  1. That screen does look very big. Can't tell if it's a tilting screen or not. I really hope it is titling like a D750 and not fully articulated like the D5000 series.

I hate fully articulated screens !!!

Have you ever actually used a Fuji? Because the ergos are quite poor compared to Panasonic. The hand grip is too small, it’s got no swiveling touch screen, the menus can be confusing, it has a nonfunctioning app, the control buttons can be fiddly... The GH5 feels much better to the hands of this video guy than the X-T2.

Dont agree with this at all. Find the ergonomics of the Fuji excellent. Not as good as a NX1, but certainly better than any Nikon, Sony or Panasonic I have used.  Much prefer the ergonomics of the X-T2 to G85 or GH3 or GH4 ... never used a GH5 though. BTW ... I despise swivelling screen so just a matter of taste I guess. Thank god Fuji do not do a swivelling screen :)

Really looking forward to this camera. IBIS, top plate LCD and internal F-Log. All the things I thought were missing from the X-T2 will be delivered :) Should be a nice hybrid cam.

I'm kinda thinking about getting one or both of these cameras (largely because of the 16-50mm f2-2.8 lens, affordability and ergonomics). I'm just wondering a few things..

    1. Is the exposure drifting problem present in all or only some of the units?
    2. Can it be fixed?
    3. Is the autofocus performance the same between the NX1 and NX500?
    4. What would you say is the highest ISO you can film at?
    5. Is the NX1 4k readout speed improved with the hack?
    6. Does the NX500 have Gamma DR?
    7. Any other quirks I should know about?
    8. How are the preamps on the NX1?
    9. Any ideas why the 2.5k hack can't be ported to the NX1?
    10. Is the EVF comparable to cameras like the A7Sii and X-T2?

Glad you are contemplating getting this camera. It really is a nice cam for video. I'm no pro and used it mainly for street video shooting but I loved it. Had two of them at different times and still miss it ... especially it's ergonomics. Not sure why I sold it really as I can honestly say I enjoyed using it for video more than any other camera I have ever owned. Can't find a single one for sale in the used market in Hong Kong now. They just never come up. Have an X-T2 now though and enjoying that for video but the NX1 was more usable IMO. I still might buy another NX1 and 16-50S at some point :)

I disagree with some of the posters regarding using DIS. I found it amazing when teamed up with the OiS of the 16-50S lens. Does crop in a bit but highly effective for hand held stuff. Very very stable footage. You can even use other non-OiS lenses with DIS and it works pretty well ... like with the 45/1.8 which is a really nice lens. Even with adapted lenses.

I never used MF with the 16-50S either ... used to just acquire focus via SAF,  click the AF/MF switch to MF on the lens and hit record ... if I wasn't moving the camera around. Worked well. Can switch the AF/MF switch back and forth during recording and recompose when needed if desired.

The 50-150S is also excellent. Just those two S lenses would almost be enough. Get both if u can. The 50-150 also has excellent OiS and easy to use hand-held especially with DIS on.

Also, something of a surprise was how good the inbuilt mic is in the NX1 ... found it very clear for onboard.

The other thing that made this cam a lot of fun is the EOSHD LOG LUT. Works nicely teamed up with FilmConverts Ari presets. Works well with OSIRIS LUTS also. Well worth purchasing IMO. Even if not using the EOSHD LOG LUT, I found using the Ari profiles of FC better than using the NX1 FC presets. Here's a vid I made using EOSHD LOG LUT and OSIRIS ... was very happy how well it went over the top of the LOG LUT.

The LCD is the best I've ever seen in a cam. Just beautiful and good to use in bright light ... unlike Sony's shit inability to use the "daylight" setting of the EVF or LCD when shooting 4K. With the NX1 you can crank up the brightness and no over heating.

The "Edit Ready" program is a must with this cam :)

Things that pissed me off ... as others mentioned ... can't cycle between using the LCD and EVF once you have hit the record button. Also, wished that you could use SAF during recording but you can't ... always CAF. ISO ... would try and keep it at 800 or under. 1600 was pretty crappy IMO. Maybe the footage is always a bit too sharp as well even if you turn sharpening all the way down.

