Now that I have an DCC8 dummy battery clone, working just fine with the Sigma fp, a question to other camera owners:
Is there a way of safely and reversibly removing the battery compartment door of the camera?

This is an interesting bit in the current times - that the fp can act as a standard webcam via its USB-C interface and be used for live streaming and teleconferencing without any extra hardware.
So here comes the question: To do that, one would normally power the camera from an AC adapter - which is not included in the standard camera package. Sigma offers the SAC-7P as an extra camera accessory which consists of an AC adapter + a dummy battery for the camera. But it costs around $/EUR 80 and is hardly in stock anywhere.
Since the Sigma fp's BP-51 battery is principally the same as Panasonic's DMW-BLC12 (yeah, the same battery as in the good old GH2...), I wonder whether one couldn't just buy a Chinese third-party BLC12 dummy battery + AC adapter which are readily available on a number of web shops (Amazon, AliExpress...) for only about $/EUR 28.
This of course would be handy for other shooting situations, too. And since some of those BLC12 third-party dummy battery adapters work with USB power, this would mean that one should be able to power the fp with USB power banks!
It sounds good in theory, but I wouldn't want to brick my camera if it doesn't work in practice...
Has anyone here tried this out yet?

I'm not sure if this can do rec 2020, and its pc only.
I'm happy with resolve and after effects for conversion.  ( after effects had support for lens profiles )

I'm interested in learning how to best use Resolve with my FP footage. Not the uber deep technical stuff, just practical real world advice.
So far I've been getting nice results using default DNG, also BMD Film settings in a rec709 (non ACES) workflow.
People on Youtube like 'Crimson Engine' are helpful because they are testing all kinds of different combinations and discussing the results. If there is anyone else doing that I'd be happy to know.
This thread has been very helpful too.

I was posting only recent videos, and they were in response to the request of some nice sigma footage, and I think they are nice 🙂
Yea maybe a bit much at once, I'll keep that in mind

Interesting breakdown of how the Sigma fp's material behaves in Resolve and Premiere.
1st video: first available-light event documentary that I've seen made with the camera.
2nd video: first corporate video I've seen made with the camera.

I agree we should bring the Sigma Fp thread back on topic.
I'm going to clean it up.

@Lars Steenhoff Hallo Lars, I only look at the one with the kid. I think the grading was not reavealing the strength of 12bit raw. This one looks very good indeed, which youtube suggested by auto. Nice natural colors rich tones and smooth gradations. Even in Rec709 which is still impressive enough to me for awesome delivery.

Sigma also reads this topic for firmware feedback and I think they are doing a great job improving the camera
Lets stop talking about black magic as a company in this sigma topic.

Thanks for starting the new thread.
How about a utility or app that converts Cinema DNG to ProRes in rec 2020 space, which you can then edit and grade in Adobe Premiere? Has this been covered yet?

Hey Andrew I'm actually happy with all the technical talk here, because with the input technical users give to sigma,
It is improving things in the firmware, like the flickering and the exposure preview problem.
Please let us bitch a bit more until those issues are all sorted. 😎
And yes lets make separate tread about resolve DNG no problem with that.

My point is that the very lowest shadows going green/magenta shouldn't really be happening.
If we assume that the sensor is in 12 bit mode and the sensor data that the camera is getting is the same as we see with a 12 bit cDNG then we can assume that these 10bit shadows are a software bug because 12bit cDNG looks perfect. That's really my point. And i think if you have a night scene and you are on the bleeding edge of exposure and can't shoot 24p then you are going to hit this problem just trying to expose normally.
Now if sigma are unable to output 12bit at 25p then the solution that works for everyone is to do 10bit but to use a curve to redistribute values so that the last stop of recorded light does not take 2048 integer values to describe it and then use the saved values to ensure the shadows get every last drop of sensor data they can. Then we'd have 12 bit quality in a 10 bit container at all these frame rates and EVERYONE is happy. There is literally no downside to doing this. This is what 8 bit is doing and that can produce great images in a fraction of the space. The code is already in the camera!
If you see earlier on in this thread i even show what that curve looks like because each DNG file has a copy of it in 8bit so Resolve can debayer properly. It's standard practice in cDNG.
We need a wave of people to say this to sigma because sometimes i think it's only me....
    cheers

Mr. Yamaki replied again and said the engineers are aware of the flickering issue and are actively working toward a fix. They hope to have it included in the summer firmware release

I reached out to Mr. Yamaki on Twitter again and directed him to the previous page of this thread with everything we've found out so far as well as the capture of the flickering happening in Resolve. Fingers crossed

File this under "Just checking it works/Isolation Cabin Fever" but just had a quick go with the UVC output function to see if a makeshift external monitor can be deployed if you need one but aren't carrying one.

