Nautical got a reaction from plucas in Anyone test Canon R5 vs Canon 1DC?
I have a 1DC and an R5.  To my eyes the R5 is the image that is closest to 1DC of all the Canon cameras I have used (that would include the C100 II, C200, C300 I and II, XC10,  1DX II, 5D II-III-IV and the R).  In “EOS Original” it is very, very close, although I think reds are handled slightly differently.  I have an irrational reverence for my 1DC even though its a 2012 camera.  It was the camera I compared all others against. So when I say the R5 is the closest I mean that as high praise.  And frankly the R5’s 8k RAW and 4K is superior to the 1DC.
I am not super technical  on the color front but to me there was a clear shift in Canon colors somewhere around 2013-2015  (ie 5D III, C100 Mark II and 1DC are prior to this shift and 5D IV,  C200,  1DX Mark II and R are after this shift and they feel different).  The neutral/ eos original matrix didn’t seem to completely even out those differences either to my eyes in the later cameras. For some reason the R5 feels more like a reversion to the older color but in slightly more mature form (and 10 bit definitely helps).   I know some people propose the C70 as the 1DC successor and that may true from a C-line hybrid form factor perspective, but the colors and image seem very different .

No, I can’t find any either. From what I have seen, the DGO sensor is worse than the sensor on the C300 Mkii or the C200. You don’t even need to shoot raw to that look on the C300 mkii - 12 bit 1080p or 4K 10 bit both look excellent.
This is coming from someone who just bought the C70 but has used the C300 mkii on hundreds of shoots. To top it off, my initial tests don’t show the sensor to be any cleaner than the older ones. Kind of a disappointment...

I thought I was quite okay with C300iii RAW, but now I can't seem to find any really nice examples of it.  Seems C200 and C300ii RAW is much nicer (creamy, organic, whatever).

Are there any examples of C300iii RAW films that anybody particularly likes?  Thinking in reference to a possible C200ii mainly.

    1. Some people just don't like the obvious artificial limiting/crippling of tech... they'd like real competition and better products
    2. Some people actually LIKE the boomer-protectionism of the 1980's technology markets. I.e. hacks can just say "I own X or Y expensive camera! You HAVE to hire me now!"
    3. Some people like to pretend that there is something "Magical" about $5000 or $15000 cameras that will give them better results over something like a Blackmagic P4K or capable DSLR. There isn't.

This is the ridiculousness of the situation. Canon is missing out on a BUNCH of sales over this. You see numerous people on forums stating they'd buy if the limitations weren't there but as they are they won't. People aren't stupid, these cameras aren't impulse buys, they're very considered decisions and this news is EVERYWHERE camera people go online.

Canon makes it's money on the glass, all these missed body sales means no high margin glass sales. If they'd just delivered 4K 60 HQ 4:2:2 unlimited int people would be snapping them up and I honestly don't see how that would have hurt their C line much. Canon just got silly with hype-y specs.

His point is moot anyway because the 65C temps return to normal in 2-3 minutes and not hours like the cripple timer would lead you to believe.
If it was 8K recording for 20 mins and then a 5 min cool down before another round of 8K then that’s fine.
If the cool down timer actual was based off internal temperature that would be fine. It’s not. It seems completely artificial and arguably an excessive cripple.

That is certainly in line with the sort of thing I'm not talking about.
It's likely a smaller battery in the R5 so it would likely require a smaller version of what I'm sure we can all agree that I'm absolutely not talking about.

No worries, I promise to keep it secret. No one will know it from my side. I can't say the same for the others here, I'm sorry (Cannot doesn't, but we will on their behalf, deal? ;- )

I am absolutely not saying that someone who had an R5 could use a good old fashioned CR2032 battery eliminator in the camera then bring it out through the camera enabling them to provide a switchable power source to it to effectively remove/re-insert it without taking the camera apart each time they want to reset the recovery time.
    I'm absolutely not saying that.
    Someone else might say that.
But, just to be clear, I'm not saying that at all, OK?

I'd be able to buy all of them and still be complaining about not having the perfect camera. The Japanese cartel is alive and well

Same thing here! I will only buy an RF cine camera as an addition to hybrid camera because it's the main tool for what we do, even though we use video cameras for some projects.

Can’t wait for Porsche to release a new 911 with 300 horsepower and a top speed of 200mph and a cruising speed of 100*

*top speed only achievable on a cloudy, 24C day. Cruising speed is only for a max of 30 mins, except when in 6th gear max cruising time is 15mins. 5th gear allows unlimited cruising time but suspension is disabled and top speed is disabled.

No, it isn't a matter of opinion actually.
It's a matter of objective fact and you're wrong.
Where does it say in the disclosure up-front that the camera overheats in the Wifi menu waiting for a connection?
Where does it say that you only get 5 mins of 8K recording after leaving the camera turned on doing nothing for about 10-15 minutes?
Where does it say that the recovery times are extremely long and that not even applying ice to the back of the camera or freezing the body speeds the process up? It's a completely baloney situation. Electronics do not need 1 hour to cool down enough to get back to normal performance.
You do not have to leave your laptop for an hour if the Intel CPU is thermally throttled.
These are not my opinions by the way and if you want you can go and educate yourself on the factual side of semiconductors.
Is a specs sheet count as "an advert"?
What about the product description at B&H?
It is not an advert in the sense of Red Bull gives you wings.
It is completely unethical to say it has certain specs, but it's defective if you try to use it that way.

For anyone interested, someone finally pointed me to a video showing the 1.6x crop mode footage.  To me it looks very sharp and detailed.   It is at around the 2:14 minute mark.  If  you look at the regular 4k mode before it there is a big difference in the pixelation of the street lights.    Canon's heat sheet claims this mode does not overheat.  So unlike the R you get IBIS and 10 bit internal, and maybe a little bit better autofocus in this mode.   Not ideal for the price, but at least there is a decent 4k mode for longer record times.

Yes, I  am not good at sensor math, but I believe it would be around 1.15 to 1.17 crop--- something in that ballpark.   The speed booster is my game plan when the 4k HQ has stopped working.  With the speed booster you will get close to a full frame look while still having sharp 4k, 10 bit internal, IBIS, great autofocus, Canon colors and no heat problems (in theory).
I  still wished Canon did this right with better heat design (or any heat design at all it seems), but I can live with this solution for now.

I use the Metabones EF to R 4K Speedbooster on the EOS R and you can do some pretty interesting things with it in 1080 and older Gold Ring Canon EF lenses. Shooting 1080 with these lenses you get a wider image circle of the lense so in this example the EF 85 1.8 becomes a 60ish 1.2 with swirly edges kinda anamorphic - like.  With stabilization enabled the image is cropped enough to almost cut out ll the vignetting in 2.4:1. Most of the shots in this video I didn't crop out the vignetting.
I've been experimenting with the R in 4k since the release of the R5 and with the Speedbooster and stabilization on enhanced and these Gold Ring lenses you get a very reasonable 4k 24p - gimbal-liked stabilized image. Will be very interesting to experiment with the 4K Speedbooster in this 1.6 crop mode in the above Chinese video.