It has it's downsides but has a lot of great things about it ... number 1 being it's usability/ergonomics. They nailed this IMO.

    Peeps,

I'm four months into a year-long trip around the world and I'm currently carrying twin XT2's with the following lenses: 10-24, 55-200, 18-55, 23/1.4 and 56/1.2. I shoot a lot of stills, probably 1,000 a week when I'm not doing time lapses and such. But I have two dilemmas:

    1. My most used lenses - the 10-24, 18-55 and 55-200 are taking in a lot of dust. Its pretty bad inside and its showing really having a negative impact on my images, especially stills since there's more latitude to push things around in post.
    2. Stabilization, the OS in the 18-55 is really good, but its just a little too shaky for my liking.

I'm currently in Japan and Fuji service told me 10 business days to clean my lenses while my total time in Japan is only two weeks. I had to pass because they couldn't guarantee I'd see my lenses before leaving. I'm also going to be in China in a couple weeks (dusty outside the big cities), Africa later this summer and then Central/South America for the last few months of the year. After going through Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, India and Nepal - I'm sure the places my wife and I are headed will be just as dusty. I can't keep adding to the crud that's already in there.

So I've narrowed it to a couple options that have the blessing of my wife and will rack up some big travel rewards on our credit card: buy mint used copies of my worst lenses and get them all cleaned when I return and sell them off so we wouldn't eat much in depreciation, or move to something that's better protected against the elements. After shopping Toyko's big ass camera stores like Yodobashi, Bic and Map camera I really like the EM1.2, but most of what's sold in Japan doesn't have English menus. I'll be in Hong Kong next week before China, so I can make a switch there. What I feel is probably my best move is to go back to Sony - I shot with the A7rII from the day it was released until late last year before switching to Fuji back to Sony wouldn't be very challenging. I had zero dust issues with my 16-35 and 70-200 after 1.5 years, its really disappointing my X-lenses look so bad after just a few months.

I'm traveling light, about 15kg for all my clothes, backpack, camera bag and backpack, camera gear, 12" MacBook and various chargers/accessories. Not looking to add weight by going DSLR.

Just wanted to bounce options off others to get some other perspectives. I'd hate to switch, but I don't feel Fuji is a great long-term option after what I've experienced. Some combo of a lightly used A7rII and a A7sII or A6500 as a second mostly video camera is what I'm thinking. HK has some killer prices on used gear and new stuff is also really cheap.

    Thanks in advance.

If you want to buy second hand in HK join and use this website. You'll need Google translate but it's an excellent way to buy used in HK. I use it all the time. Tee up a trade and meet the seller at a metro station. You should be able to get a used ARii around 2K USD. Not sure where you have seen a new A7Rii in HK for $1800.

    http://www.dcfever.com/trading/search.php

You could also check "Sim City" out in Mong Kok ... loads small shops with second hand & new stuff at very good prices. It's a great fun place to look around as well.

  5. They constantly miss opportunities all the time by being conservative.

D500 is a classic example and was maybe 4 years late ... people were literally begging Nikon for a D300/s replacement for years and Nikon never delivered. By the time the D500 was announced many were set up in another system. People who didn't even shoot DX felt sorry for the D300 shooters !! Same with many of their lenses. Arrogant & ignorant company.

The last time I remember Nikon being on fire was when the D800/e came out. After that ... nothing.

The D820 & D760 better have everything they can possibly throw at these cameras like excellent 4K and DIS ... not just 3 more focus points and a new way of uploading images wirelessly.

They need a front man that can put a human face to the company ... like Apple & Fuji do. Someone who can speak directly to the Nikon faithful and at least give the impression that they understand and listen. At the moment they seem very distant and more like an accounting company than an imaging company. Roadmaps ... Nikon don't do roadmaps.

Nikon is still alive and OK, but there's no doubt they are heading downhill and fast. They are shrinking. I really get the feeling that this is their last chance, but being what they are (insular) they will not be able to do what's needed to turn it all around ... what ever that is. I really think they need some boisterous American to come in and shake up their culture ... take some risks ... listen to consumers.

