    crazyrunner33 reacted to gt3rs in 1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6
I have a R5 since October 2020. I had a 1Dx III from march 2020 until two weeks ago, sold it to buy an additional R5.
Never used an R6 so I cannot comment on that.

I basically have 2 custom settings that I use for video: 8k RAW Light 24-30 fps and 4k 120 fps Clog (rarely use Clog3). Rarely I use 4k HQ IPB with no log if I need to give the video for some quick and dirty usage without any further processing.

R5 is imo a much better camera than the 1Dx III:
8k RAW is better that 5.5k RAW not for the resolution (although it give some more room for post zoom and pan) but mostly for the much better rolling shutter 15 ms vs 29 ms
4k 120fps is way way better than the junk 1080 120 of the 1Dx III.
Crop quality is a tad better
    Lightweight, better on Gimbals
Smaller to pack, basically I can take 2 R5 in the space and weight of a 1Dx III, if you add the insane big charger of the 1Dx III you can take a gazillion number of R5 batteries…..
Flippy screen much better on Gimbals and in low angles
45 mpix much better than 20 mpix for photo
    Has zebra
IBIS, IBIS + IS lens allow me to film quite a bit without a tripod, very handy for filming while backpacking for ski, mtb, etc…..
    EF-RF Adapter with VND

    1Dx III is better in:
    No overheating
Initial AF acquisition with long lenses but only for photos in non liveview mode.
Has 5.5 RAW at 60fps but no AF
    Longer battery life
    Same dual card type
More rugged and better weather sealing

The biggest gain for me with the last firmware is the RAW Light that basically give me almost 2x storage. I’m a fan of RAW as it give me more flexibility in post than Clog and Clog3…. is probably me not doing it right but for me is a night and day difference RAW vs. Clog how much more post processing I can do and fix mistakes. Bonus that on my PC the RAW Light file are much easier to edit than 10bit Clog ones.

At the end the only question is if you need long takes and in case that things go south can you live with 4k SQ if the camera would overheat?

In my case it has never overheated in 8K RAW Light in my usage (but it will eventually happen). I got at the limit a couple of times at 30-35° C under the sun shooting at 4k 120 fps, this is the mode that seems to overheats the most.

From my experience, I have noticed I get a more richer and robust footage shooting  User profile (All sections dialed to 0) better than shooting C-log on the EOS R and 1DC.

We have YouTube on the TV and not seeing the toxic comments section makes it ten times better.
However, thanks to that "helpful" algorithm my hitherto discreet interest in the Leica Q2 has been headed off at the pass by the other half, alerted as she was by review videos of it being plastered all over the front page after I'd made the mistake of watching one.
So, yeah, aside from all the sinister stuff,  YouTube is also a grass.
And no one likes a grass.

crazyrunner33 reacted to etudiant in Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating timers, workarounds, and Magic Lantern
Iirc, various computer graphics cards operate at well over 65 degrees C, with peak temperatures over 80 degrees C not unheard of.
So Canon is at least being very conservative in their 'safeguards'. as well as really sloppy in their management of the recovery times, because those seem entirely disconnected from the actual temperatures.
Imho, this festering uncertainly does maximal harm to Canon.
They would have been better off to say up front that the R5 was not a tool for professionals, people who should be using a C300, but just a stopgap for use in a pinch. Now there is the impression that the entire product line is an elaborate scam, with features blocked or included because of marketing dictates, rather than engineering and economics. As Intel has discovered, that approach works until it does not, but then it is a long way back...

The only heat issue I see is the CF card getting hot enough to potentially harm someone when handling it(there's regulations for this type of stuff). As noted in the article, the EXIF reported a peak of around 63c, and they didn't observe any components reaching such temperature. The hottest spot was the CF slot after the update, it hit 57c and the card was 52c. The sensor was 48c.

Probably not, because Canon uses  in-house manufactured chips on ancient technology/nanometer standards. That's why their sensor and codec performance always trailed the competition (particularly of big electronics manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic/Matsushita) in the past.
Now they're apparently overdriving their technology in a desperate attempt of trumping their competition on the spec sheet/feature list.

