    Sony monopoly danger? Maybe
Do this market just needs to slow down?
Do we need to look at what we have from 2012 and realize it's good enough?
Do we have to sit back and watch the rise of smartphone cameras?
For now, I'm going to stick with my m43 gear. It's more than good enough, cheaper, lighter and gives me a really different aesthetic.

I was a fan of this camera based on rumors. Then comes out Af is not that great, EVS is not that great, and electronic ND is not really a ND. Well, handled hires is still a thing but not for that price. Sorry Oly, I really wanted to love you.

Cinema5D have put the Panasonic GH5 on test, with a few charts and have some harsh words for the new 10bit mirrorless camera.
I don't agree with much of their criticism.
    Here's an alternative opinion.

    New info
I am told they are indeed using a multi-aspect sensor.
It measures 18.9mm x 13mm in approx. 3:2 aspect ratio
20MP stills but the total resolution of the chip is 24MP
    24MP 3:2 is approximately 6000 x 4000 (just like the Sony A6300 in 3:2 stills mode).
Then the 6K photo mode is 3:2 with full sensor readout up to 30fps burst.
The normal stills mode is a 20MP 4:3 crop of the sensor. This is why 43rumours say 20MP sensor.
The 4K video is a 16:9 crop of the sensor using the full 6K width but downsampling on the chip.
Absolutely take this is a rumour until confirmed.
But it makes total sense to me... There is *no other way* of getting 6K photos from a 20MP 4:3 sensor like that featured on the GX8.

About 6k: since it is (now) mentioned as a "photo mode", probably they are considering it in a 4:3 aspect ratio - than the quantity of pixels is approximately the same of a 6k DCI image (and sounds better for marketing, and is in line with Panasonic 4k photo modes).

My concern it that IBIS was not mentioned in the specs...

After ejecting yet another Sony camera that looked great on paper (RX10ii) I thought I'd make a little comment about this...
its been replaced by a Canon XC10. On paper a crazy idea, but in reality it's an upgrade. No ultra high speed, but no problem TBH. Slow lens? Yeah, but great colour great battery life, brilliant menus and autofocus...
If you look on paper at the specs and the choice looks silly, but actually use the cameras and all becomes crystal clear.
Sony menus are so bad they ruin the experience of the cameras for me. The build quality is also questionable, probably partly due to an obsession with miniaturisation that is becoming counter productive.
The colour is so obviously Sony because it's always missing something. The F65 looks great, but once you get down to consumer/pro crossover level I'm afraid it's just a bit piggy unless you want a kind of odd bluish Kodak emulation on everything.
its not that you can't make it look nice, it's that it restricts you to a certain look that isn't always suitable, so I find unless the situation is very controlled I can't cut it with Canon C footage to my satisfaction.
its so disappointing because Sony specs are great, and their innovations like the memory CMOS for high-speed footage, as well as continuous ND are brilliant.
But every time I get one of these things into a high-pressure situation or back into post I just feel let down.
i actually WANT to like them, but I don't! So I'm venting.
ill add some XC10 footage to the pinned thread shortly...

Yes indeed, I did think that, but I would never pick it for events or reportage, so I neglected to mention. I'd go with a 1080p camcorder like C100 or FS100 at least, just because they do it all without workarounds!

For the kind of stuff I'd use it for, more narrative and promo, I can't imagine it's a huge problem, but still quite a bummer. It doesn't inspire confidence...

etidona reacted to Andrew Reid in Vimeo to automatically mute videos with 'unlicensed' soundtracks
    Have you seen this?

    vimeo.com/blog/post:626

Essentially Copyright Match works like on YouTube where commercial music is matched to a database and flagged automatically. On YouTube the video is not removed, instead a link to buy the music or advertising is added under the player.

On Vimeo the match results in the user being marched off to an 'appeals process' where he must prove he has the valid license for the sound track in use, or that the video consitites 'fair use'. There are no hard and fast rules for what constitutes fair use.

Personally as an artist who likes to mix my cinematography with the best possible music, I see this as severely limiting my artistic freedom. I also see my personal work on Vimeo as purely artistic and not in any way 'for profit'. They are part of EOSHD's editorial but a completely separate entity to any part of the blog which makes money such as the Shooter's Guides and I don't run any advertising.

This decision by Vimeo means I will seriously have to consider removing 90% of my artistic work from Vimeo and placing it only on my local hard drive offline.

Copyright issues on the internet are universally dealt with by DMCA takedown notices and where money is involved, for example where someone is blatantly making money off the back of somebody's else's music in their commercial wedding videos, the issues is dealt with through the legal system.

I don't see why Vimeo need to get involved at all.

I also don't like how a company seemingly has the final say in what artistic expression I am allowed to make.

Also for those who use The Music Bed, the problem doesn't go away. Vimeo will still Copyright Match tracks on there. All music, at the end of the day, is copyright material. So everyone whether they have a license or not will have to go through the appeals process and risk the appeals people at Vimeo disagreeing.

Say goodbye to your Vimeo portfolio? Personally I am seriously considering moving out to YouTube or an alternative site. I didn't sign up to this shit!

etidona reacted to pietz in GH4: List of quirks and problems
    Hello everybody,

i wanted to collect all the things where the GH4 doesnt quite work as it should. Those can be bugs, problems or things that are just worse when compared to the GH3. bugs or problems are something that need to be fixed and since panasonic seems to read around this forum, it might shorten the time to do so. quirks are negative aspects about this camera, that people need to know before buying it, since these things are not advertised:

-Very soft video in variable framerate mode: 1080p 96fps footage looks more like 720p which has been upscaled than actual full hd footage.

-No auto focus in slow motion mode: when recording 96fps the auto focus is not available, which is understandable on my end. but its also not available when you havent even started recording, which is just weird. so once you set it to 96fps, you have to focus manually.

-Slow auto focus in video: its hard to detemine a definiton for "slow" in this regard but since its slower than the GH3 it cant be working properly. it should be faster, due to the new auto focus system used or at least the same than the GH3.

-Crop on 4k video: recording in 4k will give you a crop factor of 2.3 instead of 2.

-Rolling shutter is worse in 4k: rolling shutter is worse when you are filming in 4k compared to 1080p, which makes sense. but its also worse than 1080p on the GH3. i thought the sensor read out was supposed to me much faster on the GH4.

anything else? i heard there was some audio issue with humming when not in manual video mode. is that correct? please let me know other things i forgot or didnt know.

After spending a couple of days with the GH4 I can say that it's now going to be my "go-to" camera over Blackmagic. There might be a tad bit more highlight room with ProRes but it's a dip I'm willing to take for better resolution, insane battery life, flip out OLED, and HFR. I have a 128GB card coming in Friday that I will test, but so far Sandisk Extreme 95's are working great, as well as 45's.

Wow! I see a not bad at all iso performance here! Thanks for sharing this, i'm every day more sold on this camera! I'm not a colorist but for being a 8bit footage it seems to grade fairly well too. The lens is simply spectacular, and your cat is nice too! :D
    PS: "around 4000 iso " means 3200? 4000? 6400?
