than the GH5, if that's important to you. And the NX1's internal 6.5k to 4k downscale is still unbeaten, detail-wise. The image is always just unbelievably sharp and detailed. The GH5 doesn't quite match that. And while the low-light and noise on the GH5 is probably preferable (clean at 1600, useable at 3200) I rarely, if ever, need these ISOs anyway, especially with the speedbooster and some fast glass to boot.
Of course, I'm not mentioning stills quality at all, I haven't shot many stills on the GH5, but obviously the NX is going to win that competition hands-down, it is still, even several years later, one of the best APS-C sensors ever made, with insanely good dynamic range, especially when pulling shadows.

So, bottom line, should you switch?
I think that depends. If you're pure run-and-gun, then yes, the IBIS (and the 4k 60p, if you need high-res slo-mo, with the benefit of a good log profile) is a pretty unbeatable combo for video right now. Throw in the 10-bit, and it's future-proofed for quite some time. The low-light IQ is more than enough. I think the GH5 is easily the best bang-for-the-buck camera around right now, and will remain so for quite some time. But if you're already invested in the NX system, which has its own fantastic native lenses (16-50S, wow), IQ wise I really don't think you're gaining that much. Not enough to go through the hassle of trying to sell and offload all my Samsung gear. I quite enjoy the GH5. But I still love shooting with my NX cameras, and don't feel like I'm losing out of for most of the kind of work that I do.

So take that as you will.

It was an interesting and well made mini documentary.
I feel sorry for the guy who went through the attack on the Bataclan, he's clearly suffering.
Gregory comes across as a complete twat, a spoilt brat who wants to play at being some kind of twisted French Rambo. To much money and time and a lack of morals and braincells.
The rise of extreme rightwing thoughts and thuggish groups is just as worrying as any Islamic terrorist threat. You only have to the USA to see where letting these idiots get out of control gets you. The vast majority of the terrorism they have suffered there has been commited by armed rightwing groups who are defending whatever nonsense they have in their tiny brains. It's time the vast majority of society stood up to these thugs and their mouthpieces. I have Polish friends who are about to emigrate from Poland as they are so fed up of this shit and these morons.
What is clear is that society does need to find some kind of purpose other than the pursuit of money (for greed or survival), nationalistic or religious nonsense. There are a lot of bored and unhappy people out there just looking for something....anything. For some the escape might be drugs, their work, tv but for others it's violence. It's a real shame

I was Born in Bosnia former Yugoslavia i was 14 when civil war erupted in my country this video reminds me of Serbian Cetnik and Croatian Ustase religious hate group that collaborators with the Nazi in WW2 that rounded up Jews, Roma, gays ect for the Nazi to be send to concentration camps. And that one night in 92 they come for my family just because we happen to be Muslims they rounded up every man of the age of 17 and they wore never seen again they did this all over my town i remember it like it was yesterday. Don't tell me bullshit that you are here to save your self from jihadis terrorist. You have hate and are paranoid and think that every Muslim is after you just like cetnik and ustasa thinks, they think that they have to protect the mother the land from the current threat. You will not fight Jihadis face to face like in Syria, but as always will sooner or latter will target innocent Muslims, Jews, gays ect or who ever you disagree with. Who volunteered to come to Bosnia to kill it was Serbian soccer hooligans, Russian hooligans, Greek religious nut bags and they did exactly the same as you preparing training for some Muslims apocalypse by training with guns like a Rambo, sooner or later when you live in that world of hate and fear you will end up regretting it whens something tragic happens. I lived in a war zone for over 3 years almost lost my life for being Muslim lost family members and friends seen them being taken away in to local hills and never seen them again who did it it was my Serbian neighbors 4 houses down who come at night with guns took my brother and father away but it was my Serbian neighbor who saved my life it was Serbian farmer who brought us milk and bread at night under sniper fire so us kids can eat. When i see this video it sacred the shit out of me because i know where it leads i seen same rag tag military uniforms with some military emblems and religious crosses home made staff like Gregory in this video marching and walking at night through my town when the opportunity come. 25 years its been since the war and to this day I have PTSD not as bad and guns is not the way to regain control of your life after traumatic experience you need help from a professional. And if you think oh shit he is Muslim let me blow your mind my wife is Polish and she is Catholic we have 3 kids with Catholic names been around guns, tanks, artillery seen dead bodies it does not make you a man it just gives you PTSD 2 years down the road thanks god for my wife and family without them i am nothing . Peace and love people for one another that is what we need not more guns and fear

