TheRenaissanceMan has no idea what he's talking about......
Iso performance is the #1 thing for Independent Filmmaking and working with a budget. The difference of using 3 lights vs 6 is huge or the difference in wattage from 650watts to 300 is basically cutting everything in half. People who have not used both of these cameras simply cannot comment. I owned a GH4 and Sony A7s, GH4 after iso 800 is basically a noisy image and something you definitely do not want to use as you lose even more dynamic range and are introduce all kind of artifacts in your image. You can use a Sony A7s with a perfectly clean image all the way to 6400+ , I mean PERFECTLY clean image like shooting the GH4 in lowest iso setting.

Secondly we have dynamic range, GH4 isn't even close. The ONLY people who say different are those protecting their camera name brand and those who simply never used a Sony A7s.

I will say it time and time again, the A7s is simply the best tool in it's price range, point blank period. I suggest people to rent one before commenting any further.....

Honestly I think I might be on the wrong forum....... DVX100 is a workhorse of a camera and a tool I was able to do A LOT of jobs on, from documentaries. weddings to commercial events for hotels and businesses of the like. I see this as an EXCELLENT option and feel it will do great. Sure having a changeable lens camera is cool for "artistic" work, but for the bread and butter of video productions you really don't use any of that kind of stuff. As noted in my above quoted post, several people I know using Sony Ex3 cameras still for reality shows, cooking, racing , etc. I see this camera doing great in that market and being an amazing tool.
Sure I love my Sony A7s, but lets be serious here and know that is a very very specialized tool and requires a lot of add ons for a shoot, let alone filming and documenting an actual project. This camera has XLR Inputs which is priceless as well + built in ND's etc. Now the ONLY thing I might think is the Canon C100 Mark II could be a better buy, but then again it doesn't shoot 4k like this camera does.....

Have you shot a film? I would like to see some of your work done on interchangeable lens cameras if so....... For the record I worked on many productions where we used a DVX100, HVX, HPX, etc all fixed lenses. Film Maker is NOT about a camera, it's about telling a story through moving pictures.........

You charge $1k weddings , other charge $5k and up. It's all about the market and what you can sell. If you are underpricing your work then of course it's hard to understand, but semi pros to professionals work/earn much more and this is where this camera is geared too. No different than people shooting free Music Videos or working with labels getting minimum 10k budgets, it's all about where/how you place yourself in the working industry. Personally there's NO way in the world I would shoot/edit a Wedding for 1k , when I can make that just editing a simple project.......

Done with the off topic, problem is most people simply just don't understand.......

Non working pros speaking on nothing they know of..... This attitude online definitely needs to stop, especially when enthusiasts such as yourself do not respect professionals being paid for their work and putting out great projects. I would like to see someone here put together a project this fast with more than likely a minimal budget and pressed for time. Acting was not the best, but overall I would say it was a pretty good project and definitely showed what can be done with this camera.

and do you really want a successor to make the older version left with no support & obsolete, and then the same again next year - one year cycles for cameras is a nightmare, and Sony seem to be pushing that - be careful what you wish for

I disagree 100% on your negatives , footage looked great, love the "film like grade" and framing looked great. Would love to see some of your work for comparison.....

    Two things I really want......

    * Blackmagic Pocket Camera in 4k with at least 48fps in 1080p, even if it's only 30 second bursts it would be greatly appreciated
*Sony A7s II incorporating new in body stabilization + tweaks over their first camera

... here's the latest video I DP'd, which makes use of plenty of slow-motion and other film 'cliches.' I love every minute of it.

We filmed it last fall, but the music wasn't mixed/mastered until very recently. Shot on FS-700. Canon lenses. ProRes through Ninja Blade, internal for Slo-mo (I hadn't yet discovered the magic of the 7Q). Some variation of a flat profile, but not quite S-log.

j.f.r. got a reaction from pablogrollan in Canon Rumors says GH4 competitor will be fixed lens in smaller C100 style body

Seems like you're contradicting yourself........ Panasonic will render Canon irrelevant, yet they sell much more......
Panasonic needs to work on their color science with their GH line, something I miss from the older Dvx. No one is going to give up their Canon Slr cameras in favor of Mft format, it's just not going to happen ever...... Canon and Nikon are top dawgs with mirrors cameras behind, even still I prefer Sony A7s and many production companies have been switching from 5D's as we all feel Sony A7s is a much superior "stock" camera.

Outside of aerial work I would prefer many other cameras over the GH4, that digital harsh look just isn't very pleasant at all. GH3 was sharp enough now in 4k it's like pain to the eyes. Black magic worked on Dynamic Range so does Alexa, Red now is working on DR as well. Moving forward Panasonic needs to focus on DR instead of resolution which is what Sony did with tier A7s and imo the best video camera in that price range

Don't worry so much about the iso and look more at the exposure meter on your camera. If shooting in log overexpose by at least 1 stop, if shooting in any other profile (not log) then expose about a quarter less then proper exposure. I've shot perfectly clean 50-100k iso images and didn't really notice noise until after 100k, but up until at least 50k iso it's perfectly clean in Full Frame mode.
Remember the camera can do in noise reduction, I generally think it works great as it only kicks in when it needs it. I would easily push the iso to 50k and have perfectly clean image.

I shot this video around 100K iso at night (indoor train scene) and the intro shots and last final shots (night) of the video were around 200K iso (which is the max I would use)
    Peace

j.f.r. got a reaction from Xavier Plagaro Mussard in Feature film Focus edited on FCPX

No surprise there, FCPX is an excellent editing program, especially after all of the latest updates and native support for many cameras. One thing you need to understand though is all modern editing programs basically do the same thing, no real difference at all between X or Premiere, just slightly different how they work/operate

j.f.r. got a reaction from Hitfabryk in XAVC-S or AVCHD?

All comes when grading and detail of scene, with heavy motion (water) avchd would definitely show more artifacts vs xavc-s as well noted earlier when grading. If doing a normal talking head with your camera on sticks in a controlled setting, no one could probably ever tell.... If shooting a long 4+ hour even I would probably use avchd for space saver, but anything short and best image quality I would shoot all my material in the highest form (Xavc-s)

j.f.r. got a reaction from Hitfabryk in What's the best 1080P cam?
1080p 30/24 fps is excellent in the camera, 60fps in FF mode does have some aliasing though (wide shots). If doing wide shots in 60fps I would put the camera is APS-C mode which is almost perfectly clean.

A7s is a beautiful camera with great dynamic range, a very very good balance of price vs quality, especially when compared to much more expensive cinema cameras.

Sony A7s, Canon 5D III (RAW) or Canon C100 Mark II
I would not settle for anything less.........

Full Frame is Magical, I love it. Aps-C is the smallest sensor size I would use

S-LOG on A7s XAVC-S , this codec is so good you can basically grade it how you want....... As soon as you learn and understand how to grade using RGB curves you will see exactly what it is you need to do. Two frame grabs from a project I am editing which I also shot in S-LOG A7s Iso 3200.
