The biggest edge for 7D Mark II in video mode is that it does real time vignette correction, chromatic abberation correction and lens distortion correction(with Canon lenses), it basically gives you 99% of the optical performance of an ultra high end cinema lenses. Also it's great for VFX shots since vfx artists don't need to undistort the plates before comping.

For telephoto / wildlife a 7D Mk II with Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 beats 5D Mark III with 70-200mm F2.8L any day, just so much nicer to carry around than that fat bastard
I am using the sigma zoom on the NX1 for 4K at the moment. It is also par focal!

I've got one arriving monday. I also shoot wildlife and nature stuff, but it'll take over on video duties as well. I'll shoot a variety of things when it arrives but based on all of the footage I've seen it looks about on par with the 5D3, if not a hair sharper

Yes they are amazing and very sharp too! I have 3 old Zeiss the Jena 35mm 2.4, Pancolar 50mm 1.8 and Biometar 80mm 2.8 medium format which they actually used in Hollywood I read!! All very sharp even fully open and yes they certainly give you that cinematic dimension and muted contrast, not that the colours are lower but they're just different, vintage and creamy esp the Pancolar. The Flektagon Jena 35mm 2.4f is the best though, probably the best lens ever made imo, honestly everything looks very special through that lens but that's no secret!

You know what guys, either I am going mad or I am starting to see why Canon held off on significant improvements to video like 4K on their consumer DSLRs so far. If landscape photography with a long exposure suffered due to heat, Canon would lose half their customers.

The Nx1 has amazing video quality, heres 2 frame grabs from a 4k video from the NX1 (taken from facebook, cuz I lost the original files).

Ungraded, straight from the camera (once again, taken from Facebook, so its compressed by facebook). I was using the Canon 50mm f1.8 at the time, camera settings were Normal Gamma, -10 sat. -10 sharpenning. You really cant get any better, specially for the price...I had a Canon 600D, and its just another league, even comparing to the D800 video mode, the only thing I'd love would be a Speedbooster to make it "Full-Frame", that would make these cameras sell like hot buns !

Just thought I'd let everyone know, I upgraded from Win7 to 10 with no hassles at all! All my Adobe Apps work, all my Avid Apps work fine including Pro Tools 11 which has a glass jaw but everything works great after 12 hours constant use! Resolve beta 12 works 100%! Quite surprised too and the upgrade didn't mess with my Desktop or files etc everything is exactly as it was except it's no longer Win 7. Apps open a bit quicker, Internet pages quicker, played some Arma 3 too all good!! I recommend it, be very surprised if anyone has problems? my2c!

Best part about the upgrade is it removed win 7 (home) RAM limit (16gb), so now I can use the 32gb my cpu supports and After Effects ram preview will hopefully be better. I just wish windows 10 display scaling was better. At 100% the icons are tiny, and at 125 (the next setting) everything is huge. Ideally it'd be able to do something between those. I've only had maybe 30 mins with it. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Or maybe if/when I upgrade my monitor to 4k the 125% and up will work.

I have been using the Blackmagic Pocket for a while. For me the major advantage is the Dynamic Range / Latitude of this tiny camera.
Its so easy to use and to expose for your shot. Walking trough a corridor from dark to very light situation is when you see the greatness of shooting in a format like the prores or Raw. When you look at the screen and expose for dark part of the corridor and when you go to the extreme light and the zebras are not even appearing on the screen, its great.
I have shot side by side whit canon cameras using the BMDcolor profile or the Cinestyle and we always have to change the exposure not to lose the highlights. And the Blackmagic on the same situation always shines.
Even with a log profile on a 8bit camera when you have a blowing highlight with a very well exposed shot, you lose a lot of information on that highlight not for recovery but for a more filmic highlight.
That new sony camera is a impressive camera. Full Frame with sensor stablization and 4k slog-2 internally, its huge.
But you will have to sell all your lenses and camera and pay 3200 dollars for the camera and a lot more for new glasses. If you need versatility you will have to buy 3 or more good lenses.
If money is not your problem, then its really worth it. full frame is great when you kwon how to get the best with it.
But if you want to keep your lenses my choice from personal experience is the Pocket. Its really a great camera. In some blockbusters they are using Blackmagic cameras to pair with the alexas. Look at that:

Thats how they shoot Mad Max running trough a corridor on the beggining of the movie. They dont chose a 5D, that is more lighter camera and full frame.
They chose the blackmagic for the great colors and gradability of the footages. Its really a good match for the alexas in skintones, etc.
They only use the 5Ds as a crash cams because its has a really rigid body and can preserve the Card and files very well, from a explosion or a car crash...
And the Pocket has the same image quality as the Cinema camera but at 1080p.

    The cons of the Pocket:
High ISOs like the sony A7s ( When i look at a 51200 iso footage from a A7s the hightlights are so terrible not filmic, and unrealistic that i dont know if it really worth it. But i have never grade a footage from that camera so....)
And you have a nokton 0.95 thats really great.
I shoot With the Blackmagic pocket in a very low light streets with a rokinon 16mm f2 and for me it really look very well.

