I reckon the did it so the user can play the H265 directly into their Samsung TV's

Looking at the drime5 kernel source I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is actually quite a lot there. I expected that they would probably do like almost every Android phone does and include all the important drivers as binary blobs, but it looks like most of the HEVC encoder driver is actually right there in the open-source part. Of course the code that actually sets the bitrate is in the closed-source camera application, but knowing which functions are used to actually pass the parameters to the driver should make it easier to find where to look in the closed-source part.
Another pleasant surprise was that the firmware update files look fairly straightforward to unpack. I'm no expert in reverse engineering, but judging by a cursory examination, the level of wacky encryption/obfuscation I've seen in the firmware updates for other devices doesn't seem to be present in the NX1 files.
At least that's my impression from browsing the files for an hour or two. It's always possible I could be completely wrong.

Let me know what you guys think !
Ps. I still havent figured out how to render properly, quality is destroyed when I upload it somehow..

Too much time on my hands ... 5 days off in a row for Chinese New Year  Wandered around our apartment all day today ... luckily there's always something half interesting to shoot. Should have probably used some background music but I couldn't be arsed.
EOSHD LOG conversion LUT. Used the Alex Rec 709 profile on FilmConvert (Astia 100) so corrected the flat footage myself first and then put the Alexa profile on top @ around 30-50% for each clip. Used a bit of blur as well. I don't mind this look for street stuff. All hand-held with DIS and IS activated on the 16-50/2-2.8 ... amazingly stable.
I've put 10 clips from today on the Original Camera Files thread a while ago if anyone is interested. It's a 3.3GB DropBox link. All ProRes422 and converted with the EOSHD LogConversion LUT via EditReady.

10 Samsung NX1 files I shot from today.
These are converted to a LOG style with the EOSHD LOG conversion LUT from H265 to ProRes 422 via EditReady following all of Andrew's in-cam settings and conversion process.
Each clip around 3-5 seconds. DropBox folder link is 3.13GB !!
2160p. 24fps. Samsung 16-50/2-28 & SLR Magic Variable ND ii ... all hand held with IS and DIS turned on. Default Gamma DR settings (green set at 95) with sharpening set at -10. MBL = 0, 16-235.
I'd love to see how other people can grade these clips

Guys, I am developer but being a developer is different than being a hacker. A developer works with tools that give them the functionality they need. A hacker may have to invent tools for platforms where such tools are not readily available. If we had a publically available SDK and a method to sign and upload the firmware onto the NX1 I am sure I could make changes to it.

Used my MF Nikkors for the first time and am really happy with them. Also used the Vizelex ND Throttle Adapter and happy with that too !!
EOSHD LOG conversion LUT. OSIRIS Vision X LUT from VisionColor.
    Nikon 24/2.8 Ai-S, Nikon 35/2 Ai-S, Nikon 50/1.4 Ai-S, Nikon 105/2.5 Ai-S. Default Gamma DR settings with sharpening set at -10. MBL = 0, 16-235.

Thanks. Yeah, I reckon the Ai-S lenses give a nice look to the NX1 ... sharp but not too sharp. As you say less distractingly sharp. I was hoping they would look OK as I have a nice little collection already  I think half the fun I'm having with this camera is because of the EOSHD Log LUT. It's good fun starting with a flat image and seeing what can be done. It seems to take well to FilmConvert, OSIRIS & Impulz..

From reading the NX1 thread on Personal View, it seems Vitali really likes the NX1 ... maybe he might be interested. He doesn't seem like the sort of person who would just do it for the money though. He would only do it if he wanted to do it ... if you get what I mean. Would be interesting to just hear his thoughts on the matter in any case.

So the phone hacking guys at xda often have "bounties" for various things, like rooting or unlocking a boot loader. That method I think could be very successful for us. We find an arbiter that we trust, maybe kidzrevil since he started the thread, and pool our money into something like venmo, so that people are actually committed. The bounty would be for something specific like "installable firmware that can increase bitrate to 150 Mbps and increase frame rate to 60fps at highest stable bitrate at 4k". People that want that feature pool their money into that. Once real money can be seen, we might see bigger interest from developers. Of course if everyone wanted we could make the bounty for more or less features... My vote would be to keep it pretty realistic at first.