  6. Looks like the X-T2 could be the replacement for many NX1 users when then time is right for them to retire their NX1 :)  NX1 users are very loyal and maybe a little fanatical (just a little LOL) so I think they will naturally gravitate to Fuji to find a home instead of Canikon or Sony.

I'm different to most here in that I'm not professional and just do this for fun and 99% handheld video on the streets, but my options are getting less and less with every camera that's released. I simply hate fully articulating screens and it seems every camera that comes out these days has one !! Until I got he G85 I didn't realise how disorientating that screen makes me feel when trying to stealthily film on the street. So unnatural.  The X-T2 doesn't have a FAS thank god so it's at the top of my list at the moment but I haven't made the jump yet. Also looking at getting an ARii again but that's a frustrating camera in other respects (dim screen when filming outdoors, wait for ever for data to write to card, menus all over the place etc etc)

I did go and play with a couple of X-T2s again yesterday, and it does feel like a nice camera but I'm not 100% convinced yet. One thing I couldn't see when in movie mode yesterday when changing settings was an exposure needle on the screen but I'm sure that's a setting somewhere.

In some ways, I should just choose my next camera on stills quality alone because my GX85 is about as perfect as it gets for me for street video :)

What does surprise me every time I play with the X-T2 is how bloody effective the OIS is in the 18-55 for filming. I felt just as good as Olympus IBIS. Amazingly steady.

I reckon Fuji's next big FW update for the X-T2 will include some goodies for video. I'd love to see F-LOG available internal but who knows.

The lens lineup is incredible. Hopefully, the X-T3 will have a touch screen, a new sensor and IBIS.

I think it will have a touch screen for sure. My little Fuji X70 (which can't focus for shit) has one and it works pretty well ... in a limited way.

If they somehow add IBIS to the X-T3 it would be amazing. Could they do this I wonder. Would be such a bonus if they did.

@Dean sorry, I thought that you moved on!

I just see the Fuji as a downgrade on a lot

Of things (touch screen, DIS, I prefer a few lenses of NX, 73minutes continous video with no overheating and no extra battery grip, H265, I do not have to spend any money, as I own everything I need on the NX system) and the 16-50 2-2.8f lens is keeping me tighter to the NX system, plus the brilliant 10mm 3.5f fish eye, that I use with NX3000/NX500 instead of a gopro camera for various shoots.

If anyone can answer my previous questions would be really helpful.

Maybe the X-T3 will finally be there, but if you manage to use one, let us know.

I have only one friend owning the camera, but I won't see him until this summer..

I don't think the X-T2 would give you anything over the NX1 for video. Maybe better OOC colours but that's debatable. Fuji has a much more complete set of lenses which will continue to grow as well ... unlike the NX1. As mentioned, I never liked the stills it produced though ... found them very flat and bland. Much prefer what I see from Fuji. NX1 was definitely ahead of it's time. Would have been interesting to see where they would have gone next if they hadn't pulled the pin.

@Dean sorry if you have answered that before, but can you say a few cons and pros of the Fuji vs the NX1?

What about the 16-50S vs a similar Fuji?

For a lot of NX users, Fuji is closer to our needs than other mirrorless offerings, so I would like to hear a few words for someone that have done the "Pass-over"!

Also, my impression is that there isn't any native Fuji fish eye lens, am I right?

What other fish eye offerings exist?

Are there any active adapters (Canon/Nikon)?

    Cheers.

I can't answer that as I don't have the X-T2. I'm having a hard time deciding which camera to get :)  The NX1 & 16-50S was outstanding I thought though for video. Never liked the stills it produced though.

They are wrong, go into menu, Movie, Movie AF Mode, Area or Multi. Choose Area for the focus points. Done!

Thanks !! I've left the shop now but will try again soon.

    Salespeople are always wrong !!

  10. 6 minutes ago, jonpais said:

Factory settings don't show the focus points for some reason. You have to go into the menu and enable them. I've been trying to find those settings for the past ten minutes to no avail, but they are available in AF-C and AF-S. Can't a salesperson there help you?

Hey Jon. Yes, three of them tried. The focus point is indeed there but as soon as u switch the dial to movie it dissapears. Went into the AF setting and and set the AF point to show but still not there. They said there is no focus point once u are in movie mode but I doubt thats thats case.