    Battery times
The baterry is really a problem, but yoou can use a externa batery or even buy a lots of then.
I buy on ebay 10 EN-EL20 batteries for 8 dollars each and they are good enough for a day of shooting.
For long time shooting go for an external battery

    File sizes
Even the prores proxy is much better than a 8bit compressed file, it is 10 bit.
If your shot has a lot of movement like foliage you can switch for the prores LT
And if you shoot raw, sometimes i do that: Convert the raw whit camera raw with a similar look to the prores BMD log and render it as a prores for small file sizes and gaining the much greater latitude, colors and grain form the raw file.
With 3200 dollars from the A7r II you cam buy a Pocket camera with lots of cards and battery an even buy the new 10.5mm 0.95 voitglander and have a great low light wide lens.
4k is good but a 1080p camera with good colors dynamic range and latitude worth it, really worth it.

Thats my opinion, choose wisely before you sell your lenses, and sorry for my not so good english.

So here are the lens test I did with my cheap C-Mount, m42 and C/Y today.
    The lenses are:Zeiss Tevidon 10mm f2.0 C-MountComputar 12.5mm f1.8 C-MountZeiss Tevidon 16mm f1.8 C-MountTokina 24mm f2.8 m42-MountZeiss Jena 35/2.8 m42-MountZeiss Jena 50/2.8 C/Y-MountYashinon 50/1.9 m42-MountThey are all shot with identical aperture, ISO, ND, and WB.
They have all the exact same correction and grade.
So the differences is purely down to the lens.

BTW, The BTS was shot on one of them with another camera and is ungraded. Guess which lens?

    http://eddavid.tumblr.com/post/113334610539/the-response-i-was-wanting-for-the-quiet-escape
After a week I finally got the response I really wanted for my short film, "the Quiet Escape" that you can only get from posting something online and having the anonymous bathroom wall writing comment on it:
"I don't mean to be rude because a lot of the shots were decent but hearing you call NYC a shithole made me disinterested .... just felt like a lot of whining. And its not magic most 20 something living in Williamsburg can afford rent they have there parents paying the bills so don't cry for them to hard. I mean why is this even a on here? What did we learn? sorry but Phillip Bloom teaches more in a simple instagram post. We can do better..... Good luck in the country buddy I was born and raised in Manhattan and it usually spits out most transplants eventually so don't feel bad"
This is a good thing.  Comments that are positive are nice, but you need the bad - to feed off of.  That’s probably one of the greatest strengths of NYC.
This comment is the underlying air that exists in New York City that you have confront after living in NYC for a certain period of time.  This feeling that you are never legit, you are never part of it, that you are always an outsider and that people want you to leave.  That you never really fit in, that you're not a true New Yorker and you'll never be one because person X has lived there longer than you.
I dealt with this a lot on a website called Diehipster.com - it was a anti-gentrification website that featured fantasy scenarios where the blogger, Diehipster, would post videos of people who looked like hipsters getting beaten and stomped on, and also a sectio n where he would write a fantasy story of beating or maiming a hipster in a variety of cartoony ways. He was big when the hipster thing started becoming a thing around 2003-2005, or at least his hit counter clocked in at a million views.  He kept the blog going for years, but I think now it's over - maybe he moved on.
The undercurrent in NYC is grumpy and negative, like your grandpa when he's off his meds.  Maybe it comes from the rents raising and the food prices raising and the amount of people living there increasing - a feeling of loss, of being hurt by forces around you.  It makes people grumpy and have that "New York TUDE" that is celebrated in many of films about NYC.
And it’s there and it’s something to celebrate.  So much art comes out of “difficult” situations.  No one made much of anything during the PAX Romana.  Right?  I don’t remember.  I was sleeping in class that day.
Is the "Quiet Escape" really taking a "dump" on NYC?  No it's not, well yes kind of -  but it's not that simple.  It's a study of the city - yes - and it's showing the flaws of the city - but that doesn't mean I don't still love it and love everyone in it, even the grumpy diehipsters.  I love them especially because like me, they are trying to figure it all out.

    Hello,
I wanted to just share a short travel film that I shot on the NX1 (pre 1.20 firmware) of my trip to the southern part of Iceland.
    http://vimeo.com/117027464
I was initially looking at a GH4 to replace my old 7D but opted to wait for the NX1. I wanted another hybrid camera that could do a decent job with stills and video. So far, I'm really enjoying the camera! There are a lot of things to like and a few things to loathe (i.e., rolling shutter, oh my god!).
I just wanted to share and say thank you for covering the NX1 so thoroughly on the site.

Nah it's no longer the case. Digital has superseded it for skin-tones and even dynamic range.
What's the magic to having a film camera on set? It's just a tool. The magic happens in the image quality, the feel, the talent on the set.