The short answer is yes it can.
You'll need an Android device (its doable on iOS but only with a costly adapter last time I checked) and with older devices such as mine you'll need a USB OTG cable which are only a few quid and useful anyway to connect USB drives etc to the phone.
You'll also need a viewer app and there are a myriad of free and paid ones on the Play store so just search for combinations of "uvc" and "usb webcam". I haven't tested enough of them to draw a conclusion so best to use your own judgement based on whatever downloads/review criteria you normally use.
When you have the software installed, its a simple case of connecting the USB-C of the FP to your phone (either directly if your phone is USB-C or via the OTG adapter if not) and the default setting of your FP is to auto-detect what you have connected to the USB-C port so you will see a prompt telling your to switch to Cine mode.
    So, is it useful?
It could have been and might still be if you don't mind the caveats.
The first caveat is that it will only work in Cine mode.
The second one is that you don't have access to any of the menus (not even the QS) when it is in UVC mode and won't be able change anything, although if you have a lens with manual aperture, set the mode to shutter priority and have Auto ISO set you can some minimal non-optimal control.
The third one is that on my phone (which is only USB2 on the OTG port) the performance isn't great or even approaching not that great in terms of lag and frame rate. On better devices this should be less of an issue.
With those sort of caveats, the question is whether its of any use whatsoever and again the answer for me is still a very frustratingly "almost".
The biggest boon is that with a cheap 1/4" 20 mounting mini ball head and phone grip attached to the FP you can have the elusive tilting monitoring solution which I find invaluable without an EVF. It can also be fully articulated to be front facing if required.
Would you use it to actually do meaningful monitoring with ?
Its performance doesn't make that viable on my device at least but for framing when the camera is not at eye level then its perfectly fine and also for focus checking as most of these apps have a finger pinch function to zoom in.
Do I need that all the time ?
No but as my phone is Android anyway, its far more convenient to have a cable and adapter in my bag to press it into service when I do rather than having to carry a real monitor and all the additional power and mounting stuff that goes with it.
The fourth caveat of course is that it takes up the USB port so no external drive and if you are thinking "well if I'm recording on SD thats not an issue" then welcome to caveat number five which is that you can't record internally either !
So you can frame with it but have to unplug it every time you want to record anything.
Oh well at least it passed a bit of time while we are confined to our house !

    Ver.1.02
It has corrected a phenomenon affecting a very small number of individuals whereby DNG files could not be processed during interval timer shooting.
It has corrected a phenomenon whereby video footage appeared distorted when recorded in MOV format and UHD resolution.
It has corrected a phenomenon whereby video footage appeared distorted when Distortion Correction and Vignetting Correction operated incorrectly near infinity focus.
It has corrected a phenomenon whereby a card error occurred when using certain SD cards.
It has corrected the phenomenon whereby, depending on the Exposure Bracket setting, the camera would shoot bracketed exposures even when the function was set to off.
It has corrected a phenomenon whereby the brightness of the monitor changed depending on the subject even when the monitor exposure in M mode was set to "on".
It has corrected a phenomenon whereby the monitor exposure display in M mode was not displayed correctly when using a mount adapter without an electronic contact.
It has corrected a phenomenon affecting a very small number of individuals whereby the power consumption was greater than usual when the power was turned off.”

Well i am hoping that the next small update in a few days is a bug fix.
    I just care about
    - getting a tone curve for 10 bit, as they have done for 8bit, so that 10 bit has the same shadows as 12 bit. And means i can shoot full quality at 25p
    - getting some other crops, like DCI 4K
    - maybe some settings over scaling quality (sharper vs smoother)

I think if all those that agree email and twitter then they can see that the demand is there.

None of the above strikes me as a difficult development job. If the firmware was open i'm sure we could do it.

    cheers
    Paul