    Thank you for trying.

  11. Just spent 10 mins in a shop with this cam in movie mode and i can not make the focus point appear. Tried lots of different settings.

I'd like to at least see the focus point and move it to where i want it on the screen with the joystick and aquire focus before I press record.

Lools like in movie mode there is no focus point in the screen at all whther the dial is turned to AF-C or AF-S.  Is that correct?

    Cheers.

  12. Thanks @jonpais & @Trek of Joy

Looks like AF-S works a bit differently than on a Pana. I just hope it doesn't default to AF-C after recording after I've set the initial focus with AF-S. The joystick in AF-C might be good sometimes. I'd always use MF if given he time.

Fuji will probably keep looking after this camera with FW updates which is comforting. Maybe internal F-LOG one day :)

  13. 12 hours ago, jonpais said:

There's a switch on the front of the camera to select between AF-C, AF-S and M focus. I almost always leave the camera in manual focus and use the AF-L button to acquire focus, that way, I can see the focus peaking when I move around the subject. I haven't used the 18-55mm, but tests I've seen give it around 2.7-2.8 EV, which is average. One of the best I've seen is the Olympus 300mm, which is between 4.5-4.7 EV. The screen does not dim while recording 4K, and you can adjust screen brightness in the settings. How about a monopod? :)

    Thanks Jon.

I hav a monopod but never use it ... any sort of support for a cam during street video ruins all the fun for me. Sometimes we go to one of the islands here or to the countryside and I'll bring a tripod & fluid head but not on the streets.

I was really surprised just how stable the 18-55 was. Going by what I saw on the screen it looked more stable than using my NX1 with the 16-50 with OIS in conjunction with the electronic stabilisation.

Thats good to know I can use AF-S in MF via the AF-L button. Can I use just AF-S and not MF if I want to? Can I focus on something and then refocus on something else while recording?

Good to know about the screen not dimming.

Also, how do you get 1/50? It's 1/60 on the dial.

Sorry for all the questions :)

If I get this cam, I'd use the X-T2 mainly for stills but who knows? My video needs are not professional and I could do most with the 18-55. Still, the ultimate weapon on the streets is the GX85 and a small prime :) I'd always keep that. Might sell the G85 though.

  14. Hello.

Does anyone know if you can use AF-S in video on this camera? Even just to get the initial focus? I couldn't seem to be able to do it in the couple I have played around in shops but I didn't change any settings. Would be nice if you could still use AF-S while recording but I doubt it ... only Panasonic seem to be able to do that.

Also, has anyone used the used the 18-55 OiS with this cam for video? I'd like to know what the stabilisation is like and if there are any examples out there. I've found a few examples but nothing great. It seemed very good in the couple I tried in the shops. I would never ever use a tripod or gimble out in the street so that's not an option.

And one last thing, is it possible to film in 4k with the screen brightness turned up? This is handy for bright days.

    Cheers.

@Dean I completely understand what you are saying. When I had the NX1 I went through Canon FD lenses, Nikkor AIS & Contax Zeiss and they all left me scratching my head. My guess is that the nx1 adds a very high level of in camera image processing that is tailored to the look of their native lenses ! The end result is all the lenses whether nikkor or canon fd all have a same look and softness in weird places and I strongly believe it was because of their image processing. You only see the true look of the lenses when you shoot raw photos on the nx1

on the Lumix cameras I believe there are no extra image processing going on UNLESS you use one of their native lenses which have features like diffraction and shading compensation etc.

im using the same nikkor lenses I owned on the NX1 and even at the same super 35mm crop the lenses look way different. Im excited to see how they will look on the gh5 which will hopefully have no in camera image processing in its VLOG mode.

I honestly don't have time tot do A/B testing but I will consider it. I do own a lumix pancake and the nikkors and I prefer the look of the nikkors. The lumix pancake looks extremely enhanced I had to slap a black pro mist on it to soften it. I don't like the look of the native lenses and I am keeping the pancake lens just for the portability and to use with the slr magic anamorphot if I do actually decide to buy it again

    Ok, thanks.

If you do get a chance to compare the look of a Nikkor to a Pana lens on a G85 it would be much appreciated :)

    Cheers.

