I still don't shoot much video on a smartphone. I don't know why but it's almost 100% a stills cam for me, and a very good one too.
I find it very clever though how we are now able to get clean video off a 100MP chip or a 40MP. The sampling has got a lot more intelligent since the days of line skipping. Pixel mix / binning is now not so much the sin it once was, and with Quad Bayer it is actually turning into a nicely oversampled positive with big chunky pixels.
    Stills
Mi 10 is 25MP output from the 108MP sensor.
Mate 30 Pro is 10MP from 40MP... You can have it output the full 40MP RAW DNG. Is that possible with the Xiaomi?
Comparison shots from DXOMark below only show the Mate 30 Pro in 10MP mode.
However it is a very good 10MP mode that looks more like a normal camera at around 16MP.
The Mi 10 25MP looks a bit lower when you pixel peep it - maybe 18MP.
So the difference is there but not as massive as 40MP vs 108MP suggests at 1:1.
I scaled the Mate 30 Pro up to 25MP and did a 1:1 crop compared to same crop on the Mi 10...
    Mate 30 Pro

    Mi 10 Pro

The plants behind them look a bit more natural on the Mi 10 Pro but the difference in clothing texture shows actually an advantage to the Mate 30 Pro, weirdly.
So either it is a soft glowing lens on there, or too much noise reduction?! Or just a bit off on the focus?
    As for the RAW...
I find the JPEGs are often cleaner and more detailed with better dynamic range on smartphones, due to the composite, multi-shot, multi-lens, neural network upscaling, etc. nature of the beasts. But the RAWs do give you some low-fi natural look back and more fine grained noise, less sharpening and less NR.
Raw sensor data at 1:1 from 108MP with 0.8 pixel pitch is always going to be quite noisy and soft... Although big leaps have happened in last few years!
Can you edit such a large file on the phone?
I can with the P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro at 40MP but 108MP would be majorly pushing it!
The big key to all this is the multiple sensors and lenses, composite images and computational imaging.
The cameras should be seen as a system of cameras rather than one.

    Subtly brilliant.
Seems to work with my Mate 30 Pro.
The file that comes out of it is quite incredible really. Definitely cinematic.

^Agreed. Most of my clients don't have a clue what I'm shooting with. Could I get by with a 5D3? Probably, most of my deliveries are still in FHD. New gear can be inspiring though and the features they bring are useful to me as a DP.
    XT2/XH1 has a 0.2x crop when shooting 4K. So you're really at 1.7x instead of true 1.5x APS-C/Super35 like XT3/XT4 has.
Again, no client would ever notice that but it does make a difference when composing.
I personally skipped XH1/XT3 coming from an XT2 but will probably pick up an XT4.
I just love those dials, overall IQ and lack of OLPF on X-Trans sensors.

I fully agree, for all of us who are working professionals means we need to think about the business perspective of any purchase.

When I buy a Panasonic G85 later this year it will be purely a hobby expenditure, just like buying a set of golf clubs would be, thus the price / benefit / ROI doesn't matter. So long as I like and enjoy it, plus I can afford it.

While if I buy some $5 pouches to protect my "G3 IEMs" which I hand out to the director/scripty/clients/producer/etc then those are clearly a business purchase for me, and I can easily see a positive ROI from them thanks to their low low cost and the protection and professionalism they'll provide my "G3 IEMs". Thus I purchased these instantly when I first read about them yesterday.

But if I buy a new Lectrosonics SRC, then maaaaybe I can convince (fool?) myself there is a positive ROI somewhere in the loooong term from owning a fourth Lectrosonics SR

While if I was to buy an Aaton Cantar X3 recorder full kit (with Cantaress / Hydra / etc) then I know my ROI is going to negative on that! That isn't a smart business decision. I'd lose less money buying that set of golf clubs instead.

Now to bring it back to the wedding business, and to stop talking about the sound department, did you get any more clients due to filming with a X-T3 instead of an X-H1? Did any of those clients you did get, did they pay you more because you had a X-T3? Did the X-T3 save you time? (remember, time = money)

I'm going to take a wild guess and say the answer to all those question is a no.

In fact, just maaaaybe the X-H1 is a superior camera for weddings than a X-T3? As due to the huge amount of footage taken, often 8bit is preferred over 10bit (thus the X-T3's big advantage is negated), and due to the nimble handheld nature of shooting weddings the IBIS exclusive to the X-H1 shines through as a big strength of the X-H1.

Perhaps you could have gone all of 2019 without buying any cameras at all?? Or maybe only a very small purchase.
For instance, hypothetically speaking if you just had only 2x X-H1 but already have a spare Ninja V lying around then there could be a good positive ROI from getting the cheap X-T200 (or X-T30) when they were announced. As the Ninja V unlocks unlimited record times, and a third camera would add a real tangible benefit at a low low cost as a locked off wide to save you in the edit when both the A & B cam gets compromised during a wedding (sometimes just due to bad luck, someone walks across one camera, and from the other camera angle the bride is looking ugly in that moment). Or just simply to improve the edit! To spice it up by cutting to another angle now and then.