I just spent the last two weeks in Costa Rica with the family and put together a video of the trip.  Almost all of the footage was filmed in 4k/Cinelike D with my GX85 and 14-150 II.  There are a few GoPro shots (scuba, zipline) and a few shots during a night hike with the 45 1.8, also my wife had a zs100 I used for some monkey shots (also using Cinelike D).  Due to my old under spec'd MacBook air, I could only export 10mbps. There are blown highlights and crushed blacks but I'm very impressed in what this camera can do.   Coming from a 5DII I can see a huge difference in quality.  There was a lot of rain so I had a ziplock bag and elastic band to create some weather resistance.

Santiago de la Rosa reacted to SMGJohn in Max bitrates and does the NX1 hack actually reduce macro blocking?
I remember that someone posted a post here showing the effects high bitrate had on macro blocking, personally I never experienced macro blocking anymore with 140mbps bitrate as its the most stable one with autofocus and everything on, if you turn off autofocus and sound you can push it to stupid levels like 220mbps is the highest I ever got before it gets unstable.
It speaks for itself, you probably remember the macro blocking issue before Samsung increased the bitrate through firmware update, I still got old footage with horrendous macro blocking before the first firmware rolled out.
I shot a lot of 140mbps bitrate video on Crete when I was there last year, did not notice any macroblocking that would cause issues for me and this is with in-camera picture profiles, the last one I pushed saturation to 10 just to see how much the codec could handle, seem to have handled the colours just fine, skin colour is a disaster though when you start experimenting with the picture profiles.

Santiago de la Rosa reacted to BTM_Pix in Best green screen material? Muslin/polyester
I know that we like to go for low cost solutions but in this case, because easy reliable chroma key is going to be so vital to what you are doing, I'm going to recommend you have a look at the Reflec system.
It has been around for years (it was originally a BBC development) and has also been ridiculously overpriced for years but at the end of the day it does produce good, easy, reliable keying without you having to do anything elaborate lighting or setup wise, which is vital if you are working on your own or with a small team. You can set this up in a few minutes and if you had to then go somewhere else and set it up again and get exactly the same results.
Basically, it is a piece of reflective material which fires the light from an LED ring that you mount around the lens straight back to the camera which gives you a pretty perfect key without having to worry about lighting the background and the bi-LED versions of the ring mean you can switch from green to blue background instantly.
It is not absolutely perfect but it is a very easy solution to work with and it means the time and expense of lighting the backdrop can be better spent lighting you.
There are a bunch of different versions of it to suit cameras from palmcorders up to broadcast ones and a lot of different sizes of the background material (including a pop-up round version like a reflector) but something like the Deskshoot Lite kit would be fine with a Panasonic GH camera.
If you hunt around on eBay you can find kits for around £800 and even less. There are also a few knock off versions kicking around as the fabric itself is based on (for which you could read possibly identical) to one made by 3M for safety clothing.
As I say, its not cheap but as what you are doing is solely based on chroma key then it might actually be worth putting money into this rather than say going big on a lens as for your application, my view at least, would be that your audience would spot the deficiencies in the keying long before the lens.

I recently graduated from my uni with a compilation of clips. All footage except for the first shot is filmed with the NX1. Mostly with the 16-50S and occasionally with some analog zooms.
One major mistake I made with exposing is blowing out highlights. Even if your subject is in the 35-50 IRE, you can still save it in post by bouncing it up to 60-70 IRE.

