IronFilm got a reaction from Mark Romero 2 in Tascam DR70D and Zoom H5
If a person doesn't need:
5th & 6th inputs.
Time code.
Hirose power connection.
XLR outputs.
Metadata entry.
USB interface.
Flexible file naming.
(& much more)
Then yes the Tascam DR70D could be a worthy lower priced option.
But those other things I mentioned are VERY handy. Some are essential even (such as TC & metadata entry) if working as a sound recordist on bit bigger productions.
But if you just need the basics of a 4 ISO track recorder then the Tascam DR70D will be fine enough for now.

IronFilm reacted to Gregormannschaft in DaVinci Resolve 14 released!
This is insane. I'm editing with a massive smile on my face. No hitches, project loaded my footage almost instantly and editing is an absolute breeze. Moments before, I tried to import footage on Premiere Pro and it took 3 minutes for the previews to even load.
I'm buying the full version.

IronFilm reacted to Andrew - EOSHD in DaVinci Resolve 14 released!
Premiere is extremely poor at the moment.
The Resolve 14 BETA is more stable than Premiere in 2017.
And free... blows my mind.
Downloading the latest Resolve 14 now, and I am sure the performance and reliability is even better.
Adobe should apologise for being so poor, and give everyone an opt-out of the subscription service for a one off fee. Otherwise, the sub service is going to whither and die, people will move back to Apple and Blackmagic. It really is that bad. You can't have such a mission critical piece of software with such poor reliability for months on end.

Just to clarify I wasn't endorsing the 70d over other options, just responding as to if it could fill the functionality required.
With regard to battery life with it, I'm not sure whether this would be a massive drawback when you power it from USB.
This video tests it running for 11 1/2 hours off a cheap 12,000 mAh block with all channels recording and with phantom switched on all of them.
Again, not an endorsement for the 70d, just an FYI if you go that way.

IronFilm got a reaction from Arikhan in Tascam DR70D and Zoom H5
The Zoom F4 is the best buy for bang for buck sound recorder right now from the lower priced options.
The Zoom F4 is insanely low priced (a steal!) for how much it does.
Only if you really need the more inputs or Bluetooth, would I suggest the more expensive F8 instead.
And I'd only recommend the MixPre6 (ignore the MixPre3!! Too crippled for its price) if you really REALLY need that HDMI triggering. Otherwise get an F4.
If you're on an ultra super tight budget, get a Tascam DR70D. But once you own a DR70D, then there is almost no reason whatsoever to own a H5/H6.
Anyway, this is all just a repeat of what I said in my latest blog post:

IronFilm reacted to mercer in Kinemini 4k – whats the story?
Unless I hit the lottery or became independently wealthy, I will never buy one, but you cannot deny the image the Kinemini or Terra are capable of...
The colors are just gorgeous.

IronFilm reacted to silvertonesx24 in Kinemini 4k – whats the story?
I owned a Kinemini and now own a few KineMax.
The KineMax is a significant upgrade over the Kinemini in every way. Obviously resolution, color science, and usability. The Terra 6K uses the same sensor in a smaller format. Dynamic range in the "golden" mode is insane. My DP (owner of alexa mini) was blown away by our ability to shoot subjects directly against a bright sky.
Cineform Raw >>>>>> every other codec out there. Lossless raw at smaller file sizes than Prores and I can cut 6K raw even on a first gen i7.
The cameras are rock solid. Never an issue. Never a crash. I had one big problem on set once not getting it to recognize the SSD, but that was because I was using 7mm instead of the 9mm SSDs that the slot is built for. Yes you have to deal with crappy Chinese support and sending it back to Bejing to fix anything so if that's not for you, don't even consider them.
Now, cinema cameras will be a pain in the butt if you're 'upgrading' from DSLR, so the GH5 and the 5D come out to shoots way more than the Kinefinity stuff. But that's a different argument.

IronFilm reacted to Don Kotlos in Kinemini 4k – whats the story?
Every now and then we have this discussion. I think many underestimate how difficult is for a camera company to establish itself and expand in the world market. From what I understand, Terra has been in great demand. There is a HUGE market just in China for it, and maybe I say maybe most buyers there are actually putting their cameras to work instead of just shooting vlogs on youtube.
Now that being said, if you need a camera that shoots RAW at a low price point now with very good support and you are closer to the US than China, blackmagic Ursa mini might be a better choice.
In any case, there is plenty of very nice looking Kinefinity footage for the ones that are willing to look:

IronFilm got a reaction from Orangenz in News Leak: Zoom F4 with six inputs and eight tracks (is like a new low priced Zoom F8!)
Unless you need ***need*** the HDMI on the DR701 I'd skip that and get the F4 for sure, much much better overall. Or save your pennies and get the heaps cheaper DR70D (which is more or less the same as the DR701 but without the time code input).

