To me, these handheld gimbal stabilizers are bigger game-changers than the 4K/upped color space push. I'm just an enthusiast, so maybe the "gadgetry" aspect is what's appealing to me, but the effect that smooth motion has on footage is pretty profound.

Exciting to see and know that you can have both (4K + a gimbal) for around $4,000!

jurgen reacted to Andrew Reid in Sony A7 II review - 5 axis stabilisation in video mode
The Sony A7 II is the first full frame mirrorless camera with 5 axis stabilisation inside (sensor shift based).

It also gets some ergonomic and video upgrades such as XAVC-S at 50Mbit/s, S-LOG and 120fps. But how does image quality compare to the Sony A7S and how effective exactly is the much anticipated "SteadyShot Inside" for video?

You don't get it do you. At all.
The video is supposed to have a raw, ramshackle, Manchester band / New Order feel to it. Why do you think they left the cars in the background towards the end and have the crew come out?

Of course they could have made it slicker like every other fucking music video... that is not the point...

Despite appearances the third RX100 is no incremental update. It is astounding that Sony have managed to put a built in ND, OLED EVF, 120fps and XAVC codec in a compact camera, not to mention the new 24-70mm F1.8 to F2.8 lens. Sharply detailed resolution in video mode round out the spec.

But does the reality of shooting with it live up to the specs on paper?

Thanks for the review Andrew, great read!

Really excited to see what June 3rd is all about! An EF Speedbooster with electronic connection would be amazing. I've had my GH4 for about a week now using a focal reducer that does the job, but aperture control and IS would be nice.

Here's my first test, shot the day after I got the camera and could put a lens on it with the focal reducer I got off of Ebay. Tried out the VFR mode and I must say I'm really impressed. My expectations were a lot lower after reading people's opinions and watching their tests. So excited to see what this camera is capable off

jurgen reacted to Andrew Reid in Potential film score licenses from EOSHD
I am in talks with some professional musicians and film scorers here in Berlin and have discovered some real talent... The average quality of their work far exceeds the current music licensing libraries and it is more original, more interesting.
I am thinking therefore some kind of music licensing service might be useful to offer on EOSHD especially with the Vimeo copyright problem filmmakers are facing. I don't want to see people sued for copyright infringement when they are just trying to express themselves and their art.

Some of the pros I know here are doing really high end audio - we're talking Hans Zimmer & feature film standard. However these are professionals and we need to pay them. It is simply not going to wash using a track for free that took them 6 months of recording time in studios that charge $400 per day.

I'm wondering what a fair and acceptable rate would be for licensing? I want it to start low to be accessible to artists but scale up to commercial work in the right way. Typical prices at the Music Bed range from a minimum of $50 for non-profit to $399 for commercial work and for larger scale commercial work custom quotes are required.

EOSHD music licensing would be different.

For personal work or zero budget short films on Vimeo / YouTube (non-commercial)
    $19 - 1 track
    $50 - 5 tracks
    $99 - 10 tracks

For commercial work - small clients (<10 employees) and non-profit organisations
    $50 - 1 track
    $99 - 5 tracks
    $199 - 10 tracks

For commercial work - large clients (>10 employees) and advertisements
    $199 - 1 track
    $399 - 5 tracks
    Custom quote - 10 tracks

For features, documentaries and short films with a crew
    $199 - 1 track
    $499 - 5 tracks
    Custom quote - 10 tracks

Of course before you buy you can play all tracks in full on EOSHD to see if they are what you need.

I'd like some feedback on this first before I decide to go ahead with it or not as the amount of work involved here is very significant.

In particular what do you need from such a service?
What projects do you need music for... And what do you think of the pricing?

    Cheers!

My full review of the Panasonic GH4 (final retail unit) is coming next week. Until then I am enjoying Philip Bloom's views on the camera here!

A big thanks to B&H Photo & Video in the US for shipping internationally a GH4 unit with no recording limits, I got it before it was even available in Europe. Delivery took just 2 days! Impressed!

That A6000 autofocus is insanely fast... that'd be great for documentary.

So at the moment, we know that over 60-odd FPS the GH4 softens and has more aliasing. This is in line with the FS700 as well,  probably a better option than Red Epic's sensor cropping still.

That audio pulsing is probably solvable by using a TRRS jack and sending the correct part to ground, so the pulsing signal doesn't oscillate the recorded sound. It probably doesn't make a huge difference, but still isn't great design, as you can't really bury it, it will always oscillate the audio recording (probably creating a harsh feel) unless it's defeated by grounding.

Their own mics are TRSS connectors, and I'm sure they want you buy the YAGH too.

A real design flaw is obsessing about 24p. why not 25p at full 4k? why no 100fps? It appears to be an artificial limitation.

