or check out Andrews iphone X video here on his site.    or check out Dave Altizers own review of a dslr  vs phone for photos.  ironic how consumer cam users love to show how close they look next to high end cams, but aren't ready to admit a phone is just as good and sometimes better than their gh5.

I had previously watched a vid by woodencamera, detailing the process, with the intent of selling their $300 kit.  I eschewed the kit and traded cents for sense. Or maybe I have that backwards!  Part way through destroying most everything but the electronic bits, I realized just how large and old and fu mbly my not quite over the hill appendages had become.  I briefly imagined how a pile of parts would look back inside the tidy Bmd packaging. Would blaming the Fedex man for the destruction be reasonable? I mean, violence against packages during the Holiday season is well documented I reasoned.  But then the allure of an extremely light weight oled with real glass optics and a buttery smooth adjustable diopter that I can use with the glasses that I need for my not quite over the hill eyes won out.  18 tiny screws later, and some very intense moments involving an sdi cable the the diameter of a tooth pick, the evf was ready.  I anxiously powered it up.  Nothing.  A feeling of panic quickly ensued.
Then I remembered the evf has an awesome feature where it powers off when it senses your eye is away.  I immediately placed my eye up to the  display.  I was greeted by the sight of my slightly dirty floor.   Like the Koolaid man.  Ooooh yyeeeaah.  But the joy of performing an open evf transplant was short lived. I realized if I couldn't find a way to mount the evf, I would have to repeat the entire surgery again to install the kit from woodencamera.  Ooohhh nooooo.  An hour of trial and error later. I found a Manfrotto pico clamp.
    Success.

Jon, you'll be happy to hear at least one of the "snobs" at LGG, Marc Wielage,  uses the c7 for daily grading, but not sure If he uses it for hdr work.   If you buy a certain remote for the lg's you can access the service menu which lets you turn features on/off (specificallyMaxfall) but use at your own risk!  Sounds like you've put some time into figuring @$&* out.  Oh, and now that you can see what your looking at, I can't understand why you still like the gh5?

Since this thread has already wandered, Jon, do you have access to Netflix or Amazon?  If so I think it will be quite easy for you spot the difference with 4khdr material.  The Ridiculous Six is shot on film and supposedly mastered in 4k Dolby vision.  Beautiful natural looking imagery.   Another thing to keep in mind, is that your Lg is upscaling hd automatically, as well as applying various detail, sharpening, contrast enhancement, etc....So unless you have turned all of that off, you won't really have a good idea of what footage looks like.  Also, another thing to think about is a bmd mini monitor, decklink, etc... combined with DR14 so you can send hdr metadata over HDMI (Not to mention a video signal unadulterated by your mac/pc/gpu.)

Yes the pixels can come back. Resolve 14 has a  pixel fixer or can be done manually in other software.  You can minimize heat and extra long takes when possible to decrease the chance of occurance. I myself wouldn't have the slightest concern about buying the 1dc used or the potential pixel problem,  but a new 1dxii would certainly be less of a risk.

The science is far from settled, for example on the topic of renewables and the management of food, land and the agricultural economy. Further research is needed there to gauge the impact losing all that land to wind farms will have on food supply. Furthermore, it's interesting to hear what Freeman Dyson says in the film about the computer models - that they are a good tool for understanding the climate but a bad tool for predicting it.
I'm no climate change denier but the discussion is getting way too dogmatic on both sides of the fence.

Yup, but then again, is that what one wants for whatever production they're doing?
Speaking for myself, I'm not a big fan of huge dynamic range in fictional narrative.  I'm a product of gritty 70's American cinema and I'm not afraid to admit that I think there's maybe TOO much "unthoughtful" resolution and dynamic range in modern productions.
Hollywood comedies are the worst with this.  Boring lighting and cinematography with such a high resolution sheen one starts analyzing the uncanny valley flaws of the sound stage.  The visual info is just distracting.
There's something to be said for deliberately obscuring what the audience sees in an image.  That opinion maybe puts me at odds with the majority of people out there, but so be it.
However, I do think good dynamic range is perfectly fine for corporate video stuff, nature docs, --or even certain narrative fiction, I guess.  Depends.  It's a tool, you know?
I mean, I can Ooo and Ahh with the best of them when watching pretty 60p 8K time lapse footage on huge monitors, but just visual stimulation ain't enough for me and pretty pictures gets old real fast without an appropriate story.
Eh, it's all subjective.  All of this is OT anyway, so I best shut-up.  Balance your decision on what matters to you, and you'll be fine.

F35 is an interesting beast.  I can upload raw footage so people can play with or if you send me a harddrive or sd card I can put stuff on it.
I recommend to everyone if you can rent it, or just try everything.
And the GH5 - very nice camera.  Not for me, but I am just one opinion and trust your own instincts.  My opinions change daily.