I jumped ship, sold my NX1 16-50S & 50-150S. I purchased the a7ii (returned it, I really like 4k recording and this didn't have it), a6500 (still have it, I love the eye AF but the camera is just too small for my hands) and tried the a7rii (returned it, picture quality was good but camera operation was too slow).  I am really thinking about purchasing the NX1 again as the only reason i sold it was because I was afraid that if I needed service, no one could repair it. I loved everything about the NX1 the operation, handling and the picture color/quality. The NX1 was easier to take photos with. Also, I can't afford Sony's 2.8 lenses.  So I'm also trying to decide to if I should buy the NX1 again.

Sometimes it seems like other filmmakers online have an infinite pot of money to freely buy whatever bit of gear they want, when they please.
Because of social media, we are bombarded with the "new toy" posts daily, so it gives this exaggerated impression that you're being left behind on the tech trail.
The Philip Blooms of this world do purchase every camera, lens and innovative new product ever made, but that's because he's got sponsors, and his business model needs him to stay very current with this week's hottest gadget. He knows exactly what he's doing.
Andrew runs a blog, has a clear passion and has a very clever way of making his dosh for new gizmos. Probably.
Myself? I'm like the rest of you. I have to work bloody hard to get anything new. The video industry is massively competitive in the UK. Gets harder as each week passes. That's just the way it is.

Prores 444 XQ = 17 min on single 256GB Card
    Prores 444 = 26 min

    Prores 422 = 58min

full time freelance editor here. I bounce around at a couple different companies whose clients are the major studios. for example, I cut this piece for the mummy.
the pay is great, frankly. i have been doing this sort of work for about ten years. I have also directed two features. the most recent was distributed internationally by paramount three years ago and we're still seeing good money from it. I don't spend more than I can afford on cameras and lenses, but am fortunate to be in a pretty good financial situation. No debt at all. My wife and I do not have kids. She also happens to be a film editor so she has an appreciation for my gear lust. But yeah, short version is that I work professionally editing and directing, and some of that income supports my personal collection of camera bodies, lenses, and support gear that i use more for fun, personal side projects that keep me sane.

Here's a project I just finished shooting. I tried playing around with some different settings than I've used in the past, and I'm pretty pleased with how the color came out in a lot of the shots. The whole thing was shot on a bitrate hacked NX1, almost entirely in 120p, with the NX-L speedbooster and Rokinon 50mm T1.5 used for most shots, though there are a few shots with the Roki 85 and Sigma 18-35 as well. All the gimbal shots were the NX500 with a Rokinon 12mm on a Zhiyun Crane.

I've invested in all the best NX primes thinking to flavour 16-50S, plus i have Nikon mount Samyang 24mm/f1.4 and Samyang 16mm/f2.0. And you know what? I rarely use all the bunch, but 16-50S is almost there. Also i love little 16-50/3.5-5.6 power-zoom (which came with the camera). You would not believe, but it is the second run-and-gun lens i use - it is sharp, great AF (much-much better that any NX prime), OIS supports the video nicely...

Sorry, but NX1 is a totally different camera from any Canon. Totally. You shoot ISO 100 with canon and push the shadows in post? TOTAL NOISE. You do the same with NX1? Much better results than native high ISO. Of course I'm not saying the NX1 is on par or better than 1DX MK2. It's 1 stop behind in noise level, but has 8MP more. And if you shoot ISO 100 even in low light and push in post...you'll be amazed. Even with 1/250 or higher.

AF is another thing. Mirrorless are way different than DSLR in AF technique. I have read so many posts like yours (about D500 having more keepers). Simply...and sorry to say that, you don't use the right technique with NX1. Again, I'm not saying NX1 is on par or better with D500 in AF. Again, it has more MP and a totally different focusing system. you need to know exactly how it works to make the best out of it. And yet, from time to time it misses focus, but...believe in me, I have improved 500% my keepers rate with practice. Now, when I shoot some sports like bicicle races, basketball or tennis, I have near 100% keepers, something I never achieved with any other system.

    Of course, I'm referring to NX1 + 16-50S or, even better, 50-150S.
