Time to spend some quality time with the Panasonic GH5.
The wait is over and 3 years after the GH4 we have the highly anticipated new camera. In some ways an evolution but mostly, I'm glad to say a revolution.

When this thing was announced it totally blew my mind.
And I have been wanting one ever since the first time I read about it.
If you don’t know what this is all about just think of it as a Speedbooster.
But instead of turning an APS-C into Full Frame it turns a Full Frame into a Medium Format Camera.
And as you may know, medium format in digital is pricy to say the least.

I will have more info and go deeper into this later on, this is just my first impressions.
Opened the box literally just a few hours ago.

Its very sturdy and all metal. It balances well after putting on a hefty lens.

The lens I tested tonight was a 80mm f4 Macro. I have others but wanted to see some closeups to check sharpness.
Its much sharper than I expected. Sharp enough I guess...
Also Ive seen no excessive vignette. Any vignette in the samples are added in post.
    I also added grain.

    Closeup

    Selfie

    Closest Focus

    With vignette and grain.

    Without vignette, still grain.

Wanted to buy the Leica 15mm... saw that over in Sweden you'd get a small discount + GM5. I was like... WHAAATTT?! Gimme! Unfortunately, they weren't able to accomodate shipping that deal to me. But man, those GMs look nice and small and great jacket pocket carriers with like the 14 (or Leica 15) and 20mm pancake lenses. Though I guess the LX-series might kinda cover that too. Wish they'd release a LX200 with a couple of fixes (fully articulated touchscreen, a mic-input, dedicated SD slot on the side, new sensor with better performance and stabilization integration, CineLike profiles, built-in ND filters (LX7 had this) and live HDMI-out). Of course it's more versatile to have an interchangeable lens system and arguably, you could opt for optimized primes to squeeze out a little more performance and character. The GX80 will have you covered. Just be aware that like the LX100 you can't have the screen facing the forwards for monitoring and there's no mic-in or CineLike profiles.

A6500 at least is out now.
I have the G85. That review is coming soon!

I am flying Phantom 3 Advanced (2.7K cam)  for 2 weeks now, the first 1 crashed into the water ( Quality failure) I got a new one and just 3 days ago I made the mistake trying to fly under a little bridge were it lost GPS and I was to unexperienced  to fly in ATTI mode and react real quick. I thought about quitting..but I like it so much that I will try a third time..this time thinking about a Phantom3 Pro..(4K)  it has almost the same camera quality of the Phantom 4 and even the Inspire 1. Now I will take more time to learn how to fly (also without GPS)

Here is a quick test with some rough grading. I just wanted to see how it reacted to being pushed and didnt fine tune, in other words, excpect ugly grades.
I say it holds decently. This was also shot in auto mode.
The Stills however does not need any grading at all imo.

I recently got an Olympus Pen-F.
The debate was between the Pen or a Fuji (x100t, xt1, x-pro1/2 etc). Ive always loved Fujifilm, even the small sensored X20 is an absolute joy to take stills with (to bad I needed wifi).
    The stuff I wanted was,
    Larger than 1" sensor
    Range Finder styled
    Awesome in camera colors
    Wifi

The reason I got the Pen-F instead is because its almost as good a range finder as the Fujis. Plus it has incredible IBIS for video. And I already have lenses and adapters for m4/3. Both of them have problems in video regarding aliasing, but for the BTS and home videos I will use it for its fine.
If the X-t2 do in fact get 4K, so I can get aliasing free video, then I will upgrade. Maybe I will keep both the Pen and the Fuji... who knows, have a few months to deside.
Any who here is the very first video test I did.
All shot handheld, in auto, no color correction or grading of any kind.

Like I said, Im not gonna use this camera for any serious video, grading, etc. Its my stills camera.
And for that I love it. Its got great handling, lovely sound (yes thats important) and the baked Monochrome 2 is so sweet I don't have to use raw.

Some say the Monochrome 2 looks a lot like Kodak Tri-X. To my eyes its at least not far off.
Here is a pic with actual Tri-X and an Olympus Trip 35.

And here is a Monochrome 2 from the Pen-F

Sony's picture profiles make it as difficult as possible to get decent all-round colour out of them but I think I've found a way.

I just bought a A7R2 and was thinking about selling my A7S, but I kept it and use them both. It's still a great cam, even for pictures it has mojo. Look @ some A7S video's on Vimeo and You Tube.
I would recommend the classic A7S.

Sure there are some truths here and there. But they're greatly exaggerated and most comes across as hipster talk to me.
    - Sorta reminds me of the mocking that Chris did in that A6300 video:

Hey, Guys. I wanna share my last job. It was a completely insane run and gun stealth job for a local artist making an urban intervention.
Gear used: A7r II, Sony FE 28mm F/2  (always in f/2) and Sigma ART 50mm with a Fotodiox adaptador (only a few shots).
Settings: 4k 24fps, Full frame and Crop Mode. Color: Autumn Leaves -1 -2 -3.  Used clear zoom in some shots too. AWB in all shots (specially horrible in sodium lights)
The great pro of this setup was the weight and the fact that it was perfect for point and shoot. I didn't have time to prepare, light or anything else. Probably the A7s II would made a better job with low lighting, but the superb AF (even with 50 ART + Fotodiox) plus the capability to use FF or APSC (and clear zoom( was a great deal. Hope you like it. It's not beautiful, but I think the message was delivered.
The Youtube compression is way better than vimeo (try to watch in 4k):

I currently shoot a lot of video on a EM5II, and the XPro2 has better IQ.  So it's certainly capable of making pretty images.  I'd say it all depends on how often you want to shoot video, what you want the results to look like, and how much you prioritize the video experience over stills.
I'm still getting used to making the XPro2 work smoothly as a video cam.  Like all "hybrid" photography cams that do video, it's got quirks so I need to get used to them.  Seems like it'll be easy enough to do though.  I mean, I shoot video with the GM1.  If that's possible, then the XPro2 won't be any issue.
As a photography camera, I think it's the best thing Fuji has on the market right now.  The old school knob control is perfection, IMHO.  So much better than the X100's.  Everything is much more refined than the X100's too.  There's nothing on the X100's that the XPro2 doesn't do better.

