I sure hope BM adds support for 3D LUTS on the Video Assist. You would think since all of their cameras shoot LOG that it would be a necessity.

Not trying to turn this into an FCPX conversion thread, but FCPX has been doing this flawlessly for a while now.
Still, very cool that Resolve is implementing a lot of these high level features. More competition in the market is good for us users.

so, checked out the XC10 in depth at NAB, i went there having preordered it with high hopes for a lightweight 4k camera that was cheap and easy enough to just whip out on scouts and do some tests.
we were all let down pretty big on this one.
first of al it just feels cheap, granted a lot of people playing with them at nab but while i was holding it the viewfinder just popped off so easily it literally fell off the camera. as well it sucked, it might be the worst view finder i have ever looked through, i had to ask, why does everything look purple on this view finder. i went through all the settings, WB, ISO and matched them to the canon c300 next to me and still everything look purple.
The camera had one built in ND, that you have to literally go through about 4 steps in the menu to get to, its electronic, not glass as far as i can tell, but NOONE on the floor could tell me how many stops it was, seemed to be at least 3 to me, one person told me it was 1 and i just laughed at that.
The lens is parafocal, which is good news, and the front didnt rotate which was great news, so i was still intrigued. then when i checked to see when the aperture started to ramp, um the answer was, immediately! i mean, right away, its only 2.8 from 27mm to about 30mm, but then the horrible thing is that from that point it doesnt change incrementally, it moves 10ths as you zoom, so for example it starts going: 2.9, 3.1, 4.2, 4.5, 4.7, 5, etc….
its absolutely horrible, so much so i put the camera down after that and said thank you and walked away. the only way to shoot with this camera is to probably put it in some automatic iso setting, or set it to a 5.6 permanently. still , what i thought it would be good for is a ready to go, whip it out and shoot, possibly doc camera, nope…you have to dig into the menu for every setting with this tiny joystick thing, it was a pain the ass. i wouldnt even recommend it to a beginner because its so confusing, hopefully no one tries to learn on that camera.
i cancelled my preorder 10 minutes ago...
my favorite cameras of the show, the arri mini and the black magic micro! the smallhd monitor was also sweet, the clearest eyepiece i have ever looked through. put that on the micro(that does 60fps now) and i have a nice b-cam that shoots 10bit pro res. as well you can choose global shutter up to 30fps.
oh as well, the new ursa view finder is also horrible, it looked really green, but i was told it was a demo model, but i went around to each one and they all had different shade of green tint but all looking at the exact same thing with the same settings. i kept asking why doesnt this match the monitor on the camera and i kept getting the same answer, oh, this is not the production model, hopefully we fix that. i would personally skip the BM view finder and stick  a small hd on it, if i was at all interested in an Ursa. You CAN have external power on the small HD too, you just need the canon battery to wired power adapter, simple.
    hope this helps!

Come on folks, this looks great but it is a bit early to announce the death of Canon/Sony/Panasonic etc.
We have all used BM products, there are always issues. The Canon will be bullet proof, Sony only slightly less... They have NDs, small battery solutions, global service centers.
I'm buzzed about this camera... But let's hold fire on the age old debate about X being dead, long live Y.

It is likely whatever low light advantage the sensor has, that is cancelled out by the F2.8-F5.6 zoom.
Just get an LX100 or stick a zoom on a GH4.

    1. Innovative Lighting Tools
Lighting is the most important technical aspect of filmmaking, yet so, so many people don't bother! INSANE!!! I'd like to see a growth of innovation in affordable, LED based lights with high light output. Smartphone controlled lights. Clamped lights. LIGHTS!!!
    2. Modified Lenses
Lenses are more interesting when modified, certainly when they can do some extra effects and have cine gears. Give us some character!
    3. Ninja Star 4k
I don't want a massive screen on my tiny camera thanks! The Shogun really needs a baby brother.
    4. Panasonic Video Camera
They have a GH4, and then...a Varicam. Surely they have a partner to the GH4 on the horizon? 4k 60p, better DR and 120fps HD are my only requests.
    and... that's it.

No, shooting 'flat' on a DSLR is nothing like shooting real LOG. I use VisionColor profiles on my canon because I like the look, but not because I'm squeezing a ton of extra details out of the sensor.

Improving and adding more options sure sounds like innovating to me. You can't reinvent the wheel every year. A smart company should absolutely be looking at what the competition is doing- it's good for everyone, especially the consumer.

... here's the latest video I DP'd, which makes use of plenty of slow-motion and other film 'cliches.' I love every minute of it.

We filmed it last fall, but the music wasn't mixed/mastered until very recently. Shot on FS-700. Canon lenses. ProRes through Ninja Blade, internal for Slo-mo (I hadn't yet discovered the magic of the 7Q). Some variation of a flat profile, but not quite S-log.

Well you said it there Ed, the slow-mo footage is seen on camera tests on Vimeo and YouTube. It's people just trying out a feature and sharing their results. No big deal.
I use slow motion on about 95% of my projects. A lot of them are music videos or hyper stylised commercial vids. It's completely necessary and really adds impact to some key moments. That's why any camera I purchase/rent must almost always have a slow motion feature.
It really depends on your shooting style. For example, news gathering doesn't really need it. Action? Oh yes!!!
Also don't forget that iPhones can do 240fps and the GoPro Hero 4. Mass market slow motion = mass YouTube/Vimeo slow mo tests!

Never underestimate the "It looks cool" aspect of amateur filmmaking.  Style above substance is easy to do.  After all, if you're making a "real" film does it typically involve a bunch of random urban shots with some music bed?  No, but when you're making something to show off your camera or lenses that's good enough.
And really, what are a majority of vimeo video creators doing other than playing around with their stuff?  Not knocking it, that's what I do too.
Also, a lot of folks (not me) use this DSLR/Mirrorless gear for weddings.  Slowmo is a novelty that works well in that heightened romantic-reality scenario.

Nick Hughes reacted to M Carter in I need help to understand better the Tescam DR 60d MKII. and Tescam Vs. Zoom H6.
Works fine for me and is very useful.
I have the original, not the MKII - you really need to do some tests with the unit - my meters are very conservative, and if I set levels at what seems proper, I have pretty weak tracks. The self-noise of the 60D is fine, but I'd really like a beefy waveform. Set it to really hit the peaks and use the minus-6 backups.
The limiter is very natural sounding - I use it all the time. It's not a total brickwall, but it helps.
One of those Anker USB phone batteries will power the DR-60 for hours or days. The the 60D is very picky about internal batteries and will report "dead battery" for batteries with a lot of juice left, esp. with rechargeables. Any USB power source (like a little phone charging brick) will power it via USB if necessary when you're in the studio.
One final tip - just do the quick format for cards - the full format, myself and many people give up after ten minutes or so and disconnect power.

Fuzzy, I wouldn't count on Oly for a firmware fix when they can't even do one for 24p on their flagship camera.