4K on the A7R IV at 60MP is actually very good, it's a nice image. D850 from 46MP also very impressive. Does it pixel-peep as well as oversampled 6K? Is it as good in low light as an A7S? Not quite, but within the normal usable window where 90% of shots are it is closer than you'd think and up on the big screen it looks great.
I see the EOS R6 having better 4K than the EOS R5.
On the R5 it will probably be pixel binned 4K in full frame mode. If it is oversampled from 8K I'll be surprised, and if oversampled from 6K it'll have a crop.
Rolling shutter in 8K will be something to watch out for. It'll probably be quite bad, if you look at current fastest electronic shutter (Sony A9), that is a 24MP chip with stacked DRAM. The 'normal' 24MP chips have quite bad rolling shutter in 6K full pixel readout stills mode. So either Canon has a very fast running sensor the likes we have never seen before, or there will be a big trade off somewhere.
That's why I think its sensible to wait for the R6 specs to come out. Maybe wait until June to make a decision.
As per the R6 rumours, 1D X III specs in a mirrorless camera for $3000 would be very attractive, especially if they keep internal 5.5K RAW in there.

Since the XT3 and XT4 are so good, they should just go all out with the X-H2 and make it first and foremost a video camera. Make it an XC-15 style camera (or a smaller C100), with modular XLR adapter,  internal NDs, all the video codecs, timecode, etc etc - plus the things people don't believe belong in a cinema camera - like IBIS.
Go right up against the lower end ($2,500 - $4,000) cinema lineup that Sony, Canon, and Panasonic have abandoned (other than the S1H, which is still a hybrid mirrorless photo camera).
Finally give the X-Mount a reason for their beautiful X-Mount cinema zooms and great mini primes. Make the ultimate doc/journalist/one-man-band camera.

I think Fuji is smart to hold off on the X-H2 and put out this "evolutionary" XT4 as a stopgap. One of the problems with the X-H1 was that it just inherited old sensor and processor tech from the X-T2 and put it into a better body.  So it was a little underwhelming from the start and easily upstaged when the XT3 came out little more than a year later with X-Trans 4 and X-Processor 4.

Rather than repeat the same mistake, they're putting out the X-T4 with IBIS and new battery giving X-H1 owners a viable upgrade path (imperfect as the ergonomics are) while buying themselves enough time (maybe six months to a year) to perfect a new X-Trans 5 sensor and X-Processor 5 for the X-H2, which will establish it as the true flagship. All models after that will inherent tech from the X-H2, including the X-T5, rather than the other way around.
Will they lose some customers along the way? Maybe, but it will pale in comparison to what they will gain with the revolution of X-Trans 5 and the rebirth of the X-H.

    Edit:
"Full specs on Canon's site says 24 fps for 4k, and 60 fps for 1080p."

    That's somewhat less bonkers.

But still, surely you'd just rather buy a Panasonic G9 instead for roughly the same price?

This is my first post here so hi to everyone.
I must say the R5 is great news for all of us that started filming dslr with Canon. And most of us do not care about 8k so much, we care for a solid 4k with more than 30fps and maybe 10bit. As a Sony current user (weddings), i would love to be able to get back to Canon asap. I must say that everytime i check in my old files some C100 footage (my favourite WDR profile), i miss it. But Sony gave us easy and inexpensive tools, HD 120 fps, 4k, and in a price that most people can buy. This is the key, the price. And there is a price point (Sony has it) that a camera can be a hit and win the market or stay in low sales. I think arround 3000-3500$ is that mark. In the wedding film industry where i am , its hard already for anyone to beat Sony. Sony managed every of its camera "issues", disadvantages, characteristics to become normal, almost a must for every wedding clip. And got many well know wedding videographers for ambassadors. So maybe Canon should make the "revolution" along with a greeat product give a better price than Sony's. And even so it will take time for other brand shooters to change all of their cameras and lenses and give back to Canon its 5d era. Maybe the R6 is coming to help there, i dont know. One thing is for sure, this year is going to be a battlefield for Canon and Sony. Who will win? The one that gives the most and cost less.

In my view it just isn't an X-H2.
The X-H2 body feels twice as expensive and twice as robust as an X-T3.
It feels like Fuji took the safe and cheap option. Definitely not a bad camera but I need that X-H2 at some point. They better not have cancelled it.

Good to hear that the S1H sales are exceeding their expectations! (I wonder if the $99/week rental of the S1H was a signal of slow sales, I guess not!)

Also was surprised that up to nearly a THIRD of S1 buyers are also getting the paid firmware upgrade!

Interesting comments at the end about the hypothetical possibility of Ricoh/Pentax joining the L Mount system.

Really hope that all the R5 expectations be fulfilled.

But it is interesting that all after these years of crippling, everyone is believing in a magic cam from Canon with amazing specs, and even already stating that will sell all their gear to come back to Canon...

I think that a more cautious approach would be wise, and hold the excitement until the specs are confirmed.