IronFilm got a reaction from kaylee in News Leak: Zoom F4 with six inputs and eight tracks (is like a new low priced Zoom F8!)
My blog post on this news: http://ironfilm.co.nz/news-leak-zoom-f4-with-six-inputs-and-eight-tracks-is-like-a-new-low-priced-zoom-f8/ (some of it repeated below)
News got leaked accidentally by B&H that a new Zoom F4 is coming.
I think the Zoom F8 when it was announced was a groundbreaking new recorder in what it brought to a new low price point for soundies.
Now the F4 is even cheaper ($650 vs $1K), and has nearly everything the F8 has! Except for most notably the lack of extra XLR inputs (8 vs 4, thus the names: F8 vs F4. The "F" = field recorder, "H" = handheld recorder such as H1/H4n/H5/H6) and the lack of an app for the F4 to mix on a tablet like you can with the F8. Oh, and in a more minor point the F4 has a monochrome screen vs the 4 color screen of the F8.
But everything else (such as pre amps, and time code) is basically exactly the same as the F8!
Here is the blurb and specs list from B&H (page is currently down, you need to use Google cache to view it):

IronFilm reacted to Axel in DaVinci Resolve 14 released!
This will be very profitable for BM. I don't know if it was very wise to cripple the performance of the free version (no Quicksync supported there), but I guess many will start to see the advantages. 300 bucks (once and for all, no subscription, no dongle) is a price point that won't scare off many. If they continue to improve everything and add features with the same energy they showed in the last years, it will mean hard times for he competitors.

IronFilm got a reaction from TheRenaissanceMan in Sony's new full frame CineAlta camera is announced: VENICE
http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/09/06/sony-unveils-venice-36x24mm-full-frame-digital-motion-picture-camera-system/
"the camera’s lens mount can also be changed to E-mount (lever lock type), which opens up a lot more options for using a wide variety of lenses."
Today marks the end of Sony's FZ mount :-( As a Sony F3 owner it makes me a little sad :-/ But I'm not too surprised (& the FS7mk2 was a small hint), as I half expected this day to arrive eventually.
This does make Panasonic look even more dumb now, because they didn't announce their EVA1 with a locking MFT mount. (As heck, Sony can put E mount into their highest of high end cameras!!)
"The Sony VENICE CineAlta digital motion picture camera system is scheduled to be available in February 2018. No pricing information was given on release."
Reckon I'll be able to afford it with what I find down the back of the couch?

That is because on one hand you have color professionals and on the other people that don't even know how to use picture profiles. Once you know what you are doing, PP offer the most flexibility in terms of color in any consumer camera.

Yeah crazy how good the ursa mini pro holds up next to a F65 or a Alexa mini, especially as they are dirt cheap in comparison.

IronFilm got a reaction from EthanAlexander in LOL Canon... C200 Codec "Upgrade" details announced
Wait.... WHAT??? Are they seriously requiring you send in your 5Dmk4 if you want a simple firmware update??? Shocking!! :-o
Oh wow, up to a FSmk3 already! ;-) :-D
I'm hoping for an a5200, as let's not forget about the little guy!
The C300mk2 seemed to pick up a little bit of traction after it got its big price drop.
Be weird as hell if the C100mk3 has the missing middle codec the C200 lacks!! lol
(but in return of course the C100mk3 will not have raw)
I feel you created this "needs" list by looking at the C200 spec sheet then listing what it is on it? (and not including anything that is not on it)
When you take that approach it becomes very easy to justify your decision to exclude others! haha

IronFilm reacted to EthanAlexander in LOL Canon... C200 Codec "Upgrade" details announced
I did read your list. My reaction has to do with this:
The fact that you don't care about which company you buy from, only that your "needs are met," is the reason that big companies can get away with things like false promises and unnecessary crippling of products.
Important: I'm not trying to say that big companies are bad or the system is bad. What I AM saying is that it's ultimately not in our self interest as video/film professionals to keep buying from a company like this. If we vote with our wallets, then we can force these companies to listen to us and give us better options. In fact, it's in the best interest of Canon in the long run, too!
There are dozens of other cameras that you can use. People have made good livings using cameras that didn't have DPAF or internal raw for decades. You WANT this camera. That's fine. I'm not mad and I don't think you're a bad person or anything, I'm just trying to point out how we can enact change (or not).

IronFilm reacted to EthanAlexander in LOL Canon... C200 Codec "Upgrade" details announced
This is why they'll never learn. They can make false promises and unnecessarily cripple their lower end products and they'll never have negative repercussions. I'm not personally blaming you I'm just using you as an example of the reality of the situation.
I don't care your opinions about Sony and Panasonic cameras, but those two companies actually listen to the community and rarely hold back features on their lower end products.
