j.f.r. got a reaction from Dave Maze in Red Dragon? Anyone?
@Lee Kelly  Are you a working professional DP, that is my first question.

I loved RED cameras for the cost, heck I have one in my avatar from a shoot and was amazed and how accessible this made it. Prior cameras costed well over 100k (film) and RED really brought/made this possible for people with low budgets (50k) to be able to use them. Now if you have EVER used an Alexa and more specifically an Alexa Mini then you would know why it's simply one of the best looking digital images from an camera Ever....

Now for us "Poor" folks I will be buying an Ursa Mini 4.6k  for my personal projects and work on any and everything else.

ps. Alexa Mini looks Amazing, Red Dragon looks greta as well, in the end though don't let any camera limit your creativity and shoot your projects on anything you have possible as CONTENT will always be MORE important than any camera you use.... PEACE

j.f.r. reacted to Cinegain in Mitakon Creator 35mm f2. Waste of money?
I do kinda get his point though. There's always people that are going to complain that equipment is too expensive for them. Ok, we get it. He can't buy the 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S lens and 400 USD is a stretch too. What I don't understand is... if that's not your ballpark... then don't look at it and complain about it. That's unproductive. And what I also get is that stuff just costs money, from a designing and engineering perspective. If you want something that's brand new and any good, there's probably some money involved to make it. That's just how it works. Complaining about something that's already fairly priced might be regarded disrespectful to the ones making 'em, although I wouldn't really go as far as saying it's disrespectful to the art in any way, except from the fact that everybody is dealing with the fact something is a certain price and they either sacrifice somethings to get the funds or just forget about it already.
I love cars, especially the fast and exotic ones. Yet you won't see me complain that a McLaren is too expensive. Or even the Audi RS5. If it's not in my ballpark, I'll just have to look at other stuff that gets me from A to B. Can't afford a car, like... any car? Look at public transport! Can't do that either? Take a bike or go on foot! I mean... you want a cheap f/1.4? Get a 25mm APS-C covering C-mount lens from AliExpress/eBay or something already. Or a nice vintage piece of quality glass. Sure I agree. Budget forces perspective, a new way of thinking and resourcefulness. But you've got to explore that. You can't just sit around moping. Be creative with what you've got on focus your energy on the right things. That's all.

j.f.r. got a reaction from jase in Rokinon Cine DS 20mm T1.9 is coming at last!
20MM is definitely a focal length not needed or barely even used.....  Especially not in APS-C and for FF disgustingly wide..... Now for M43 format then yes, but nothing larger.

APS-C 18mm is plenty standard/wide and the next jump to 24mm and 35mm is perfect.  There's a reason why Many FF shooters even shoot 35mm or 50mm and their wide lens is 24mm. Personally I don't like the 20mm focal length at all and can honestly say I would never use it, which is why you see very few prime lenses at this focal length.

Even throughout all of that I still would prefer a nice zoom lens vs almost any prime.... Primes slow you down, having to switch lenses, etc and you can lose a shot. A nice Zoom lens whether photo or cinema would definitely be my #1 choice always.

No, Heck No...... RED simply has a stronger Codec which allows for a better negative. You can grade the "RAW" file pretty much anyway you want it, you just need to know how to light the image.

Canon C300 is an excellent run n gun camera, documentary and for Tv Shows etc. It works perfectly, but the image is what I would say "different" vs something you would see in a film as the main camera. Personally though give me the Ursa Mini 4.6k or an FS5 with the RAW Upgrade and that would be my choice under 10k and probably all the way up to 15k.

Ursa Mini 4.6k imo is simply the BEST looking video camera in it's current price range and all the way up to 15K+ area. Only placing Sony F55 above, Red Dragon, Alexa, etc.

One thing is not paying back a credit card company, loan office etc. due to money lack of wages etc. and another is to STEAL and DECEIVE someone of their money with no intent of repaying them back. I see two options here, jail and fines or you repay everyone back immediately and be gone forever.

It doesn't matter if you have to work 2 jobs, sell things you own etc. Also the thought of you not paying anyone back is really beyond amazing, especially when you stole form them. They have a place for people like you and it's called Jail, I would not hesitate to give you 6 months in jail and several 100's of hours of community service........

If you have that kind of money you are in a GREAT position as $8k for a camera is exceptionally well given todays technology. I would definitely look into the
    *Sony FS5
    or
    *Blackmagic 4.6k

It makes no sense to shoot a project in any lesser camera sub 1080p and limit yourself, I would definitely shoot any and everything at 4k resolution or better.

j.f.r. reacted to OliKMIA in Miami Aerial and Hyperlapse Video
Finally, It was long and painful but I made it after 2 years of work. Here is my Miami video. Enjoy

Unlike cities such as New York, Paris or Dubai, no one ever did a real hyperlapse video of Miami so I had to fix this.

