  1. It is very impressive, I love how they shot that film with the drone only. I really hope they update the Osmo line as well to use the new X5 with it, it would be even more perfect to build in a lightbridge connection so you can monitor (or control) the gimbal from a distance. I wouldn't be suprised if DJI is going to become a camera company, they make awesome products. To bad their customer support sucks, although until now I never had to deal with it.

  2. I kinda agree with DPC, that comparison is really weird. I agree that canon has great colors, but that profile with crushed blacks is pretty extreme. I mean, it's ok as a 'look' I guess, but not really something you can deliver to every client.

I'm also pretty curious about work or a reel, this site (especially the forum) is a great resource, but your opinions can be quite harsh and I don't see the actual knowledge and creative skills to back it up, except for a few music vids from a long time ago. This is not meant as a bash or to bully you, but I think it's too much spec talk and not enough filming.

  3. the difference between my footage and his are night and day... I already send the gimbal away, but I know it was perfectly balanced, everything at center gravity. Now Im wondering if I maybe had a faulty unit, or if there was something else to be done. I didn't try any other batteries by the way, didn't even know that that was a possibility...

  4. I've just tried to balance it with a setup I use a lot (24 mm nikon ais lens f2, sony a7s2 and an nd filter, with a zacuto quickrelease). I think that that is too heavy. It's a little bit above the max of 1200 grams and I think I balanced it pretty well, but especially when walking fast it gives a lot of vibrations. Slow moves are mostly ok, some small bumps here and there, mostly workable.

Too bad, I'm looking for a gimbal that can handle the 1200 grams. I guess your quite limited in your lens selection with the a7s, need to stick to native lenses.

I found the app a bit confusing, can't figure out the calibration...

But the unit itself feels great, comes in a great suitcase, its own app. I guess if you are willing to make some compromises on weight or maybe use a smaller cam (a6300 for example) this thing is really great.

Im not sure Im willing to make those compromises. First some testing....

  5. kidsrevil, I love those shots. Is that straight out of the camera or graded?

I wonder how much the tiffen filter effects the image. Don't you use ND or do you stop down with the shutter?

I have a question guys... maybe slightly off topic... what Picture Profile on a A7s II / A7r II would the NX1's Gamma DR compare the most to?

I really like the results I get with Gamma DR and it's a blast to grade. Sometimes I get banding in walls or skies but then no one notices once it's on YouTube because there will be banding in most cases after their compression. People complain mainly about the Sony's results with Slog2 and Slog3 colors but those are probably way flatter than Gamma DR so, I wonder if I would even get into those deep waters if I would try to match the same dynamic range / latitude with one of the Cine styles?

Im wondering about this as well, currently the nx1 is my b cam to the a7s (or the other way around, im not sure yet). Im still on the fence wether I should go all sony or all nx1.

Sony's picture profiles make it as difficult as possible to get decent all-round colour out of them but I think I've found a way.

Will share it in a blog post later.

really curious, this seems to be the holy grail of sony camera's. Decent color :P

  7. Hey guys, I made a clip for a band (all a7s, with external recorder). Now its on youtube, but the artefacts and macroblocking drive me crazy. Its much better on vimeo. I already rendered a version without grain and uploaded a h264 to youtube, that was a bit better than the prores 422 file who gave really weird artefacts. But its nothing close to what I have on vimeo.

When I check out other videos on youtube like the beautiful Dear Brother film, I see nothing like what I have, even in the dark scenes. Anybody that can help me out here?

  8. Different subject, but that is a beautiful little film there. I love the clarity of those shots and the warm grade. I see you shot with Nikkor primes, Im just looking into those ones (I just bought a 28 f2.8 and a 50 1.4, I missed out on the 85 f1.4 ;( ).  Any advice on that subject? (I shoot a lot of wedding films, but starting to get into commercials more: www.vimeo.com/zoutwater)

  9. I love the podcast from The Wandering DP, it such a great website with loads of information that is very usefull. (if you dont know it: www.thewanderingdp.com).

But there hasn't been a podcast for a while, anybody know why? It used to be weekly.

  10. Im looking for a great set of new lenses. We went over to nikon for our photography needs, but I still film with the a7s. I want a set of primes, im still debating wether I should go for the nikon ais primes, contax zeiss primes, leica r glass or the samyang primes.

Im a bit on a budget.

  11. Hi, I see the sony a7r II setup guide for sale. But I was wondering if that also can be applied for the a7s. And if not, if there is something for the a7s coming. I think a lot of filmmakers & videographers are waiting for a solid method of grading. I could benefit a lot!