Friendly forum etiquette tip... Please don't quote long posts unnecessarily, just reply straight under them, as all this quoting doubles up on itself and makes the page extremely long to scroll through.
Yes worth the upgrade from the A6000 definitely, unless you have a compelling reason to go for a different model entirely like the A7S II or NX1. Most people won't, I don't think.

Absolutely, we all owe you one for the early A6300 coverage and you guys went out of your way to deliver...
Yes very unfair of me to make it sound like I was lumping people together.
If I had judged everyone the same I would have had to include myself in that as I have been to Sony press events for cameras organised in Berlin. I went to one for the a7R II for instance. They served us free champagne. I drank it. Went home. Wrote that the full frame 4K image looked like a dog had done a crap. I think this is really important in the industry. The PR company hasn't been in touch since. Sony however... have. I think they prefer honest feedback above the relationship bridge building bullshit any-day.
Personally I think their influence is becoming pervasive and it is rare to see someone come back from one of these events and raise an issue with the camera in public.
When you and Chris came back from Miami though you did a balanced video on it and the information was extremely useful for everyone thinking of buying the camera or not.
In the end people can tell if we are being balanced and they can tell when a site like DPReview is going down the drain with advertorial.
Hopefully also a site which still refuses to carry advertising (like mine) still means something.
I'm not sure it does any more.
Anyway, from the bottom of my heart be sure that I did not mean to lump your superb efforts in with the real intended target of my barbed comments, which were aimed at a minority online and not the good guys like you. I mean that.
Also, it's great to see you on the forum, hope you stick around, despite my occasional rants
Cine 4 is looking superb on the A6300.
None of the colour issues of the Creative Styles or the vast majority of the other Picture Profiles (ITU 709 particularly horrid)
I've graded it lightly with Fujiflm Velvia in Film Convert's a7s profile for Cine4.
I am astounded by the image quality of this camera for $1000... Take a look at that detail close up in 100% view if you download the frame grab below... it is FLAWLESS. Whatever 6K to 4K scaling method they have on the new processor... it works.
I prefer this image to my FS5.

Hitfabryk reacted to Oliver Daniel in My first music video shot on A7SII is finally released!
So yep... I've been shooting with the A7SII pretty extensively on a bunch of music videos.
This particular video is narrative-only, shot in Whitby UK within 6 hours with a crew of 5 people including make up artist.
My duties? I wrote the idea, shot, lit, graded and edited the video in FCPX.
Most of the video was shot in natural light. One night scene was lit with Lupolux Dual LEDs and Scorpion Lights, powered by batteries (lifesaver!). The sun was going down quick and we used the A7SII up until ISO 12,800.
Picture profiles were custom Slog2 profile and also custom Cine2, shot in 4k 25fps.
We used the Sony CLM-FHD monitor on the camera (very useful). Would never used the camera without a monitor again unless desperate. Camera remains light and easy to use.
Gimbal shots were on the Ronin-M, with the full IBIS activated with the Sony Vario-Tessar 24-70mm - operated in upright mode. Fantastic combination.
Handheld lenses were Sigma 18-35mm (used at 35mm), Samyang 14mm and Helios 44-2 85mm (bloody well hard lens to focus!).
This video wouldn't of been possible to shoot in 6 hours without the A7SII. The aesthetic helped the video with it's murky look, and the portability with IBIS was awesome. Helped keep us on our toes and be creative with the shots.
Issues? I went through 9 batteries and er, the zip on my coat broke and er... I got a wet ass?... that's about it.
I'll let you guys decide what you think the story is about and all that jazz.
    Hope you enjoy it!!

Here's the Velvia preset, which I absolutely love...
First shot, crappy light but it has that 'x' factor Sony is nearly always missing, all without any effort at all in post... Look at the smooth tonality and balanced colour...

By the way, here's what Velvia looked like without the 16-235 correction in Premiere... different to the JPEGs and on the camera screen, it had crushed blacks. However the codec has kept them! They snap right out when you correct for the dumb Quicktime RGB range clipping.

Next shot a much more challenging one for dynamic range. Look how much you can get out of it with the most simple quick grade possible - just Fast Color Corrector in Premiere and zero else, not even a RGB curve change...
First ungraded, 0-255 straight off card:

Second graded, 16-235 fast colour corrector

Oh and very important this...... in doing this correction to extend dynamic range notice how colour doesn't go 'weird' like with S-LOG
Cheers for that vid Kaylee, fun to watch.... You can see how detailed the image is pretty well from that. I dial sharpness down -4 to take the edge of it and bring the blacks up a bit in post. Nice fast lens helps too, and Speed Booster. It is a really cinematic image with these adjustments.
