Be brand agnostic. Shoot with every camera you can get your hands on (without buying it) and it will become pretty self-evident what works best for you. Weigh the expense and downtime related with switching cameras against the improvements that you will get. Sometimes it will make sense to upgrade, and other times it is smarter to stick with what you've got for a little longer. No one can answer these questions but you!

Its a cool app, but its not the stabilization is not THAT great. There is definitely warping all over the place as I walk through the house with it.

Day one at Photokina and first on the agenda is a catch-up chat with Sony product managers Bill Drummond, Ben Pilling and Robbie Fleming who had arrived fresh from IBC. I took a tour of the Sony booth and briefly tried the new Sony FS7 Super 35mm cinema camera for filmmakers!

It is only a small iPhone app for the moment... The first one using this tech.
Giving good results like this is amazing, it can only be better, and will be better on future versions.
That's why I am plaised to imagine a real camera with these stuff and all the new tech that will be inside from then :)

Not sure I can place much faith in this one; stills resolution is much higher, so the lenses actually have to work harder. Cine lenses advantages are in areas other than resolution.

I shot this last week with a broken Olympus 50 1.8 I got for free! The rear element has a big crack (you can see the shape of it in the bokeh!) and I poked a hole in the front element with a screwdriver+hammer combo. Obviously not for every shot but definitely a cool look in the tool bag

Okay, now thats just funny. I guess the proof will be in the pudding once footage starts to hit the web. But I think we all share your suspicions, it'll probably still have moire among other issues.

If you're not rendering on the laptop, then I think the 13" is perfectly fine. I mean, there's no point in buying the 15" if you're going to loathe carrying it, however powerful it might be.

The main advantage for me would be the screen on the 13" rMBP. It's so much better than the screens on the Airs. The denser resolution helps in photo editing too. The new CPUs aren't much faster however. A 2012 is an Ivy Bridge model, right? The current models use the Haswell CPUs, which offer little performance gain, but increased battery life (20-30% increase). The main increase in speed will be from the improved integrated GPU, which helps when editing.

I edit photos and videos on an 11" machine when on the road. It's all about being what you're comfortable with, and my eyes can perfectly take the load from my shoulders in this regard.

You didn't mention the 15" with the nVidia option, so I did forget about that - whereas the difference between the integrated Intels aren't much, the nVidia is a different animal. Does your iMac have a switchable integrated graphics solution? If so you can switch to the integrated one and see how your favourite editing programs perform.

EDIT: Didn't notice you had an Air. Hmm. If you find that slow, then maybe you don't have much of a choice. 15" it is for you!

Personally, I'd just go with the 13" rMBP. Can't stand 15" laptops, though I'm willing to concede that this might be a cultural thing as well.

You really only need to say Nikon, no optical low pass filter and 36.3mp to sell it as a stills camera.  After that even saying the word photograph seems redundant.

I want someone to drop me off in the woods with one of these, a 21mm Zeiss prime, a mule carrying two big jugs of water and a backpack containing a shovel, toilet paper and fifty clif bars.

Good luck to anyone who buys this camera just because it says video all over it.

Dynamic range looks abysmal. Aliasing etc don't seem so bad but it's hard to tell. The acting is just.... well have a look ;)

It all looks very old school DSLR video here. But then these promos always suck.

Erm, just a heads up:  While I know people do edit on Macbook Airs, I'd seriously consider a Macbook Pro with an nVidia GPU if you spend plenty of time in FCPX.  For one-offs with simple editing, etc, the MBA will be okay, but why make life difficult?  :)

I said so in the review sir... Set the dial to M stills mode and shoot movies in there like normal, but with the benefits of the stills mode. Just be sure to set aspect ratio of stills to 16:9 so you get the proper framing for videos.

I actually prefer to use M stills mode for movie recording than the actual Movie Mode on the dial. In movie mode you cannot use AF-S to grab focus quickly on an object and record video with it locked rather than continuous. Also in movie mode the manual focus assist is a bit soft and peaking a quite low res affair. Pressing the shutter won’t allow me to bang off a still in movie mode either, nor can the shutter button be used to record a movie! I have set my stills to 16:9 so I get proper framing of movies in the stills mode. When I need MF I get a crisper zoomed display and when I press the shutter button I can rattle of a raw still. Only at 120fps does the framing change when I hit record in this mode and I lose the option for the cropped ‘Active Stabilisation’ for movies too but the benefits of stills mode for movies outweighs those downsides.

Why get so upset over this? Nikon cameras will never be incredibly desirable for video, as you can only use their lenses on that mount. We'll always have more flexibility with Sony and canon. Why not just let a stills camera be a stills camera :)

We under expose on Nikons to save highlights and can then easily recover shadows or back lit subjects. In real world practice it makes a real difference. I work with a lot of canon fans and when it comes to the raw files out of the d800 or A7R it really shows the weakness in canon sensors.

Too many pixels to do full sensor readout at 30 fps.  The video camera only needs 12 MP for 4K like A7s.  It's a conflict between still and video requirment.

There will always be cameras that target still photographers i(50MP in a couple of years, if not next year).

You can't expect Nikom to give up still customers.