Sorry, but you have cabon emission confused with particulate matter emission. The United States produces around twice the amount of carbon emissions as India and around China produces around 3 times the carbon emissions as we do. Per capita, China's carbon emissions is about on par with the United States, India's per capita carbon emission is significantly lower than the United States.
When it comes to particulate matter emission, India and China is still producing magnitudes of PM more than the US, even on a per capita basis. Today's clean burning diesels(even the cheating VW diesels) produce around 100 than the tier 1 emission compliant engines of a decade or so ago. The carbon emission output has remained almost the same despite the massive reduction in PM. That's why the air quality in the US has made incredible improvements over the last half century, but carbon emission rates have hardly changed.

What was up with some of the sites saying there was around a 500 dollar price drop on the P6K and then deleting the articles?
The text still populates in a Google search description for Cinema 5D, but they deleted the article.
New Shooter was reporting the same thing.

I checked BH Photo and it is still $2499, maybe we will see a price drop tomorrow - first day of IBC. Seems like a good move for Blackmagic to make though I don't think they needed to lower the pock to $1036 to sell it, but still great news for those how were  considering purchasing either one.

Your crazy as hell. Sony OWNS the Broadcast industry. This A7 stuff is just peanuts to them. Bragging rights. And guess what, they have damn near buried Canon and Nikon. They probably make more money off of just the Sensor business than Canon makes on everything as of late.

One thing I don't get is the whole Crimson Cult suing anyone that dares tread on raw recording when there are a number of cinema cameras that record raw. They can patent Cult-Code as a proprietary format, but anyone using Prores or Braw would be free to run wild, much like the ARW, CR2, NEF and so on for stills. Unless I'm not seeing the whole picture in terms of what the Crimson Cult can actually do to stop anyone from using the above or Cdng.
I'd be frustrated if I owned the Z6 too, but these vague "coming at some point later this year" announcements have become the norm.

I think the GH5 still earns a place in the bag, no matter what else.

I don't think they design and change half of what you think. Read the comments more than this article. About 1/4 the way down in the comments read the comments by a guy named ZM. He seems to know his stuff about this and he sort of sets the record straight. Sony does the heavy lifting on the sensor design, others just get to pick a few things they like over others. They are Far from designing the whole sensor. Maybe just get to modify the top layer a bit, and a few maybe special dates rates,  and that is about it. Plus Sony knows everything they are going to do in advance so they have a hell of a leg up on the competition. Sure they probably can't use that feature for a bit themselves but..

Framing in post is definitely a thing, but I could never learn to shoot wider than what I needed - my framing while shooting habits were too strong!  The extra resolution definitely wouldn't go astray for you either.

The 3:2 full frame 6k is great for the marketing world. We normally have to shoot two or three times for 16:9, 1:1 and vertical video. 3:2 gives us a lot more flexibility.

sparkies are one of the hardest trade skills to get into. I was lucky when I was very young I was a Ham Radio operator just like my father. That opened up a lot of opportunities when I was a lot older. Top pay for a reason, it is dangerous as heck, especially if you are not really good at it, or get lazy. No real room for errors.

Most of the engineers I'm speaking of are ones who passed the PE, not some liberal arts major with a job title. The job market is saturated with engineers coming out of college, but the trades are in high demand with few applicants(mainly due to the death of votech during high school).
With that said, I know a few engineers who broke 6 figure, but I know just as many heavy equipment techs and crane riggers that broke 6 figure. And most of the sparkies are making around 80k.

China was perhaps trusted too much... they are still a hostile power. While I understand that the NSA has backdoors in most smart hardware... including lightbulbs and microwave ovens; the NSA is not considered a hostile power to those living in the western world. It's unlikely that they will steal you credit card information,  or bank account info. China is yet another story. I understand that many here like Huawei phones,  but how many here would like their phone to be used to remotely initiate a cyber attack unbeknownst to them? Such an incident could leave the owner of the device with some difficult explaining to do.
I'll pass, I don't need to expose myself to that kind of liability.
Truly random numbers can be generated on a smartphone by using data from the sensors to seed the PRNG. You can do this in java or kotlin. It's an extra step, which means more time to code. The original issue arose from that fact that the PRNG utilized non-random seed values (serial numbers etc...). If you know the seed value used by the PRNG, and you know the algorithm used to generate the random key, well you can crack the code. It's all in what you are securing and how secure it needs to be.
