  1. The Aputure VS-2 is no good in the sun either? I was thinking of buying it :(

I have not tried the Aputure myself, but quite a few reviews say it is not good. If you compare the specs of the two, you will see that contrast, luminance and so are pretty much equal, so my best guess is they are quite equal in day/sunlight.

By the way, here is what I use at the moment on my G6, - and it works like a charm.Shade.thumb.jpg.f58ea9096f640e5076f51d4d

It is a cheep $20 loupe. I,ve glued a piece of bicycle tube to the top of the loupe and put some velcro on the bottom. This makes it easy to mount/dismount the loupe. Maybe not be the best longterm solution as you might break the hinge on the monitor. Anyways I have been carefull/lucky and after 6 month it's still working :),

  2. Thanks for sharing.

It seems like all the cheep field monitors - MustHD, Aputure and so - have problems in sunlight. I guess even the more expensive ones like Small are having the same issues unless you spend $2.499 on a Small DP7-PRO HIGH BRIGHT.

Maybe the MustHD 5,6" would work better as the 5,6" sunshade might cover more of your face and then provide more shade on the screen. But then again, this might bring your face too close to the screen and make it impossible for the eyes to focus. So these types of monitors seem to work indoors, but not outdoors.

Though it is a lot more expensive I´ll wait for the SmallHD Sidefinder. Think this one will be an investment in line with good lenses.

  3. @TSV and @Davide

I'm considering a MustHD 701 as well. I have a GH4. What are your experiences after some days of working with it? In particular I´m interested in this:

When in 4K mode on the GH4 does the 701 display a full screen duplicate of the GH4?

And how does the 701 fair outdoors . - and in sunshine?

  4. It's not exactly new. Not available, but has been announced before. There has been coverage about it on EOSHD: http://www.eoshd.com/2014/11/surprise-4k-super-35mm-jvc-gy-ls300-costs-just-4k/

  5. There seem to be no interest here on EOSHD in the new JVC GY-LS300. Just wonder why as it seems to have most - if not more - features than most here on this forum have been hoping for in new Canon/Sony/Panasonic cameras. This camera seems to be quite innovative in several areas.

    Here is a link : https://vimeo.com/121192570

Is the lack of interest because JVC is not having a good reputation? Well, Samsung had a so-so reputation before the NX1, right? I¨m by no means a camera tech expert, but this JVC looks pretty interesting. Maybe this camera turns out to be the big surprise of the year

  6. Regarding the contrast: I too do not fancy crushed blacks and prefer them to retain some details. Good footage (well exposed), good scopes, a well calibrated monitor and good eyes are the way to achieve that IMOP :-).

Regarding the letterbox: I always make the letterbox as a separate layer and only put sharpening to the primary storyline (I use FXPX). I never had the issue you show us here

  7. So I tried FCPX in the end and glad I did because it transcodes MJPEG 4K at real-time speed (24fps) to ProRes (various flavours) on my iMac and the quality is perfect. Some quite amazing magic sauce going on with this. Resolve is giving me 7fps and FCPX can even edit / playback MJPEG 4K from the 1D C flawlessly on my Macbook Pro Retina 15" whereas Premiere can't (and has the banding).

I won't yet be switching NLE but going to explore Compressor as my transcoding app for the 1D C.

The FCPX interface has NO batch export for clips, you can only do them one at a time or bunch them all into one clip on a timeline export... pretty stupid!!

It has now I guess, - with this app https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQAoqnlTlbg

  8. So I finally made a list of what I might buy (I hope it won't change)

So I am planning on buying a GX7 with a Mitakon Canon EF Lens to Micro Four Thirds Camera Lens Turbo Adapter Mark I and a Nikon 28mm f2.8 AIS

So the only concerns I have now is how good is the Mitakon lens turbo? are there any other options (apart from Metabones), I heard of th RJ lens turbo but I don't know if it is better, or should I take an other one with a different mount (Nikon mount)?

I know that I have to buy an adapter for the lens (Nikon F to Canon EOS Camera), I just hope it won't create any problem.

    So what do you think?

    Thank you

    By recommendation from Andy I purchased the Mitakon Turbo / Canon>MFT ( I have a G6 camera).

I use the Mitakon with a C/Y>EF adapter for my Yashica ML lenses and it works just fine.

When using the Mitakon with my Yashica lenses wide open though, - especially the 28mm lens, - the picture gets rather soft in the corners. I´m not an expert on the subject, but in my experience the wider vintage lenses you use, the softer the corners are wide open and this will be intensified when using a speedbooster, that being a Mitakon, RJ, or Metabones.

Just got a used Metabones Speedbooster/C/Y>MFT, but have not got the time to compare it to the Mitakon.

I have also tested the Mitakon with my Sigma 18-35mm Art lens, - excellent results.

The Mitakon is a very good option IMO.

  9. Gentleman...got the GH4 today...now need lens advice.

    1. I own Samyang 85mm 1.4, Canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron ASPC 17-50 2.8

    2. Should I get a SpeedBooster for these (will the speed booster work for both FF and ASPC Canon lenses?)

    3. Should I get 12-35 Lumix

    4. Other options?

If you need autofocus the 12-35 is a good option. If you - like me - mostly shoot video, I would go for a Samyang 12mm 1.4 instead. This lens in combination with your 85mm, 50mm and 17-50 lenses will cover most situations. These lenses are all good in low light so unless you need one more stop or wider angles, you might not need a speedbooster at first. You will of course need an adapter for your Canon glasses. This can be a cheap one from eBay or a speedbooster, which works with both FF and ASPC.

The Samyang 12mm does not fit on speedboosters, but you can get it in MFT-mount

  10. I will like to have a small external monitor for my G6 camera but need some advice.

First of all, cthe G6 altogether work with a monitor during recording?

Second, I have been looking into MustHD 5" and 5.6". I know the screen resolution is bigger on the 5.6", - 1280*800 vs 800*480 on the 5" . How much does this difference mean in real world use?

  11. I know some people, - among them Andy :-), - don´t like vari ND´s.

If you are in a controlled and/or studio shooting environment  where matte boxes fits the workflow, I´m sure fixed/stacked filters might be the number one. In my workflow, - more run and gun, -  stackable ND´s are not convenient.

I have the latest edition of Genustech Eclipse vari ND and it gives me everything I want. There may be a little colorcast, but it is easily solved with a bit of CC in editing and I ´m pretty sure you have to deal with the same issues with most stacked ND¨s.

  12. The Canon mount it is then.

    Thanks, Andy

Well, the Canon mount it is not going to be anyway, simply because the Samyang 12mm is only made for Canon M and not EF. Didn´t noticed it when I ordered so had to return the lens for an exchange to MFT.