  16. I'm not doubting some vintage lenses have a different look when used with modern cameras, however when I used my MF Nikkors on my Samsung NX1, I could not really see any difference compared to using native "S" lenses. Sharpness, colour and contrast were all of a very comparable level. The lenses I used were 28/2 Ai-S, 50/1.2 Ai-S, 105/2.5 Ai-S and 180/2.8 Ai-S ... all of which are incredible optics.

I've been shooting MF Nikkor glass (photographically) since the release the D700 until now and I can not seee any real difference most of the time between these lenses and the modern Nikon lenses I have such as the 1.8 primes and the 24-70/2.8 etc when shot on a Nikon camera. They all seem to have an almost identical look & colour signature. The only Nikon lens I've had that was not identical to the rest was the 58/1.4 which IMO has a different look.

I have never used my MF Nikkors on a Panasonic camera so I just can't compare the image to native Pana lenses.

Also, if the MF Nikkors look more organic on a modern Panasonic, I'd wager that the ultra modern Nikkors are also going to look organic because IMO there is little to no difference between the signatures of the AF modern lenses or the older MF Nikkors :)

@kidzrevil or anyone for that matter using MF Nikoors on a Pana ... , I'm not disputing what you all say about the image looking more organic using MF Nikon lenses because I never tried, but can you show me what you mean by them looking different (organic) compared to native Pana lenses ... say on the same Pana body settings like default Natural or Standard? I can not find any of these tests online. I'd be really interested to see what the difference is before I spring for a Metabones Speedbooster.

On the Samsung NX1 they didn't look more vintage or organic at all. They looked super sharp and had great contrast just as they do o n my D750 or D800e ... they didn't look vintage or organic at all.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my MF Nikon collection (around 15 lenses) but having an organic or vintage look to the was never part f the appeal. I love these lenses because I love the tactility of manually focusing in photography along with the build quality, aesthetics and price of these lenses :)

    Cheers.

  17. You are doing well expressing yourself considering English is not your first language !! It must be difficult.

I had the NX1 for a fair while and now have the GX85 & G85.

I think keep your NX1 and get a GX85 as well. The GX85 will be a lighter (and very capable) alternative. Maybe get a 15/1.7 for the GX85 and use it those times you don't want carry the NX1 and heavy "S" lenses around.

    Cheers.

Edit: Just realised you sold everything :)

    Maybe get a G85 and 12-35 !!

I think the close up from your wife look great, almost has a full frame look. It's a fact that these lenses get very soft wide open, at least from what I read in reviews but I prefer to have it like that because when you shoot close ups from faces it also hides skinimperfections better and gives more smooth skin which woman in particular will appreciate :)

If you shoot from a distance then f0.95 doesn't make much sense to use so you normally would close the lens a few stops anyway, unless you are shooting in the dark. I do have to say it doesn't look as bad as I expected, your shots look pretty sharp compared to the very soft look I often see in films shot with a canon 5D

I was looking into getting a voighlander or slr magic lens but when it comes to price there are some hugh differences, in Belgium that slr magic 25mm lens is 1000euro but in the uk I can get it for 630euro (21% vat included in both cases), the voightlander 25mm is 950 in Belgium and 750 in the UK.

    That's crazy pricing !!

I paid $3,800 HKD for it which is which is 460Euro. Why don't you just buy it from B&H ... $500 USD.

Luckily SLR Magic is a HK company. The lady from SLR Magic met me at the metro station near their office and sold it to me :)

I must confess though, for street stuff, I reckon I'd mis a lot of shots with this lens because it's manual focus. Usually I just have the cam in AF-S, aim, acquire focus, press record then turn the ND or adjust ISO to get correct exposure and I'm off. Manual focusing is hard on the street. For controlled shooting no worries.

I'm getting a second hand 25/1.4 Panasonic tomorrow for $2,100 HKD which I'm looking forward to using. 50mm FOL is a nice length for street. Been using the 15/1.7 for a couple of months now and it's a bit to wide a lot of the times. The 25/1.4 will be a nice lens along with my 15/1.7 and my 42.5/1.7 ... a nice light trio for the GX85.