Happy to have two threads actually...

    One for problems.

    And one for design aspects.

Slow-mo softness at 96fps and 2.2x crop in 4K is an aspect of the design.

A problem for me would be a bug or usability quirk.

Let's continue on the thread but be clear on what we mean...

Having some menu quirks - for instance, if I am in video mode on the dial, and I go into the menu, then down to the Playback tab, and then into the playback menu itself (arrow over into the actual list of options), the screen goes black for a quarter of a second, the mic shuts off, and then the screen comes back on as normal. The audio comes back as soon as you exit the menus. Not an issue in any practical sense, but quirky.

Also, going into the menu system when I don't immediately start on the playback tab (so if the last time I left the menu I was in the, say, custom tab), the screen is ever so slightly dimmer. When I go into the playback menu itself, the screen brightens up by a very faint amount. This also happened on my old GH3 and I've seen (and heard of) it on GX7's, so, again, not any sort of issue, but quirky.

edit - Also, I've been stopped twice on the street while shooting photos and asked if I was using a GH4. As an introvert, I consider this to be a considerable flaw

(Also also, I live in Austin, Texas in the United States, so I guess Panasonic does have some US market penetration!)

As others have said, don't get so far ahead of yourself with gear purchases. Gear comes and goes. If you're - as you say - "just starting to enter the DSLR world," a GH4 with a full set of Voigtlanders might be more camera than you need or want. You say you're worried about shallow depth of field - have you any experience trying to hold focus on a subject shooting at 1.8? Or 2.8? Or 4.0? It's not as instantly simple as many of the films you're watching would have you believe!

Don't fall into the trap of thinking you can't make films or shoot excellent photographs unless you have the newest, hottest camera and gear. People are and will continue to be making INCREDIBLE films on the GH1 and 2, using nothing more than the kit lens and a monopod. Buy what you can afford - if that's a GH4, so be it, but understand that it won't make better movies than will a GH3 (or any other camera, for that matter).

I'd wait for proper raw support before making any conclusions.

Did you try with GH3/GX7 files? I'm curious if it shows the same. Might be a software problem.

Maybe send Iridient an email, they might have a clue why this shows up.

Curious! Just downloaded the same file. In Iridient, all the black spots are still there.

Hmm. Maybe it's an Iridient thing, as I've been thoroughly mocked elsewhere for not assuming from the get-go.

    Thanks for your help, Julian!

Also, as a quick aside - any harm in running pixel refresh more than once? I've done it a couple times and while I can't see any harm in it (or imagine there being any), the thought just crossed my mind that maybe it shouldn't have been done.

Nothing wrong with this list so far, but why present it like this?

Of course I'd love 1080p96 with supersharp images. But it is understandable that Panasonic has to do some tricks to get so many frames of the sensor. Even though not as sharp as normal 1080p, I think it's perfectly usable.

Especially with shallow dof shots it looks lovely imo:

With deep dof and lots of detail, the resolution doesn't look as good indeed:

Is this a 'problem' of the GH4? Don't think so. I still think the 96 fps is a huge PLUS for the GH4. Which other camera has this possibility??

Regarding AF: I haven't seen any proper tests in video mode. Have seen an example where the GH3 gets it focus faster in AF-S mode, but is that a big deal? In AF-S you are shooting something static anyway, it's just to get the focus point right for the beginning of your shot. How about continious AF compared? GH4 should be better with the new focus system indeed, although I'm not sure if that works for video.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with a list of points that are worth mention, but don't present it like things that are wrong with the camera.

Also Panasonic is pretty open about things like the extra crop. You can see it as a downside, but also as a upside, because it gives you 1:1 pixel readout so no ugly artefacts from scaling.

Do you have a GH4? Or are you looking for reasons not to buy one? :)

I've been playing with the GH4 for a while now. I'll share my video's here. Shot a lot more material, still have to edit/upload it. Will do so in the following days.

Go over to Vimeo/YouTube for all the details in the lenses/profiles/settings used. You can download 4K files or high bitrate on Vimeo.

Cinema 4K mode - sunset and lowlight. The 14mm makes razorsharp 4K images. Also used a cheap 200mm f/3.5 Vivitar lens. Hard to get the focus exactly right and maybe not really suitable for 4K. For the video on Vimeo I used pretty high iso values. Shots with the birds are 3200 for example.

96 fps slomo test: with shallow dof shots it is pretty sharp. I have some slomo sufing shots as well, the resolution looks less good with very detailed scenes.

Short test shot at ISO6400 in C4K.

Anamorphic test with Minolta MD 28mm f/2.8 and Petit Cinevision 1.5x
