not a huge fan of the video, but,... the work involved was impressive and the song itself is pretty good.

Thanks for the review Andrew, great read!

Really excited to see what June 3rd is all about! An EF Speedbooster with electronic connection would be amazing. I've had my GH4 for about a week now using a focal reducer that does the job, but aperture control and IS would be nice.

Here's my first test, shot the day after I got the camera and could put a lens on it with the focal reducer I got off of Ebay. Tried out the VFR mode and I must say I'm really impressed. My expectations were a lot lower after reading people's opinions and watching their tests. So excited to see what this camera is capable off

As soon as you use someone elses work on your video without permission it is copyright theft - thats the law
its noting to do with creating something new or influences  - you can be inspired to write your own music in a similar style etc then do that its legal to be inspired !

by taking a sound recording that belongs to someone else it is just copyright theft.
Sound recordings have a monetary value to who ever owns them and created them.

the thing is Cold Play or who ever probabaly dont want any of us to use their recording on a video and thats their choise , just because you are I like some music doesn't mean we can just use it , the band have a say its their work .

for instance in 1996 Michael Jackson asked me to remix his song 'They Dont Care About Us', it took us (Love To Infinity) 14 days to do the work for Sony/Epic his record label - we got paid for doing so , His record label OWN the sound recording ...not me .
Even I cannot use this song on my video I made that I want to upload to Vimeo , even though I legally worked on the record and have Silver Disc on my Lounge wall from the sales it achieved , I dont own the recording Sony Epic own it - I cannot use it - yet my name is on the cd !

I completely agree. Especially since the word "business" and not "hobby" is included in the sentence. Depending on how much money you charge or generate from your work, you have to adjust your budget accordingly. Just like you can't always afford to shoot with an Alexa, if a project is small or personal you can always resort to Royalty Free, Public Domain or Creative Commons music and leave the 3K$ licensing fees for commercials.

I'm only concerned with human/bot ratio in Vimeo's policy. I always use properly licensed music in my projects and it would be trouble if a client has problems to upload it to Vimeo just because it is "flagged" by software without even giving you a chance to send them the license certificate.

Legitimate question to you Andrew, not trolling here. Would you be okay with me downloading footage that you have shot and re-editing it or repurposing it somehow for my own creative use without permission? Uploaded to vimeo for as a personal or experimental project

As a musician turned video guy I'm not at all opposed to this. I hope that this encourages cinematographers/film makers to go find local musicians and work with them. I sincerely hope that it does! I started shooting a personal documentary on a local coffeehouse about a month ago, and two local musicians were practically begging to help score it. There are tons of musicians out there, just as there are videographers. Much like the video industry, it is now easier than ever to create music at home on a limited budget.

Of course having the ability to write my own music makes this a non-issue for me, so I do understand why it is frustrating to so many. The way I see it though, the opportunity for more collaboration should only lead to better creative potential!

I make 3-4 wedding videos each year.  The couples I shoot choose their own music for very particular reasons, mostly some kind of emotional connection to a song.   It might be the first song they danced to, or a song that was popular when they first met, ...
What matters to them is that it's THAT song.  NOT a song that sounds a bit like it, or has a similar vibe, or a cover version ...

What I have been doing until now, is use that music in the wedding videos (including the online streaming versions), AND include proper credits and a direct iTunes link to the song(s).
This is the best I can do right now, since publishers simply don't care about clearing songs for this kind of use.  Believe me, I have tried, and have never ever received a reply, let alone a quote.

I would be very happy with an easy, accessible online system where you can pay for sync for popular songs.

For all my other work, I find plenty of material at themusicbed or even the Vimeo music store.

it's remarkable how the secondaries come out. I secondaried the skin, and considering the compression it was jolly clean

It must be due to beyering at 4k not 1080p

    Nope! I just ordered a C100 :)

Fantastic 1080p, super easy workflow and turnaround time. Great image, sound, and NDs. If by some off chance I do ever need 4K I'll probably give the A7S a rental

I can't help but think using something like a C100 would give you a better quality image with a similar price and setup with a lot easier workflow. The full-frame look is hard to beat, though.

    Sorry, this test is bullshit.

In this video, the rolling shuter is composed of 4 components that add together:
    1. The A7S rolling shutter (duh)
    2. The raster scan display (equal to ~1/24 or 1/30 s for the 4K monitor)
    3. The unknown rolling shutter speed of the camera filming the monitor
    4. The raster scan display you are watching  (e.g. 1/60 s, with rare exceptions like Lightboost)

    explanation for display skew:

The rolling shutter of the A7S might still be the dominant factor, but I'd wait and see for some real tests.

I don't know, it's very very detailed (zeiss helps here) but has a bit too much aliasing compared to the gh4, and some extra noise for a S35 sensor. Still looking for a real gh4 competitor ;)

Hey, I would love it if you would get the chance to check out a new video that I made. It compiles footage taken of journeys through 8 different countries. It's called "Anywhere, but here" and was shot mostly with a D5200 and GH1 and includes some RX100.