My experience is similar to HockeyFan12.
I have a 65" 4k lg oled that I view from 6ft, which from what I've read is the max distance that the resolution bump over hd is perceivable.   It's really more about the dynamic range and gamut of the display coupled with media desiged to take advantage of those capabilities. (Like dolby vision)that make a dramatic difference.  There is already a ton of streaming 4k content on both Netflix and Amazon, but actual resolution seems equivalent to hd bluray.  Even with uhd bluray one might not see a real advantage.  I watched the newish film "Arrival"on uhd bluray and the resolution was worse than many regular blurays.  So, imho, the 4k can be noticeable especially as you intend by showing your own content. If anything though, I find the 4k files from my 1dc and raw fs700 to look somewhat worse on the oled compared to viewing them on a 1080 panny plasma (2nd to the kuro?).  It should be fairly easy to find scientific info(or at least reasonably informed perspective)  regarding 4k hdr displays vs alternatives on the various avforums.

So far, everyone has picked vinyl as sounding best.  And that is with a lowly entry level $12k system.  Digital may be more accurate, but..........

If I were still shooting, I would probably buy what my clients wanted me to buy. If I started getting asked for 4k, I'd buy a 4k camera. Otherwise, I wouldn't. And I'd shoot in whatever the lowest spec'd format they'd accept is.
As a hobbyist, I would just buy whatever I wanted and not care about what other people are doing with their money one way or the other.
To this extent, I think debates about 4k are a bit absurd because our needs all vary so much. We should just be doing our own research at this point and not question what others are doing unless they specifically ask for advice.
I think the low end and high end will adopt 4k before anyone else. What separates Netflix and Youtube (and Amazon) is that their distribution is all digital, whereas many networks are still getting content delivered in HDCAMSR tape. There's so much 1080p infrastructure in television. And the cost of shifting vfx (in particular, but editorial in general) to 4k is massive, potentially millions of dollars for tentpoles. But they can afford that.
So I see Netflix, the ultra low end (where you don't need to buy and maintain a large gigabit ethernet network for post because it's all done locally), and the very high end leading the way for 4k. I think bread and butter stuff, shooting for tv and ads and whatnot, that's gonna be 1080p for the near future.
What is funny is seeing content shot at 4k or 6k that goes through the whole post process like that only to deliver in 2k. Your resolution is only as high as the weakest link, usually a vfx house that doesn't have the horsepower to render CG at 4k.

Nice explanation...But facts and knowledge don't count any more. Feeding the naive people's phantasy with claims like "the GH5 is the ARRI for enthusiasts" is much better and you get more likes. Irrational fanboyism seems to be the new religion...
The famous German philosopher Hannah Arendt said once:
Panas marketing and social media guys did with the GH5 hype an excellent job and acquired hundreds of sales representatives - aka "independent enthusiasts / reviewers" - (mostly) for free. This reminds me of the paid Canon video posting in DPReview some weeks ago, a guy who claimed to sell his RED for a Canon 80D...Of course... :-))))
Conclusion: Feed people's phantasy and they will give you their money and their soul! (+1 for Panas marketing devision - Guys you did an excellent job!)

Really! I am seriously concerned with the posting of a purely subjective statement like this from someone who is a "PANASONIC AMBASSADOR" [caps from the guy's own avatar]. Other statements from this source are also of similar quality. This is pure PR, complete with hyperbole. I am not saying it is not true, but that this is the type of stuff that demeans this forum. I appreciate that the conflict of interest is at least visible. On the substance - no other camera available at around the GH5 price enables one to shoot "serious movies."? Alexa quality? In fact this statement led to look at his others, and there are post after post of "game changer" and other PR phrases. I am NOT suggesting any censoring, just an expression of distaste. We all can get enthusiastic, and revel in others' enthusiasm, but not from someone who is not receiving gifts from manufacturers.
I do appreciate that the GH5 has important features that put pressure on competitors, and so I welcome its introduction. But I think the small sensor (MFT) will ultimately doom this type of camera for "serious" moviemaking. That is subjective too, but not based on who is supplying me with equipment or paying my bills. It should be clear I am neither an ambassador, or a diplomat! :).

There is a discussion on cml about monitoring for hdr.  You may be able to glean some insight there.  From what I have read so far, and my own forray into hdr, 12 bit aquisition  seems to be the recommended minimum prerequisite.
Also, I cannot remember if the mysterybox articles mention that if you would like hdr scopes and controls, the paid version of Resolve is also necessary.
As an aside, its unforunate that hdr display tech shares the same name as a photographic technique which only simulates greater dynamic range.

Some people will maintain certain views no matter what and no amount of logic, reasoning, or real-world evidence will change their minds. Perhaps it's marketing, politics, drama, negative attention, ego, who knows? The best you can do is put information out there that everyone can use to find the truth for themselves and move on to the next puzzle. In the thread below folks argued with the inventor of the Speedbooster, one of the top lens designers in the world. As a cognitive scientist I wonder how these folks would argue in person with everyone physically present vs. the isolation and extreme dissociation created by the internet:

When the GH5 is released you'll have your opportunity to refute Cinema5D with your own tests and evidence, and if you provide instructions for doing a proper test, your readers can replicate your tests and decide for themselves.