I started this project 2 years ago with hyperlapse experimentation. My first attempts were very bad and most sequence went to the trash bin. It took me a while to capture the hyperlapse sequence correctly (must be very very accurate) and then do the post-stabiliation frame by frame.
Hyperlapse is very time consuming. In average, one second of video takes 1 or 2 hours of work and I don't even count the failed attempts (either I fucked up, light was wrong or something/someone messed with my sequence on site).

    Techniques:

The video is 75% hyperlapse, 5% timelapse and 20% drone and aerial (rented plane and helicopter). I had a massive volume of video and photo (RAW of course) and I only used the tip of the iceberg.
I failed many times during my learning process but I now master the most complex type of sequence such as HDR Hyperlapse of Holy Grail Hyperlapse.

    Gears and software:

    Here is what I used:

    ► Hardware:
    - DJI Phantom 3 Pro with Mars Lite & Mayday Board
    - TBS Discovery Pro with custom GoPro 4 lens
    - Polar Pro Filters
    - Dynamic Perception Stage One & Stage R with NMX controller
    - Panasonic GH4, Lumix 12-35 f/2.8, Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 and custom made gimbal (Alexmos)
    - Canon 6D, Samyang 14mm f/2.8, Sigma 24 & 35mm f/1.4 Art, Canon EF 50 f/1.4, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L,
    - Cessna 172 & Bell-206

    ► Software:
    - Adobe Premiere & After Effects
    - Adobe Lightroom
    - LRTimelapse 4
    - SNS-HDR Pro

    How many pictures ?

Honestly I have no idea of the number of pictures taken and I find this point completely irrelevant. The number of shots and TB of hard drive is not a good metric and does not give any indication regarding the quality of the final video.
What I can tell is that I finally achieved a good ratio of shooting attempts / keeper sequence. When I started hyperlapse I had to discard 80% of my sequence, now I can keep 70-80% of my clips.
I also have a lot of unused sequence that I shot but didn't make it to the final video. I prefer to squeeze the best out of my project and not fall into the trap of "clips stacking" for the sake of it. This video is already long with its 4 minutes duration.

    Aerial Shots & Safety

I used a DJI Phantom 3 Pro for the aerial shots along with a TBS Discovery Pro fitted with a GoPro 4 black. I modded the lens in order to get a longer focal. Some shots were taken from airplane (C-172) and I also rented a Helicopter (Bell-206).
In terms of safety, the drone shots were line of sight only and below 400 feet following the AMA & FAA guidlines. 90% of the drone flight occurred over the water even if it's not visible because of the framing. For the remaining 10%, I flew over parks and empty area with the Phantom. I follow a precise scouting of the place before each flight and perform a thorough checklist.
And because shit happens, I also installed a Mars Lite parachute with a North UAV Mayday board (special thanks to Kyle) on the Phantom in order to prevent any damage/injury is something goes wrong.
Last, I had to notify the airport manager in some places before my flights and I stayed away from Class B airspace of Miami (I couldn't get clearance despite my request).

I 100% absolutely feel you would get new clients with either the C100 Mark II or Ursa Mini 4.6k. You can easily do interviews, documentaries and weddings with the C100 Mark II. Many people do not like DSLR's being used and prefer professional cameras which the C100 Mark II is.

The Ursa Mini 4.6K imo is a specialty camera where you definitely can get work doing Music Videos, Events or even small short film projects and commercials, just need to build up your reel and people will DEFINITELY note the quality.

With lesser cameras like NX1, GH4, etc. People from my experience really don't value those tools and you're looked at like an over glorified hobbyist. A C100 Mark II will cut perfectly as a B cam with a C300 which are used for a lot of tv shows. Make the step and don't be scared, it can honestly be the BEST decision of your life!

YES an 8 nit image can/will fall apart if not exposed properly and pushed in a grade, but so will a 12-16bit etc camera as well. The TRUTH is you NEED to properly expose your image and you can eliminate more than 90% if not all of the gradients.noise, etc found in all of these cameras.

NX1 has less dynamic range + poor iso performance. These cameras are very different, NX1 definitely has more detail, GH4 probably even more, the thing is this doesn't translate to a "nice" image.....

GH4 razor sharp, which makes it look like artificial "sharpened" video that's great for News broadcast, I would say the NX1 is in the same vein as the GH4.

A7 cameras by Sony are more in vein with Canon 5D's, more sharper than 5D but not as "cynical" sharp as NX1 and GH4. Personally I still like the 5D Mark III, great colors and a well accepted image everyone likes. Truth be told I worked on a project shot on RED and the client liked the shots of a 5D Mark III better......

Sharpness/Detail is not always your friend........

Thanks, project was shot in ProRes Film Mode and colored from scratch in Resolve (No Luts used). From my experience with the camera RAW introduces more Aliasing and Moire, which is why I shoot ProRes unless I NEED the RAW workflow for color temperature or maximum dynamic range.

Truth is though ProRes imo is my preferred method of using the camera as I feel the compression eliminates Moire and Aliasing by a lot compared to Raw.

Dynamic Range, Richness and Color of this camera imo is amazing and no other camera in its class is even close.......
