You don't need a 10bit screen to see the benefits of using a 10bit codec - the lack of banding, posterization and macro blocking artefacts after applying tonal adjustments especially with LOG footage are it's big advantages.

Resolve Studio NR is pretty good as well and I reckon you can squeeze another stop of usable DR out of the GH5 with good NR in post....

Even with sharpening set to minimum it's still too sharp for some - each to their own I guess. I nealy ruined a couple of shots a couple of months ago when I accidentally left the sharpening at 0 and not -5 and had to do some softening in resolve to get it to look natural. and not over sharpened.

since when is "good enough" good enough?
there isnt a camera on the market that has skin tones as good as im getting with 5d3 raw. its the most lifelike image that money can buy!
alexa skin tones are the most overrated thing on the plant earth. they make people look
    a) dead
    and
    b) yellow
and thats the gold standard right now
    SAD!

Shirozina got a reaction from IronFilm in will we ever see the rise of the global shutter cameras?
I guess readout speeds will just get shorter so it's not as obvious but I'm not sure a true global shutter will be around the corner anytime soon as manufacturers concentrate on more resolution and DR. If you compare the original BMPCC with the new 4k model then rolling shutter was an obvious problem with the first model and did restrict it's suitability in certain situations whereas although the new camera has rolling shutter it's much less and is not an obvious 'artefact' most users need to be concerned with.

The GH5 is getting on a bit now but is still delivering top notch image quality due to it's internal ( and external at 60p) 4k 4.2.2 10 bit codec. If you can't get excellent footage with this then your problems is not with the camera. Add to this the superb IBS and general ergonomic usability other manufacturers are still playing catchup. If anyone is worried about getting stuck in an M43 lens system then just get a speedbooster and use  APS-C/ s35 or full frame glass. A BMPCC4k is a cheap addition to any GH5 based system as it adds RAW, 60p internal and low light capability but it's not IMO a replacement.

I think the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K goes a long way in keeping the MFT system as a relevant system for filmmakers for the foreseeable future. Maybe not for vloggers, but as far as narrative filmmakers and documentary filmmakers go, it's hard to argue against the BMPCC4K overall IMO.

The GH5 is one of those cameras where far more people own one (or more) than are visible from forum posts and YT reviews etc.  They are workhorses.  Even if no more MFT cameras or lenses are released ever again there will still be many thousands of users making millions of videos per year for the next 5+ years.  4K 10-bit isn't going anywhere soon.  There are major networks in the US who still shoot 1080 and broadcast 720, and people watch YT on their phones.
My recommendation is to work out exactly what features you require in a camera system, to review your options and then go buy what you need.  If you aren't sure about a GH5 vs something newer then that means the GH5 already meets your requirements and so you're just tempted by shiny toys of new cameras.
At the end of the day, a camera is a tool to make stuff.  Either buy a GH5 and stop worrying about what's around the corner and go make stuff, or keep what you have and stop worrying about what's around the corner and go make stuff.  If you're worried about the resale value of the camera then maybe stick with the camera you already own and go buy stocks instead - tech is the worst investment possible

Your butt will probably fall off from sitting before we know that answer LoL. If and when that happens there will be m4/3 cameras that make the GH5 look bad. If you want a GH5 buy one. It won't just stop working like they say the day If they stop m4/3 camera production. It will take a Long time if and when it ever happens.
And for Video I am not too fond of really good lenses to be honest.  I guess it depends on what you like to shoot. Newer lenses to me are too good. Most of them benefit Photography more than Video. But if you want Razor sharp 4K newer is the way to go. A lot of younger people like that look. The only thing they have known to be honest.
If you want newer I would lean toward the Olympus ones with the Manual Clutch in them. Nice to have for Video. But they don't play as nice for the 5 Axis Panny IBIS on the GH5.

I'll just leave this here. Going 6k before 10-bit is the worst single thing they could do.

No. It's not going to add the secret sauce of an Alexa for instance, but it's still better to have more resolution if all they are giving you is an 8bit image. Which is what we typically get on these cheaper cameras. It means I can produce a nicer 4K image in the end. Not Alexa nice, but better than using a 100% crop of a GH4.

I've got the same CPU, 32gb of RAM, separate SSD for media cache and optimised media and a 1080ti in an eGPU and it won't play smooth without optimised media and Render Cache.
Premier doesn't use the GPU as much and can't therefore exploit an eGPU but YMMV.

Is playback done with the GPU though? - AFAIK it's used for the main processing tasks which include rendering difficult compressed codecs to ones that the CPU can playback more easily and this is where I get the major benefit as just using the internal GTX1050 causes the laptop to  throttle down to a crawl after a few minutes of intense work due to heat buildup. With the eGPU rendering cache takes a few mins and I can edit with ease and the laptop stays cool and the CPU will run at 100% all day long.

Also with H.264 and similarly highly compressed codecs the CPU does the decompression and not the GPU so your CPU is the limitation and not the GPU. If you want to have smooth playback you need to render optimised media and enable the render cache which will be done by the eGPU but then the resulting media is much easier for the CPU to playback.

Have you tried using optimised media and Render cache yet? as I doubt you will get smooth 4k editing without it. I spent a long time setting up my laptop based setup and this was the only solution. Even my 10 core overclocked workstation with 1080ti struggles with smooth playback on some media (esp in Premier).

I think you can just go out and buy some of the cheaper Pentax, Minolta, Canon FD  manual focus lenses and be done with it. The difference between a Pentax SMC lens and a Contax Zeiss for video is a pretty small gain. In a sense the Zeiss are too good to be honest. Hardly Filmic being sharp. But they do have a special look.
And personally I don't think shooting in 4K is ever going to look Cinematic. It is just too sharp especially on a GH5. They aren't known for being very Filmic to start with. The PK4, yeah that can have that look in spades. The Tiffen Pro Mist filters can take the edge off of too sharp of lenses. Cheaper way to go, at least to start with. And maybe using Sage's LuTs he has. He has done a good job with them.

I don't have a 14bit screen either. 16bit raw is very nice, my Medium Format digital back 16bit files have lots of Info that come in handy to make Natural HDR 8bit Images