Just out of interest, what would be the most important thing you guys would like to see a programmer change or add to the NX1? Increased bitrate as mentioned previously?

+1 ... count me in as well with a donation. I'd love to see what some talented people could do with this cam.

Handy tip for testing setups, filters, lighting - without the transcoding step.
Shoot some footage; playback in camera and pause at the frame you want to examine. Hit the Fn button on the camera back; the camera burns a JPEG of the frame.
I've played with this and the JPEG is dead-on with the footage (My camera is set for the best and biggest JPEGs, don't know if this affects the frame capture). Really handy for testing non-motion related stuff without running clips through processing.

Tried the Impulz Cineon to Fuji FPE (D65) LUT with the EOSHD LOG conversion LUT. With the two Samsung S Lenses. Used Filmconvert for some grain and changed the setting to 35mm Academy and also gave each scene some blur. Going to try out my Nikon MF lenses next week after getting the ND throttle.

Shot that with the vizelex nd throttle (it has a bit of a stylized grade)  and honestly for most work I didn't find it to have any noticeable negative impact on my footage.

@ kidzrevil ... I think the 16-50S is a fine lens and if you were only going to have one Samsung AF lens ... this would be it. It pretty superb in every way. As mentioned, I think it's perfect for run & gun street type stuff. AF is usually excellent and the VR is very good as well .. especially with DIS on. The manual focus isn't as nice as an AI-S lens but it's dampened nicely. Feels a million times better than Nikons range of 1.8 primes.

Learning a lot about the NX1 from this thread. Must be the best resource for this cam on the internet.
Tried to make my footage a bit more filmy today. Used the EOSHD Log Conversion LUT with a DELUT (Norwich) over the top. NX1 & 16-50/2-2.8.

Here are the results of internal vs external.
because quicktime (external) takes 0-255 and makes it 16-235 or whatever I adjusted the internally recorded one in premiere from 0-255 to 16-235 to emulate what was happening in the shogun. this doesn't affect the quality of either file as all the information is still there, but it helps them appear to match better (it's actually not exact... which is odd).
so here is the scene as a whole (Shogun then Internal):

here are two power windows (from speedgrade) around the lightbulb and around the statues on the chair to demonstrate highlight/shadow information

and then just a 300% crop comparison (not perfect as he was slightly leaned back, but on this wide of a lens the sharpness shouldn't vary too much)

jpegs aren't a great way to judge, so i've attached original files:
     SAM_0818.MP4 <-internal file
     SHOGUN_S001_S001_T004.MOV <-external file
     Int_Ext Test.zip <-tiffs
    my thoughts:
first, i expected conforming the internally shot footage to 16-235 would make them virtually identical (it did not). when it came in originally, it was very crunchy, but 16-235 made it actually a little flatter than the prores, which I am under the impression takes 0-255 signals and clamps them to 16-235 already. so, not sure what to make of that.
as far as quality goes... the difference is not huge. i would say externally the macro-blocking is smaller and almost appears as less-fine noise, while internally its a bit more exaggerated and chunky (the shadow recovery demonstrates this the best).
highlight detail isn't much different, with maybe a slight edge going to the external codec.
(EDIT) I just noticed according the JPEGs and TIFFs you'd probably come to a different conclusion, not sure why the tiff export did that, but I can assure you in speedgrade there is more detail. i'll upload the internal and external file now for viewing.
while the color kind of appears to be a different,  that's mostly just the not-quite-matched 16-235 making the internal a little flatter... it's really very similar when you end up grading it.
detail (300% crop) isn't much different between the two.
personally if I didn't already own a shogun, i'm not sure this test would convince me it's needed, though if you absolutely wanted the best image... i suppose it gives it a bit of an edge.
