  1. I've owned the A7S since July now, until recently I've had a tough time trying to grade S-LOG 2 footage.

With my new custom LUT, That shouldn't be a problem.

It's based around the default Slog-2/ S-Gamut Profile, the only modification being +23 Saturation.

Since I've invested so much time into this, I've decided to sell it. But only for a small price:

I hope this helps you guys out there.

    Quick Grading Tutorial:

  2. A range of -0.7 to +1.3 is not exactly nailing exposure is it... plus the meter doesn't work correctly in S-LOG mode. Sometimes it fails to even give a reading. Maybe a bug?

I've shot a fair amount of test footage, and ETTR by +1 always seems to give me the best images. I've never had an issue with getting a reading?

( I know it sounds silly, I'm coming from shooting on  5d mk3 and always used the histogram for exposure. I tried that approach with the A7s and everything I shot looked horrible. As soon as switched to ETTR +1, the a7s finally became the camera i wanted it to be.)

  3. I also brought  this camera, problem is everything is in hong kong. Some one please tell me how to get the menus in english....

Figured it out,  Go to the toolbox menu, then go to the fourth page and find a menu with an A icon. Scroll until you find English.

  4. Hi everyone

just about to buy this camera or gh4

but i have a couple of questions maybe you could help me out

1 does it have a intervalometer or do i need to buy one ?

2 i seen this cheap vello canon ef,efs to sony nex adaptor for 49$ at bh photo is it any good ? or should i just get the metabone one ?

last one i find this a bit strange the 3200 iso to get max DR any tips on what kind of filter i will need to put on there

    to shot in daylight ?

    thanks everyone

    Hi,

The Sony A7s has a histogram inbuilt, so you will be able to use that for exposure.

I'm not entirely sure about the the metabones adapter myself, but i found a version called  "Viltrox EF-NEX II"  for £70.00 (I spoke to some one on vimeo using it. Apparently the IS and aperture control works fine, while the autofocus is slow. But that appears to be the same with all adapters)

You will need to buy a variable ND (neutral density) to shoot in daylight.

  5. First of all, thanks for sharing. It seems your "how to" was in demand, though I do not get why some people think grading the a7S's is that much harder...

The luma corrector is unnecessary, you're just performing an operation and undoing part of it with the Fast CC. The luma correction can be done within the Fast Color Corrector, adjusting shadows to 0.3, highlights to 1.0, and the mids to wherever you like in the upper mid section of the waveform.

I know you were not aiming at such a punchy and saturated look -it was just for demonstration purposes, right?-, but the effect of the applied LUT is too "light" in my opinion. If you'd like to get that kind of look punchy from the start and tone it down to your taste I have found that the standard Alexa LUT from Speedgrade/Lumetri will give you that (at least until we have more a7S specific LUTs).

I agree with you that slight color casts (or "color interpretations" from the camera) are not a problem, especially with cameras in which you can dial the preferred color cast in camera. True, Canon got it right with factory defaults, but with the A7S you have the possibility of modifying it and even tweaking it further in post so, I don't really see a problem that cannot be solved by using the camera. Over time you'll get to a point were you have it profiled for every occassion to your liking.

    Hi there,

I understand that I can achieve the same result just using fast cc (adjusting the whites/blacks etc), I just preferred doing it in 2 steps with slog (luma step for the major, fast cc for the minor tweaks) I actually found I got a better image that way, but I think it might of just been a placebo effect.

This was more for the crowd that was just sticking a LUT on it and calling it a day. If you understand the concept behind this, then you can grade anything to your specific preference/look.

What's most important to me, is that I can nearly get the quality of 5d mk3 raw with out the all of the converting. The a7s really does seem to have the dynamic range its marketed to have.

  6. Nice tutorial.  What have you been doing regarding the yellowish skin tones?

    Michael

So skin colour, lives in the midtones. Open up the three way colour corrector, then compensate for what ever colour cast you have using the midtone wheel.

  7.

So I know some people are having problems grading the s-log 2 coming out the of a7s. I managed to find a decent way, to grade it in Premiere Pro CC, so i thought I'd share it with you.

  8. As mentioned before it was shot at 1920 x 544 for 20+ seconds bursts on a komputerbay 1000x 64gb card.

It was then stretched to 1920 x 878 in davinci rendered at 50fps. Then stuck on a 1080 timeline interporlated at 25fps.

    The lenses used were:

    Canon 50mm 1.2
    Canon 16-35mm 2.8
    Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS
    Canon 24-105mm 4 IS

  9. For a €1700 budget

I would get a 550d/ti2 (or what ever the cheapest entry level camera is) no stock lens, since it's rubbish.

Tamron 24-70m 2.8 VC (38.4m-112m) for 1.6 crop. This lens is handy if your planning to upgrade to fullframe.

    Or Tamron 17-50m VC ( 27.2m - 80m) for 1.6 crop.

    Canon 50m 1.8 (85m) for 1.6 crop

Most obvious choice in the world, Just please don't constantly use this at 1.8, as nothing will be in focus unless it's a very locked off shot.

You will need Image stabilization on your lens if your going to do any shoulder mount stuff (which I can guarantee you will).

I can't count the number of times I've used expensive rigs and still gone back to this shoulder mount.

It's made out of heavy duty plastic, it just works. Yes it will fall apart eventually, but at £20 it doesn't matter.
